    Awesome video! I was planning on doing this service on our Pacifica this weekend and watching your step by step was so very helpful in preparing me for the job. I went with Mopar fluid which you can get at a fairly reasonable price online if you shop around. I really like your method of measuring how much comes out and replacing with the same. Easier than messing around with the dipstick thing 🙂Thanks again!!!

      @@TheLawnEngineer I drained out and replaced 3 quarts plus 21 ounces, so just a bit over 3 and a half quarts. This is my first time on this vehicle, 34,000 miles. I think I’ll do this every 35,000 miles or so. Very worthwhile to freshen up the fluid and give the transmission the best chance for a long life. I pulled the air box instead of the battery, and access was good. Thanks again for your video!!

    Well done, I have the '18 Pacifica Gas also and just did the same thing 6 months ago. Instead of filling through the top take the driver wheel off do everything from there down low instead you never even have to raise the hood start to finish. Yes 3-1/2 quarts is full but Leave belly pan permanently off, helps cool engine and so you can see any trans leaks. If you have leaks it might take more that 3-1/2.. Go online for dipstick measurement tool for proper length..
    The 948TE is a 10-11 quart system, 1 drain and fill wont get it all out. Do 6 drain and fills driving 10 miles between each one and that leaves you with 90% new fluid. The oil filter is internal and cannot be changed unless you split the case so forget about that. I only use the Mopar Green for this particular 8-9 speed only as thats all you should specifically use but your choice...👍.

    Not just a car jack, always support it additionally. So many people have deid because they didn't pay attention to this! 2 people in my area alone. Otherwise, markings are a good idea for determining the old and new amounts of fluid. I always like to use the scales for this (my wife isn't so keen on this because it's our kitchen scales...). You can then fill the car directly from the clean oil canister and only have to weigh the canister a few times in between. If you do this with a scale, note that liters are not the same as weight in kg (not like water!) because the transmission oil is much lighter (requires special ATF6, which weighs around 0.83 to 0.86 kg/liter depending on the type). So i always control Level before change, than i weigh the old oil and then the new one, similar to the method here with the markings.
    In addition, to hold enough oil pressure, it is technically better if the filter is changed at the same time (at least every other change / or with the ZF every 100 to 120tm is enough - with moderate use without a trailer). Unfortunately, this is a bit of work with this ZF gearbox, but it is necessary. The oil level should always be checked afterwards.
    otherwise good video, thanks, regards from Germany, Raphael

    You can make a dipstick from a large zip tie. There are TH-cam videos that show how to do this. Just be careful not to drop it into the trans. I used to measure the old fluid drained out at the Honda dealer and just put the same amount back in. Also when I worked at the Chrysler dealer, I replaced a 9 speed just about every week when they first came out. After the first 10 or so I realized that every one had to have 1 quart drained from the new trans to get it to the correct level. After that, that’s all I did was drain 1 quart from each one and called it good. Flat rate means you’re always looking for ways to do the job faster without sacrificing quality. With the 9 speeds, a little bit over or under filled won’t hurt it.

    @DadDog0305 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the video. I'm concerned about the notion that you can simply replace only the amount of transmission fluid that you drained and believe it is at the correct level. It might very well not be. Isn't there a specific procedure required to check for the proper fluid level in the transmission that must be followed for these ZF transmissions? Also, does the Pacifica have a transmission cooler, perhaps near the radiator, that holds a certain amount of fluid? If so, is there a bypass valve that prevents the transmission fluid from cycling through the cooler until it has reached a certain temperature? My understanding is the transmission fluid must be checked when its temperature is within a certain range, and after it has been driven enough for it to be cycled through the cooler, if there is one. Apologies if it turns out I am full of dog doo about this.

    • @TheLawnEngineer
      @TheLawnEngineer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You are correct, there is a "tool" that is basically a dip still with several level lines on it. There is a table and procedure that is used to know what level line to use based on the fluid temperature to account for thermal expansion of the fluid.
      The procedure I used is valid if the level before drain is correct (factory fill was perfect and nothing has leaked). I believe I made a point of looking for leaks. I'm confident that I can use this procedure 5-10 times and be within a couple millimeters of the factory fill.

    • @TheLawnEngineer
      @TheLawnEngineer  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Overall I really like the van, but the programming of the transmission really tempered the experience.
      The PHeV has a completely different transmission so it is likely smoother. However, I have heard the failure rate of transmissions is much higher. It's a CVT with an electric motor incorporated, they may have the bugs worked out by now, but the early ones were not great.
      As you may have seen, I have switched over to two Teslas and couldn't be happier. The drivetrain is so simple, after 25k and 12k miles I haven't noticed a single hiccup or stutter from the drivetrain. I know this doesn't help with a minivan, but I have to share whenever I"m even tangentially asked.

    Hey my transmission housing cracked, because in Chrysler's infinite wisdom they made the pan out of plastic. I guess something hit it and cracked it...some of my fluid leaked out that way...Would you recommend using a vaccum pump to drain the remainder and add the specified stock amount or just use your method to drain the rest and maybe you can tell me how much you actually put back so I can approximately get it right and then drive to the dealer to actually check the actual level...

