      I worked for Honda 10 years ago as a technician. Does the Hybrid Highlander have special tires on it. Low resistant rowing tires. I remember the Honda's had a different style tire that did not last very long but it would kill your fuel economy if you did not use them.

      Hi Mathew. The highlander hybrid has normal tires. Some of them will have low rolling resistance tires but not all trims. The Prius will almost always have low rolling resistance tires.

      This might be heresy but in the 12.5 years and 350,000 miles I owned my 2008 Prius (bought new) I didn’t always use low rolling resistance tires lol. Same HV battery and I didn’t want to replace the head gasket which is why I’m still not driving it. Got a 2020 Corolla Hatchback

      Update. I've made a trip with the car. To the location I averaged 67 miles a gallon. The way back I averaged ninety two miles a gallon. I averaged 80.6 miles a gallon for the trip.
      With my distance driving this is why I needed the car. I went that far on just three gallons of gas. With my Silverado (which I still need for hauling) I can't do that without using over twenty gallons of gas.

    I like to buy my cars new and drive them 'till they die. I've bought a Volkswagen and 2 Citroens prior to my current Toyota and all of them were fit for the scrap heap by the time they were 10 years old. I bought my Toyota Auris hybrid new early in 2011, so it's about 9 and a half years old now and it still feels quite new. Apart from regular servicing, the only expenses I have had (that I can remember) are a new set of tyres, windscreen wiper blades, a new 12v battery and the air-con regassing. I've never had a car before that's been so cheap to run and maintain. I'm hoping to buy a new car next year and plan to give my Auris to my daughter because it feels like it has many years of life left. I love the quietness of the drive and the fact that I never have to worry about it stalling or failing to start in cold weather.

      Yes, you should if you drive more than 15k miles a year. The difference is huge if you are in city traffic. It has very low maintenance, much lower than diesel in 20y. Engine components and rubber hoses also last much longer in hybrid, the engine runs cooler. My 06 prius at 230k miles valve cover gasket was still really good when I replace it. The fact is that a hybrid is the worst of both worlds because you have 2 separate drive systems in one car, essentially doubling the number of systems that can fail. You have the very limited range of the electric motor (due to the small battery) AND all the maintenance requirements of any other internal combustion engine car. If you are happy with yours, then you have not yet driven an all electric to see how much better they actually are.

    These past few weeks I've been driving a Prius and I have found everything you and Kilmer have had to say about hybrids to be the truth--backed up by the experiences of friends and family driving Leafs and Priuses.
    The take-aways include routine maintenance, like oil changes had proper intervals. And that air filter, yes! It should be cleaned and or replaced on whatever schedule is called for by the manufacturer.)

    • @WhoWouldWantThisName
      @WhoWouldWantThisName 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yes, and even though it appears by the titles and thumbnails of Kilmer's videos that he is down on hybrids, he actually does say that he just prefers traditional cars, but he agrees that the Toyota hybrids are the best and I presume that extends to Lexus, as we all know how much he loves Lexus. It's just so easy for him to maintain and repair traditional vehicles that it's hard for him to justify buying a car he needs to take to someone else for work, and I completely understand that. In fact I recently re-watched an old one of his where he said that he recommends avoiding old used ones, but not necessarily buying new, or a well maintained and newer used one. Which it sounds like is consistent with this video.

I have done 400kms and I am already using only around 5.7 litres per 100 kms which is already better than official consumption figures. I am so impressed I can’t tell you. I thought it is $$ saver but in borrow time until battery replacement do happens. I do feel blessed from that cost saving opportunity. I am tempted to sell it just cuz the value of my Prius is $3.5-5k and the cost of the battery replacement is equal to that.

      We are retired and drive under 5,000 miles per year. Still bought the new Toyota Venza Hybrid. It’s a nice experience. I was disappointed to find that my state, most states, charge extra registration fees for hybrids and EVs. They encourage the green effect, and then charge higher yearly fees to make up for the money they lose in gas taxes. Low mileage drivers get hurt. However, the joy of getting between 40 and 50 mpg, does ease the pain.

