    On the assist button.... A tip for modern on hitbox, this is just preference, and nobody talks about this but I find it easier to not "hold" the assist button on hitbox like you do on pad. When you need the modifier, instead try to "tap" it "together" with your main attack button and separate the attacks in the auto combo into seperate button actions. Want two hits of the auto? Tap assist and mp, tap assist and mp. Two distinct actions. Instead of holding assist then pressing mp twice. It will come out and you can quickly swap your fingers to the other buttons for doing combos vs holding and pressing. No trigger on hitbox for "holding" like on a pad, so for me I found it easier coming from classic. This allows me to use the first button on the second row as assist without my thumb keeping the proper hitbox form on your fingers somewhat, using my index finger to hit assist on the first button second row and the middle, ring and pinky for light, medium or heavy on the top row buttons for the corresponding attack I want. To me it feels more like plinking a throw action in the middle of a combo vs holding a button awkwardly, which is unnatural on a hitbox. So I hope this might help some of you if your still trying this out from classic. I am still learning modern, so maybe this is better maybe not. But thought I would share what is working for me. 😊

      @mountveggie ปีที่แล้ว

      Great idea! Gonna give this a shot. Always found the assist button so natural to “hold” on the pad, but weird on stick/leverless (leading to too many occasions of holding the attack butting and mashing on “assist” by mistake - or just missing it completely 🤣)

  • @gunpeiyaboi5280
    @gunpeiyaboi5280 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    i'd recommend putting the assist on either light kick button where the thumb is or to the right of the heavy punch to hold with the pinky, feels a lot like just holding shift or spacebar on a keyboard while you're hitting any attack. then with the drive parry either on light kick or right next to it, if you're used to typing it's pretty easy to mix it into combos from there 👍

    • @TheOneTrueHamtaro
      @TheOneTrueHamtaro ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For the bottom row I do assist parry SP, with DI as the 4th button on top. For me this is the most flexible way for when I switch back and forth to classic

    • @gunpeiyaboi5280
      @gunpeiyaboi5280 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheOneTrueHamtaro i try to consider the classic switch a lot too, i love modern cammy but hate modern guile, so i have my light on LK and medium on LP to maintain throw reflexes and heavy on MP all orbiting parry on MK while i use my pinky on top for the assist and have DI underneath that because it has a nice satisfying slap with the meat of the palm to splat it out. sorry that sounds dirty but it is what it is: fun

    I follow a specific logic to Virtua Fighter and it goes as:
    Top row:
    Light, Medium, Heavy, Assist
    Bottom row:
    Parry, Special, Throw, Drive Inpact
    I do recommend your thumb on any dedicated block button and that's the reason why I do it to hopefully give me the most accurate parries.

      It seems the pretty obvious choice for using the thumb on the Assist buttons this way other fingers are free to move and use other attacks buttons.

    • @raf_the_riffer
      @raf_the_riffer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dylanlerian5960 True. My issue with Assist on thumb is that throw is L+M, which feels unnatural. If, instead, you put L and M where LK and LP are (respectively), you keep the classic throw. Then put H on MP and assist on HP. If you look at their inputs, very rarely are they 'holding' assist since they never use auto combos.
      But with enough practice, you could get used to anything.

    • @dylanlerian5960
      @dylanlerian5960 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@raf_the_riffer You do needs assist for combos on characters like Chun Li afaik.
      For the throw it’s just about being used to it. After a day or two it becomes natural. Well on some games it’s B+C for throw so it’s pretty similar imo.

  • @SuperJarden
    @SuperJarden ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My Modern layout is similar.
    Top 4: light, medium, heavy, DI
    Bottom 4: assist, special, super (heavy+special), parry
    I find holding assist with my thumb to be very comfortable.

  • @sinetwo
    @sinetwo ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I personally put assist on the top right. Having said that, I've only tried modern for like an hour, but for my "main controls" on top row, for me it makes most sense. It's very clear that Modern is built for pads rather than sticks/stickless, but I'm going to try Modern myself. It looks like good fun!

    I tried a LOT of setups before landing on:
    Top row: Special, Heavy, Assist, Parry
    Bottom: Light, Medium, DI
    It's by far the most comfortable if you use assist a lot. What makes it work is that my buttons are WAY smaller than those. It's weird at first to throw with LK+MK instead of LP+LK, but you get used to it. I super with LP+MP.

    The Classic Layout makes want more buttons (like Daigo did) and Modern give me more space to customize, but I'm still figuring out what is the best for me.
    Because the Assist button it is indeed on an awkward position and I'm still trying some options. For now your empty button is a Medium+Hard for me, so I can use some manual Ex some times and also is better to hold Assist+MH to acess the HP from Cammy for some combos and also have acess to Back MP on the same button.
    If you try this let me know what you think 👍

    Only recieved my own little custom made fightbox (really think its the same case!) Do you have a preference for which finger to use jump? As an old stick user i'm just finding it hard to adapt. I've noticed i'll use my index and other fingers on the right side and my right thumb does jump inputs. At first my instinct was to use my left hand for jump button but is there an ideal way to hold these controllers? Love the weight, size and customizability down to the high end mechanical keyboard switches.
    Got a little OLED on mine too, Is there also a preffered SOHC cleaning mode you use? I notice it changes the movement a lot, I wondered what would be ideal.
    Apologies for the few questions, Know you usually read these so why not try ask? :) Would happily send a few bucks your way as a thanks! I'm only on day 2 now haha. Wish me luck & thanks for sharing this, i was genuinely curious how you'd play Modern with one of these! Love Modern Honda rn.
