You stated the 10-14 4runner and fj 4.0 engine being bulletproof. However, the 10-15 Tacoma engine is susceptible to head gaskets and oil leaks. Aren’t these engines identical? I can’t imagine Toyota putting slightly different versions of these engines in essentially the same chassis during the same years. I appreciate your feedback and keep up the great work!

This video alone has probably made some people stop and rethink a purchase decision and saved them at lot of heartache. I have owned my RX450h (hybrid version of the RX350) for 5 years and has been very reliable. However, this year I experienced an issue that, it turns out, is quite common. The front suspension top mount bearing failed. Lexus dealer quoted c. £2,000 for the repair! Unlike other manufacturers, Lexus don't list the top mount as a spare part and, instead want to sell you the complete strut assembly!
Fortunately I found a local mechanic who will remove the leg, separate the top mount, then passes it to an engineering neighbour to remove and replace the bearing. They then reassemble the suspension. Total cost £270!
If you aren't local, the engineer offers a same day turnround postal service if you send him the top mount. Cost just £75.

I shopped a 2013 Venza limited vs 2014 RX350 and choose the Venza for the driving experience. The Venza has a European feel versus the RX where I felt the sway of a truck. The bluetooth works so well and auto connects/plays perfectly I don't even miss Apple CarPlay plus I can dock an iPod with 1 button access. The stereo sounds good, the pano roof is supper nice and easy to control with 2 separate covers (can keep the big back one open all the time). The V6 drivetrain of that era is just so smooth and powerful, on regular gas, it's a real joy!

I worked for a small gm dealer for 15 years. This is basically where I was introduced to "toyota" or the pontiac vibe. All of us techs dealing with GM's, horrendous problems always.. we would say hey "The pontiac vibes" only need brakes, oil changes, and basics. We never saw one engine, transmission, or drivetrain issue. After owning a jeep 😢 i said thats it. I'm buying a Tacoma. Here I am 12 years later, original drivetrain..I plow with it, pulled campers, off road. You name it. It's still such a great truck. Never skips a beat. I would say I'm definitely a car care nut about it.

The service manager of a rural dealership that sold almost every GM brand told me the warranty claims on the Vibe were 20% of the GM average. In my mind that makes it 5 times as good as a GM car built by GM. My Vibe has served me for 18 years with just 3 non-scheduled repairs. We also have a Tacoma in the family which was built in the same plant. I am still ticked off that GM and Toyota closed the joint venture factory that built our vehicles.

I'm one of those proud owners of a 2010 Prius. All recalls fixed. Inverter repaired under warranty at one point. NO other issues. Two previous owners. Perfect maintenance records and 5000 mile oil change intervals. Battery fan cleaned annually. 103K miles, 50K of which are mine. I will put a new HV battery in it when needed, and keep it, as it is paid for and runs flawlessly. I agree, though, that this and the 2011 are to be approached with caution. We also have a 2009 Prius with over 200,000 miles, running on original battery. Our other 2009 Prius was wrecked by a drunk in an F150, or it would have over 200K on it, also. Bought my daughter 2006 Corolla in 2020 with 30k, again showroon. Both of those were garage kept and are still going strong. 2017 RAV4, loved it but not big enough. 2020 Tacoma, worst Toyota ever, it was extremely uncomfortable to ride in, was not geared well, and was just all around unpleasant. Some thoughts on one of the worst: the 2010 Prius. I've had one for 10 years. It has 140,000 miles on it. It doesn't burn oil, the EGR system is fairly clean, and it still can get 50 MPG on summer gas. I've changed the oil every 5,000 miles (as per CarCareNut's recommendation). I keep the interior clean, so dust and dirt don't build up and clog the battery cooling fan. I think the most important thing I do, however, is to not use the car for short (< 10 minute) trips. I make sure that the engine warms up thoroughly, and usually have it out on the highway for any given trip. This helps to prevent the dreaded carbon build up in the EGR system. I also drive gently. The car is the antithesis of a race car, and thrives on slow acceleration and braking. Hope this helps those who have a gen 3 Prius.

