Perfect Video, I have a 2001 Chevy Lumina with the 3.1L and the other day it stalled on me for the first time ever and when I restarted it the idle would go up and down on its own and finally stall. So after a few searches I determined it was the IAC Valve and your Video was exactly what I needed to determine if I have to unhook the battery prior to replacement. Thanks and keep the Videos coming.
Helpful video. 97 Malibu, 3.1 V6: Rough idle with a P1071 code. Installed a new IAC valve, then got a reading for “MAF circuit A low.” - found a short in the mass airflow sensor’s wiring harness. New MAF wiring harness solved the extreme high & low idle, but the engine still loped at idle due to a missing PCV line grommet on the intake manifold near the throttle body - same effect as a bad IAC valve. PCV manifold grommet replaced. Problem solved - smooth idle @900 rpm.
The kindle can be reattached, the IAC moves by turning a servo motor there is no limit on it only electrical sensor for resistance so it know when it’s fully closed and it opens to set idle RPM if you had disconnected the battery and allowed the computer to reset it may take a few drives before it knows how far to pull it out for a perfect startup meaning you might have to tap throttle until it gets it’s groove when you’re popped out you just had the thread it back in when doing that always thread it in all the way and allow the car to close the valve rather then starting closed can making the previously stated issue worse
Thanks for a helpful video. I have a 91 Camaro 3.1 v6 and each time I replace the iac valve it isles high 2000-2500rpm then drops after driving to 1000rpm at idle however at next startup it repeats the high idle...any ideas would be extremely helpful

My issues with a 1992 FIrebird - 3.1L engine - : The hose end going to the BRAKE BOOSTER came off and caused all kinds of issues - with that back on and some fine tuning on idle from the repair shop - runs excellent! It was not the TPS or the IAC.

I have a question for you , I have a 94 gmc 5.7 with tbi when I removed the idle air con val the tip was not on it and could not find it could this cause an engine problem ? truck crank and ran fine with new one just have not driven it anywhere. sorry to be so long but here's the ting the truck had not been wanting to start and run right until after i drove it long enough for it to warm up then would fine. that's when i decided to replace the idle con val and descovered the tip was missing and could not find it. thanks for any advice
I have an issue with my 2004 mazda 6 type S it has the 3.0v6 when i was driving it down the road the check engine light came on and then when i would accelerate it would stumble unless i accelerated alot to almost passing gear but trying to drive it thats all it does now anytime i give it gas nyst stumbles and jerks
you can put the pintle back in. Not by turning it because of the slots in the pintle shaft and the corresponding spots were the pintle shaft goes into the IAC body. Just put the pintle into the IAC body, make sure the above mentioned slots in the shaft are lined up with the two little plastic tips in the IAC body that keep the pintle from turning. Hold the pintle in this exact location keeping it from rotating, and keeping the slots in the shaft lined up with the two plastic tips in the IAC body. Then turn the key on. The IAC motor will turn and the pintle will screw back into the IAC body.
Thanks for commenting this mate, I was wondering exactly this as I need to replace the stepper on my Triumph motorcycle and Triumph want $200 AUD whereas the same looking thing for a car is $30. Apparently I just need to swap the "pintle" (plunger), rod and spring from my old one to a new one.
Can I just simply, without even disconnecting the battery, take the old IAC valve off and install new one, than turn car on? Or do I actually need to disconnect the battery what would happen if I did? I’ve cleaned the part before without Disconnecting but I’ve never completely replaced the whole part without disconnecting then started the engine up. I’m worried the pindle won’t match the old one isn’t that the whole point of disconnecting the battery terminal? 2000 Buick park avenue naturally aspirated

I am not familiar with that engine. I would check for vacuum leaks before the intake manifold... check all hose clamp fittings and rubber tubing going to and from the air intake between the air filter box and throttle body as well as any vacuum connection to the air intake manifold
'96 Olds Cutlass Supreme 3.1L is idling at 4K rpm. iac looks clean... I'll pull it again and see if it moves when the key is on/off. It's hard to drive a car that wants to idle at 60 mph.

