I saw someone interpreting Jennifers situation as the cycle of abuse, horrible things were done to her and now she need to hurt others to feel "good"
I.... guess thats an ok interpretation but all i can think of is the dumb demon plot point
she has to eat ppl to stay alive tho its not a choice
Yup this is exactly what the makers wanted to convey
That how women r objectified in the society and how it's been so normalized as we see in the movie she despite being a young teen girl has been objectified and as the name suggest " Jennifer's body" Is the only thing they look at not who she is as a living breathing person
The objectification was to such an extend that she herself only sees herself as just a... Body ( like uk how we use the term body for dead bodies) that in the last scene when needy stabs her she says " My tits"
Well this was made on women's suffering and how it's normalized and very overlooked ( just like most ppl overlooked it in the movie) bad marketing did have some contributions too but if u wanna know the whole thing this is explained on a channel " The talk "
The fact that I would’ve actually listened to “shut up you’re not my real dad” in middle school feels like it says a lot about me

Nope, not me.
Jennifer doesn’t have a character arc because she is no longer inside her body after she is sacrificed. The demon has taken her.... sure she has her memories, but she isn’t Jennifer anymore.
i agree even if that is still “jennifer” the demon changed jennifer to be unlike herself
Perhaps it would have been interesting if the movie was about Jennifer trying to take control of her body from the demon and was constantly fighting with herself.
i really feel like the last piece of jennifer was in there. i think she was in there holding onto friendship with needy. so when needy killed her, she not only killed the demon but the last piece of jennifer. IF THAT MAKES SENSE LOL

I think it’s crazy that the main point of the film is so obvious but a lot of people don’t pick up on it. I instantly recognized this was suppose to be a metaphor about rape and how it changes and effects the victims. I think all the humor and demon stuff hides that but it was pretty noticeable for me.
I think the marketing probably put alot of people in the wrong mindset to try and understand this movie. That and the fact that rape as an issue (let alone as a trauma) is hardly if ever discussed in most households and/or friend groups.
I was reading a twitter/x thread this (long, cold) weekend about some poor girl who got molested. Then she turned 13 and molested a 7 year old boy and got caught. That poor boy could well do some horrible shit when he gets older.
I sometimes wonder how humanity can survive or if we even deserve to.
To make it about blaming men as the problem, when the overwhelmingly majority of men do not commit such acts, and that men are also victims of SA, is sexist tho.
@@idkwhattoputheretbhbuthere But the majority that do commit them are men so..? And who said men can’t also be victims?
@@merlinho0t Not even close to the majority of men commit such acts. It's a tiny group of people. And men being the majority doesn't mean there aren't tons of women that commit SA. Also, men are way way more likely to not report their experiences, and men's experiences are usually disregarded.
It's amusing to me that certain girls are so expected to look glamorous that "looking rough" looks more like not wearing makeup to normal people.
Makeup good, natural face bad.
Great logic right there.
@@josepho3366

@@josepho3366 and they wonder why girls have such body image issues
I was wondering if they put make up on Megan to make her look worse or if they told her just don't go to glam that morning, cuz imagine your normal face being referred to as ugly for an entire film.
I totally agree, but in this case that is the point of Jennifers character. She is popular and pretty and always glamorous, so not using making make up and looking normal equals to rough for her character.
I think Jennifer is both jealous and in love with Needy, and so is Needy with Jennifer; to me, it seems like they developed a sort of codependency
Being jealous of someone and having romantic interest in them is really confusing. Especially if you're the same gender and you thought you were straight. It really is confusing and very... hard to understand.
Yeah, definitely getting those vibes
Yeah...that could end badly...😳

“I am the shadow in the prism of a teardrop. My heart is a child crying at the bus stop.”

