Future Breed Machine was their flagship song before Bleed. Still is for me though. Used to be the show ender! I even got to introduce it for them at a concert once, just ‘cause Jens heard me over the rest of the crowd! Such an honor! 🤘🤩
There's actually an article on these guys in The Journal of Music Theory that I read in grad school. The author coined the term "rhythmic dissonance" to describe Tomas' unique approach to layering polyrhythms (usually in the kick) over 4/4 (usually in the high hat and/or snare). The layering isn't new but what is new is that they will slightly alter the polyrhythm once every 20 measures so that the two meters never quite line back up and so that they don't produce a macrorhythm. I know in interviews they talk as if they free compose these patterns but the analysis seems to suggest that this is too consistent to be unintentional; which makes it genius! "Future Breed Machine" and "Rational Gaze" I think were two of the songs analyzed that demonstrate this best.
This is really insightful bro! Normally I don't read the comments but I just had to for this one. I think the reason that the Mesh don't sound cold and calculated is BECAUSE they use the alternating device. Genius! As you probably are as well for recognizing it!
Curious how you mention that the vocalist is also in tuned with everyone. You are absolutely correct! In some of their live shows, Jens Kidman, the vocalist, can be seen tapping his finger on the mic _in time_ with the song! So not only is he tuned will with everyone, he is also counting as everyone else! It ain't easy to pinpoint and line up their discog when it comes to Tomas Haake. Each song is very different from each other, and even more so when it comes to the drums! Nevertheless, I do have a couple of recommendations. Clockworks is widely considered as a great definition of what the band is and a great example what they can be, so if you want to see what Tomas Haake is capable of, that's the song. Nostrum is said to be the Bleed for hands; not much actions with the feet but your hands will be very busy. Great video! Would love for you to react a few of their full songs in the future!

@@werewolf2003002 Indeed. Very happy I finally got to see them too. Fan since Chaosphere and they’ve always been a bucket list for me. Can’t wait for their return 🔥🔥
I've seen Meshuggah live a couple of times. Every time I'm equally amazed by their power and precision. Everyone in that band just f***ing delivers on stage. And everything is tight as F***. Even the lighting guy is doing his shit live and following the band's crazy polyrhythms. Oh - and I've never seen them count in a song. There's no 1-2-3-4. They just go. And like you noticed at 8.01 - the vocals fit the rhythm. That goes for all their songs. The vocals are not there to do a melody over the instrumentals - it's part of the rhythm. Listen to their album obZen - It's awesome
I think instead of trying to analyze their music from a music theory perspective im just going to go with flow and feel. Seems like the way to go with such awesomeness.
I would start in chronological order. Start with: Contradictions Collapse, then the NONE EP, Future Breed Machine, Chaosphere etc.... Also the session where Tomas is wearing the red headphones is well worth a watch. I believe it's the Haake and Lövgren 2005 session.
So glad the algorithm sent you my way brother! Combustion is a good in your face more "simple" song... but a great listen. Pulling Straws at Random would be my all time favorite. Keep it real man!
When you said that you understand how the ball bounces... It touched me a bit. You just gained a sub! If you love Meshuggah, we love you! Lol. Keep doing what you do man cos you rock! \m/
I heard that they write most (all?) songs in 4/4 on the computer, and everyone practices and learn the songs using the recorded tracks. I agree that the drumcam version of Clockworks is a good place to go from here.
A few of my favourites for reaction are Gene Hoglan -- The Philosopher, 66Samus -- Hear Me, and any video of Estepario playing a difficult song one-handed.
Meshuggah is my absolute favorite band just because of Tomas but even if he wasn't in the band I'd then have everyone else to still make it my favorite. You're such a chill guy that I trust what you say but I've already looked through your channel before I made this comment and you're the real deal. Seriously man I want to keep hearing your takes on bands.
Good stuff mate! Subbed! Their older stuff has some real cool stuff in it, stengah and future breed machine is bangers for sure! My heart is always closest to Combustion from the ObZen album, such a weird punkish feel to it. A cool thing that Drumeo did, if you're looking for ways to show your skills, is they made a progression video of learning the drums to a meshuggah track. Maybe a thing you could try as well?
