Thanks for the review, i bought a DP-UB450 for my Lg C1 and it has a very solid picture quality, i dont' need all that hdr tweaks from a player and i don't like disturbing displays or Apps i already have on my C1, yes the DP-UB450 has a cheap looking but it is much smaller and thin, almost invisible. Who cares when the picture quality is so high. I did not choose it for the price, i have no problems in buying the more expensive 820 but i dont pay for things i do not need. I was impressed with HDR Blu-Rays and the Full-Hd Blu-Ray upscaling is exceptional. I liked your review because in this comparison you documented the differences. Well done !
Thanks very much for this extremely detailed & thorough review of both players...I'm gonna go with the 820 mainly due to the physical attributes...I like your style of presentation!
Have the ub450 and have always been happy. If you dont need the bells and whistles the ub450 is all you need for a budget player 4k. Picture quality wise and sound wise the ub450 is excellent.
@@RichyRich2607The 450 plays Dolby Atmos - actually, it doesn’t depend on the player itself but the AV unit you use. The player sends bitstream and the AV amp decodes it (or not) into Dolby Atmos, DTS HD or other formats.
Got me the DP-UB820 a couple of months back. Like it a lot. Apart from great looking HDR pictures the upscaling is really phenomenal giving new life to my DVD collection.
@@alyx4436 I am still very pleased with my player. It has served me well. The only shortcoming is it's limited file support when used as a media player. But disc wise it's good. The HDR optimiser setting it shares with the top model DP-UB9000 is really good. You get the best tone mapping for your specific output device type.
Yeah but it can't remember where it left off on DVD's which is unacceptable. Also you can't change aspect ratio. How can't it get those two basics right?
@@Revolver1981 I haven't noticed any aspect ratio s being off. The only aspect rations needed with DVD-video should be 4:3 or 16:9 as far as I know. I am using a LG OLED and do my upscaling on the Panasonic player.
@@bitnisse7186 I have a couple of 4:3 ratio discs and this Panasonic can't change the aspect ratio to make it full screen. We have to put up with black bars on the left and right sides of the screen. That's an absolute disgrace. That's why I sent mine back for a refund. Also the irritating buffering circle on screen every time you load a disc and it makes a weird loud noise when loading a disc as well. It's unacceptable for a powerful player like this.
Great comparison. Wish I saw this a week before. I agonised between the two this Black Friday. However I probably still would have chosen the UB820 due to the annoying red light on the front of the UB450.
Yeah the red light should be the standby light and it should turn green or blue when turned on. I also don't understand the annoying loud noises Panasonic players make when loading a disc.
Great review! Quick question, does the UB820 display a the time at front the when on standby? I've noticed that 4K Blu-Ray players don't seem to have that feature for some reason which is a shame as it is convenient for the living room. This will be the deciding factor between the UB450 and the UB820 because if the UB820 doesn't display the time when on standby it is not worth me spending the extra money when the UB450 otherwise meets my requirements. Thanks
Hey Gurdit - unfortunately, UB820 does not have this function. It is really strange as it is a simple function and a very convenient one, but I doubt this will be added in future firmware updates.
@@TVguyDarko That's such a shame. I don't see why they don't have that feature anymore. Seems like the UB450 is the choice for me then. Thanks for the reply :)
I am realy happy with your time measuring of loading disks. Nice to see how the menu works. I will buy the Panasonic DP-UB824 (the better one, other than the one you tested)
Thank you for the comparison. Is the upscaling of standard Blu-Ray the same in terms of quality? Also, with the UB450 coming with a tiny remote control, do you know if a replacement UB820 remote control will work with the UB450? Many thanks
Hello - thank you for watching! Upscaling quality is the same if you do not want to further tweak the image - in that case UB820 has an advantage. I personally never use those extra options as I prefer “pure direct” approach and anyway TVs have plenty of controls if I want to do something. Related to the remote, I think it should work.
Great review as always. I just bought the 450 on zoom for 180 with 5 free UHD films (Blackkklansman, Skyscraper, Blade Runner 2049, Pacific Rim: Uprising and The Equaliser) I already have Blade Runner but still think that's a pretty good deal.
I bought the ub820 on black Friday. Surprised to find it had the latest firmware out of box. It performs exceptionally. But i don't like how if "vieralink" (cec) is enabled, it forces itself to be the main input when everything is turned on. I only have time to enjoy discs on the weekends. So the rest of the week, I'm forced to switch inputs upon powering up, or disabling CEC on the UB820, which forces me to use the UB820 remote, and do the remote juggling.
Hi... nice review ! Btw, i wanna ask about the audio out port, its only mention FRONT, SURROUND, SURROUND BACK, and CENTRE, how do we arrange left and right channel ?
Hello, Great review! By the way, can you please confirm whether the HCX processor in the 820 machine is *only* there for the Picture Optimizer function? (ie. if you're relying on your OLED TV to do your picture tweaking, then the player's HCX hardware is bypassed?
Can’t find any other videos comparing these players, but I’ve heard the upscaling for the 450 is worse than the 820’s? Is there any chance you could show us how DVDs and regular Blu Rays look when upscaled on both of these?
Very nice review!👍 I'm using the UB-450 only as secondary setup and it works just fine. One thing that does annoy me to no end is that I can't control the UB-450 player with my TV remote from Philips. Even when the CEC is enabled and EasyLink on the Phillips TV. Did you encounter the same problem, when testing these units? Current setups are: Living - Video: Sony 55XG9505, Audio: Sonos Beam Gen 2, Sub Gen 3, Player: Sony X800M2, Streambox: Apple TV Mancave - Video: Philips 43PUS8546, Audio: Sonos Beam Gen 2, Player: Panasonic UB450, Streambox: Apple TV
Thanks for this review. Given that current TVs are so good and the level of picture adjustments are significant, it would seem spending more on the 820 would be pointless.
Nice review. The HDR to SDR down-conversion on the 820 is class leading in my humble opinion. Ok it’s not built (and doesn’t look as pretty) like the 9000 or even the 900. But it’s better performing than the 900 and IMO just as good as the 9000 when it comes to ‘video’. It’s absurdly good value for money for everything video. And an extremely important player if super sampling is still/also important to you.
With optical connection you can connect the 820 with a stereo amp.Does it play DVD +R DL?In my country there is Panasonic Blu-Ray Player DP-UB824EGK.Which is more new 820 or 824 i think.
Yes, I also think it is better - especially if your TV supports Dolby Vision (Sony needs to be manually switched to Dolby Vision mode while Pany does that automatically).
@@TVguyDarko yes I just bought a 75 inch Samsung qled q60 so I think it should be good also just bought a nakamichi 7.2.4 sound bar ready for the shut down 🙂
Hey Ron - thanks for watching! I've bought it from an eBay seller located in the UK. Actually that is the second I've bought since the first one had issue playing the discs so I returned it.
I got my UB450 a couple of days ago from John Lewis online store in the UK for £179, and get a longer guarantee as a result. I’m happy with it overall. It is cheap, light and nasty feeling, but it works well and plays all HDR formats; HLG, HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. I have a Samsung QN90A so no Dolby Vision for me, but I have a couple of HDR10+ discs including American Gangster, which is also full screen (no black bars) and looks amazing. Unlike most reviews including this one, my UB450 red LED is only on when it is switched on. When it is switched off, the red LED goes out.
Thanks for sharing your experience! UB450 still remains a great all-in-one disc player - I see Panasonic also has DP-UB150EG-K - which currently goes for 161 euro in Croatia and offers HCX picture processor but no Dolby Vision.