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I LOVE HORSES
I think the point was that she’s hurting random men who had nothing to do with her assault, and that “destroying” men (i.e. tearing them down) makes her feel powerful and rejuvenates her. It’s an allegory for how battered women usually can’t take direct revenge against the abuser so they take it out on everybody around them to make themselves feel better. When you put everything into the context that Jennifer was insecure and traumatised, it all makes sense why she did the things she did. I love this movie and it’s metaphors on trauma and the hardship of navigating adolescence.
Yeah I think she didn't attack them directly bc that's too traumatising for her probably, every guy she kills is them instead
the men weren't random they were all "intimate" with needy. Jennifer and needy have feelings for each other. It was just cut from this movie review even though its like a core part of the story
Well that's what every serial killer's story is whether it be a guy or a girl
oh my god wait that does make a lot of sense tbh i always asked myself what the point behind this movie was but if you put like you said it does make sense, so thank you :D
@@kc-ku1ri well except the football player and the exchange student.
Needy's the only person Jennifer could ever trust, so when the demon takes her, its power is connected to the relationship Jen has with Needy. She can't be killed until Jen loses Needy in the end when the necklace is broken.
It's a very subtle subplot, but everything makes sense when you look at it from that point of view.
I think this is a stretch, Needy just broke up with her and that was quite shocking for Jennifer
@@EmyN I would say watch the movie again. That piece of Jennifer that was still there showed when Needy stabbed her. I really don’t think that was the demon being shocked.

Look at the way Needy looked at Jenn at the bar and kept putting her over everyone else including her boyfriend. They had a toxic friendship/secret love.
Isnt that the point of the movie LOL
Yeah I felt that was pretty obvious in the movie. She just wanted needy all to herself
@@TG-xp5zw yh probably
i swear every time I watch a man react to Jennifer's body they usually miss the point, or the metaphors are completely missed. I also hear the "why didn't she go for the guys in the band", its because she was a victim and was taunted before she died, seeing them would probably be traumatic. Shes not standing up against the patriarchy, she feels taken advantage of, its no longer Jennifer, her body was taken over by a demon, she is not feeling like herself anymore. Needy doesn't kill her because she killed her boyfriend, but because her best friend isnt her best friend anymore, that's why she rips Jennifer's friendship necklace off. And that is also why Jennifer stops floating when she rips it off.
literally. seeing people completely miss the point of the movie hurts. The black goo that only gets worse when you try to wash it or take it away is such a good metaphor for how SA victims feel filthy after they're assaulted, no matter how clean they are. and the whole point is that the body felt like it wasn't hers anymore, which is represented by her being possessed and literally not in control of her body.
This is just sexist though. Men go through SA too, it's not exclusive to women. And it's overwhelmingly mostly women who are the perpetrators in those cases of SA against men.
Them being a man has nothing to do with their understanding of the movie. The movie was executed in a weird way, and I've seen loads of women not understanding it.
@@momomomo__ That goes for men too, it's not an exclusive experience to women. And the gender doesn't change how you understand the movie.
@@idkwhattoputheretbhbuthereweird take. Of course SA isn't exclusive to women, nobody said it was. This is about a woman's experience with SA and we are able to see the nuances of the film in a way that men cannot. While it is true that men experience SA, and that is a fact that should not be forgotten, we also should not forget, this is not a movie about a man's experience. So maybe it stands to reason that men just don't understand it the same way women do. No sexism just different life experiences bring different understandings of media
@@haileybaker1383 "Weird take" then proceeds to also make a weird take lol.
Explain how it's different for men?
It's literally the same experience.
Your gender has nothing to do with your understanding of this movie. The movie is just weirdly executed. Tons of women don't understand it either.
It is sexism because they are saying that men don't understand but women do.

I think the reason why you don't see an arc for Jennifer is because she's the sympathetic villain not the hero, that's Needy. Needy is passive and follows Jennifer around and by the end of the movie she becomes a proactive badass who kills the object of her admiration. Great work on this vid, Alex!
But the movie is litterally called"Jennifer's Body"and for the whole movie it _looks_ like Needy is Jennifer's sidekick. Plus, the movie *does* have some _real_ Villains(the boyband)and does pretty much nothing with them...basically...Needy is a Hero portraited like a sidekick, the boys are Villains portraited like secondary characters and Jennifer is an Anti-Hero/Villain portraited like a main Villain. This movie is a *MESS!* 😵

@@Nicamon If you watch the movie, you clearly know needy is the main character. It's in her perspective and is narrated by her for God's sake. What other clue do you need?
@@Nicamon A movie can be called anybody body and they're just dead and the detectives are trying to figure out what happened. A detective would be the main character. There's no confusion in that. Just because it has someone else's name in the title (especially if it implied they died), doesn't mean they're the main character.