Definitely check out the Clockworks Drum Playthrough, which is him one taking the studio track with guitar and bass live off the floor. All three of them one take the track simultaneously. But the drums are the most impressive
Their sound is like a chaos you can float peacefully on top of. A lot of that is from how approachable it is given how complex it is. You almost always have that hi hat ticking along steadily so you got something to rock (or headbang) along with. I believe this is true, that they pretty much write all their music as 4/4 with polyrhythm on top. I also think that they write a lot of the songs remotely and even practice individually. Some tour had like no full band practice before it started. Oh also Haake is two syllables Haa-ke
This is fantastic information! SO thank you for this. And I will also be pronouncing his name correctly from now on. Apologies for getting it wrong at first.
Future Breed Machine is a great place to start dude. The bit just after that breakdown gets me so hyped, listen to it religiously before rugby games lmao. Enjoy your videos man, keep it up!
@Drumlion Music can't wait until you check it out. After hearing the clip, I did another listen through of Destroy Erase Improve, specifically repeating FBM. The whole album crushes. It's hard to believe it is almost 30 years old. Also, Soul Burn has a great groove to it.
Hey man, you should def watch the whole playthrough of the Clockworks snippet in this video. Also watch Meinl Cymbals - Matt Halpern - "Blood Eagle" by Periphery video on youtube if you have not already. That is a sick drummer aswell :)
@@DrumlionMusic Or even better, do the Periphery - Satellites (Drum Playthrough) I just watched it, gave me goosebumps. What a great drummer, I can tell even though Im mainly a guitarrist. He gives me the same feeling when I watch him play drums as I get when I watch David Gilmour from Pink floyd play guitarsolos live :)
I could give you a list. I always can't wait for people to hear Corridor of Chameleons. It's just so banging. Cyanide Christ is good. Glints Collide and so many songs on the Nothing album
As far as I know, Tomas actually writes most of the lyrics. I saw in a studio video that he will whisper the lyrics onto a demo track and give them to the singer Jens to work out how to scream them. It makes a lot of sense that the vocals are so tuned into the rhythm. Then again, sometimes the guitarists write rhythm patterns on a computer for Tomas to learn/adapt into something playable. The whole band is just so in tune!
Cool video! we need more drummers who feel like we do that Meshuggah are just aliens! I'm sure someone has mentioned this already, but there is an interview (I think its on the digipak version bonus DVD in the Koloss album) where Tomas had to spend 6 months learning how to play Bleed. They wrote it in a DAW with toontrack products and then he had to go back and learn not only the patterns but also the stamina to be able to play it all the way through! Have you ever checked out Steve Shelton from Confessor? He's like the first drummer I became aware of that was doing impossible rhythmic things with Confessor back in 1991! the song "Condemned" from their first album is ultra-technical sounding, but he did a deconstruction video showing how he wrote the patterns for that song and its all in polyrhythm territory like moving the ride cymbal into 3s while playing bass and snare notes..... He's also got a cymbal choke technique that I havent seen a lot of other people use and he sounds like no-one else. Check him out!
Suggest Pravus or Dancers to a Discordant System. Also for a good blend of their best songs up to 2008, the Alive movie or album have fantastic sound quality and performance.
Great content! As far as any Meshuggah music to point you to. It's all amazing. Catch-33 is a good starting point if interested. Their new one Immutable is a nasty album to get through as well. Hope this helps!
Dude, you should look up that Meshuggah bit in this video you said just blew your mind a little (06:43). It's a legendary Meshuggah classic, it's called Stengah and came out on their 2002 album 'Nothing'. The original video is called 'Tomas Haake - Wincent Drumcam Spotlight' here on youtube which is an amazing drum playthrough. Would be very interesting to hear your thoughts on the grooves in this song =)
Hello Newphew in Law. TH-cam actually suggested you to me. Getting out there my man. Combustion off of Obzen (same album as Bleed) has always been one of my favorites. It's not that crazy but it's a great example of Thomas just being in the pocket and killing it.
Dude, I found the live video of Bleed and I was blown away by the percussion and how tight the whole band is. Just a beast on drums. And his last name is pronounced like Hak-uh. I did the same thing. Having a weird name , Ibby, before it was in vogue 😉, I have heard every derivation of it and have become more tuned in to correct name pronunciation. Anyway, I watched an interview with Thomas and he said it took him 6 months to work out Bleed and feel comfortable with it.
