      how do I take a pic? I can't find the shutter button? my sister got this for me as a gift. I tried to use it tonight, but couldn't figure it out. I just want to take pics for now and use the other modes when more comfortable.

      @@deadlycreature3359 Look at the top of the camera. You should see the on/off button. To the left is the "mode dial" make sure it's on the green icon that looks like a tiny camera. The shutter button is the the button forward of the on/off button. Around the shutter button is the job-dial that allows you to zoom in and out. I suggest reading the manual. If it didn't come with one you can download a digital one on Nikon's website: downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/products/327/COOLPIX_B500.html

      @@ScottJWaldron I wanted to thank you so much. I lost the manual. I got it a few months ago, but never used it. the manual online did help a lot and you saying where the shutter was. it felt weird to me because with point and shoot cameras I press the button. this felt like I had to touch and release. I will try to get better at it by experimenting with video and pics. I did take some pics of moms garden.

    I use one of these alongside a Canon DSLR. My DSLR is definitely preferred whenever possible due to (naturally) the lens options, manual control, and higher mpx, but I do think it's worth having both. The lack of true optical zoom on phone cameras means that, unless whatever I'm shooting is right in front of me, they aren't super useful. I feel comfortable leaving something like this in my trunk for on-the-spot photo needs where I'd rather not treat my DSLR the same, and it's also a great option for concert photography. Many venues - where I live, at least - make a stink if audience members bring "professional-grade" cameras (basically anything with an interchangable lens, regardless of whether or not it's actually up to pro standards), and only allow phones or point-and-shoots. This is a great alternative for getting those good close-up shots that a phone can't while avoiding getting your things confiscated by venue security with the personality of a TSA agent.

    Just a note regarding the batteries. We're using 2300 mAhr NiMH units in our B500 and normally get almost one week of filming our little daily walking clips. We carry a fully charged spare set with us (just is case) starting about three or four days after swapping.
    Using the 2300 mAhr batteries is crucial as lower power ones just won't "drive" the camera properly.
    Thanks for posting this video, Scott.

      How is the autofocus in video mode for you? Does it focus where you want it to? I wasn't able to try it out for too long, and people commenting here seem interested in using this camera for video. Thanks for the interesting and positive comment!

    • @jaylittleton1
      @jaylittleton1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ScottJWaldron In video mode, the auto-focus is a bit lethargic/slow and also easily influenced by objects between the camera and the target, very much so in distance filming. For example, watch our video "RedTailed Hawk on Gazebo on Rainy Day". It is shot at about 260 yards (240 meters) and in front of wife & I are a fence, some tall grass, and some trees. It was also raining so that may have affected focus.
      The "Little Cinnea Returns at Breakfast Today" video is from the same hour but much closer. Hope this helps. We're new at this and went for the B500 after seeing the distance shots from a friend's camera.

      th-cam.com/video/Q3_-q0sH2ME/w-d-xo.html
      The jumping focus in video is a pretty standard thing with cameras that are based on "contrast detect" autofocus. The moving focus is how the camera figures out if the area it wants to focus in is actually in focus (moves the lens back and forth a little bit to see contrast-y pieces of the scene where it wants to focus). Not until somewhat recently are there now cameras with "phase detect" auto-focus directly on the imaging sensor. That phase detect functionality is capable of gauging focus without racking the lens back and forth. Sometimes contrast detect focus can work well, but it depends on the situation and how a given camera was designed. Audio is really nice in your videos, so that's also good to know about the B500!

    the camera has drawbacks but let's not forget they designed it within a considerable budget, those who want to settle for an inexpensive camera are likely to get this one, other options like Nikon A300 which's definitely not good for shooting videos. atleast this one has 1080p video shooting format

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree there. Though, I'd much rather use a current smartphone for video than this unless I really needed that long zoom lens. I think camera manufacturers are engineering their own demise when they sell cameras like this. I wonder how much more manufacturing cost is involved in 1" sensor cameras (that they sell for exorbitant prices outside of the very old original Sony RX100). Reasonably priced cameras that actually give incoming users true benefits over phones are a necessity for dedicated cameras to continue existing. Digicams with 1/2.3" sensors had a true purpose for a long time, but I think that time is up for all but very specific uses. But I'm not even sure on that considering how tiny the original and current Sony RX0 cameras are (yet Sony sells the new one for $900 which seems crazy even though I see the value in that one).