Thanks for the helpful video! I'm trying to decide between this and the Sony UPB-X700 and was hoping someone might be able to answer a few questions: - Does this player support DTS:X? And does it automatically choose between this / Dolby Atmos depending on the disc (and same question for Dolby Vision / HDR10)? - If yes, then if I connect via HDMI to a soundbar (LG SL10YG) which connects to the TV (LG C9) will those still be automatically selected? - Preference between the two players? Apologies for the picky questions, just don't want to regret my purchase!
Hi Giles! Thanks for watching! Panasonic UHD BD players do support DTS:X and they will automatically switch to Dolby Vision based on content metadata. SL10YG seems to be able to pass through Dolby Vision content, but at max 24 Hz which is perfectly fine for movies - www.reddit.com/r/Soundbars/comments/evtstm/lg_sl10yg_dolby_vision_passthrough/ I own DP-UB820 and except for archaic menus, I like it very much.
I just switched from the UBP-X700 to a region-free modded UB820 (the UB450 isn't available here in the U.S.), and I totally agree. All Sony 4K players with Dolby Vision require manually turning it on & off in the settings to avoid unwanted DV processing on non-DV discs; nearly all other 4K players with DV will activate it only as needed so long as DV is on in the settings. (Same for HDR10+; AFAIK Pannys from the UB450 up are the *only* players that support both DV & HDR10+. Panasonic even claims to support HLG on discs though I thought that was strictly for broadcasting, cable, etc.; I don't know of any discs with HLG.) And *any* Blu-ray player (regular or 4K) that can bitstream DTS-HD Master Audio (the vast majority of them) can also bitstream DTS:X, which is just DTS-HD MA with metadata. (Same for Atmos on discs which is just TrueHD with metadata.)
Great review 👍 Small/big technical question: I have a tv samsung qe75q90r that is not dolby vision, only hdr10. If I buy a 4k dolby vision bluray player that decodes these metadovers, would I have the equivalent of dolby vision on my TV? In a way it would be the reader who will send the contrasting image dynamically to the TV that will only display it. Thank you
Hi I purchased 450 recently after seeing this great video, as he says both have same picture quality. I have a Atmos Soundbar. So do I connect HDMI cable to my OLED TV to the soundbar and then another connect HDMI cable from the Soundbar to 'audio out' hdmi socket on the 450 player, for better sound.