I'm pretty sure at this point I've heard it 150+ times🤣🤣🤣🤣 because I keep listening to his musical
To answer your question at the end, the real reason why Jennifer, even with all her powers, never goes after the band on her own is because the writer, Diablo Cody, wrote this as a parallel to people who are survivors of sexual assault -- in most cases, they usually will end up passing on their trauma by traumatising other people, but will never confront their own traumatisers. That's what the real world looks like, not, as you suggested, a world of revenge-seeking warriors who have been wronged.
Thank you.
Yea but I mean if someone raped me and it gave me superpowers I think I’d do sum bout it
@@rayvintankerson6818 lol ikwym but we can't honestly think about that without being problematic right? I mean, it would be unfair for those subjected to you in your enraged state with added superpowers. You'd never break the cycle of trauma.
The fact that she doesn't go after them is representative of how the violence she receives isn't the fault of a single group of people, it's systemic. She goes after people who remind her of her attackers or are a symptom of a culture in which violence against woman is expected, so much, that they'll be shockingly cavalier about butchering someone and they'll start singing while doing so. Everyone is transfixed by Jennifer's body, that they fail to see the person inside. When Jennifer is stabbed by Needy and she says "My tit" to which Needy replies "No, your heart" shows how even Jennifer has come to see herself purely in sexual terms.
this makes so much sense
Fun Fact: Jennifer’s Body is Megan Fox’s favorite Movie she’s ever done

@@seacrystal6189 - what? She went from being a pain in the ass to being a supernatural pain in the ass. The only thing she gained were powers and the need for blood. Her characterization did not change much from beginning to end.
@@DetroitAlan01 She was a stereotypical mean girl and she had feelings for her best friend that she wasn't aware of. Then after she gets possessed she starts killing men who Needy likes because she's jealous, but can't kill Needy because she loves her. She keeps trying to have her but with the whole, you know, cannibal thing Needy refuses. The moment Needy tears off Jennifer's necklace is the moment she realises how she ruined the only valuable and actually honest relationship she had. Then she dies at her hands. I absolutely love this movie lol it's much deeper and darker than it looks, and I think a lot of the hate it receives comes from men who don't understand why not every movie is made for them. This movie's target audience is teenage girls/young women, it talks about s3xual assaut, sexual self-discovery (since Jennifer and Needy are bi and clearly attracted to one another but don't know how to react to this), in a way that doesn't romanticise the abuse (Jennifer literally goes to her best friend's house in search for comfort after being r4ped and vomits black goo that cannot be cleaned all over her house). It's NOT for a male audience, despite having being marketed as if it was, so it receives a lot of hate

Diablo Cody writes movies that aren't necessarily comfortable for either sex or any politics. "Juno" was a prolife movie that didn't pull punches as to whether men even deserved to spawn children.
I wish more men had watched both movies.

I think what hurt this movie is that Megan fox was just looked as a pretty face rather than a good actor. I thought the dialogue was stupid but it makes sense considering they are teens.
But I first saw this when I was in high school and rewatching as an adult. I can see the messages you are talking about.
However I will point out that they should've made it more clearly. The movie definetly went at a fast pace. Maybe it was a product of its time and the director would've liked to focus on the survival aspect of a victim and the trauma that comes with it, but the studio interfered and said to keep that out.
If a movie like this were to be made today. It definetly would explore the self discovery of both nedy and Jennifer. As well as mental illness

Hi
The story is Jennifer was ruined by what happened to her. She couldn’t get revenge but only be destructive because she was destroyed. She was a hollow form of who she used to be until she died.
Her friend becomes stronger by figuring out what happened and taking action so she is the empowered one in the end.
There is no happy ending with trauma because it changes you forever, but you can make the best of it and ensure the traumatizers don’t continue.
that makes sense, though i can see where if that was its message it could've, lets say, pandered to people better and been more successful, sometimes you have to be agressive with your message, but if you really want it to sell you have to tone it down some, but i get what its trying to say
"You were always a bad friend"...?