    For anyone contemplating buying aToyota hybrid but are unsure of the drive system, don’t worry. I’m on my fifth Toyota hybrid (2 Auris, 1 RAV4, 2 CHR) all have been faultless and a pleasure to own and drive. The drivetrain is very efficient and all you need to do is slightly adapt your driving style to suit the characteristics of the gearbox and you’ll be amazed at the performance levels and refinement of these cars. Don’t take any notice of vehicle reviews that claim the gearbox is noisy. That is basically a lie and just serves to prove how biased the majority of these reviewers are. You will only hear the ‘engine’ under heavy acceleration which is the same for any car but they fail to point this fact out, why I have no idea. As I’ve already said if you take the time to adjust your driving style slightly you will rarely hear anything at all apart from wind or road noise and those are pretty well damped anyway. The latest Toyotas are as economical as ever but now they have excellent performance and handling, especially the 2.0 & 2.5 litre versions of the Corolla, RAV4 and CHR. I currently own the 2.0 CHR hybrid and it’s fantastic, swift, silent and very comfortable. Build quality has improved despite previous versions already being very good anyway. I don’t have anything bad to say about these cars they’re an excellent choice if you value economy, reliability allied to very decent performance and the latest designs are have lifted them away from the frumpy designs of yesteryear. I personally don’t care for the off the wall looks of the Prius range but that’s just me. Just take a test drive Toyota Hybrids are brilliant.

    You have my eternal gratitude! I had not even heard of the hybrid fan filter until you mentioned it in a previous video, and when I looked at the one in our 2014 Prius (that had carried or German Shepard many times) it was about 80% blocked with dog hair. I was able to clean it out with a wooden skewer and a vacuum cleaner, saving me a bit of work. I just picked the hair loose and it was sucked right up. Soon I will pull the fan out and make sure it is clean.
    Why did we buy one? Our first one (2002) was for fuel efficiency, but we stuck with them for the reliability. We had never known a car that was so reliable, and we have had a succession of Prius cars ever since, all of them used. Our 2010 gave us good service until it seemed to become magnetized, attracting a truck, a deer, and an SUV that bashed in the sides within six months. We now have a 2014 Package V Prius and we couldn't be happier.
    I 200% agree with staying away from the first gen Prius unless you are an enthusiast. You didn't even mention the Triangle Of Death problem on the first cool day of Fall with 2001s and early 2002s, or the flaky throttle position sensor that can cause it to go to idle when driving along, or the early steering racks that could shake in reverse. Staying with 2010 and later saves a lot of headaches.

One that comes from the factory that’s behind the vent and another one that you can add that clips onto the outside. I would get the one that clips on the outside for ease of cleaning

They are a little slow out of the gate and you don't want to pull out in front of someone and think you're going to zoom off, but they get amazing mileage. Getting used to the regeneration and braking was seemingly instinctive. Both cars sat a lot during covid while we teleworked; probably the battery life was shortened due to that. Having this experience, and gaining more from this video - I would consider a Rav4 or Highander. I have a gas Highlander now but would really dig much better mileage in this comfy and roomy vehicle. I think they Hybrid is a good solution while we wait for improved battery life technology to develop in EV's.

    I traded my daily BMW 550i for a corolla hybrid and love it! super quiet and smooth transmission and ride,easily gets 60mpg and 600 miles of range, and one big advantage of hybrid/EV is you can run the AC while parked and not run the engine. I also have the open pilot self driving installed, it’s the best thing you can get for heavy traffic.the car is also not as slow as I thought,yes it is really slow 0-60 but in city driving it has pretty quick kick down since it does not need to down shift. Anyway love this car

      I've got a 2018 Prius 4 with the Comma AI open pilot.....I run that almost all the time....averaging about 64 MPG all the time. Insane mileage...comfortable.....and quiet.....I had a 2015 and it was noisy but also got great mileage....but the open pilot on the 2018 makes a huge difference.

