    Building on last years fantastic competition, I’m looking forward to doing a serious cool build to try and one-up myself.
    Hopefully you find the build interesting, and maybe you'll stick around for the videos to follow!
    A lot of you may know and notice that I am building from Crimson Guitars HQ in Dorset this year, but I am not endorsed, sponsored or helped by Crimson in any way except by use of their fabulous workshop.

    You are the first luthier that I have seen on TH-cam that is actualy cutting his fret slots himself .
    I missed how you have located the exact position of each one. The position of the frets is so important that most luthiers buy them already slotted via a CNC machine for high précision.
    Looking forward for the next video. Great beginning!

    • @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars
      @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For a multiscale, a cnc is absolutely the best way to do it, but that requires you to have the skills and access to a CNC machine. I used a scale ruler to mark the fret locations with a scalpel blade. One scale on each side of the neck for the 2 scale lengths. Then I used a ruler and scalpel to join the marks for each fret, giving me the mark for the actual slot I need, and a score line for the saw to folow. I hope that makes sense to you!

    I do like your laminations with the added veneers but it is a shame to cut some of those veneers away when you cut the taper on the neck, Far better to taper your laminations before gluing up so that you maintain those veneers right to the end of the headstock. Also we should should all be aware of the need to be economical with the way we use these wonderful woods. Making up huge rectangular blanks for a thru' neck is very wasteful as a huge percentage of the woods are cut away and become of little use. Far better to cut the shape of the laminations from a board, whilst nesting the components to minimise waste. Yes, they are a little more difficult to glue up but with a well thought out jig it's easy and the savings in exotic woods are huge. You can also set them out in such a way as to reverse the grain on opposite laminates which stabilises the neck. Great video and I look forward to the next one.

      Yes they had just gotten a load of maple in. When I mentioned I was building a guitar, the employee mentioned that there was some flamey stuff there and that they don't treat it any different to the normal stuff. I just dug around in the pile and found a few nice pieces!

    wow, looks amazing this one, what angle is the headstock break angle out of interest?

    • @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars
      @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I drew the headstock angle at 10*, but with the additional planing, and the addition of a veneer later one, it will probably range from something like 9.5 - 12 degree angle. At the end of the day, headstock angle doesn't much matter so long as there is sufficient pressure across the nut.

  • @martyo11
    @martyo11 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice video Sean... Question: Why did you re-enforce with carbon rods for a 5 piece (9 including veneers) neck? Would the multi-piece neck not be strong enough without needing the rods?

    • @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars
      @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah a 5 piece neck is plenty strong really. The carbon rods are complete and total overkill here, but I generally like to have them for the sake of a little extra time and cost.

  • @ChrisFranklyn
    @ChrisFranklyn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It was good to see you hit the tool chest :) Those veneers, are they pre-stained maple or something? Or is it a very dark ebony veneer?

    • @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars
      @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I was conflicted as to whether or not to taper the neck laminations, but in the end I wanted to try not doing it. I think if I was doing it again, I would.
      I 100% agree with your point about being economical as well. It's one of the big problems with neck thru builds is the large amount of waste. I save the offcuts though, and they will be used in another project of some description.
      Thanks for watching and for the comment, I appreciate it!

    • @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars

    • @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars
      @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, in my own workshop I had a 16" with (I believe) a 3kW motor.. in Crimson we have the Record Power Sabre 350 which is an awesome bandsaw. I'm not sure what the motor size is, but I think it needs to be beefy for deep hardwood resawing.

      No they will be kept completely seperate as my own side 'side hustle' although I won't be building guitars to sell. I'll stay building the likes of my guitar stands under the Awen brand, but that kind of thing will be a lot less regular. Crimson have nothing to do with Awen, though.
