I’ve been Plant based SOS for the last twelve years. I can’t thank you enough for finally making my life easier, I can finally get out of the kitchen and have a life but still maintain my diet.
I saw my MD yesterday... He said, "Other than the meds we've been prescribing, you're an anomoly. Most people in your situation are long gone." I smiled and replied "Being an SOS Vegan is the answer." He didn't understand and didn't seem interested (which IS THE PROBLEM!) I'm 66 now. I had a quintuple (5) heart bypass at 38. My Dad died at 40, Mom at 50, and my Grandpa at 52. I'm the last, and now the LONGEST-living male on my Paternal side. Why Doesn't the Medical Field understand this!!!? Oh HECK, I forgot! This recipe for Charro Beans and Pico reminds me of my young years in Imperial Valley, California (minus all the meat and crap). These are SO DELICIOUS and way healthier! Dillion and Reebs, thank you SO MUCH. Keep up the great work - you are appreciated! :) XOXO!
Been vegetarian for about 20 years and just recently went vegan about 9 months ago. This channel is the best!! Thanks Dillon and Reebs for totally inspiring me!
I went plant based a year ago and you and your products are saving me I still have a long way to go but so far I have lost over a hundred pounds with the help of your yummy product Thank You so much!!!
“Your lunch is ready when it makes a noise” 😂 I found your channel today and am enjoying your videos. I’m working towards going more plant based and it’s so intimidating but you and Reebs are helping alleviate some nerves.
If you don't have a pressure cooker/instapot, it's easy to soak the beans for 12-24 hours, changing the water 2-3 times (reduces gas). Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to just simmer them. Normally this takes 2 hours for 2c dried beans, but if you add 1 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp baking soda, it reduces cooking time by about half (it's a little foamy at first) and it reduces gas. Use some now and freeze the rest in mason jars. Also, mashing the beans is great for some dishes, and you wind up eating more beans that way.
I find that salt (as well as anything acidic) prevents beans from softening well. I think it's vital to soak beans before cooking (vegetarian since '72, vegan not long thereafter), even when using a pressure cooker...overnite in cold water on counter. They can be soaked, then rinsed, then frozen in cooking size batches. Then they're ready to cook. I do this with chick peas (for making falafel/you don't cook them in advance) and for kidneys when making Minestrone soup (in the IP). That soup cooks in zero or one minute, then release pressure. You can even add the pasta to the pot, but we prefer the pasta cooked otherwise. So delicious & lasts 2 ppl several meals, esp if you add cornbread (make waffles from your batter/freeze them) or leftover biscuits, etc. I use a lot of kidney beans in it (cook in the IP one hour after soaking, & cook till it makes a thick gravy; makes the soup so much better). Thx Dillon. Your beans & pico look awesome. Love how you & Reebs interact. ❤️
No, I don't dry the beans. The more you eat beans, the less they will bother you, concerning "gas". It's a fact of the human condition & some of our food combinations, too. But it doesn't have to be a problem.
When ready to use the frozen beans, you can thaw them at room temp (if home is warm, be cautious not to let them sit too long & sour) or in frig (less time), but I generally will just pour boiling water over them, let sit a few mins, then drain: ready to use.
Hallo Dillon and Reebs! We have a similar traditional bean recipe in Greece which uses the same ingredients plus carrots and red pepper flakes instead of jalapeno peppers (because we cannot find them here). I'm always fascinated by the fact that different cultures have been making almost identical healthy and delicious recipes for centuries. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe with us!
OMG! I tried this recipe last weekend. It's amazing!!! The quantity in makes is awesome too. We were eating beans all week. Thank you for sharing this. This recipe will be on repeat every week or two.
OMG you are my spirit animal!!! I went vegan in 2018 and thinking first what tastes did I like helped to zero in on what I wanted to eat. Fast forward to today and I use my instant pot (for about the past 4 years) to prep my dry beans (6 C water, salt, Mex chili powder or hot chili powder and chili powder - yes, 2 kinds) so I can use them in whatever recipe I choose. The only beans I don't quick soak are my black beans but since I love this taste, all beans get prepped the same and portioned onto containers to deep freeze. Never cooked a complete meal before (in the Instant pot) so I will be doing yours in the next couple of hours after work. It looks devine!! Thanks for sharing. (Just looked at your shirts and thought of another - "Did I Pico your interest?" or something like that 😉)
Love it... My favorite breakfast is a "haystack" which is basically a "taco salad" you start with the chips and each ingredient is stacked on top of each other... Add your beans, lettuce, onion, tomato and avocado and whatever else you might think that would be good, then put on some green taco sauce.. Boom!!! go enjoy. This breakfast fills you up and keeps you full for a good while..
