I have this and love this camera. It works for what I use it for which is hobby photography and my son's martial arts and his competitions. I love the zoom with this. My biggest con is I have such problems using the wifi/nfc and have tested across multiple phones.
I was having trouble with this when downloading pictures but it was because of how I was doing it. If I was on settings or the camera it wouldn’t download but if I was on the pictures it would connect instantly
I use one of these alongside a Canon DSLR. My DSLR is definitely preferred whenever possible, but I do think it's worth having both. The lack of true optical zoom on phone cameras means that, unless whatever I'm shooting is right in front of me, they aren't super useful for my purposes most of the time. I feel comfortable leaving something like this in my trunk for on-the-spot photo needs where I'd rather not treat my DSLR the same, and it's also a great option for concert photography. Many venues - where I live, at least - make a stink if audience members bring "professional-grade" cameras (basically anything with an interchangable lens, regardless of whether or not it's actually up to pro standards), and only allow phones or point-and-shoots. This is a great alternative for getting those good close-up shots that a phone can't while avoiding getting your things confiscated by venue security with the personality of a TSA agent.
2022: Sounds perfect for me where my phone won't cut it. I'm still nursing along an elder Coolpix P100 from 2009. Looks like I found a good B500 refurb on Amazon. Thanks for the pro input.
My issue with every Nikon Coolpix I've had is the battery door latch broke on every single one I've owned, in less than a year's time. Wasn't fun toting around a duct taped Nikon around lol. But the quality of the pics and zoom for a casual photographer is amazing!

I bought this camera because Costco had a good deal on it and at 40x zoom, hey, I could not resist. I wanted to shoot the moon mostly and I find that I get surprisingly sharp moon images hand held. On a tripod, I have found it to be difficult to keep the subject in the frame. Overall I like it. It absolutely does not replace my DSLR but it’s a fun camera to pull out for various occasions. This camera is an old design. I bought it 5 years ago and it cost a lot more than $200. I have used it a lot and have had no issues with it. I think that’s why the build quality is so good, everything just gets cheaper over time. And I just upgraded the firmware this morning, Nikon is still supporting. The Wi-Fi/bluetooth features are awesome.
I use this camera for my channel and it works for me I mean it's a cheap camera but it gets the job done. It shoots better when it's very very bright outside but when it gets dark it's hard to control the aperture. And OMG the batteries are a pain since they run out fast!!!
Lesego Tlhosane i would recommend not buying it. I’ve had many problems with this camera, as well as many other people have. You can’t transfer videos from the camera to your phone, which is very stressful
I love cameras that use AA batteries. When I was on a trip to Mexico and my batteries were flaking out on me I just went to a general store where I didn't even speak the language and was able to pick up batteries. You don't know how handy it is until you don't have it
I am a pro that has used Nikons for more than 40 years and still own 7 DSLRs. I bought this a s pocket camera to go with my Iphone camera for 95.95 refurbished. I am so far very impressed with it and will carry it when traveling. I am just taking snapshots and not working there is no need carry a DSLR with the 2.8 lenses that are really heavy. Good review.

I have the B500 camera for 3 years and many times I use it rather than my DSLRs for taking pictures. Battery life is superb, I bought rechargeable AA batteries and it takes days to recharge. Its wide angle field is very good for landscapes. The only problem is no manual controls, particularly for shutter speed; most of pictures are shaky.
If the zoom range is not a dealbreaker for you, and you're interested in learning a lot about photography, I recommend to buy a used DSLR. Sure, it might not be new, but it would have more features and a better image quality than this camera.
Excellent review. Clear and concise. One question. Does the screen rotate up 180 degrees? I do a lot of self takes and find a flip screen invaluable. If not is there a similar option that does have a 180 or fully articulated flip screen?
I just got this camera this black Friday (2021 of course) And I love it so far. My homie and I expected it to be 1080 P, but I said it looked 4K and he said so as well. Needed some vid proof that it was good, so yeah. Love this thing though
The fact that the camera uses battieris is the best. Imagine you are in the mountains or in a rural area and you cant Charge it, just put New battieris in or buy rechargeble Double A Batteries
I bought that camera 2 weeks ago but I returned it after using it for 2 days because I couldn't keep buying its batteries since it is not rechargeable and the lens can not be changed. I now bought canon eos 4000D dslr and I found it far better at almost same price. The only thing I miss is the extraordinary zoom on the coolpix
I’ve been recording my travel videos on my cellphone ever since i started doing travel videos (hiking, parks, ect.) and i’m thinking about using this camera which my mom bought for her Alaska trip she was on a few years ago. Zoom is an issue for my cellphone but this should help. Great video and thanks for going into detail.
I love AA batteries, they are convenient and safest of all , only downside back then was charging time which was a problem decades ago , now in 2023 AA batteries charge pretty Quick and have 5+ Years of life if it's a Duracell so AA batteries are Plus Point

Quick question, does it shoot in black an white, or filters? Is there a software disk? Bought the Sony H300 simply because they didn't carry the Nikon Coolpix. Tried several stores. And as far as I know, the Sony does not shoot in Black & White or filters. No Wi-Fi. The camera still did the job. Would have loved to try the Nikon.

