Of course, young drivers never have serious accidents. If they do it's probably because they are overtaking older drivers who are driving slower and carefully.
I know a many competition car drivers that are over 75 years of age. I was watching Tiff Needell (71) at Goodwood this year competing successfully against many younger competitors. Stirling Moss still drove extremely well until his death at 90years old. Whether you are fit to drive cannot be simply age related, its about competence on the road. We should have periodic testing to prove that competence IMO at 5 years after passing the test and then every 10 years until 70 when it should revert to every 5 years. Perhaps then we will improve the low standard of driving and take out those that are not competent to drive.
Paul Britton I'm 80 in April next year and I challenge you to a driving test when I visit the UK next year from Vietnam. I've held a driving license since 1962, I took the Advanced Drivers Course with a police driving instructor. Have driven cars, vans, trucks, mobile cranes in the UK, Europe, Egypt Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and many more Asian countries. With many of those countries giving me their countries license on sight of a current UK one. Last year I renewed my Vietnamese license and the lady behind the counter jokingly said she would like to see me driving. After my license was issued she did come out for a ride, firstly she was amazed how well I coped with Ho Chi Minh traffic and how I positioned our car to turn right across the motorcycle lane so easily. She shook her head when I did a running commentary of what was ahead and behind, a lot of which she hadn't even noticed. Yes of course there are a lot of people who should not be driving, try looking at the daily school run parents dropping off the kids at school. Just look at a factory gates during quitting time. But don't just ban the elder sector of the motoring public, without the making all the others get any better. I visit the UK every two or three years and the driving gets worse each time. Are all the drivers OAP's NO.
These stats cannot be true. If it were, then motor insurance companies would be charging the over 75’s much more money than the 18 to 20 year olds. As insurance companies do not do that, it tells me that the 18 to 20 year olds are the age group that cause, or are involved in, more accidents than any other age group. This man is an idealist without exception nor heart nor sympathy.
The insurance stats are a true vindication of which sectors of the driving public are safer. I am 71 and have recently added my daughter (30yo with 13 years fault free driving experience) to our car insurance policy and the cost rose by 60%. that goes to show who the insurers think is a higher risk.
Perhaps you missed the reason this segment aired in the first place. The DfT released this data 7 days ago. It is irrefutable evidence that your risk of dying as a driver triples over the age of 75.

I recently spent a whole day driving with a class one police driver so I could tell what my skill level was. He thought my driving was excellent. I'm 76 years of age.
Drivers aged 16-20 are the most likely to be involved in a car crash, while drivers aged 65 and up are the least likely. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that older drivers (aged 65+) are the safest drivers, because it doesn't account for the number of miles traveled and other age-related factors. Drivers in the 25-34 age group are most likely to be involved in fatal crashes.