You made chili. That's what this is. I make this all the time and mix up ingredients thinking I'm creating something unique. I always say to myself later, "this is just chili." Love the videos. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for keeping it simple and showing ways of not starving. It is the real deal because I noticed how slim Scott is. I am going to try these recipes. I even like the Mason jar preps. 👍
I love how you keep it simple AND delicious 😋. I do recommend folks soak their beans if they can remember to - I've tried both ways and my gut has a much easier go of it with the presoaked method. Not required, just suggested. Love to the whole fam 💕!
Yep, i would SOAK the pintos also...do you cut the liquids going into this also if you soak the beans? No way can I do the 2 pounds of beans for me....I live alone. Thanks for any tips!
This is awesome! I started my whole foods plant-based journey on July 1, 2023 and haven’t looked back. These kinds of recipes keep me loving the plant-based lifestyle, so easy and flavorful.
I've been making this for a few decades or so and sometimes I"ll add a little corn or sometimes mushrooms for a "meaty" texture, sometimes some potatoes, the sky's the limit. I do use the saute feature though and simply turn it one while I'm getting my ingredients out and then as I chop the onions, they go in, the peppers, etc. and when I'm done chopping they're partially sautéed and if I want I can continue for a few minutes or just add everything else. Also, for those whose tummy's don't like unsoaked beans, put them on the stove, boil for a minute or two, let them sit for about an hour, rinse and voila, your tummy will be happy. Thanks for the video!
Sometimes at the end of the day I feel sick of beans and lentils because I am full. The next day when hunger builds again, I find them appealing again. This is how it is supposed to works. Unlike when I ate processed food and never felt full for more than 10 minutes.
I have to add that this made a huge amount. I froze a bunch of one cup containers of these, and they have come in handy so many times when I didn't feel up to cooking. We just got back from an overseas trip and were terribly jet lagged. My husband was amazed at the different delicious meals I put together for us so quickly using these beans as a base.
The grocery stores near me sell frozen organic peppers and onions. It was on sale this week 2 for $4. My friend and I talked and both of us tend to end up buying fresh vegetables and then come home exhausted, late from work and we end up having our produce go bad. Both of us buy frozen pre-prepped veggies because of that. It really helps. And, nutritionally, they can have more nutrients than fresh veggies (unless the fresh veggies were just picked)
@@wishingb5859 I started doing that a few years ago too because I'd found that I was wasting a lot of money because I was not consuming my fresh produce fast enough. It would spoil. So now I purchase quite a bit of my veggies, and even some fruit (e.g. wild blueberries, pineapples, mangos, etc) frozen. People really underestimate frozen produce by thinking it's inferior, but it's not. Also, the bonus is that frozen produce is less expensive than fresh produce. 😊

Looking forward to making this. What do Americans mean by a can of tomato sauce? Is that simply tomato puree or passata? In Australia tomato sauce is what you put on your cooked meal ie Heinz Ketchup.
Definitely reminiscent of the old days! That batch of pico is a joke compared to the monster batches you use to make! lol Thanks for the video Dillon & Reebs! 💕
Love your videos. I’ve been binge watching ha ha. Would you ever serve this over rice or potatoes, especially rice, if you are needing to up your protein? Or is that too much starch?
I have a question about the chips. Did you make them? If so, how is there a video for that? I went to your blog, but did not see any information about the chips you ate with the beans and pico. Great recipe!
Dillon shows how he does chips on his nacho video; he tosses whole tortillas directly on the oven rack and breaks them up afterward (so much easier than cutting and arranging).
I enjoyed watching this from our friends' villa near Puerto Villarta, Mexico (don't hate!). This recipe beats the heck out of the street restaurants here which are full of oil and salt!! :)
I love your videos! I just became a vegan a while ago and I just made your salsa that I been paying for at the store for a long time and wasted lot of money!! And the beans are soooo good! My girlfriend that I am with isn’t vegan and she don’t like beans! The 2 pounds I made will last a lifetime! Next time I will cut it in half and the recipe! Just got the instant pot and I don’t know why it took me so long for getting one! Can I put half the batch in mason jars and put them in the freezer? What’s the best way to freeze?

Looking forward to making this. What do Americans mean by a can of tomato sauce? Is that simply tomato puree or passata? In Australia tomato sauce is what you put on your cooked meal ie Heinz Ketchup.
Definitely reminiscent of the old days! That batch of pico is a joke compared to the monster batches you use to make! lol Thanks for the video Dillon & Reebs! 💕
Haha you got that right, this batch has nothing on my monster batches! Thanks for watching and the kind comment Laura!
Made this today. Loved it. I top it up with crunchy, chopped green peppers.
Would this apply to any dry bean without soaking in the smartpot??