Sir, I had to adjust my low idle rpm , and i fixed it by adjusting the Throttle stop screw, and it also worked. But then heard there's another screw called Idle Air Adjustment Screw, which is there specially for this purpose of adjusting idle air flow? and that the Throttle stop screw should not be changed but instead the idle air adjustment screw should be adjusted? I'm really having this confusion which one should i be adjusting and what are the difference between.these two?
+Sifat Oishique - I am no expert, but if there is a way to " Adjust " your AIC Valve... I would do that on a heart beat! DO NOT adjust other things before your AIC. Hope that will help :D
+Sifat Oishique - If your IAC Valve is dirty or needs replacement, I suggest you to do so. If you adjust your Throttle Screw / Idle Air Adjustment Screw.... Your Air and Fuel will change.... At a minimum.... You need to be around 700-850RPM at Idle (Depend on People liking... I like mine to be around 850RPM due to Cold Weather where I am). NOTE: Your Computer will " Re-Learn " and adjust the Fuel Ratio accordingly, unless you have the " Old " Carburetor Type Engine. But if you have Auto Fuel Injection, the Computer will " Re-learn ". So best is to Replace or Clean your IAC Valve before doing anything else.
+Sifat Oishique - You are Welcome and I hope that will help you further. I am learning a lot since I started to mess with my Dad's Cars / Trucks for the past 2 years. Although I have been messing with Engines since I was 10 years old. But Cars / Trucks... It's been 2 years.... I know a lot for NOT being an expert, LOL. If you have more questions.... Ask away, I will try to help with what I can :D.
I’m having a high idol of about 2700 rpm after I removed my throttle body and cleaned it .. I also insured the gasket was good An volts were fastened .. if I clean the idol air Control valve would he idol go back to normal?
I have an 88 Supra, I've put a lot into her and now she's idling at about 650, which wasn't the case until about two months ago, I'm hoping it's the IAC and not a cat issue. 😭
My vehicle is a 1994 Chevy Astro Van 4.3 L V6 VIN "W" (CMFI) appears to be the same as shown in the video. I have a few questions. What do you recommend be used to coat the o ring? Is there a gasket? I recommend use anti seize compound on the screw threads because the screws can get stuck over a long time into the manifold. The valve I bought from auto zone is brand "Duralast" and has instructions, but fails to mention a gasket, but says I need to measure and adjust the pindal length prior to installing the valve. Do you recommend presetting the length prior to install, or just reset the pcm computer by disconnect of the negative cable to the battery and allow the pcm to do the adjustment. I have heard via various sources you can damage the iac valve by forcing movement and best to allow the pcm to adjust after install of the new valve. Sorry for all the questions. The quality of the video and the voice is very good I think. Thanks for doing the video.
Hey buddy. I had problems with my IAC and wasn't sure if itnwas good or not. Awsome video really helped me out. Great job andnthanks for making it. I'm replacing on a 97 lesabre in the next day or 2. I'll let u knownif it is a success or not
Best way to do idle relearn is to set parking brake and block the drive wheels. Start the engine and let in get to operating temp. This could take 7-10 minutes. The idle may fluctuate widely during this period this is normal. The computer is configuring the pintle positions. Let the engine idle for an additional 2-3 minutes after reaching operating temp and the idle is smooth. Done

Jordan Bronson yup got it..thanks man.
Sifat Oishique friend, where is located that screw that you were talkng about?

+Steven Miller- I'd bet it's AOK after about 5 Minutes afterward huh???? You might forget that the Computer needs to " Re-Learn " ??? Right ??????????
Why is it important to disconnect the negative cable from the battery for 15 minutes before starting the car after replacing the IAC valve?
I have an 88 Supra, I've put a lot into her and now she's idling at about 650, which wasn't the case until about two months ago, I'm hoping it's the IAC and not a cat issue. 😭
Will be replacing the IAC valve on a 1993 Buick LeSabre custom. Just waiting for the part.
Got it done. Thanks for your help. Great community.
Gonna give it a go tomorrow on a 2011 equinox

REPLACE IAC ON A 2000 Oldsmobile ALERO
I use a dab of Vaseline or spark plug boot goo..you just need a dab...I've put them in raw before...
Don't touch or push the plunger before you put it in..
Thank you very clear audio and video was excellent.

You’re welcome
Dude, you never replied if it worked or not.
Yes it did. Sorry
Done
I left out an important step.🙄 Transmission must be put in DRIVE. Hence the reason why you must block the drive wheels
Will this work for obd1 car

Replacing the valve on a 01 cadillac deville dts
I'll be trying to change idle in a 2002 intrigue it over heats . took out thermostat be it it's too accelerated .
David Fox D.D. if you remove your thermostat your fuel trims will be way off and you will have hot spots in your cylinder heads. Replace your thermostat and add coolant. Make sure you have no leaks in cooling system.
Well done. Thanks for a clear explanation and careful work.