I've been doing better on pronouncing it because i want to respect the correct pronunciation of names. I understand what it's like to have your name mispronounced lol. Thats so interesting how Bleed was wrote, and then had to be reverse engineered for that long just to play it!
Great video man. Cant go wrong with Future Breeding Machine, this song doesnt age. All recomendations below are great but I'd say you have to listen Catch 33 album. It's a concept album, like a 47 minute song, about "existence" and "purpose" ( their lyrics are so philosophycal, I could be wrong) and the whole music arrangement and atmosphere is one of a kind.
Yes, "Future Breed Machine" is absolutely a song you should listen to! "Stengah", too and "Combustion" is another all time favourite. I think "Inside what's within behind" also is quite interesting from a drumming perspective (well... as if any Meshuggah song was NOT interesting from a drumming perspective...)
So yeah, my math'n was struggling to math on this one lol!

@@rubaidaallen2764 I saw them a couple months ago too, was pretty incredible yeah, big tick mark on the bucket list
@@werewolf2003002 Indeed. Very happy I finally got to see them too. Fan since Chaosphere and they’ve always been a bucket list for me. Can’t wait for their return 🔥🔥
“I” is staggeringly good, my favourite “song”.
His name is pronounced Haakeh. The “e” is pronounced, as in “eh”.
Just listen to all Meshuggah tracks. None disappoint. I saw em live a few months ago and ya, just awesome lol
I saw them live, it's just something you have to experience. It's so theatrical and intense its life altering.
I just seen Meshuggah in Atlanta, Ga . was Amazing
I can only imagine how awesome this experience was...
Meshuggah, our favorite jazz band
I would start in chronological order. Start with: Contradictions Collapse, then the NONE EP, Future Breed Machine, Chaosphere etc.... Also the session where Tomas is wearing the red headphones is well worth a watch. I believe it's the Haake and Lövgren 2005 session.
Sounds good to me!
Great video my friend! You know your stuff! I enjoyed it!
Im really glad for this! Thank you!
This dude has always scared the crap outta me. Terrifyingly talented
It really is spectacular...
So glad the algorithm sent you my way brother! Combustion is a good in your face more "simple" song... but a great listen. Pulling Straws at Random would be my all time favorite. Keep it real man!
Thanks so much for your words and your song picks too! I listened to combustion yesterday and it was 🔥
@@DrumlionMusic Sweet... keep it up my brother!
When you said that you understand how the ball bounces... It touched me a bit. You just gained a sub!
If you love Meshuggah, we love you! Lol.
Keep doing what you do man cos you rock!
\m/
i hugely appreciate this!
I heard that they write most (all?) songs in 4/4 on the computer, and everyone practices and learn the songs using the recorded tracks. I agree that the drumcam version of Clockworks is a good place to go from here.
Oh wow, interesting... I need to look up some interviews of them talking about their song writing process
Aah Meshuggah, from my hometown here in Sweden, been to meny conserts of theirs, always epic
Thats awesome! Oh in my latest video I actually pronounce Tomas name correctly. Im actually kind of proud of it lol.
Yeah it sounded almost right 😊
@@Snotric Yes! I have made progress!
NEVER apologize for living your life and doing what a man must do. Cheers!
I appreciate this
A few of my favourites for reaction are Gene Hoglan -- The Philosopher, 66Samus -- Hear Me, and any video of Estepario playing a difficult song one-handed.
All good picks!
Future Breed Machine is my all time favorite song! That build up is ridiculous. You definitely gotta give it a few listens. Masterpiece!! Great video
Its going to be my next Meshuggah reaction, so im holding off listening to it. I want it to be authentic as possible
Im really glad for this! Thank you! I just dropped a Gojira vid if you have any interest in checking that out
@@DrumlionMusic Love Gorjira checking it out now
@@LilBobbyBrickHands nice! I hope you dig it!
Hmmm. This does sound intriguing! Thanks for this comment! And huge thanks for you sub!