Hey Phillip - you can try both options and see which will give you better image quality. I think there will not be any difference if DV signal comes to the TV and TV does conversion to HDR10 or if the player does it.
Hi ! Thanks for your review. I have bought 4 weeks ago a Panasonic 55GZ1000 and the UB450. But the 2 Ultra HD Blu-Ray discs I have bought with Dolby Vision (Gladiator and Westworld season 2) are very dark. (Those in « simple » HDR (Arthur, Men in Black) are good). Is there anything I can do with the 450 ? You show a brightness menu at 4:57 that I can’t find on m’y 450. But you also say that the 820 have special settings for dark screens ? Thanks for your help :-) !
Hey Alan! First of all, thank you for your comment and mentioning that Gladiator is available in Dolby Vision - I've just purchased myself a copy :). I expect to receive GZ950 probably the end of next month so I will check out picture controls and so on. Have you tried different picture presets while TV is in Dolby Vision mode? UB820 BD player has HDR Optimizer function that makes image brighter in HDR and you can tweak it more than UB450, but if you find HDR10 content OK and DV not OK, then probably something is not correct with picture settings. BTW - how is deep color output set on your player - is it on Auto (12bit priority)?
@@TVguyDarko Hi, Thanks for your answer. Yes I've tried the 3 preset of Dolby Vision, and I have personalised ont to have more lights, but not enough. Yes it is in auto 12 bit, is it good ?
Sneeky4kGaming , I’m not Darko but regular Blu-ray has 8 bit. UHD Blu-ray can be 10 bit. However those can be in SDR or HDR. I would turn off Deep Colour for regular discs and for 4K Ultra HD in SDR or HDR set it to auto.

I’ve returned it for the CX but I’m still waiting for it to arrive. I don’t do any gaming, just watch movies streamed via Netflix and 4K movies I’ve downloaded.
Are you absolutely sure that it is not just upscaling everything to 4K, as opposed to being native (recently borrowed word!) and is not in fact playing without adjustments made to videos, at 2k? You see, it is only the title (not specifications) showing on Amazon that states the term 4K UHD (with that specific wording), whereas on all other retail sites the wording reads as '4K/HD'.

