AFTERMARKET BOSS KIT STEERING WHEEL LAWS - AIRBAG SAFETY DEMONSTRATION!

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 10 ก.พ. 2025
- With the exception of cats/exhausts, after market steering wheels are probably the most commonly asked question we get, so it’s about time we covered it.
New MoT regs say that you can’t remove a factory fitted airbag:
7.1.5. Airbags
This inspection is for all airbags fitted as original equipment other than on Class 3 vehicles.
A passenger airbag that is switched off is not a defect.
Defect Category
(a) An airbag fitted as original equipment obviously missing Major
(b) Not in use
(c) An airbag obviously inoperative Major
This now makes George’s boss kit/quick release system non compliant. George has a brand new carbon wheel from phatbitsuk, complete with airbag that we replace the quick release boss kit setup with.
In this video we try and explain why airbags are important and what happens when they go off. We show you both drivers and passengers airbags being activated to demonstrate a few points about in-car safety.
Obviously, the same as for cats, if your car didn’t come with an airbag from the factory you don’t have to fit one now. What you can’t do is remove one that was fitted from the factory.
In-car safety systems are designed to work together so remove or deactivate one thing and it will quite probably have an effect on how all of them work to protect you and your passengers in the event of a collision.
You may also find that insurance companies will take a dim view of removing factory safety features from the car as it increases the risk of injury and potentially increases the risk to them financially. Just be aware of that as well.
I hope you find it interesting. Stay safe.

Honestly George this content is brilliant. Bridges a gap between the car scene and the police and more important than that videos like this one are 100% going to save lives!
You should be extremely proud of yourself dude!
Thank you buddy I’m so glad that you agree its a shame that not everyone seems to be so on board with the bridging that gap.
Thanks for your support
@@GCMYT unfortunately mate you will find a small minority of people will hate the police no matter what. But you are making such a big positive impact. Like I’ve said you should be proud of yourself keep it up bro 😎
@@carswithsean7967 sounds like the channel found some police with brains who want to work with the scene rather than the guys down in gwent police who just want to appease the local Karens
@@micrahq5954 yes Owen is a legend and a good police officer. You are right there will be police that are knob bees but there will also be people from the car scene that take it to far and be dangerous so it kind of works both ways in terms of tarring with the same brush
Did I miss the bit where you tell us
"THE *TRUTH* ON AFTER MARKET STEERING WHEEL LAWS"?
No your not alone in that.
Guess it's not illegal
Yeah was wondering the same thing
So are they illegal? that was the point of the video not plugging a sponsor but great to see what a stationary airbag could do
It’s not illegal to have a removable steering wheel. It is illegal to remove an airbag from a car that had one from new though, unless it’s a rally car meeting MSA regulations.
I’m glad I live in the US where (for the most part) we can do what we want. I used to think we had a lot of stupid regulations, then I saw the UK...
Yes your right. We litteraly live in a false democracy
You can be raped, become pregnant, try to abort the baby and be arrested and sent the prison, meanwhile being forced, in jail, to have the baby who’s dad raped you.. ‘Mericq

As long as you're not in Cali you're okay
@@eclipsegfxable As a matter of fact, I am haha
I’ve honestly learned soo much from these police videos that I wouldn’t have even known please keep them coming George!!
Happy days I still don’t need to change my steering wheel 🤣 just buy a car pre airbags 😂😂
I was going to say this lmao
No airbag from factory? No worries!
Can you get aftermarket wheels with airbags?
@@ImNotScuffy not if airbags weren’t fitted to my car from factory
@@andysheppard9727 ohhh
all this information is true to a 3 point standard seatbelt. introduce a 5 point harness and airbags become redundant, especially with a hans device (not that many people use them on the street)
Since iv followed the gcm videos from the beginning with owen too i have learnt so much about how to modify going down the legal route
All the emergency services videos are so interesting thats opened upmy eyes that iv never seen so
Big shout out to own and George for making and bringing such great content
thank you
Honestly that new wheel looks absolutely beautiful 😍😍 so much better! I’m also glad I’m not one of those girls that sits right next to the wheel but I will be mentioning to my friends that I know that do sit way to close! Great video George, awesome mix of content!
