I just want to thank you for this video. My 2003 Civic EX has 253,000 miles, and the synchros badly needed replacing. I bought a carbon synchro kit from Synchrotech, and I watched a video about changing the input shaft bearing from Eric the Car Guy (awesome video for disassembly and reassembly to that point), but I didn't know how to take the gears off of the mainshaft and countershaft. You truly saved the day, and I thank you! Some of my gears didn't slide off the splines as easily as yours (I had to use a puller), but knowing they would come off and weren't a solid piece with the shaft was huge! I also found it helpful when you showed how to put the circular wire thingies onto the synchro rings - once I understood how they worked, I could see that the synchros would not function correctly without them. I successfully changed out all the parts and re-installed my transmission two weeks ago, and now it works perfectly. You rock!!
First off .. Great video.. I just did all the bearings including the diff ones you skipped.. They are not sealed bearings. On the bottom they are open just like the new ones. If you think of it. You want them to be open and taken in as much MTF as possible. Otherwise they would also seal up the bottom. Just wanted to share this because I almost thought about keeping them but now glad I changed out,
Great video. Followed yours. I did mine because. Mine would not stay in 5th gear. Changed everything out put it back together just did a test drive. Still won’t stay in 5th gear. Feeling defeated today. Lol. I saw nothing wrong with the gears. Looked great. Back to the drawing board.
Hi, I am rebuilding the transmission of my Honda Civic 2001 EX, may I know what is the rebuild kit that you mentioned and used in thsi video? Any recommended brand?
Thanks for this. I may have lost my trans after losing fluid with an unseated and torn CV axle, casualty of the engine swap I guess. Hopefully it'l be ok, but if not your video is a masterpiece. To a few below asking about 5th gear popping out, it's probably low fluid. Open the fill bolt (midway up and left from the drain bolt) and you should have fluid to the bottom of the hole sitting level.
There’s also a TSB from Honda regarding clicking noise while turning right in second gear. Very common for the reverse idle gear to get sloppy make noise apparently. Heads up, just one of those ‘while ur in there’ things to check
Lol not gonna lie I said the same thing. The bicycle in the back should have told him that. But I'm about to rebuild my first transmission. Thanks for the vid.
No, he got it right. On the main shaft 5th gear is at the top and is the large one. On the COUNTER shaft, the gears are the opposite. Large on bottom, small on top. Still, fifth gear is the top on both shafts. Yes, I’m a mechanic. No, I’m not a keyboard warrior.
Should've given them shafts and gears a good cleaning before re install along with fresh lubrication. Your hands carry more dirt than you can notice, don't want to have any contaminants in there at all. If you have to clean when you take it apart clean it again when you put her back together.
@@l0r4kpl 03 Civic Hybrid with MT 250k+ miles, it pops out of fifth and bearly holds onto third. Looks like I'll have to find a kit that has new forks and springs in addition to the kit I see here.
Man I changed all my bearings out except the needle ones and put everything back together and now I don't have 5th or reverse, going to open it back up later in the week but do you have any ideas of what could have happened? I definitely will test it before I seal the case this time... It's been a nightmare..
Man ive been following yall for a bit now and I really enjoy how detailed your videos are! Sadly my automatic just went out and I bought a used trans two days ago.... wonder how different it is to rebuild an auto compared to this manual..... again great video love your work. Thanks for sharing!
You done ev correctly..the washer that sits between the bearing and shaft, how should it be place..i took my shaft out and fell off so i dont exactly how it was.i know it has a one side kinda push out than the ther side.if you could tell me which side to turn down i would appreciate it.
Going off personal experience, automatics are a nightmare. I rebuild one for a chevy. An old one at that. Had one check ball in the valve body out of place and smoked it in ten miles.
Hey I was wondering what what kit you went with, I've been having issues with my transmission popping out of 5th. I would like to try rebuilding it. Your video was a great tutorial and was the deciding factor of my decision of doing it. I love the content and hope to hear back.
I put a link to the kit I used in the description of the video. I ended up finding it on eBay. I don't know if it's still available or not, but when I was looking most of the kits were only bearing kits. This one included synchros, bearings, and seals.
Does anybody happen to know where I can find one of those snap rings on the synchro gears or the actual name/part number? Lost 5th gear, and upon taking my transmission apart, I've now realized I'm missing that gear (I'm also assuming that's the cause of losing 5th gear considering ALL of my synchros look brand new).
That’s a bad ass video thanks. It will help me a lot. I have a question where do I can get the whole kit bearing to restore my transmission. any website. that you recommend me ?? Thanks.
Thanks for this video. I just replaced my 2004 civic 5 speed with a “certified good used part” and it ALSO makes a bunch of noise in third gear. Drives just fine but I’m guessing these transmissions are bad for synchros.
I'm replacing a clutch on this same transmission....I found plastic pieces behind the axle shaft seals.....but don't see anything plastic in your video......any ideas?
That would be the fluid splash guide( I don't know thr exact name for it!) My little brother's had the exact same thing it sits in one side of the case I don't remember which side tho
There's only 2 on the counter shaft and they're different sizes. The input shaft has 4, and I believe they all have the same amount of teeth, but I think they were slightly different sizes. You'll have to match them up when you take it apart.
Thanks! And everything held up great for the time I owned it. Sold it awhile ago for a different civic, so I’m not sure what the current condition of the bearings/synchros are. I have the parts that I used linked in the description if you’d like to know more about the rebuild kit I used.