Hey - if would allow you to have more control in regards to HDR - highlight details preservation, fine-tuning luminance, colors and so on. If you are not happy with controls you currently have on the player and on the TV and if you find HDR picture too dark for example, then it would be a worthy upgrade.

I am a bit late in the game, but thanks for the review.. seems the UB450 is the way to go for the Ultra BR disks for the price and resulting picture at that price. Wanted to get HDR+ and Dolby Vision support and both players will do that..

Sorry to jump on, I have a Sony oled and the HDR Optimisor has definitely made 4k blu rays look better, even on a top end TV like ours. The player's upscaling on standard blu rays is also improved. My previous player was a UB900, which was a really, really good player anyway. Bottom line is, this will make your physical media look a little bit better. Great bit of kit..
Thanks very much for the reply. I also started looking at ub420 which seems to have everything however only one website sells it and not sure they are legit. Still undecided at the moment lol but leaning more to the 820.
Thank you for the comparison! One question as I'm new to standalone players. By connecting both the player and a PC via LAN cable would I be able to create a network between the 2 of them which would allow me to access from the player all the PC shared folders? The reason I'm asking is because I'm considering the UB450, but copying content from PC to flash drive and then inserting it in the player isn't an option given that UB450 only has USB2.0 port (major drawback in my opinion) and is unable to play high bitrate 4K content. So if I can't play content from PC via LAN cable, UB450 is not an option for me.
I managed to get hold of someone which owns the UB450 who has confirmed that you can play files via LAN from your PC. However, the player doesn't know how to use any external subtitles...
@@BizkitBoy86 Hi - yes, that's an issue with players in general. But the solution here is to merge video file with subtitles in the MKV container. You can do that with MKVToolNix.
@@TVguyDarko Indeed, that is one solution but unfortunately it's not viable in every scenario. For example, MKVToolNix is unable to keep Dolby Vision metadata intact when muxing to MKV. The only container known so far to be able to do that is MP4 and - wouldn't you know it - it doesn't allow muxing in any subs. This is actually the main reason I'm considering this player... to be able to play files with Dolby Vision layer on my GZ2000 because I have this amazing TV and I'm not using it to its full potential.
Its a $300 difference where I live so I go with the cheaper option if there is no difference in picture quality. And to be honest both remotes look pretty crappy and cheaply made.
If you're looking at the more budget end of the scale I'd suggest the Panasonic DP-UB420. 420, not the 450 we see here. It has many more of the same features of the 820, you can get almost the same level of picture settings control, including the HDR shortcut button and a Netflix shortcut button, as well as the same internet/streaming services and possibly even the same image processor. The only main thing it doesn't have is Dolby Vision support.
Well, one problem is that 420 is starting to be non existent anywhere. Next to impossible to buy. On the other hand, I could now buy 450 on 169€, it's in discount just now.
@@raikkusaatana Well, that's a shame - I don't know where you are but here in Aus it's still readily available, even in retail stores, for about the same price too.
@@TVguyDarko Thanks for the reply. It all looks like the DP-UB450 makes sense. My only hesitation is I am also looking at purchasing a decent (~$500) sound system for our TV and media box (currently using builtin and $40 3.5mm computer speakers). Would the Panasonic DP-UB450 limit my audio options? Running the audio through the HDMI out --> TV --> sound system....would this reduce quality a lot and not maximise the Bluray and sound system audio? Thanks for any advice.
If these ones are regionfree do you change The region with The controller? Or does it change by it self does anyone know? Im from sweden and have alot of reg 1 on dvd and reg a on blu ray i cant play yet.
By the Remote, but if its says Region Band you want Region Free it will play everything inc old dvds, try tps or multiregionmagic or 220electronics, the last one is in America and if you have questions you can email them, very efficient, the other 2 are UK Based, unless you fancy a Reavon from France .
Agree - I never use them. If only there were custom buttons except dedicated ones for Netflix and Internet apps - this way when you accidentally press them it is just frustrating.
If UB420 works well for you, no need to change it. UB450 supports Dolby Vision, but if you have a Samsung TV that doesn't support DV, then no point in getting it.
You will never need higher than 100Mbps networking. Native 4k UHD discs are typically 100Mbps bitrate, so anything you stream will guaranteed be below this.
I bought the DP-UB424 model from Amazon Germany- and it has the HCX Chip (and HDR Optimizer). Cheaper than the 820 model- only thing it's missing is Dolby Vision.