That steering wheel is absolutely epic. Absolute sauce! Loving more of the interior mods and of course our educational updates.
It’s so pretty bro. Honestly so tasty :)
I wouldn’t say it’s illegal they didn’t say it is unless I’m missing something but at the end of the day ur only putting yourself at risk putting a aftermarket steering wheel on but should in fairness be tied with a proper attached harness but great work George and the rest proper great stuff 👍
Wow i am like 6 minutes in, this stuff should be on the theory test!
If you sit too far back, when you fully depress the break pedal before impact, your leg will lock straight and upon collision it'll either puth your thigh bone till it snaps causing interior arterial bleeding or it'll buck and your leg will snap in two. Theres a happy medium to find. Find it.
So have they stopped you from having a quick release steering wheel even if you have a cage and harness set up to replace the lack of the air bag.
Harness doesn’t prevent whiplash though
@@TheFakeFatLegitimate doesn’t matter. If you have a harness installed say a 5 point then it would be more dangerous to have the air bag there too. I’ve seen loads of people having a roll cage and harness setup with a quick release and they don’t seem to have any problems with MOT
@@ciaranw128 it’d get through the MOT then, but unless you have a HANS device (I think that’s what it’s called...) there’s nothing to stop your head from flying forward and doing yourself a mischief
@@TheFakeFatLegitimate I don’t know what speeds you’re thinking we’re gonna be driving at but it ain’t rallying nascar or F1 speeds
@@ciaranw128 don’t have to be going 150mph to get whiplash, bud. Can happen at any speed, much more likely with an impact over like 30mph
Steering wheel looks mint pal, great video 👊🏻👊🏻
Steering wheel looks awesome mate hoping to get 1 for my mk2 ST loving all the content and looking forward to coming out of lockdown and watching your car meet videos keep up the good work mate 👍
One of the reason that many changed there steering wheels like Rally drivers is to get right set so wheel comes to hand correctly as you set seat to reach pedals properly then arms to steering wheel and for many once in harness steering wheel is too far away so they go for deeper dishing ones like he had in his Focus.
I have been following for along time and can't believe how much you have transformed your st keep it coming and I hope I can soon get my MK2 st to look at beautiful as yours keep up the good work mate 👍
Looks Amazing, love you channel, and tictok, new to modding my focus and have learnt loads, of what I can do and can’t do! Keep up the good work.
7:11 George is definitely copping a feel there. lol
I was just going to say that hahaha
Great video mate. Can see you working on some BIG projects in the future, either on here or abroad for media on the big screen!
Bro means a lot that you think that thank you so much let’s catch up soon
havent seen the "Heartagram" in years. loved that band as a kid 😍🙋♂️😂
I love your videos and always learn alot from them but i don't believe you actually discussed the legality of the harness and bosskit over the airbag, would you be able to do that in a future video?
honestly wish more manufacturers made aftermarket steering wheels that has airbags or a steering wheel where you can install the stock airbag
*laughs in radically altered vehicle*
I.e a rally car with full containment bucket seats FIA grade safety cell and 6 point harnesses. Love a good aftermarket wheel
Loving the vids man, been watching all of them in anticipation of getting a MK2 ST. That steering wheel looks sick 👌
Love this vid bud 👌🏼 the bullet holes and actual bullet is madness. Very handy to know about knees up on the seats when your in the back of a car to 👍🏼👌🏼 keep the content coming boss. It's quality 👌🏼🤘🏼
Great video, I’d love to get that st steering wheel cover from phat bits for my mk2 focus :)
Can’t wait to see this! going to be a good one 👍🏼
Got my ST 2 days ago what a car.
That wheel looks fresh!!!! Gotta get me one of those but what do I buy first 🙈😂 another money pit 😋
Giving the dummy a bit of a reach around there George haha
Definitely a mod that’s always been one of those one that people do but no knows the consequences...

Wicked content not watched in a while unfortunately but back again loving the police vids still and its great you got the mod vids aswell double treat well done 👍
Welcome back Carl. Glad to have you bsck
Great vid G the wheel is siiiiiick! Been looking at changing mine to make it more modern but didn’t know is to re-trim, do a mk3 as wanted to keep an air bag, you’ve just solved the problem 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
“This is one for the out-takes.”... deliberately left in
😂😂
George, such a fantastic and informative series. A great positive assist with road safety. Well done.