Love your videos. I’ve been binge watching ha ha. Would you ever serve this over rice or potatoes, especially rice, if you are needing to up your protein? Or is that too much starch?
i just start doing plant base diet i am type one Diabect too so start follow you have lot to learn speical start off
Definitely read the book called Mastering Diabetes, excellent for both type one and type two
@@WellYourWorld oki will get book and read it thank you
I have these going in my instapot right now.
OMG I just found your videos and love you and your wife's recipes I'm going back and watching all of them.😋
Glad you like them! Thanks for the comment Karen!
Hello Dillon, you are literally saving my life ❤ Thank you for this video ❤
I’m making this tonight!!
I've made your charro beans before but it's been a lonnng time. Now I must make some! I love dipping the chips too!
Finally someone noticed this one was a remake! I’ve improved a couple things since then.
Can you put a link in for that thermos? That would work great for my husband.
Sure can! amzn.to/3JexZ4H
I enjoyed watching this from our friends' villa near Puerto Villarta, Mexico (don't hate!). This recipe beats the heck out of the street restaurants here which are full of oil and salt!! :)
I’m going to have to try that recipe for sure.
Plant based eating made simple!!! Love it, thanks Reebs and Dillon’
💕💕
Great job!
Thank you. I love this one
Thank you for the video. Looks like a dream and tasty. 👍
It really is, I hope you enjoy the recipe!
You are making me so hungry!! We're those homemade chips? You have such great videos!
Yes, we use tortillas from the local Mexican market!
Oh my! I am going to make a pot!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤
I’m making this as I type this message to take for work lunch this week! Have you ever served this over rice Dillon?
Yes! It is great with rice!
Oh yum, seems so amazing :D thank you so much for sharing :) love the simplicity
Thank you so much!!! How do you make the chips please?

How many cups of dried pinto beans? The recipe is missing this. Thank you 💓
Good catch! Updating it now!
@@WellYourWorld Thank you! Was wondering the same thing!
Love your videos…do you have a link for the Stanley lunch set?
Yes! You can find it here on Amazon, amzn.to/3V3ctX1
While we do not freeze recipes, we have heard that this recipe freezes well. You can use mason jars or any other containers that are freezer-safe!
Going to make it now
Great recipes! I did some roofing hard work!!!!
Sure is! I do love construction though!
@@WellYourWorld Me too although I dont do it anymore either but I loved the exercise outdoors and every job is different location etc..))) You mentioned you were a boss really cool)))
Recipe looks delicious - unfortunately I only have a slow cooker. Can you please tell me how I would cook it this way. Thank you.
Soak beans overnight, it will take longer. Probably 5-6 hours.
Wow looks so good. I will make it on Saturday
Hope you enjoy!
@@WellYourWorld sure I will. I need to start using my pressure cooker. It’s been sitting for an year and haven’t used it
Looks good, thanks!
It really is! Enjoy the recipe, Connie!
On my 2nd week of batching up instant pot chili. Windows has the chili bean blend in their bulk section- 4 types of beans. #winning
Oh awesome!!
This looks amazing and I'm going to attempt to make it in my crockpot since I don't have an instant pot. How long would you recommend cooking it for? Thanks!!
Soak beans overnight, it will take longer. Probably 5-6 hours.
Hey Dillon and Reebs, you also need to update the recipe with a can of no salt added tomato sauce. 😂 Can't wait to make these tonight! Love the channel! I've watched this video 3 times already.
Fixing that right now thank you!
Yummy yummy!! Thank you for keepin it simple. 🙋♀️👍
Where do you get your T-shirts? They’re great.
Thank you! We make them, you can find all the punny shirts on our website here wellyourworld.com/collections/apparel
When you get Mexican chili powder is it one that says Mexican chili powder on it or is there another name. I don’t think I’ve Sean chili powder with that name.
"That may be true, but I don't care." Same.
Awesome recipes. Do you have the nutritional break down for these recipes :))
No our way of eating disregards all that. Focus on calorie density instead. Search my videos.
What knives do you use? Love your videos❣️❣️❣️ Just ordered your sauces and date powder 🥰

ALSO, your garlic list missed frozen garlic, my fave. 😊
That is also a great option, just more difficult to use in a cold dish like this!
Is there a crockpot version of this? I don't own an instant pot.
Also, I want to say that it’s super hard to find good salt free recipes. Thanks!
I'm glad you found us! All of our recipes are salt, oil, and sugar free!
Wow ..I’m cutting sugar (to decrease inflammation) and I just heard Dr. Mercola say that seed oils are really bad for you. Perfect .. thanks!
@@mynewjourney6803 Mercola is absolutely right on this but dead wrong on other things. I encourage you to find a more legitimate source for nutrition advice. One good place is the Nutrition Facts channel on YT and website.
Can I buy charro beans since I don't have an instapot?