Glad it was helpful!
Awesome deal!
Thanks for the Review! I just bought a 820 and I’m super happy with it. What about the longevity of this player? Yours is still running after 4years?
Very concise and thorough review. A lot of good information.
Thanks!
Zdravo Darko!
Interesuje me da li ub450 prepoznaje titl sa filma na usb?
Ne bih da kupim blu ray a da ne čita titlove sa rezanih filmova ili fleške.
Can’t find any other videos comparing these players, but I’ve heard the upscaling for the 450 is worse than the 820’s? Is there any chance you could show us how DVDs and regular Blu Rays look when upscaled on both of these?
Same I want to see it
There is no visual difference and if you have a Sony TV, use that upscaler, it blows away the Panasonic!
Very nice review!👍
I'm using the UB-450 only as secondary setup and it works just fine. One thing that does annoy me to no end is that I can't control the UB-450 player with my TV remote from Philips. Even when the CEC is enabled and EasyLink on the Phillips TV.
Did you encounter the same problem, when testing these units?
Current setups are:
Living - Video: Sony 55XG9505, Audio: Sonos Beam Gen 2, Sub Gen 3, Player: Sony X800M2, Streambox: Apple TV
Mancave - Video: Philips 43PUS8546, Audio: Sonos Beam Gen 2, Player: Panasonic UB450, Streambox: Apple TV
That must be something to do with Phillips. My Samsung TV remote controls the UB450 very well.
@@Revolver1981 thanks for letting me know! 👌
Thank you for review.
Thanks for this review. Given that current TVs are so good and the level of picture adjustments are significant, it would seem spending more on the 820 would be pointless.
Glad it was helpful!
Agree and thanks for the comment, especially for HDR to SDR conversion that I see more and more people asking about.
Sony players have a better picture!
With optical connection you can connect the 820 with a stereo amp.Does it play DVD +R DL?In my country there is Panasonic Blu-Ray Player DP-UB824EGK.Which is more new 820 or 824 i think.
Thanks for the video I now know ub-420 is the player for me almost went with a sony x800 but after digging I think this one is better
Yes, I also think it is better - especially if your TV supports Dolby Vision (Sony needs to be manually switched to Dolby Vision mode while Pany does that automatically).

Hi great comparison where did you purchase your ub820 from please
@@TVguyDarko does the UB450 have the HCX processor? I thought that was only on the higher end models.

Sweet deal!
Thanks for the helpful video! I'm trying to decide between this and the Sony UPB-X700 and was hoping someone might be able to answer a few questions:
- Does this player support DTS:X? And does it automatically choose between this / Dolby Atmos depending on the disc (and same question for Dolby Vision / HDR10)?
- If yes, then if I connect via HDMI to a soundbar (LG SL10YG) which connects to the TV (LG C9) will those still be automatically selected?
- Preference between the two players?
Apologies for the picky questions, just don't want to regret my purchase!
Hi Giles! Thanks for watching!
Panasonic UHD BD players do support DTS:X and they will automatically switch to Dolby Vision based on content metadata. SL10YG seems to be able to pass through Dolby Vision content, but at max 24 Hz which is perfectly fine for movies - www.reddit.com/r/Soundbars/comments/evtstm/lg_sl10yg_dolby_vision_passthrough/
I own DP-UB820 and except for archaic menus, I like it very much.
Great review 👍
Small/big technical question:
I have a tv samsung qe75q90r that is not dolby vision, only hdr10.
If I buy a 4k dolby vision bluray player that decodes these metadovers, would I have the equivalent of dolby vision on my TV?
In a way it would be the reader who will send the contrasting image dynamically to the TV that will only display it.
Thank you
For a Dolby Vision experience, the player as well as the TV must support Dolby Vision format.
Hi Amitav - yes, you can do it like that - one HDMI cable to the TV and the other to the soundbar.
what type of AC plug come's with it i live in Canada and are oulets are not the same over in the UK. does it come with a north america plug or do i need to buy a AC Plug Converter. also does this player let you turn on subtitles
Buy the unit in USA/Canada store or website and you will get a proper plug. all BR players will support subtitles.
Hi! Does the UB450 or 820 support the exFAT file system for USBs?
Recently purchased this unit going to pair it with a Samsung QN900B which does not support dolby vision, should i turn off dolby vision on the 4k bluray player or leave it on. Any help would be great ? Thanks.. Phil
TV Calibration with Darko should I keep deep colour off if using SDR content? blue rays and Netflix etc? And keep it on Auto for HDR DVDs?
@@TVguyDarko Hi,
Thanks for your answer.

