This movie is like an actual fever dream, and to watch it as an adult is so different than growing up with it as a kid. And I'll tell you the one, biggest reason why we loved it. Texture. The texture in this movie, from the costumes to the horrible CGI stuff to the milk and cookies scene - everything just feels so satisfying like you can grab it. Plus most of us saw it theaters or at home with 3D glasses (because the DVD case came with them too lol) so that was pretty cool for the time :)
Never knew this movie as a kid, but I can really imagine the satisfying feeling 😁 like, for a kid, it can give you the feeling of actually being able to escape in some kind of fantasy world lol
I remember that! And I remember we lost the 3d glasses, so we spent a very long time trying to figure out how to turn off the 3d settings in the main menu.
Wow. I think you are correct. As a kid, I definitely focused on that. The lines in lavagirls suit. The way the cookies looked. I remember that. Something about it definitely grabbed my child brain. Despite being one of the ugliest weirdest dumb movies ever made.
Texture is a good term to describe this movie. I remember getting a Shark Boy toy from McDonald's as a kid and all of it was plastic, except for the rubbery grey spot on his chest. I'd poke and rub it imagining it's what a shark felt like, as well as what the costume in the movie felt like lmao. Also George Lopez, I was a huge George Lopez fan as a kid which is probably a big reason I enjoyed it so much
Think about it this way: Imagine you had to write a movie script at five wouldn't you write something similar to this? I think that's why people feel nostalgic over it.
This movie is so special and charming because it was a faithful recreation of a real child's dream. It's not supposed to feel like a dream, it really is a dream, which lends it authenticity and makes it connect with children in a way no adult could really understand. And because the dream was that of the director's kid, this movie is a love letter from a parent to a child. Instead of adults trying to make a digestible mass marketable product based on what adults think kids like, this movie actually listened to what kids wanted. No movie better captures the wild imagination of children in such a way, and in that way it's an artistic accomplishment. Art in movies isn't about making the most easily to understand series of events possible, art in movies is capturing an expression.
Robert Rodriguez, the director of this film, was notorious for two things: Making films with really low budgets (So the CGI always looked crappy), and making movies for kids. Okay wait stop, we all heard him say purple flames for hair right? That’s the real conflict in the movie, the main character is colorblind and he doesn’t even know it🤦🏾♀️
This movie is honestly just about a kid dealing with depression, because his father and mom getting a divorce, he gets bullied, his dad can’t finish his inventions and he just has to learn to face his own feelings
The only thing I remember from this movie is that sharkboy and Lavagirl represented his parents, because they " Hurt each other when they were close." Or something like that. I always read it as a form of coping for a generation of kids who's parents kept splitting.
Is no one gonna talk about that actor who played Linus? For a kid, he’s really good. It’s clear he took his role seriously, even if his character is poorly written
One thing that I think was severally under-developed in this move was the minor subplot about Max's parents fighting & possibly getting a divorce. There are seeds for it planted throughout the movie, but it's not really a factor. The writers could've used it to explain why Max focused on his dreams so much that he eventually got as wrapped-up in them as he did & developed that subplot a bit more so it doesn't come across as tacked on.
when i was 7 this was the most amazing thing to ever exist and I would ask to play it over and over on dvd. Now i'm so confused how I liked this, it makes no sense at all but the nostalgia hits me hard
As well as Disney XD. Plus if yoi jad to either fight for the remote or wait for your other show to comw and watch whtever your sibling wa ted to watch. So this was all you had. Heck even i rememebr this movie because of how much they passed it and i don't even like it
As an adult it's definitely a strange trip of a film, but as a kid it made me truly appreciate the importance of dreams. I keep my own dream journal as part of my therapy, and it's really helpful for both recovery from the past and learning more about myself in the present. But I also had an irrational fear of George Lopez till I was 7 so yeah
I believe I read somewhere that there are things in the movie that link it to the larger Rodriguez/Tarantino universe. It's like how the uncle in Spy Kids is actually Machete.
Interesting fact!!! The movie was made by the directors son and the son had a huuuge part in making the movie!! He picked cast and helped direct and created all the concept designs :) that’s why it’s strange because it’s all a child’s imagination
This was, and I cannot express this enough, was my FAVORITE movie as a child. I remember being in like first grade and getting too excited that it was going to be on Disney that night. Or how I tried to start my OWN dream journal, only to quit after like two days.