You're definitely missing (or at least ignoring) Jennifer's sexual possessiveness over Needy. She's not jealous of Needy, she's jealous of anyone who Needy likes. They're bi.
Edit: for those thinking he addressed it enough... he didn't. He barely addressed Jen being a bi victim of sexual and violent assault was so important as to be the main theme of the movie. One offhand comment does NOT a proper acknowledgement make. He ignored the movie's theme, or at least fell prey to the same marketing that everyone involved with the movie despises. Seriously. You can't brush off the main themes. I like his reviews, but he really missed the mark here. I'm not sure he understood the movie at all.
I think he knows but he didn't mention it. If he has seen essays I bet he read about that too.
Maybe he didn't want to bring that up, because it seems like "let's fetishize the lesbians!"
He does mention it
@@Naathalia12 I dont think it actually fetished wlw. It showed jealously. Also its a massive detail in the movie
Wait I dont get it can you explain?
I've noticed most male TH-cam movie reviews dislike or give this movie a mixed review, whereas the female film TH-camrs are way more positive towards it. A preference is fine, but its kinda interesting how that is seemingly so polarizing for no real reason I can think of. Like most people enjoy Mean Girls. I've noticed the same with Heathers so it could be female led dark comedies don't make sense to some guys.
It’s because it was made specifically for a female audience. The fact that most of it is very metaphoric to things that happen to most girls is something that could go over the head of many guys. And it’s completely understandable. It’s a movie that talks to personal experiences.
@@linaaviles1971 yeah but Mean Girls also is directly for female audiences too, so is that just an anomaly? And I feel like other things like The Devil Wears Prada gets praise. I don't hear/see people talk about movies like Legally Blonde or Clueless much either, but I assume those are also more straight forward comedies
I'm a guy and I liked all three movies so... 🤷♂️
@@strahinjagov said most not all, and are you a TH-cam film reviewer? Lol, but genuine question I think I saw 24Frames of Nick give Jennifer's Body a negative review, watched Dylan is in Trouble just completely miss the humor on both the movies I listed. And for Heathers especially the musical is popular within the LGBT community, so it seems like a lot of straight guys in particular don't get it
@@13realmusic You listed two or three reviewers which I'm pretty sure does not constitute "most guys." I do get what you're saying though, some people have a hard time understanding or connecting with a piece of when you're not the target audience, which is something I always try to keep in mind when I watch something that clearly isn't intended for me. Now I haven't seen those reviews you mentioned so I'll take your word for them, but as far as Alex goes I don't think it's that he doesn't understand JB's themes, he just felt they weren't fully fleshed out, and honestly I think he's kind of right. I still like the movie, but I do think it's trying to say a little too much compared to something like Mean Girls where the message is conveyed a lot better, but again that's just my opinion.

Tw sexual assault
Something you said at the end just made sense to me. You said Jennifer got violated by men, and then her subsequent demon powers came from men, so it was contradictory, but in fact, a lot of people become more sexually active after being violated. It’s basically a trauma response. Something happened where control was taken from them, so they do what they can to feel in control again. That might be why she had to eat boys after she got sacrificed by boys/men. She ate them because they ate her first.
That's a good metaphor, however wouldn't make it even worse to expirience your trauma again?
@@iatemycat5320 like the comment states,it makes sense for some to start doing the act that affected them to get some sort of sense of control over it though that doesn't apply for everyone.