Will this make my LG OLED appear brighter in dark scenes? Would the Netflix app on the player be better than the native Netflix app on the TV?
Which LG OLED do you own? New LG OLED TVs have many settings to control how bright the image is, so you can get quite good result with native apps.
@@TVguyDarko hey thanks for the reply. I did own the BX but it was terrible during dark scenes, I did play around with settings but it didn’t help. Is the 450 a Bluray 4K UHD player because on no advertising is that title used - it states in specifications '4K/HD' which could mean 4k-upscaling?
Yes, it is a 4K UHD BD player as I was playing UHD BD discs on it. amzn.to/3y9Uz81
I have an LG OLED55B9S and I'm looking for a good player for 200€ or less (a little more is possible but not too much).
I have seen Sony X700 but the fact that DV activation is not automatic is a no for me.
I was going for the LG UBK90 but I've read some issues.
Is the Panasonic UB450 better than those? Is there another better choice?
I'm going to use it only for discs, I have every streaming service built-in my TV, and Plex is also there, so I really don't need all the USB, photo etc. things, it's just to watch my blu-ray. (At first I thought i'd use the PS5 but it seems it won't have Dolby Vision for 4K Blu-Rays...)

Would the Panasonic DP-UB450 limit my audio options? Running the audio through the HDMI out --> TV --> sound system....would this reduce quality a lot and not maximise the Bluray and sound system audio?

If UB420 works well for you, no need to change it. UB450 supports Dolby Vision, but if you have a Samsung TV that doesn't support DV, then no point in getting it.
Guys, does the player has 1Gb LAN? or just 100Mb..thanks
100Base-TX (100 Mbit) only.
@@TVguyDarko thanks
You will never need higher than 100Mbps networking. Native 4k UHD discs are typically 100Mbps bitrate, so anything you stream will guaranteed be below this.
so the PQ is the same ?
Yes - UB820 has more options to adjust it, but in general default options are enough.
820 alsow got better dac @ 32bit so better for home cinema
Hello ! Made in China ?
HD DVD VARDIA RD-1A ???😊
820 for me!
Nice..
Omg the adds
I know, they are everywhere these days...
You completely glossed over the £150 elephant in the room, the HCX Chip.
No, I haven’t - in my direct comparison I couldn’t see any difference, at least not on bluray and uhd bluray content.
I bought the DP-UB424 model from Amazon Germany- and it has the HCX Chip (and HDR Optimizer). Cheaper than the 820 model- only thing it's missing is Dolby Vision.
My Panasonic ub 9000 is quieter than both of those reviewed
Expected considering it is Panasonic's top model. Hope it serves you well!

What is “crap”?
I have contacted Panasonic and indeed the literature they sent me verifies that the player is a 2K player and which can 'upscale' to 4K.
This is not a 4K UHD player.
That doesn’t make sense since it can read 4K discs. Either it can read 4K discs or it can’t.
Testing a disc tray? That's sad. Very, very sad indeed.
Agree 100.
Lol. It's a part of build quality tho.
