  • This SketchUp quick tip will teach you to adjust your field of view, allowing you to see more with your camera!

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In today’s SketchUp quick tutorial, we’re going to talk about changing your camera’s field of view so that you can see more with a given camera angle.
This is something you’re going to use a lot more in interior models, because it’s important that you see more from a given angle.
Sometimes, for example, you’ll move your camera into a space (especially small spaces) and you will only see a very narrow slice of that space.
What you can do is change the camera’s field of view so that you can see more with your camera.
To do this, you’re going to use the zoom tool. You can find this at the top of the page in your basic toolset. If you select this tool, you may notice that down in the status bar below, it mentions that shift changes the field of view. What this means is if you hold the shift key and click and drag, this will adjust your field of view up or down.
If you adjust your field of view up, your camera angle will go wider, allowing you to see more stuff.
However, you have to be careful, because if you go too wide, you’ll start to get distortions, almost like a fish-eye lens.
In addition to being able to click and drag, you can also type in a number to adjust your field of view. For example, if I wanted my field of view to be 70 degrees, I’d type in 70 and hit the enter key.
One other thing to note - you can store your field of view in a scene. So for example, if I create a scene with a camera view with a FOV of 35, and create another with an FOV of 70, SketchUp will transition between those two FOV’s, allowing a smooth transition between interior and exterior views.
That’s where I’m going to end today’s show. Leave a comment below, let me know what you thought!

How can I get the setting that whatever I see on the screen exactly same scene appears on render? My 3D model space went behind default tray and I am unable to figure it out how to get that setting which I jist mentioned above.

Hi Justrin. I am Drasti from India. I change my field of view neither by shift and scroll nor by manually type. I was able to type manually before but lately i am not been able to. would be a great help if you can help me sort the matter.

On (at least) Mac if you use Field of View through Camera -> Field of View SketchUp apparently ignores the boundaries of walls if you change the Field of View too much. Effectively pushing you through the wall to the outside of the room. Very annoying.
Does not happen with changing FoV through Zoom. Thanks for this!

Good tip, the things you should notice if you actually look.
What a shame Sketchup doesn't have an mm focal length, which is more of what most video animation packages use.