    Hello Scott, nice video! I'm looking for a camera to take pictures of people surfing in the beach, do you recommend this camera for this situation? Do the pictures come out shaky when taking pictures of things/people in movement? Thanks for the attention!

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For your use case it might work alright because you should have good lighting outdoors at beaches and the long zoom lens is need, but I'd suggest a similar camera with an electronic viewfinder. When using a viewfinder it's held in a way that's naturally more stable than holding a camera out to look at a back screen. A camera like the Sony DSC-HX400V would probably give you less shaky photos than the B500 for that reason. I had made a video on that one: th-cam.com/video/QmMdjrDxyIY/w-d-xo.html
      Other options could be the Nikon B700 or Panasonic FZ300, but I haven't used them at all.
      I can't give you any guarantee because I haven't tried these "bridge" cameras in an action setting. Moving subjects is always a challenge. Many many years ago I had a Fujifilm bridge camera and it was a real struggle to get photos at an airshow, though I assume autofocus in these camera has improved a lot since ~2005. With effort and practice and learning how the given camera works best with focusing settings, I do think you could get nice images out of any of these cameras for those nice bright beach conditions.

      Something like the Canon Rebel SL2, Canon EOS M50, or Sony A6400 would be good options for TH-cam video production, but they are all quite a bit more expensive than a camera like the B500. These three cameras have good video autofocus that makes it a lot easier to produce videos and have features like a microphone port (a good starter mic would be the Rode VideoMicro). Camera companies don't often put features like a microphone port in cheaper cameras. If you have a decent cellphone, that's a good way to start making videos (get a smartphone mount and a tripod so you don't have to hold the phone while talking to it).

    • @olmtheagency4030

      i have to disagree.
      The NIKON B500 is actually pretty good for TH-cam Videos if you have proper lighting inside.
      inside, your sound for the recordings are controlled.
      As for outside videos/tutorial, the camera is a beast. VERY VERY GOOD.
      You can use your mobile as a remote to take pictures and videos.

      @ScottJWaldron  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@olmtheagency4030 Do you have examples? The videos on your channel don't appear to be filmed with this camera. It's fine having an opinion but the best way to show your apparent expertise for this camera is in making your own videos on TH-cam demonstrating it's use instead of posting multiple comments to someone else's comment section. With these videos I use the camera for a limited amount of time. I do what I can. I have my own opinion about 1/2.3" bridge camera's compared to ILCs.

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At that budget I'd suggest putting it into buying a decent smart phone if you don't already have one. If you really want a $200 dedicated camera and want it to be new then look at any of the small pocketable digicams from the major brands like Sony, Canon, Panasonic, and Nikon . They are all probably very similar. Cameras like this don't have a lot of benefit over something that can fit in a pocket because the sensors inside are the same size and the lenses are "slow".

      The main thing this adds over a recent smart phone is the big zoom lens. Image quality isn't any better than an iphone 8 or whatever. I'd suggest a camera like the Canon EOS M100 if you want a camera to learn and grow in photography.

      Learn the settings/functionalities in this camera and it will do you justice.
      Best results come from being used OUTSIDE on a SUNNY DAY. Excellent pictures especially when the pictures settings are on MAX.
      Rechargeable batteries are best. Get 2-3 of a 4pack and never buy batteries again.
      The worst thing is there is NO protection for your screen on the back.
      Perhaps keep the B500 wrapped in cloth or bubble wrap and then place in a camera bag.
      The WiFi, Bluetooth features a major plus to send pic as you shoot them.
      You can even use your phone to take pictures remotes without being behind on next to the camera.