Gotta say the carbon steering wheel look's alot better than the momo mod one and worthy to keep those safety features manufacturers put in for our safety 👍
This looks savage, gonna get one for my focus st
Can't be many topics left to discuss but keep them coming
Brother we’ve got hundreds of topics left

That new wheel looks sick! Would love to do something to sort mine out!
That steering wheel looks amazing
No. No it doesn't.
Mate that new stearing wheel looks great... got to get one for mine lol.
Even a cross the pond here in the states the laws are getting a little overbearing.
A seat belt is a totally understandable law, people can become dangerous projectiles according to my tests, so that's to protect everyone. In terms of safety laws, I think it's or pertinent to more heavily enforce laws regarding distracted or impaired driving. Tired driving is a prime example. Often people do get pulled over because the symptoms are similar to drunk driving, but because of our work lifestyle it often goes dismissed despite being just as deadly. While I'm not calling for immediate arrest, a guided drive and a written warning could save hundreds per year. Heavier tickets and nationwide bans on texting and driving would save more to. If caught after an accident an immediate drivers safety course and lockout device when the cars started would be next steps.
Removable steering wheels are the best anti theft deterrent,it can't be driven if there's no steering wheel
People will steal anything if they want it regardless of security. Probably try to drive it with a pair of mole grips lol.
Been watching a while now George. Great content mate. got myself a 2019 ST and learning alot from your channel regarding the mods :) Keep it up!
Fantastic Phat Bits steering wheel!!
Nice video some proper things to think about
It's legal to remove air bags and fit aftermarket steering wheel on competition cars. Can still get MOT legally, as per all modern rally cars
Thanks for doing the right thing and putting the air bag back in, as i said to you before it would not pass a mot without one let alone the safety aspect of the hole thing.im aware that a snap of wheel is cool but keep them for track cars only.
Another beneficial video mate 👌👌
Thanks luke. How’s your channel going?
@@GCMYT not bad mate I’ve got a video going live at 7today been busy as moving haha
very under rated channel well made vids makes educational stuff interesting
Its called personal responsibility, I'm hurting nobody but myself If I choose the drive with a steering wheel without an airbag. Pathetic nanny country we live in.
So much respect for you for putting the airbag back in and not just keeping the old wheel for the scene points, other TH-camrs should take note 🙌🏻
The perfect content 😍👏🏼
I got a phatbitz wheel cover on my Volvo v40. 10/10
Steering wheel looks boss m8 if I had one I'd deffo replace mine with it, been told constantly by my partner she hates me having no air bag lol 😆 still got my standard wheel so might swap over to it 🤔
Great vid again. Agree on the implications of removing an airbag wheel on a, but on older cars the snap off boss is a great anti-theft device 😁
That new steering wheel is mint but it is sad too see the old one go!
In seriousness, a useful vid, will be highlighting a few bits to the Mrs and the boys.
Would love one of those PhatBits wheel or dress kit. Just nervous about stitching up my own wheel 😋
100% my least favourite mod you did, so glad you have finally replaced it and got yourself an amazing looking, almost oem+ one with a proper airbag.
Been searching for a place to get one done and um'd and aah'd at some ebay stuff. Think I will give Phatbits a look!
Another top vid mate keep up the great work 🔥
Great vid as always mate keep up the good work.
I have a Focus ST225 2006 pre facelift. Will those mods fit my model? Cheers, another great video!
Ive got airbags, and my old car which was the same sort of car (bmw e46) was a cat c after someone sideswiped me on a country road, a grand total of 0 airbags went off an yet every panel was bent on the drivers side bar the front wing, both windows gone, b piller bent and it no longer drove straight. So it does sometimes make me wonder how big an accident I need to have before they go off.
That steering wheel is mint.
Another good video George! Your new wheel looks fantastic!
Awesome, plus most aftermarket steering wheels people put on their cars suck, usually the ones without airbags
Been looking at phatbits for while now look pretty cool
Sure, the OEM+ wheel is cool and all and that's what I'm using but given the option to go back to Momo I would in a heartbeat. If you want rid of that hit me up I think I'll have space for it :)
Great content.