Go with your instinct 👌 Future Breed Machine, great entry into the Suggah
This sounds inevitable to me. Future breed machine has been mentioned several times here
Cool video! A good first one would be the one you said you need to hear, "Future Breed Machine".
Future Breed Machine is a great place to start dude. The bit just after that breakdown gets me so hyped, listen to it religiously before rugby games lmao. Enjoy your videos man, keep it up!
I will definitely be giving this a listen! I have so much Meshuggah homework to do lol.
Tomas is damn ALIEN :) craziest drummer
Lol true!
Haake is sick. Both an inspiring and intimidating.
Hell yeah
First time seeing one of your vids. Instantly subscribed. Also I forgot what a banger "Future Breed Machine" was
Thats going to be my next Meshuggah reaction. I purposely avoided listening to that track because im saving it for the video
@Drumlion Music can't wait until you check it out. After hearing the clip, I did another listen through of Destroy Erase Improve, specifically repeating FBM. The whole album crushes. It's hard to believe it is almost 30 years old. Also, Soul Burn has a great groove to it.
Great video
Hey man, you should def watch the whole playthrough of the Clockworks snippet in this video. Also watch Meinl Cymbals - Matt Halpern - "Blood Eagle" by Periphery video on youtube if you have not already. That is a sick drummer aswell :)
This sounds like I plan to me!
This is such an interesting approach to creating and writing music...
Out of all the drummer TH-cam videos you are definitely far the best I love how you break it down brother
This means a ton to me! Thank you so much!
Yeah bro look up the full live versions of "future breed machine", "stengah" and "the mouth licking what you've bled". Gotta do the full tracks.
Ok bet! Sounds like a plan!
Dancers to a Discordant System is my favorite track from them, that one is worth a listen...
Sounds like a plan to me!
The face of stank strikes again!!!! Juicy fills get you every time! :)
Haha yep, it got me!
Perpetual Black Second is in my top 5 Meshuggah songs of all time.
Noted! And your TH-cam handle name is perfect
Cool video! we need more drummers who feel like we do that Meshuggah are just aliens!
That is really interesting! This is great information and thanks for the interesting recommendation as well
You must look yogev gabay, he is very a beast to understand messhuga, sorry for my bad English language my friend
He does sound interesting! Ill check him out! And you don't need to apologize, I can understand your English perfectly fine!
Great video. Happy to sub. For good drum analysis of Thomas check out Yogev Gabay. He does Mayshuggah!
Love how you explain his techniques and intelligence for a drummer.. Honestly.. neil peart of my gen!
Yes Neil Peart. I can agree there!
FUTURE BREED MACHINE!!!!!!!!!!
Sounds like a solid recommendation to me!
Stupid good! Rational Gaze shook my brain back in the day!
Ps. Do both bro! Reactions and covers!
Suggest Pravus or Dancers to a Discordant System. Also for a good blend of their best songs up to 2008, the Alive movie or album have fantastic sound quality and performance.
Oh this sounds interesting for sure!
Great content!
As far as any Meshuggah music to point you to. It's all amazing. Catch-33 is a good starting point if interested. Their new one Immutable is a nasty album to get through as well. Hope this helps!
It helps! Appreciate it!
Good to see you here! Ima check out Combustion for sure
Bro no need to apologise - hope you are well. New sub from Brisbane Australia
yeah, the buildup on 'Future Breed Machine' is NO JOKE... one of my FAVORITE sections in metal EVER. (also, 'Pravus' from Obzen...)
This song has been heavily voted on in the comments. Its sounding like a must for my next Meshuggah video
Definitely sounds like it will be one hell of an experience!
He drew his first drumming influence from Animal of The Muppetts..and as a little boy said hed hide in the pantry drumming on empty coffee cans..
The early stuff from none and destroy erase improve was my introduction to them
Yes, "Future Breed Machine" is absolutely a song you should listen to! "Stengah", too and "Combustion" is another all time favourite. I think "Inside what's within behind" also is quite interesting from a drumming perspective (well... as if any Meshuggah song was NOT interesting from a drumming perspective...)
Future breed machine has been highly requested. I HAVE to hear this!
Futur bread machin whit Meshuggah is the best for me sens i saw them live in my home town back in 1997
Im going to definitely do a video to that song. It has been highly recommended