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It looks there are not a lot of options for a new digicam in the $250 range. I'm seeing a Sony DSC-WX350. The Sony has less optical zoom range, but it's a lot smaller. I'm also seeing the Canon PowerShot SX530. That one has even an even longer optical zoom. If you want to spend around $300, there is the Panasonic Lumix DC-FZ80. That has an electronic viewfinder, 4k video. If you want to jump all the way up to $400 then you can get a larger 1" sensor with the original Sony RX-100 or the Canon Powershot G9 X. I haven't personally used any of these other ones, but considering cost and size I'd probably go with the DSC-WX350 if I wanted something simple. Otherwise, I'd save more money for something with a bigger sensor.

If it doesn't have full manual mode use a "sport" scene mode. Not much else you can do. Inherent limitations of a tiny sensor camera with a small maximum aperture lens. 🤷

Your best bet is to search on TH-cam about webcam use and not general camera reviews because that use needs very specific features irrelevant to photography.

My current entry level camera suggestions are the Canon EOS M100 and the Sony A6000. A step above those two would be the Canon EOS M50 and the Sony A6400. Lower cost bridge cameras like this one are more about getting some decent functionality into a dedicated camera with a large lens. Unless you really want a long telephoto lens camera for a low cost, I'd suggest getting the Canon M100 and a kit lens to start. It will blow the B500 away photo and video quality wise.

      IMO a decent smartphone is a better option than this for video unless you really need optical zoom. No idea on a specific recommendation, that would take time to research. Sites like mpb.com sell used camera gear often with a warranty.

      You should email Nikon support for that one. There are always quirks with that. A camera for that needs "clean" output (meaning no on screen display showing), and the camera needs to be able to stay on in that situation when it's running but not recording (many cameras don't even give users an option to stay on idle like that).

      Generally, lower megapixels on a phone is good. Don't the recent iphones have 12mp? Phones and cameras have a little sensor inside, so having fewer pixels means each one gets more light on it. If you use the long zoom on the B500 or you like having a dedicated camera with physical buttons, keep it. Otherwise recent phones will take similar quality photos (At the focal lengths the given phone supports. Look at recent phones with 2 or 3 cameras on the back. Each one has a different focal length. Eg. wide, normal, and telephoto)

    would this be good for sports photography and videography ? or what would be a good cheap beginner camera for that ?

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my opinion, probably one of the worst cameras for those tasks. It has "contrast detect" autofocus, a small maximum aperture lens (the size of the hole that lets light into the camera), limited configurability/control, and a small sensor.
      What you want to do are some of the most challenging things to do with camera equipment.
      For sports, I'd suggest an older used DSLR that was mid-range or pro level when released. Something like a Nikon D7000, 7100, or 7200 with a decent zoom lens. However, older DSLR cameras are not great with video, especially if you want to use autofocus in video. Something like the Canon EOS 80D could do good video and sports photos.
      If you want mirrorless or digicam like this B500 then look for a camera with "phase detect" autofocus. Very few all-in-one digicams have it right now. I can't think of any I'd recommend that are low cost. Something like a Sony A6000 with a decent zoom lens might be a good mirrorless starter camera for photo and video if you don't need a selfie flip screen (if you do you need to get the new A6100).

The HDMI connector is a micro type-d. So to connect it to a TV you'd need a cable with micro hdmi on one end and the normal sized connector on the other (like this: amzn.to/35aumbl ).

      I haven't used the sx430, but it looks extremely similar to the Nikon. There are a few differences such as a somewhat longer lens on the Canon and a slightly wide lens on the Nikon. Maybe a Sony A6000, though you could find a cheap used camera as well. The B500 and similar cameras have a very tiny sensor plus slow lens and it doesn't do RAW photos, so don't expect much from a camera like the one in this video (it would be just fine to use your smartphone at that point...). Cameras like the A6000 have a large sensor and even the lens it usually comes with is okay for what you are trying to do. Lighting and where you will be taking photos of products will be more important I'd say. The best camera in the world will take a bad photo if everything else isn't great.