I Use to have a boss kit on my old car and I crashed it and bent the steering wheel would definitely not have one again
Well that answers that then, great video as always
Seat belts are the main life saving thing in cars. Air bags air also known as an”srs” or supplementary restraint systems there to assist the seat belt. A full harness seat belt is by far safer than a lap and diagonal inertia seat belt and certainly an air bag.
I’m not sure but I don’t think there is any legal requirement for cars to have an air bag.
I'm actually looking to swap my wheel and been 50 50 and this video has actually made me think twice and going to look at a flat bottom carbon wheel for my focus st3, which brings me to my next point, phat bits please 😂 on a serious note, amazing video dude! Thank you so so much for making me make the correct choice! 🙏
So glad it tipped you in the right direction buddy. I loved my wheel for sure but it wasn’t a safe choice! :)
@@GCMYT can't put a price on life and this video has saved thousands of lives! Well done mate and thank you again!! X ❤
Honestly I can’t thank you enough for that comment dude
@@GCMYT your welcome mate, no joke when you first started I thought oh god chav in a ST but here I am own an ST myself and absolutely love your channel and especially videos like this, doing videos that other people won't do! Again well done brother!! X
I think that people bring the seat right up to the wheel in order to reach the pedals, alongside getting a better view.
These cars don't accommodate for height issues.
Keep the content up mate, love it 👍
That phat bits kit looks awesome 👌
Another great vid George, thanks to you and your police/fire partners, you should all be so proud of the difference you are making to the car scene, I love my ST but think I love your vids more !!.....Well, sort of ???
Sorry iv watched the video and it’s great information but is a quick release legal or illegal to actually have?
What if you have an aftermarket wheel without an airbag and also have a full race harness to keep you in the seat instead of the regular seat belt?
That's something I instantly thought too. Not like it's gonna do anything
Great vid bud and that steering wheel looks class
Picking my st up on Friday 😊 that retrim would be a good 1st mod 😏👍😁
That steering wheel looks awesome mate.
Can't wait to see the new video. Just seen you up by B&Q driving in it should be a good one and I followed his hole build on tick toc.
Great video but the hiding and OTT heath and safety for the airbag detonation 😂😂😂
Actually love the content it's so informative👌👌
Steering wheel looks sick mate 👌
The government should make manufacturers make proper steering wheels then. Ones that aren’t ridiculously thick, aren’t stupid shapes, and have proper reach adjustment. The reason people change them is to have better steering feel, better driving position and ultimately have more control of the car
The one burning question I've always had, especially when it comes to my 1991 MR2 (that never had a factory airbag, even with the stock steering wheel installed) is this. Is an aftermarket steering wheel like this illegal on a car that never had these safety systems in the first place?
I get that if you were to remove the steering wheel of a car from 2022 and replace it with one of these, it would be massively illegal given the removal of the SRS airbag but for a car that didn't have an airbag system until Revision 3 (Nov 1994) where would this leave the car? the place where the airbag would be was a horn module, that's it. There was no ABS, TCS, or Airbag systems in place. Not even power steering was installed on 1991 models.
Love the content m8 keep up the hard work 😊
Good vid, but I had a question I feel this video missed an important point, how would the airbag wheel compare to the momo wheel with full seats and roll cage harness? Given that's what the standard is for race vehicles, surely it would be safer?
A full harness is only safe if you have a head restraint (Hans device). And you can only have a head restraint if you're wearing a helmet. And you can't wear a helmet on the road since you need full visibility. So, quite simply, the current airbag and seat belt system exists because it's the safest option for road driving. Unless you fancy a bit of internal decapitation.
Sick video
Another great video bud 🙌🤘
I’ve got a focus st I love it and I would love you have the retrim
Hey George when will you be announcing the winner of the wheel refurb kit fingers crossed 🤞for this 1 would be a nice addition to my car
Argh, seeing James put his big chunky boots up on the dash of that FK8 made me wince 😕.
Nice wheel George 👌👏more driveway mods
These videos are awesome mate, still hoping to see you rolling around Plymouth, need to see the car in real life!!
so are you allowed a quick release wheel if you don't have a 5 point harness?
treating the airbag like a hand grenade 🤣
I would love the diy kit