It’s so weird and incoherent because the whole thing was basically lifted verbatim from a story that the director’s very young son thought up. The kid also had say in a lot of the creative decisions, even sitting in during the auditions
I loved this movie as a kid… forgot it existed for like over 10 years and thought it was something I’ve only dreamt lmao. But apparently it’s real I’m- wow. Like this movie made my childhood. Also, I’ve had major nightmares about that huge electric ball man as a kid…🤣
Didn't the beginning of the story say he learned how to communicate with them? Or he made friends with them because he fed them so the shark spared him? Either way I got the impression only SharkBoy could understand them so we were hearing what he was hearing, not that the sharks could actually talk.
I'm watching this while having the flu and honestly, this video is providing me with the laughs I haven't had in a while. Thank you for making me laugh while I recover from being sick
the story is actually by the director’s son. it is literally from his son’s dream. hence all the nonsense and random stuff, because you know, kids. the director just wanted to give his son’s story a chance at the big screen. and also, the director’s son is young sharkboy. it really was a cringey movie. 😅
Malea Playz yeah. saw the behind the scenes way back. you can really see the son’s excitement on the set. his favorite character was sharkboy that’s why his father gave him the role of being young sharkboy. it was cute. makes you wanna ignore the cringiness of it all and see the imagination of the child.
UnofficialBeauty Queen it was one of my most favorite movies ever. i mean i LOVED the graphics, it was a WOW moment for me. now, however, i can’t watch this movie without laughing like alex. 😂
I was like- 3 or 4 and this movie was on like.. EVERYDAY. I was obsessed with it. It's probably concerning how long it's been on TV because it was still on a certain channel in around 2013.
Because CGI of this quality was normal back then. We didn't know any better till Avatar came out. Mind you I think they were trying to do the whole 3D thing and that didn't help
I didn't either. That's probably due to a combination of my naive childhood mindset of "Hey, a movie! You guys *must* have gone through a lot of effort to make a *movie*, so everything looks good!" and thinking that the CGI was supposed to fit the atmosphere (for lack of a better word) of the film. Now I'm looking at it and it's one of the most cursed things I've laid eyes on.
I loved this movie! When I was little, I used to roleplay this with two of my friends at recess. My bff was lava girl, I was sharkboy, and another girl played Max. It was fun imagining a whole bunch of adventures they could go on together!
I loved this movie when I was a kid. I went to the movies at least three times with my mom to see it, they even had these customized 3D glasses (sharkboy theme for the boys and lavagirl for the girls) and you got to take them home. I think I still have them to this day. Thinking about it, I own my mom an apology for making her see this three times.
Oh my days yes!!! I completely forgot the joy of wearing the red and blue 3D glasses. Maybe the excitement I remember was for the glasses rather than the movie
Sharkboy: has a whole backstory with the death of parents and animal friends etc. Lavagirl: basically just popped out of lava... Nice story writing max
I actually things it’s a pretty unique concept. Sharkboy is the character Max fleshed out. He gave him a backstory and a purpose. Lavagirl on the other hand is one he didn’t put much thought into. Maybe he just liked her design or concept and didn’t bother to develop it further (I and probably many artist have many characters like this). When these characters are manifested into reality we see Lavagirl have a crisis of her identity as she believes she’s noting but destruction which lines up with her lack of backstory/purpose

The director Robert Rodriguez made this movie for his son (Racer) as a birthday present. Who dreamed up Sharkboy and Lavagirl. Rodriguez often did most of the work on his movies himself, making movies for very little money. Award for best dad goes to Rodriguez.

