I edited this trailer back in 1997 in NYC, and am amazed to see over 200K views.
Milestone's only demand (they were the U.S. distributor) was that there could be no Japanese dialog - only action, and beautiful, largely silent, moments.
I used Joe Hisaishi's amazing soundtrack for the trailer. It starts with "Painters" (track 6), and then crossfades to "HANA-BI" (track 11) at the :40 mark.

@@kDEa2606 Citing the fact that Takeshi Kitano won a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival is a poor measurement of his global recognition. Most people, myself included, wouldn't be able to tell you who won at Venice last year, never mind more than a quarter century ago. Venice is an elite film festival, as opposed to the Oscars, which is something very different. I'm certain that many directors who are largely unknown in the world have won at Venice. Take a look at the list of Golden Lion winners. Very few have truly global recognition to regular filmgoers.
Yes, Takeshi is huge in Japan, I've visited the country several times, everyone knows of him. Outside Japan, it's a different story. Walk down the street, even go to a cinema, and throw his name around. Most filmgoers outside of Japan are oblivious to his existence. There are non-Japanese people who are very much into Japanese pop culture, claim to be "experts" about Japan, yet wouldn't recognise him. The number of film buffs with whom I've spoken who still haven't seen HANA-BI is baffling.
So, yes, Takeshi Kitano is very much overlooked outside Japan. The film HANA-BI deserves to be one of the most popular films in existence. Yet due to the fact that many people, especially those in the Anglosphere, have an allergic reaction to reading subtitles, we must endure the rantings of people who think that all the best movies are made in Hollywood.

Please read the description. The fellow who made the trailer said that he wasn't allowed to have any dialogue in the trailer. Therefore, we cannot know about Nishi's wife and her ordeal. When cannot hear the doctor speaking to Nishi. What did you want the maker of the trailer to do, throw in a few more shots of Nishi and Miyuki sitting at the beach? This trailer finds exactly the right balance. I don't find it misleading in the slightest.

Kitano often says his performances, movies too, are all plays, that is not serious at all, but movie is convenient when the harvests are arranged from every field. He has recently started the work of news commentator at live, and college professor, morepver he's been comedian, TV personality, politc commentator, actor, painter, poet, novelist, and love Mathematics. But his movie works are special, filled with elements usually we cannot see, all arranged and destloyed.

I love this film. I feel western cinema has rejected the real not "Spiritual" issues but the "Things we cant really touch" eg the sacrifical roles that are presented in this film. Even western films which do present this point fail to have people like Kitano behind them, for example Kitano is a megastar in Japan, myself speaking as citizen of the United Kingdom, has no one of his standing to us as an example. And no one even near his level would attempt such risks with this kind of film.