Hey there. I do not own this camera, but in several different reviews it was said that besides very decent moon photography, low light settings are a weak point of this camera, taking grainy pictures. Maybe check these out as well.
Thanks for this great video. I am looking to by a second hand camero for my 12 year old girl that is starting to get interested in photography. She never had a camera and only takes pictures with har phone. But i 've noticed she is talented. She seems to have "the eye". I am doubting to buy an easier to use b700 or maybe the more difficult to use, a dslr : the nikon d3200 (i can buy the b700 for 100 euro and the d3200 for 150 euro. What would be the better choice for a beginner. I'm afraid the dslr would maybe to intimidating and the b700 is maybe easier to use. So maybe the b700 and if i see, in a year or so, she's really into it, i buy a dslr (d3200 or so)? What is your opinion? The b700 has image stabilization, so that is a great advantage, and a movable screen. And can be connected to via wifi i think. So what do you think? The b700 or a dslr like the d3200? @@montyandtheboys2.049 Canon sx 740 hs is better in some parts, and the Nikon is better at other parts. But the canon 740 is a more compact camera, and I will say it’s more powerful for it size. The only down sides with the canon is that it don’t have a mic input, it can’t shot slow motion, and it don’t have a touchscreen.

Good video. I just bought one used for $149. Did not come with cords, external power pack, or manual. Wondering if screen flips 180 degrees. Camera was made in 2016. Other reviews seem to say video quality is about as good as from current cell phones, and you mentioned that too.

I received this camera for Christmas. I have had some issues with it freezing up on me. What I mean is there are times where the zoom is stuck out or the zoom is stuck in I can't turn it on I can't turn it off... So I have to actually open up the battery compartment and then close it back up again for it to release. have you heard of anything like this before with this camera?
hey there Kim, Larry here and i have the same issue and must use the same solution as you. I don't know if you have experienced it in other instances as well. I have. Sometimes in syncing through the Nikon app i get freeze issues and have to open the battery compartment and then restart. And i do have the latest firmware version installed. So if its something Nikon could address in firmware it hasn't happened yet.

Hey river, I was wondering what you thought about the a7ii in 2020? It can be found new for about 1000$ with a lens and it seems like a cool option for someone jumping into full frame photography/hybrid work. How different is it from the a7 iii which you did a video on fairly recently?
I have the L340 but thats developed a very strange fault now after the recent heatwave of 40c here in the UK after 60% zoom I hear a clunking and the image jumps about. It was never very good in auto mode always blowing out the sky and becomes almost washed out. Just got the B500 used on eBay for half price so I'm excited to compare the two. You say about the megapixel my l340 is 20 Megapixel but it's not always about the megapixel I mean my Redmi Note 11 Pro Plus has 108 megapixel but no optical zoom and digital zooms only as good as 4x at best. I'm glad it has 1080p the l340 had only 720p and the micrphone was nothing good. AA battery life is great I buy the premium batteries and it was always better then recharchables were on my first Nikon.

I bought one from Amazon a few days ago, and I love it. I just bought another one for my parents as a belated Father's Day gift. It definitely has a learning curve, but the photos are very good for the price range. Haven't used the video mode that much yet but as a beginner it's a good camera especially for my needs at least.
One question : How I can fix the fact that dose not have the jack for the microphone ? I need to do yoga videos, what do you recommend? Also how I can send the videos and pictures from the Camara. You talked about everything but you never mention the actual optical and digital zoom as in 40× or 60×
The quality is probably still better than your phone because of the quality of the lens. I have the P950.

thank you so much for this video! i'm a beginner photographer that's been shooting from my phone all this while and i was looking for a camera that's efficient and inexpensive. this is one of the few nikon cameras i was looking at, and you've helped me eliminate this one because of the audio and quality aspects that are supposedly really similar to a phone's specifications. do you have any other suggestions for easy to use dslr cameras from nikon for around 200 dollars? i want a camera that has a good zooming capacity, good audio and video quality for me to shoot my friends and family, an adjustable screen, and a good modifiable shutter speed so i can capture fast moving sports games and things like that. i also want it to allow me to manually make changes to the settings of the camera. and of course, it shouldn't be disposable like this one; i want it to last for a few years at least. i'm hoping to hear from you sson. until then, i'll definitely check out some of your other review videos. once again, thank you so much!