    We really APPRECIATE your videos.
We've owned 4 different preowned models of the Prius, and we change the oil and a good quality filter religiously at 5k miles.
Our 2006 had severe oil consumption issues: 2 qts/1000 miles, and it clogged the catalytic converter...and in California the converter is extremely expensive, so we sold it.
Our 2011 also has oil consumption issues but is only about 1qt/1200 miles, and we recently had to replace the EGR valve, and we chose to replace the intake manifold as well. The dealer repair was $1640 for parts & labor. I understand that this car is at the higher end of oil consumption, but paying for the EGR repair was still much cheaper than buying a replacement vehicle, even though I do feel that the dealership severely overcharged us on parts.
UPDATE: AS I AM WRITING THIS, THE P0401 ENGINE CODE JUST CAME BACK IN!
Our 2015 plugin model and 2016 model have had no issues at all.
UPDATE: A few weeks after spending $1640 at the Toyota dealer to replace the EGR valve, intake manifold, and pcv valve, our 2011 Prius was totaled in an accident.

I clean the EGR system, the transmission fluid, etc. and by doing all that basic (or some not so basic) stuff, it still runs as well as the day I bought it. Always very informative as usual. Live in the rust belt, literally 3 blocks due NE of your shop & here has been my Toyota/Lexus experience.
Had an 07 ES350, did the routine maintenance, kept it clean & never had issues. Only saw the dealer for recalls, otherwise everything was performed in my garage. Kept it for 12 years.
Presently have a 17 RX350 & 18 GS350; to date both are performing similar to ES. Have been performing the maintenance, keep them clean (top & bottom) & thanks to your videos, look out for many pointed out items.
Most definitely concur with early Rav4 issues. Owned a 06 & never had one with so many factory recalls & mechanical failures. Had the V6 model & taking care of it didn't matter; had an early water pump bearing failure, muffler rusted through at the top in 4 yrs (integral w/ the cat convertor & covered by the exhaust warranty), rear diff coupler failed (just before the special diff warranty expired), had a rear coil spring break, and many more I can't remember.

As a tech one more thing i noted about the 2016 Tacoma, they go through lower control arms and rear shock absorbers like crazy. It might be because we have bad roads in Canada but they tend to need replacement at just 70,000 kms (43k miles).

I am curious if there is any 'extra' preventive maintenance you would suggest to keep the 2016 going if I haven't experienced any issues so far (100k miles)

Hi Amd, are you able to do a video on how to tell what the state is of a hybrid battery, whether it’s nearing the end of its useable service life. Especially when you looking to buy a used one. I would imagine owners will notice as the battery ages it wouldn’t propel the car as much, and as a result the engine runs more. Could the scan tool tell you information on how much the battery is propelling the car to gauge what the condition of the battery is and thus have an ideal how much service life is left. This is a topic and I’m sure many would too see a video on.

The 4th Gen Lexus ES’s (2002-2006) are bulletproof if properly maintained! As I’ve commented on this channel a few times, My 2002 Lexus ES300 maybe “boring” to most people but at 176k miles it’s as reliable anything on the road today. I replaced 20 year old OEM parts (starter, alternator and struts) and now it rides like new. It will last me another 176k miles with proper maintenance !!

I love the camrys from those years ( I have an 02) and I've heard the es330 are even more spectacular. I'll be looking to purchase one within the year. Any weaknesses to look out for besides age related concerns?

@@jakesmith-ho4bl mine is a ES300. I got lucky and found a one owner with all maintenance records on Lexus owners website. All service was done at a local Lexus dealership thru 110k miles. Timing belt and valve cover gasket were replaced at 88k miles. Bought it 2 years ago w 160k miles.
They are bulletproof. I think valve cover gasket issues are the only thing I’m aware of. Thank god mine was replaced and I’ll be doing it again when I do the timing belt again soon.
Major difference between the Camrys and ES’s are the sound insulation and quality of materials. My Lexus is super quiet. California walnut trim interior trim and beautiful leather makes it that more special.
If you’re looking for just a commuter, go with the Camry, but if you want something, elegant and luxurious quiet, go with the Lexus.

    ❤My 2015 Lexus RX450h hybrid @ 67,000 miles:
Other than routine maintenance, which some may state the below also are, the only 2 items that I have needed to replace prematurely:
    1: Hood Struts,
stopped holding the hood up in cold weather
    2: 12v. AGM Battery,
just replaced it, a $680 repair. Only Lexus offers this custom sized 12v battery so they can charge a ridiculous price.

      My 2009 rx450h has over 160000 miles or 280000km
It's one of the early third generation models. Mine was built in Japan. I own it since 2019 after the original owner. The list of fixes isn't too long. Rear shocks, front subframe bushings, water pump, tires, hood and trunk struts (it doesn't have power tailgate), 12 volt battery, headlight bulbs and finally hv battery recondition but only because they weren't able to find a replacement in reasonable time.