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on how much distance you need to be from them. Some macro lenses you need to be very close. Others you will have more room to work. I didn't try the B500 in that situation. In the B500's dedicated macro mode needs the lens to be around 0.4 inches (1 cm) away from the subject. The normal focusing you can get as close at 1 ft (30 cm), but I'm not sure how much "magnification" the B500 provides with normal focus at 1 ft.
      You can buy a cheap DSLR with a ~50mm lens and extension tubes. This is what I do usually. I have two videos related to that:
      th-cam.com/video/ijzOwdMLViQ/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/Ed1q0EClflU/w-d-xo.html
      Or you can buy something like the Tokina AT-X PRO D 100mm f2.8 Macro Lens for Canon DSLRs at around $350 new. But with a new Canon DSLR you will probably be over $700. You can buy used warrantied gear on KEH.com. With that Tokina at 1 ft you get 1:1 magnification.
      Whatever you get I suggest using the camera in manual focus mode and consider lighting (that's safe for your subjects). With macro you need a lot of light.

      Either one would be perfect with the right lens. Canon has one EF-M macro lens called the "Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens" ( amzn.to/2ECMFYV ). The neat thing about that one is it has a built-in ring light. I haven't used it, but it looks like in normal focusing mode it will be around 4 inches from the subject. It also appears to have a "super macro" mode.
      It looks like sony has an E-mount macro lens as well called the "Sony E 30mm f/3.5 Macro Lens" ( amzn.to/2UlQvML ). Specifications look similar to the Canon, but without the light and super macro mode.

    which better canon sx430 vs nikon b500...?

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't used the sx430, but it looks extremely similar to the Nikon. There are a few differences such as a somewhat longer lens on the Canon and a slightly wide lens on the Nikon. The Nikon records video at 1080p, but the Canon only does 720p. I'd probably go with whichever one is cheaper...

    • @ScottJWaldron
      @ScottJWaldron  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't do that type of photography, but from what I've seen the general preference is for very wide angle lenses. This camera is limited to a 22.5mm full-frame equivalent lens. It would be impossible to get a wider view on this camera because the lens is not removable. If you get a normal interchangeable lens camera you can eventually figure out what type of lens will work best for the look you want.

      The B500 is pretty old at this point. back then AA was appealing to that audience. Easy access and you could use rechargable NiMH if desired. Funny thing is they removed the tilting screen from the B600 but they did add a rechargeable battery (probably a cost savings measure). The only purpose I see for these cameras is the long optical zoom lens versus their price.

      The B500 has a 40x zoom and the A1000 has a 35x one. If you want the most zoom and don't care about size then the B500 is better, but personally I think the A1000 is more versatile.

      @kido tatsuhiko No, they are probably comparable, but the A1000 is a lot newer. I expect it to have more features. They both have a small 1/2.3" sensor inside and likely very similar processing so the photos are probably not too different. I mean that the A1000 is smaller. I personally see that as a big benefit with cameras like this. It also does 4K video compared to 1080p for the B500.

      If you want something that zooms as far as possible at the lowest cost, the Canon PowerShot SX530 HS has more reach and is a bit less expensive ( Affiliate Amazon store link to the Canon camera: amzn.to/2N7YeKL ). Canon's phone application is also better than Nikon's (you can connect these cameras through WIFI to a smart phone). The only reason to get the Nikon over the Canon is the flip screen.

      Power-up the camera.
      Select "SCENE" mode from the top dial.
      Click "MENU".
      Go over to the left and click on the MOVIE CAMERA icon.
      Move to the right, CLICK ON "MOVIE OPTIONS.
      Click on the "OK" button.
      Scroll down to the HS 480/4x
      This gives you about 30 seconds of true SLOW MO video and then it continues in regular speed mode.
      Sadly, I don't think there is a setting to extend the SLOW MOTION video recording beyond 30 seconds.
      Seems like a lot of steps. Do it a few times and it becomes a breeze.

      Almost anything could work. Do you have a decent phone? This camera probably would not be as good as a nice phone for video, and the B500 doesn't have a screen that can face you in a vlogging situation. Phones are designed to film and record people, so even things like audio quality on a phone could be better for "vlogging" than entry level cameras like the B500. When you want a serious camera for TH-cam/vlogs, I'd suggest the Canon EOS M50 that I use.