I still love this show Side note, I think the reason so many of us as kids loved this show so much is because it's exactly what a kid would think of as a plot. That was a hallmark of a Robert Rodrigues movie for a time. Lots of effects with minimal budget. He last directed Alita: Battle Angel, if I'm not mistaken.
“Shark Boy & Lava Girl” reportedly sprang from the mind of 7-year-old Racer Max Rodriguez, the director's son, who is credited with having written the script after imagining and drawing these characters and sharing them with his dad.
Lmao, I mean I never saw Twilight but still. I feel bad for Jacob, having to rap in front of CGI milk and then pretending to be a Werewolf in Twilight with a tight as hell custom to make it CGI afterward...
I JUST realized that in the end scene when the little girl is freezing Mr. electric, the man who is supposed to be George Lopez in the back is CLEARLY NOT George Lopez😭😭
This movie will always have a special place in my heart despite how stupid it is lmao The divorce thing tho was dark that's the only part of it that felt real. Max had to make up this whole world to escape the home drama. Even creating Sharkboy and Lavagirl as stand ins for his parents. I remember the part where Lavagirl is yelling at Max for pairing her with Sharkboy because they are opposites, mirroring his parents conversations about being opposites but deep down there is still love there, they're best friends. This movie is a hot mess but when I was younger I interpreted it as more than a 5 year olds fever dream. Oh yeah and Taylor Lautner break dancing😂 gotta love that😅

When Robert Rodriguez made this movie, he based it on the stories of his child, they got a co-writing credit

Now it makes sense lol
One thing that I think was severally under-developed in this move was the minor subplot about Max's parents fighting & possibly getting a divorce. There are seeds for it planted throughout the movie, but it's not really a factor. The writers could've used it to explain why Max focused on his dreams so much that he eventually got as wrapped-up in them as he did & developed that subplot a bit more so it doesn't come across as tacked on.
Honestly all the movies we watched in the 2000's mostly felt like fever dreams...😂

I honestly don't remember the cgi looking this bad when I was a kid.
Because CGI of this quality was normal back then. We didn't know any better till Avatar came out. Mind you I think they were trying to do the whole 3D thing and that didn't help
I thought it fit the style of the video so i didnt question it
I didn't either.

I think I still have them to this day. Thinking about it, I own my mom an apology for making her see this three times.