If you use a heat gun on the case and put the bearing in the freezer, it will drop right in without a HAMMER.

Caled the gears in revers order, smallest gear is 5th big one is 1st. Other than that it was a really helpful video

Thanks to your video I was able to see where the Detent Springs go, for d 17a
Thanks 🙏
this video is pure gold. thank you
I’ve been debating on doing this because my em2 won’t even go into 5th gear. I think gonna give it a shot now. How long did this take in real time?
It took us about 3-4hrs, but we probably could've done it in half the time if we weren't filming the whole process.
I have the same problem. 5 gear keeps popping out. Did you find out the issue? Please let me know! Thank you!

Nevermind I got it 😎 synchro collar.
I noticed the ebay link is no longer available and I can't find a rebuild kit like this one complete with synchros. Any links for similar kits? Thanks
Commenting in case someone links
I just checked the link and it still worked. Says there's currently one available. Otherwise I don't know of any other kits aside from this one.
All state gear has them

Hey! Where do you find that rebuild kit and what is the kit number? I couldnt find it!
I found it on eBay, and I have the exact kit that I used linked in the description of the video.
Thank you man! Keep doing what you're doing. Amazing work.
About to do mine tomorrow, have a 2002 ex 5 speed but I thought I would have a 5th gear detent spring but didn’t see change it in yours?
Perfect. This is such a great video, man!
It really is.i did the same thing to mine.
I finally got ahold of a D17 trans for a swap, about to tear into it, came back here to relearn.
great video!can i use this for a 2006 honda civic manual?i cannot seem to find one for the 2006 to 2011 series?

It's prolly the D10 bolts. Those 2 bolts are what keep your car in gear. Replace both those and it should fix the probldm
@@garychew3599 check your fluid, 5th is the first gear to pop out when it's low
@Austyn Schasteen what are the d10 bolts? Are those on the outside of the trans housing?
Do you think it's necessary to replace synchro springs while it's all apart?

If I've lost 5th gear and reverse (can't shift into them anymore), does that mean the issue is likely with the syncros? It has 460k on it.

What cordless ratchet u using
1.53min
thats the detent spring, is the spring same size with d16? im wondering to get the speedfactory detent spring set
How can I know the numbering of the rollers to buy them by vine
Very nice job
Is the motor a 1.7 vtec? Or is it the non vtec. I know the transmissions are a little different depending on the motor
The motor in the red Civic that this transmission is going into is non-vtec, but the transmission itself is off of a Civic that was vtec.
So hows the transmission? Any grinds?
Next time don’t use a pick u can damage bearing. Use socket of equal size or mallet so impact is equally distributed.
is any close ratio for D17 trans on market?
Where you buy this kit rebuil??????
Hope you figured out that upon disassembling, you were flipping and not flipping random parts
Doing this can fix a gear that pops out ?
Yes.
WOW, after I watched this video; I just had to subscribe.
Where is the 5th/reverse dentent spring located?
Great video!!!! Thank you
