A quick tutorial on how to prepare and prime your skin prior to makeup application. (approval switch is on, so don't panic if you dont see your comment post right away)
hey truly - its a matter of preference. Sometimes I like doing eyes first so that the skin have more time really absorbing the moisturizer/spf i applied earlier. Then the foundation cleans all the fallouts from the eye makeup. Sometimes, I also start with foundation first, specially to see if it will oxidize on my clients skin. Then I do the eyes, and by the time I finish the eyes, I look at the foundation to see if it became darker or ashy - this way I can make adjustment.
What I love in your tutorials is that you give A LOT of advices on makeup but also on the "basics" (how to apply moisturizer etc... I didn't even know the proper way to apply it before I saw you explain it!). I really want to thank you for sharing your knowledge and passion for makeup with us! =D
Thanks Koren! I've spent 2 days looking at all your videos sometimes twice. I think I have gone from a complete novice to someone who has a really good foundation knowledge in makeup techniques and the MAC products. Keep up the hard work. xx
hey Onass777 - if your moisturizer does not have SPF, you can mix your sunscreen with the moisturizer and apply them both. And yes BEFORE priming, your skin needs to absorb the SPF well, so at least 15 mins before primer.
hey Snowfilly - you can definitely apply some concealer on the shadow area. Best to is to this stepping back from the mirror so that you can place the concealer where the shadows are. Smooth and blend. Puffy Eyes - chilled cucumber slices for 15 mins! and or eye cream with cucumber extracts.
hey Heather - yes I use Oil Control for my uber oily clients, and it does work in controlling oils. P&P is definitely ideal for oily skin as it mattefy the skin a little prior to foundation application.
I like the P&P regular as it dries to a matte powder-like finish. Ive heard a lot of people are sensitive to the SPF in the NEW one, so you will have to consider that as well.
YES! much like your mascara, replace PP lash regularly. You can use any moisturizer for combo skin, the trick is, really moisturize the dry areas first, then just lightly do your t-zone.
Great Question KARA! Most foundation and other makeup products contains metals such as Mica and Silica. These are really drying to your skin. The moisturizers also act as binder to your makeup so that it doesnt fade or dry and slide off.
hey Kara - priming it will give you smooth finish and makes the colors true to its hue. If you have larger pores specially in the nose area, it will fill them in without clogging, so that they dont get aplified once you apply your foundation.
hey anshila - yes one of the benefits on using a primer is that it fill in pores and fine lines without clogging. So when you apply the foundation, it goes on smoothly and diminishes the look of large pores and fine lines.
hey Lanie - it works just like MAC Prep & Prime, but its just a bit more ideal for photography. Much like P&P, it makes the foundation apply on smoother and makes foundation flawless looking.
hey Lanie - yeah Pro Store on Union ST in SF is your closes Pro Store. And a regular MAC store closest to you would be either MAC Concord or MAC Santa Clara-Valley Fair.
hey pattasy - yes, I always prime my face before makeup when I go on stage and it really helps. For geisha white - you can either check out MAC Chromacake or Paint Stick in white. Skinfinishes, well youre doing exactly what its designed for, on your cheeks a little on forehead if you prefer. But most just use it as is on cheeks like a blush or on top of blushes for that extra shimmer.
hey angie - a lot of people wear it daily. Its a preference, I guess. Its got skincare ingredients that helps the skin in more ways than one. Some even have SPF. Specially for simple makeup, you'll find that priming first helps as you dont need to pack on more foundation and such.
hey love - primers basically makes the foundation looks smooth and even. If you like that look, go try it. If you're happy with your foundation, no need to. Ideal for large pores as it fills them in so that its not amplified when you put the foundation.
hey xoxonncy - glad you liked Photo Finish. You can definitely look into Cliniques moisturizers, or if you're looking for something inexpensive, Eucerin have great moisturizers that are inexpensive and you can find in most drugstores. Tinted Moisturizer is great if you dont need any coverage, but just even out you skin tone.
hey Carla - I use Prep & Prime original for years and so far, I do notice a major difference in the finish of foundations, and most others also uses notcing great difference. Depending also on how you apply your foundation and the brush you use, you can achieve a great finish by priming first.
hey amdman - yes it will coat the pores so that the foundation will glide on smoothly. It help the T-zone specially if its oily. It gives it a matte finish.
hey fabel - definitely check out Smashbox Photo Finish primer in clear. Its great for summer time specially if youre active and sweating. Blot powder is great too!
hey Angie -1) Its best to use SPF along with moisturizer PRIOR to any makeup products so that the skin really absorbs it. Its best to use a moisturizer with SPF in one. 2) P&P with SPF has a greasy feel to it, I like the original better.
hey rosie - it does sound logical! however, I find it best to use concealer first, then, foundation. So that way, the foundation evens out the skin including the concealed areas.
i use strobe cream to turn any of my liquid foundations to a more Dewey finish. The product is very drying to the skin because of its high metal content, so make sure to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize prior to application
You will love it Stephie! Im getting more color from my lipliners and lipsticks now. It's definitely a must have. I hope MAC makes it available on their regular line. I used Studio Moisture Creme in this vid. I like Studio Moisture FIX cuz of the time-release formula.
key Kila - definitely alongside the moisturizer - you want to use regular moisturizer on the dry areas, and just the oil control lotion on the oily areas. Give it about 15 mins so that the skin really absorb the products, then apply makeup.
hey Doorista - yeah its kinds feels emolient at first, then it should feel powdery, and once you apply the foundation it shouldnt feel anything. SMASHBOX - Definitely try the Photo Finish in Clear. Oil Control doesnt have time release, just Studio Moisture Fix.