@@shimshamjunior maybe cause her hatred for men was so big she pretty much wants them extinct? Or something
The movie is about rape, and if you search for the explanation of it, all makes sense, it's not a random movie, it's about how society see women and how rape can change someone. It's not literal, of course, but is waaay deeper than it looks, and I was suprise when I discovered the meaning. There's a interview where Megan and the director talk about it too.
Edit: I dropped the info. Chill out and search for the interview if u want, see it for yourself before trying to comment about it ✌
First, they got inspired by a real story to make this movie. Check the story of Elyse Pahler. Second, I personally think that Jen was kinda jealous of her friend. Maybe jealous of her relationship with Chip. In fact he was the only guy who didn't even think about her till the end, despite she was the most popular girl in that school. As usual, in these movies, girls like her get lots of bad/toxic relationships and that's why I think that she kinda hated Needy. In my opinion her feelings were between love and hate. That would explain why she never hurt Needy, but at the same time she killed her beloved one. P. S If there's something we don't understand in Europe about USA, is this hatred towards men. I'm a girl and honestly, I find disgusting this way to judge all men as beasts, 'cause on the other hand, lots of women aren't better.
The interesting thing is how I picked up on it at the age 11 (and my sister at 14) but men tend to completely miss the point. It just goes to show how important an audience is for the movie

TW rape culture/sexual assualt
For the part where you critiqued how Jennifer's body couldve gone in the thriller revenge story or a story of taking back control. Jennifer's body metaphorically was a poke at rape culture/male gaze, the exploration of the underestimation of women, and the subtle expression of queer love (Jennifer's relationship w/ Needy) and that's why the movie worked so well for many people (especially women) as the plot doesn't let Jennifer's assault define her story and rather focuses on her experiences as a succubus and relationship with Needy. Thinking that this movie should be a revenge story is probably influenced by the decades of media where sexual trauma is framed as a motivation and 'weakness turned into strength' (for specifically female characters) when that's not the case with this movie at all. I definitely recommend watching some analysis videos and reviews of Jennifer's body made by women (who were the target demographic for this movie) before coming to an conclusion, since (and no hate to you at all) you aren't the demographic for this movie and likely wouldn't understand the deeper meaning behind this movie

I love this film because the point of Jennifer is that she died when she was sacrificed and there's still a semblance of her left but now it's corrupted by the demon and so she sabotages Needy because she loves her but it's now twisted. The reason it's called Jennifer's Body is exactly the point you made, Jennifer doesn't get a character arc and it's because she died, all that is left is her body and the succubus uses this to feed. However, at the same time New Jennifer DOES get a character arc across the film except it's not positive, at first she goes to Needy because she knows she'll be safe and she doesn't understand what happened (she fucking died for fucks sake), she stays by Needy but when Needy realises that something's wrong the demon no longer sees her as an ally and removes that connection so it starts twisting the knife of their weird friendship/something more they couldn't explore. This is where Needy decides she needs to start taking action and breaks up with Chip to protect him and finally the demon hits Needy where it hurts, it kills Chip and breaks that final connection between Needy and Jennifer giving Needy the freedom to kill her because Needy knows that Jen would never hurt her like that, Jennifer is gone and the demon needs to die. I would wager the reason Jennifer never goes after her killers is because the demon made a deal with the band and it's holding up its end of the bargain so Jennifer being controlled and quickly losing her humanity doesn't do anything; she even tells Needy what happened because the part of Jen that's still in there knows that it's fucked up but she won't do anything about it because of the demon. Needy on the other hand doesn't have the same restrictions since she's not being controlled she's just got the powers.
TLDR - Jen died when sacrificed and all her actions were controlled by the demon possessing her and the only humanity she had left was her love for Needy.
Well said!

I swear they only put that scene in the movie so men could get off, it made no sense but in a way I also believe Jennifer might’ve been in love with Needy or at least jealous
@@rachelkania8005 I don't think so, the main director was a woman, you can look at the reunion interview they did last year, the marketing targeted the wrong public
@@rachelkania8005 jennifer was in love with needy, that's why she kept eating boys she liked. Chip was just the boss level I guess, like she was working up the courage or something because of his proximity and importance to needy. She wanted her all to herself, thats why she dies after needy rips off her necklace, it's a direct symbol of their relationship ending (breaking up). Think about, a large pole didn't kill her, but a box knife did; Jennifer's heart/soul resurfaced in that moment and leaving the demon entity vulnerable. I think her overall vessel just became ineffective to be honest, needy was probably anchoring her spirit in a way, she,(jen) had all the chances to kill her (needy) and didn't try before the climax, I'd argue that even then it was just a girl fight, and she was going easy on needy.