    • @TheLawnEngineer
      @TheLawnEngineer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh man, that stinks. Unfortunately, I didn't measure exactly how much but it was roughly 3.3 quarts.
      I don't think a vacuum pump will work well on this transmission because there isn't a good place to snake the vacuum line down into the sump.
      How far away is the dealer? If its only a couple blocks, you could drain the transmission completely and add 3.3 quarts...if it's further than that I would probably get a flat bed and have it towed.

      Unfortunately the filter is not accessible. The oil does stay clear, the clutch’s in this transmission don’t seem to shed much friction material (what usually changes the color of the fluid). The fluid is still subject to viscosity breakdown even if it is clear.

    Very thorough explanation for this job. I would like to ask, and if you could be so kind and answer it would be helpful as well. Is this the ZF 9HP48 tranny? And if so, is that LEVER over the fill hole, the electronic Park release lever, or the general gear shift lever? From what I see, on this tranny the shift cable attaches to that LEVER. So I am thinking, are there two or three types of these trannys? Bcuz I was looking at another video where the ZF 9HP48 is outside the vehicle and the parts and functions are described. However, that particular LEVER was facing the opposite direction and had No linkage attached to it, and it was said to be the Electronic Park Lever. I'm somewhat perplexed. I understand this type tranny is used in various vehicles, like the Odyssey and Sienna but, aren't they supposed to be or look the same? Can you elaborate? Thx.

      That is a very difficult and contentious subject (probably why you are asking 🤓)
      I recommend before 60,000 miles and the every 20k to 30k. Obviously this is my opinion, you should get multiple and decide what you want to do.
      If you wait too long, many abrasives have already built up in the fluid and is wearing out the clutches. The dirty fluid wears the clutches but provides additional friction and prevents the clutches from slipping.
      If you wait too long the clutches are worn out and clean fluid will actually cause the transmission to start slipping.

      @TheLawnEngineer  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is an amazing video, thanks for sharing.
      I did a drain and fill at ~35k, ~60k, and 80k. The issue with changing the fluid on a high mileage transmission for the first time is that you are removing all of the friction material that has worn off the clutch pack. The dirty fluid has accelerated wear but also prevents the clutch(s) from slipping. If you put in all new fluid the clutch(s) can start slipping.
      Unfortunately, the fluid change doesn't seem to do anything for the clunky shifts, but the resets do help.

    • @TheLawnEngineer
      @TheLawnEngineer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We can have an intelligent discussion about the pros/cons of all the different types of transmission maintenance. I chose to do this for three main reasons:
      1: Reduce contamination in trans fluid: The heavies (metal) will settle at the bottom of the transmission and most will flow out when draining. The remaining contaminants will be diluted with the new fluid.
      2: Viscosity breakdown: Trans fluid (oil) viscosity breaks down over time because the oil molecules sustain damage and start to break apart. Putting in 30% new fluid restores 30% of the molecules to perfect condition, mixing with old fluid does not affect this.
      3: Transmissions with some miles on them do not like 100% new fluid. The clutch packs wear over time and the clutch material gets suspended in the trans. fluid. This suspended clutch material alters the friction properties of the fluid. 100% new fluid will often lead to clutch packs slipping and cause a previously happy trans to act up.
      I never recommend a transmission flush, as this can force contaminants into small passages and it has the issues with 100% new fluid. A flush hurts way more transmissions that it helps.

    No, no, no. Do not do what this guy says. He is doing the entire procedure incorrectly.

      I agree that this isn’t the OEM procedure and as I point out in the video it relies on the transmission being at the correct level prior to the service. The good news is that transmissions are closed systems and don’t lose fluid unless it’s leaking.
      We can have an intelligent debate on the pros and cons of each procedure. I think this is a very low risk alternative but everyone is free to do as they wish.

      Tom, please elaborate on the "correct" way for a shade tree mechanic to service this transmission aside from getting bent over by the stealership. Its better than just letting it go until it's worn out.

    Your video contains some misinformation. The 948TE does use Mopar (68218925AB) but not all Pacifica's were sold with this transmission. My 2018 pacifica has the ZF 9HP48 and requires fluid specification of ZF AA01.500.001. (THEY WONT EVEN SELL ME 68218925AB FOR MY VEHICLE) I contacted Chrysler for clarification and some were sold with an import ZF transmission and some were sold with the 948TE which is produced in Kokomo FCA USA Transmission facility and are a licensed design and are manufactured by stellantis on behalf of FCA (Fiat Chrysler America) and is a modified version of the ZF design and uses different materials and has a different fluid because of chemical compatibility with seals and frictions and design was modified for streamlined production using existing tooling and parts available in the USA. The ZF transmission being the ZF 9HP48 is an imported transmission manufactured in germany by ZF Friedrichshafen AG and uses ZF Lifeguard 9 (AA01.500.001) fluid specification. I strongly encourage ANYONE WATCHING THIS VIDEO to call the dealership with your VIN number to verify which transmission fluid your vehicle takes ESP. considering most Pacifica's have a recall on the transmission that extends the warranty to 10 years/ Unlimited miles and using the wrong fluid WILL VOID WARRANTY.

      Thanks for helping people out.
      The good news is that the AMSOil is good for both transmissions.
      Also, the extended warranty/recall is ok but only kicks in with catastrophic failure…have not heard of anyone collecting on that. There are plenty’s of frustrated owners with herky jerky transmissions.

    How many quarts did you add after you did your change? Did you drain out about 3.5 quarts ?