Exfoliate toget rid of dry skin, and FIX Fluid is very drying to skin! SO, a good moisturizer prior to it will definitely help. A little concealer on spots, and I have an Eyebrow vid in my video list.
tinted moisturizer is the worse to use in hot and humid weather. I advise to look into Stick Foundation as those are the most heat and humidity friendly.
hey unique - sounds like you will need to use some Oil Control Lotion. It has moisturizing capabilities and the same time controlling the oils your skin naturally produce. Also, using a primer with matte down your skin and seal in some of the oils. You apply this after your foundation. Then Blot powder to set your founsation so that it absorbs and excess oils for that final matte finish.
hey Cris - congrats on your first musical. Yeah, you're on the right track. In theater makeup everything is applied on dramatically as the lighting is harsh on stage. Light application will wash out. What is the character?
hey msmel - if sunblock is SPF is already built in on either your moisturizer or foundation, then no need to worry. If not, you apply sunblock WITH the moisturizer, 15 mins before any makeup - so that the skin gets a chance to absorb it.
Very useful tips Koren. I didn't know that I needed to massage my moisterizer into the skin prior to doing my make up. It makes a lot of sense! Thank you for showing us:)
the new Photo Finish Primer Light, is designed specifically for Oily Skin, acne proned, and sensitive skin. otherwise, it works the same as original. So definitely look into that.
Thank you soooooo much Koren,I can't believe you replied my msg personally. I think I'm gonna go get the primer tomorrow, and hopefully my foundation will stay fresh all day.
tinted moisturizer is the sheerest of all, its really just what it is - a moisturizer with a little tint to it. If you want coverage you want foundation.
hey Mexa - the palettes are avialble at any free-standing MAC stores. The eyeshadow pans are magnetic and easily replaceable or changed. Simply flick it out of the palette.
when waiting for it to set, its the best time to go over the foundations and swatch to match the clients skintone. This can also involve mixing foundations to really match sometimes. So by the time Im ready the apply, the primer is all set.
omg! you are so right about the patchy-ness! now I understand :) I actually ended up thinking that it doesn't work, not knowing that there is a better way to apply it! thank you so much Koren!
yeah that will be redundant - Matte skin finisher is great for t-zones where you shine the most. And its really mattefying, so if you want flat matte, then its great.
hey serket! sure. i fyou're just blushing, then just apply the primer in the cheekbones where you would put the blush. You dont need the whole face if you're not using foundation.
I learnt alot! Thank you so much! And thanks for havng no music in the background... coz that makes listening so much easier for non-native speakers. Great how-to do!
Not when Prep & Priming - i recommend using a toner for a Night Time regimen tho, when you remove makeup and cleanse the face. Fix+ also has a built in toner, and its great for sensitive skin.
haha thanks Arlette - I wish! I'm not really much into retail. I like the artistry side of Makeup more than the Sales part. And honestly, I'd rather market my self than the products I use. Just not digging Corporate Retailing.
hey Marilyn - I will try to find a model for the tutorial. I have recieved requests for dark skin tutorial, and latina skin too. So keep an eye on that. GLUE -- DUO Surgical Adhesive is best (not DUO Eyelash Glue). MAC carries these.
you will need to put at least 2 layers of mascara on to cover the lash primer, otherwise if you just put one thin coat it will look grey. It did not make the lash clumpy, then again, that all depends on the mascara you use. So use a non-clumping mascara.
hey Maggy - prep and prime by mac is actually great for any skin types. I suggest to check out the original formula Skin Visage. The new SPF 50 version has a greasy feel to it that you might not like.
hey Jewelybug - you can look into a foundation that has misturizers in it for the interim, like Moistureblend by MAC which has 2 different kinds of moisturizers in it.
Good point - I just assume most moisturizers these days have SPF already, so it call also fall under that category, or some foundations now have SPF too! Make sure you all have some sort of SPF!!
ALWAYS use moisturizer before putting anything in your skin. doesnt matter if you put face lotion this morning, put some again at least 15 mins before foundation. This will allow the skin to really absorb the lotion.
hey Ginalinda - this video is just how to prepare you skin for makeup application. After prep and priming, then proceed as normal. If you want basic applictaion, watch my 10-min Makeover video. I hope that helps.
After watching this vid, I found that I was totally wrong about how to put facial moisturizer. Now I massage really well then wait for 15 minutes before applying make-up. Man, it makes a HUGE difference!!! My skin feels much better and make-up never slips or runs just in a few days. Wonderful.
Yes you can, at least 15 mins apart. So that moisturizer gets absorbed by the skin prior to priming.
hey truly - its a matter of preference. Sometimes I like doing eyes first so that the skin have more time really absorbing the moisturizer/spf i applied earlier. Then I do the eyes, and by the time I finish the eyes, I look at the foundation to see if it became darker or ashy - this way I can make adjustment.

Not when Prep & Priming - i recommend using a toner for a Night Time regimen tho, when you remove makeup and cleanse the face. Fix+ also has a built in toner, and its great for sensitive skin.
