    Best technical description of how to think about drum motion mechanics I've ever encountered on TH-cam, or anywhere. Fantastic and engaging educational details.

    "And Thomas is good with his feet you say". You have no idea. This show was after he recovered (though only partially) from a herniated disk. In an interview he says that nowadays, even if he recovered full control of his right leg, it has a tendency to cramp and move a bit on its own. So imagine : the man has to have control on his rythm AND to be on the lookout for his leg not to cramp too much and move away from the pedal.
    So yeah, the man is good with his legs.

  • @PeturJH
    @PeturJH 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    great reaction! its a fact that drummers (even extremely skilled ones) pick each other apart. I believe it was Tool's 10000days tour where they had Meshuggah join, and the main reason was to see if they actually could play their stuff live. and Danny absolutely picked up some techniques, which you can hear on Fear Inoculum. that takes nothing away from Danny as a drummer, on the contrary. its one of the reasons he's my personal favourite. picking up techniques from different drummers as well as styles. both musical styles as well as cultural.
    at the same time Tomas is a massive fan of Morgan Ågren, and picks his brain a lot. so it all goes around. great recognises great.
    edit: should add as it seemed you might have missed it. the actual bass drum pattern in this changes constantly throughout. he keeps moving it around.

    The ability to basically play 3 songs at once one separate limbs, perfectly, live, without fail, is like....on a whole different level from almost every musician out there. I've played drums for 20 years and am very capable of playing double bass and polyrhythms, and I've barely made any progress learning this song. Just figuring out the bass drum pattern has been a part-time job on its own.

When the song starts, it’s a repeating pattern across 3 sixteenth notes, but once it cuts out and it’s just guitar, it’s a repeating pattern across 5 sixteenth notes. However, the breakdowns were really nice and delivered in a very understandable way! Great vid

    Your comment around 10:45 about how you would need to re learn how you play, is on point. Thomas is on record explaining he had to do that for this song. He mentioned, he switched it from just pummeling the double bass to re learn these hertas he is using here. Learning and playing this song, took him longer than the rest of the Obzen album, combined. Your takes are very insightful. Loved it, Subbing!!!

    There is no such thing as "the best". The craft of music varies on all levels. That's what makes music so fascinating - keeping it interesting and timeless. I really get livid when people throw around "this person is the best"... It just comes off to me that they have no idea nor true understanding of music and the philosophy/theory behind it. I truly do enjoy the masters of the craft however. Tomas Haake is without a doubt one of those people; a master of his craft. He's a Polyrhythm Time Wizard.
    My favorite guitar player is Chuck Schuldiner. His guitar playing/writing/composing to me is story telling and philosophy for the soul. He was a master of his craft also. His sound was very much him and unique. You hear his music - you met the guy without actually meeting him. It's a wonderful thing. His music to me will forever be timeless and will age like fine wine; it has and continues to do so. Just as a bonus mention.
    You should give Gus Drax and Mike Le Rossetti a look if you haven't yet.

  • @pointlesswasteoftime
    @pointlesswasteoftime 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Don't know if it's been mentioned, but Tomas had a spinal injury and surgery. That's the basis of the kit. Ergonomics. It's why the tom's are out to the side instead of angling beside and behind him. Cymbals are stacked in front. Everything is economy of movement and efficiency. He rarely twists, sits head on, back rest on the throne, and everything is within reach.
    I have significant difficulty playing drums and guitar now because of my own physical disabilities, so my stuff is arranged in a similar way. My hi hat is positioned where a small tom would be, cymbals lower etc...
    It's about fitting the kit to the player.
    Virgil Donati is a big advocate of ergonomics, setting things where they are in your range of motion and constantly changes the kit to fit.
    Ergonomics gets really important as you get older... You can muscle through younger, but older it gets to techniques and set-up.

    • @restojon1

    You should react to Luke Holland- tendinitis, his drum playthrough

    I guess you need three hi hats if you want to play either open or closed with your right hand, because usually the hats on the right are just mounted on a metal frame and you don't have a pedal to open or close them. So what I see here is he has his regular hi hat on his left, an open one on the center right and a tightly closed one on his far right. Never seen anything quite like this but it makes sense I guess

    Enjoyed your opening monologue. You gotta remember the amount of teenagers on here who have yet to realise that not everyone shares their opinions. Glad you called it out.

      As though no one older than nineteen would ever do that.

    Why 3 Hihats: He can't use his feet for the hihats as he uses them on the bass drums. So, one open on each side, then one permanently closed on the right for those tight hits/grooves.
    Also Thomas' pedals don't use chains or bands to activate, but a solid metal link: Trick Pro 1-V

    It is not just the bass player the entire band is the rhythm section.

    Sir! That is one of the best reactions to this video of Mr. Haake I've seen on youtube. Much respect, sir🤘I should mention that he uses triggers on Bleed. He is human after all.

    It took Thomas like 2 years to learn how to flip his rhythm for this song. Crazy

    Ya know, at about 5 minutes into this video I was really unsure what we were about to watch. Was it a drumcam? Would it be Thomas from Meshuggah, doing Bleed? Who could know, based on what was being said in the video? Good thing I took a look at the name of the clip, so I could know for sure.

    He has 3 because he doesn't play cross handed at all so to have the open hh sound and the closed hh sound requires 3 and his left hh he pumps with his foot only

    Why have three hihats? For convenience. I keep a second pair of closed hihat tucked under my ride for convenience. Closed only. My left foot is on my main hats. I’m hoping to find a good sounding small closed hat or stack for the middle between my toms

    HE has 3 hi hats because the double kicks are hard to play when youre doing a cross body when youre using the left hi hat and you still need to step on it to open and close it but on the right side he already has open and close hi hats ready

    He said when he was learning this song, he plays it completely opposite of how he plays everything else. Were everything else he leans into the pedals on this he has to lean backwards and barely hit the pedals with his feet. It's the reason the rest of the album took him 6 months to learn every song but this song took him another 6 months to learn by itself.

    Hello, Dig your stuff! I'm a drummer! I don't play much anymore! I put Thomas Haake with the top 10 of all time in my opinion! But I know BONZO !! could've done this technique with one foot on a single kick drum!!!

    You're right about the bassist. But apart from the lead parts both guitarists and also locking in on the kick parts for the whole track.

    African beat... put an edge to it.
    Just a thought... could they (bass and drum) be using a gate with the kick drum as a trigger?