Sharkboy: has a whole backstory with the death of parents and animal friends etc.
Lavagirl: basically just popped out of lava...
Nice story writing max
tfw when one of your ocs is fleshed out and you have an idea for a 2nd one but by that time your burnt out
Lol true
I actually things it’s a pretty unique concept. Sharkboy is the character Max fleshed out. He gave him a backstory and a purpose. Lavagirl on the other hand is one he didn’t put much thought into. Maybe he just liked her design or concept and didn’t bother to develop it further (I and probably many artist have many characters like this). When these characters are manifested into reality we see Lavagirl have a crisis of her identity as she believes she’s noting but destruction which lines up with her lack of backstory/purpose
@@AlexDayz Movie literally made no sense:
-Why is Max being overly dramatic with the opening narration?
-Who names their kid sharkboy at birth?
-Why do the sharks act like dolphins when being fed?
-Why do the sharks literally talk?
-How the hell could he have quickly evolved with gills, sharp teeth, a fake-looking fin, and claws? Sharks don’t have #%$&ing claws!
-Where the hell did he get that costume?
-What was Max’s motivation for bringing a complete stranger he doesn’t know into his house?
-How could sharkboy’s dad be in the universe if he just got lost at sea?
-How do his parents not notice lavagirl when she’s literally glowing?
-What kind of surname is Electricidad?
-Does max really need that sh*t load of plugs for just a clock and lava lamp?
-“Dream of drool” sounds dumb.
-Tobor is literally robot spelled backwards. Was this ripping off troll 2?
-If he lives right in front of the school, why couldn’t he escape the bullies by going straight home?
-“You’re in my class! I know everything…and you know nothing.” Why the hell is the teacher acting like a cartoonish bully all of the sudden?
-Why does sharkboy claw a space map to the planet on the board if only max is going and not anyone else?
-If he doesn’t know how to fly that rocket, then how did it even get there?
-When talking about the locations to reach the dream layer, why are they making it sound like a Dora the explorer ripoff?
-Why is Sharkboy posing on the coaster like $%ing Tarzan?
-“All you have to do is keep it on track.” “There is no track.” Then what the hell was that robot talking about?!?
-Max dreamed about his parents being cookie giants. WTF?!?
-The Dream song is horrible.
-Max looking stupidly cartoony when being electrocuted after putting on war paint.
-What’s with those stupid faces lavagirl is making when melting into lava?
-Why does Max need her lava finger to draw a heart on a creamy frosting when he could easily do that with his own finger? Is it for the so called “cool” but still bad CGI? In fact, why didn’t he just say it was shaped like a heart?
-Why was lavagirl pissed at both of the boys after they were telling her about the plughounds? Was she thinking the lay they betrayed her or something?
-Why are lavagirl and Max so happy and joyful about those annoying “laaaa-la-laaaa” bubble freaks? Even I agree with sharkboy that their song is stupid and annoying.
-“Don’t listen to him. He’s a cod fish.” First off, you and max are the ones being happily juvenile over those annoying bubble weirdos. Second, did she just rip off Peter Pan when saying cod fish?
-“Shark frenzy!” What’s the point of her yelling that out loud?
-Why does sharkboy sometimes walk on four like if he’s more sharkDOG?
-Why did Max stupidly give lavagirl the journal?
-What the hell is it with her identity issues?
-So evolution into a shark gave sharkboy to squirt water from his hands?
-Why is the ice princess’ father talking like if she and max are getting married?
-“It didn’t work.” “I tried to tell you, only the ice princess could use it.” Then why the #%&$ was the point of her giving the Crystal to max after she just said only she could use it to save the planet?!? Was she bipolar or something?
-“You’re….light!” Max, I’m light. Thank you.” WTF does that even mean that she’s “light”? Is this copying Bionicle Mask Of Light?
-Lavagirl’s volcano power gives max powers. WTF??!?!?!?
-Brain storm and brain freeze are both bad puns in this battle.
-“He’s going to try and destroy you in your sleep.” So Mr Electric is Freddy Krueger?
-“Blink your eyes 3 times.” Lavagirl, please don’t give that creepy smile again.
-Why does max wake up on the floor with both his hands on his face like a little girl(unless he’s a closeted queer kid, so maybe that would explain)?
-The teacher lifting the desk like he’s #%&@ing Superman.
-“Must have taken a life on its own.” So a dream is so powerful it becomes real and takes a life on its own? WTF?!?
-“I thought you wanted me to leave.” “No I don’t, your my best friend!” Um, no you’re married.
-Why does he does he close his eyes and says please come back when there’s a $%ing monster tornado right in front of him after it just sucked it wife?!? What if that fails and he just gets sucked in like an idiot?!?
-Bad guy dies, and the kids celebrate by playing in the snow. WTF?!? And they’re celebrating as if he’s Hitler now dead even they were never familiar with Mr Electric.
-Where the #%&@ did lavagirl get that Indian dress?
So in conclusion, if there’s no answers to why this bad CGI-ed Wizard of Oz ripoff doesn’t make sense, then their movie is rated a solid “F.”

Oh yeah and Taylor Lautner break dancing😂 gotta love that😅
I really understood the characters in this movie
@@SaturdayParker I appreciate Annabeth Chase on your profile pic ✌
9:54 "Fear exists in the one place you can never escape. Your mind!" Me: How did this 10-year-old child know how to perfectly describe my anxiety disorder!??

The only reason I liked this movie was because Shark-Boy and Lava Girl were the perfect ship.