No the camera doesnt flip up or turn around nor does it support a field monitor for viewing even the snap bridge app is only applicable for photos
I like that you can send the photos to your phone! Eventually when I get more money, I'll get a better one! Im on a budget! And great review! Helped my solidify my decision! I just want crispy pics!

I'm looking at this camera for nighttime photography. Can you tell me what the pros and cons are for low light shooting with the nikon coolpix b500? Specifically, without flash, and for northern lights photography. I also want to do video of the aurora, so any night video shooting experience would also be helpful. Thank you!
Hey there. I do not own this camera, but in several different reviews it was said that besides very decent moon photography, low light settings are a weak point of this camera, taking grainy pictures. Maybe check these out as well.

I have this camera atm, Moon pictures can be decent but for like, city lights etc. Not so good. Otherwise, its a good camera anyway
Thanks for this great video. I am looking to by a second hand camero for my 12 year old girl that is starting to get interested in photography. She never had a camera and only takes pictures with har phone. But i 've noticed she is talented. She seems to have "the eye". I am doubting to buy an easier to use b700 or maybe the more difficult to use, a dslr : the nikon d3200 (i can buy the b700 for 100 euro and the d3200 for 150 euro. What would be the better choice for a beginner. I'm afraid the dslr would maybe to intimidating and the b700 is maybe easier to use. So maybe the b700 and if i see, in a year or so, she's really into it, i buy a dslr (d3200 or so)? What is your opinion? The b700 has image stabilization, so that is a great advantage, and a movable screen. And can be connected to via wifi i think. So what do you think? The b700 or a dslr like the d3200? Its ok in its place. When theres alot of light, pictures are beautiful. But in the dark its very grainy/low definition, even with flash

@@montyandtheboys2.049 Canon sx 740 hs is better in some parts, and the Nikon is better at other parts. But the canon 740 is a more compact camera, and I will say it’s more powerful for it size.
The only down sides with the canon is that it don’t have a mic input, it can’t shot slow motion, and it don’t have a touchscreen.
So would this be a good choice for getting started for making TH-cam videos? I’m wanting to get away from using my cellphone. What’s your recommendation for a $500 budget?

Good video. I just bought one used for $149. Did not come with cords, external power pack, or manual. Wondering if screen flips 180 degrees. Camera was made in 2016. Other reviews seem to say video quality is about as good as from current cell phones, and you mentioned that too.

I received this camera for Christmas. I have had some issues with it freezing up on me. What I mean is there are times where the zoom is stuck out or the zoom is stuck in I can't turn it on I can't turn it off... So I have to actually open up the battery compartment and then close it back up again for it to release. have you heard of anything like this before with this camera?
hey there Kim, Larry here and i have the same issue and must use the same solution as you. I don't know if you have experienced it in other instances as well. I have. Sometimes in syncing through the Nikon app i get freeze issues and have to open the battery compartment and then restart. And i do have the latest firmware version installed. So if its something Nikon could address in firmware it hasn't happened yet.

I have the L340 but thats developed a very strange fault now after the recent heatwave of 40c here in the UK after 60% zoom I hear a clunking and the image jumps about. It was never very good in auto mode always blowing out the sky and becomes almost washed out. Just got the B500 used on eBay for half price so I'm excited to compare the two. You say about the megapixel my l340 is 20 Megapixel but it's not always about the megapixel I mean my Redmi Note 11 Pro Plus has 108 megapixel but no optical zoom and digital zooms only as good as 4x at best. I'm glad it has 1080p the l340 had only 720p and the micrphone was nothing good. AA battery life is great I buy the premium batteries and it was always better then recharchables were on my first Nikon.

I bought one from Amazon a few days ago, and I love it. I just bought another one for my parents as a belated Father's Day gift. It definitely has a learning curve, but the photos are very good for the price range. Haven't used the video mode that much yet but as a beginner it's a good camera especially for my needs at least.
One question : How I can fix the fact that dose not have the jack for the microphone ? I need to do yoga videos, what do you recommend?
Also how I can send the videos and pictures from the Camara. O bough it second hand at very good conditions. But now I am wondering if made a mistake. Also I did not think about the batteries that's extra cost.