      Steve smith agree, open pilot is truly amazing especially in traffic and it surprises all my friends , and I was able to get 65 mpg back in July when it was really hot but it drops down to about 60 since I need to use the heater more often

    • @evanleo7633
      @evanleo7633 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Steve smith I think the AC does not affect your MPG by a lot in hybrid cars but heater does since it requires the engine running which is the opposite of gas vehicle

    • @chuckhursch5374
      @chuckhursch5374 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can run the AC and heater w/o engine running, but both do run off the HV pack, so the gas engine will have to turn on more often to charge up the pack. My mpg goes from the 50s down to the 40s when the AC is running a lot. Also when it’s hot outside, the radiator fans come on more often, thus more parasitic losses.

    To confirm your notion about hybrid car reliability, I drive 15 years NiMeH Ford Escape Hybrid SUV with 110,000 miles on it and of course the battery easy now discharge overnight regardless hot or cold, but also recharge fast and keep the charge always for daily driving.
    It’s known fact that this hybrid as NY & SF taxi and as NYPD vehicle is a 24/7 heavy used vehicle reached regularly 300,000 miles. With this reputation in mind and that needs mainly regular maintenance only like oil and filter I have decided to buy it as a single owner used with 50,000+ miles and now as a 2nd owner owned keep driving this hybrid SUV successfully additionally 60K miles without any electrical problem. Factory recommended battery cabin filter changed every time when factory scheduled regular maintenance is due, except oil and oil filter, that it’s.
    Sure enough hybrids are better choice than fully electrical or plug-in vehicle now and for years to come. Glad that Toyota keep supporting the hybrid market vs. the fully electrical. Are other major automotive manufacturers will follow with Toyota hybrid lead? And it’s also known fact that hybrid vehicles wear their mechanical portion of the car less, my dealership confirmed they are seeng coming for repairs this Ford Escape Hybrid SUV less than other not reliable Ford vehicles. And battery replacement using independent third party cost $2,500-3,000, not this exuberant many thousands of dollars new car dealerships are still charging unreasonably!

      Since I received a $40,000 inheritance, I'm researching my first car ever (turning 25 in 5 weeks). 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross, or Corolla LE AWD? ICE or hybrid? Is it true Toyota Hybrids should be driven very often to prevent the battery from ever degrading? Apparently, it's not one of those cars you can just leave parked for weeks; for instance, when you go on vacation.

    • @yulia7191
      @yulia7191 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ladye2818 It has been a while since I now bought my new car, and I completely forget what the conclusion was on this after I finished doing research lol, or just how often that "should be driven every now and then" is. It's possible it's long enough where it's not an issue. I would say to try to do some more research on the subject online. The car I bought was a Toyota Rav4 gas version, but looking back, I feel like maybe a hybrid would have been better, because the MSRP was only about 1k more and I thought I heard the acceleration is a little faster at slow speeds. But who knows, with the MSRP hikes last year, maybe it would have been more expensive than 1k or harder to find in the color I wanted. (I wanted to try out the Hybrid Corolla Cross, because the regular felt slow to accelerate when I test drove it and I heard the hybrid had better torque, but it wasn't available yet.) Definitely test drive the car before buying it to make sure you like it. Try to get on the highway too during the test drive if you are comfortable driving on highways. And you can call multiple places and ask if they have the car available and if they sell at MSRP or if not how much their "market adjustment" is. That way, you have less of a chance of getting scammed by one dealership, because you know the trends. Don't disclose that you're paying in cash until you've worked out a price (just say you're not sure how much your down payment will be and how much of it you'll finance), and don't say say you have a trade-in until that point either.

However cab drivers are professional drivers and they really take care of their cars.
