What road bike should I buy as a beginner? This video is a review of my 2022 Trek Domane AL 3 equipped with Shimano Sora and mechanical disc brakes. This has been the perfect "first bike" as it has been good enough to allow me to learn about the support and really become passionate about cycling, yet not so expensive or aggressive as other race bikes to make it uncomfortable or intimidating. If you're looking for that first road bike, I believe this is one you should consider. Enjoy!

Super review Mike and All Things Sports! Having ridden with you in groups, I can add that the Domane Al3, with the right rider, can easily outperform much more expensive machines and groupos! It really confirms that if you work hard, you don't need to break the bank on a superbike, to ride fast and consistently. Keep up the great work, looking forward to more reviews.

Interesting to say the least. Back in 1976 I bought one of the earliest Trek bikes. It was the third model from the top, cost about $260, I think. I put it on the scale and it was about 23 lbs. Adjusting for inflation, a new aluminum Domane is about the same price AND weight. 😊
Thanks for the video. I was hoping there was a review of this model before I get mine. I am waiting on my Domane AL 3 to arrive at my local Trek shop. As you had shown the weight of yours I hoped my stock AL 3 will be 3 - 5 lbs lighter than the Marin I currently ride.
Also you mentioned the aspect of changing your tires out. I wore out my original tires out in under 2000 miles before upgrading to 32 mm gravel tire.

I was really dead set on a Domane AL2 but I tried another local bike shop before I dropped the hammer and ended up with a Specialized Diverge E5. Is the bike better? I have no clue. I suspect with my riding proficiency and fitness of 0 it makes utterly no difference or will for quite some time. But the service from the second shop was pretty stellar and confidence inspiring. They really went out of their way to get it all dialed in for me. I'm used to places pretty much being like "here's your shit and there's the door" after they get your money so this was very refreshing. Also there was a dude in there for service with a bike he had bought from the same salesman helping him at the same shop 30 years ago. That's pretty crazy to see these days.
Bikes are fairly similar. Same groupset sand similar spec. In the end you would be very well off with either bike.

Thanks for this amazing review! I am new into road bikes and at my local stored I was offered the AL 3 or the AL 5 (AL 4 was my initial choice, but they are out of stock until the end of the year). I went through the components already and I can tell the differences between them, but I am having a hard time choosing between the AL 3 and AL 5. I would like to get something that I could keep at least for 5 years and I don't know much about components, tyres (so upgrading individual parts would be a bit hard for me). However, I also would need to invest a bit extra money on pedals, helmet, lights, etc... Could you please give any advice here? I would like to start with 1-2 rides per week but would like to increase the number/distance over the next years :)
I strongly recommend the AL3. I just think it’s the best value for money. The AL5 is undoubtedly better with its groupset and disc brakes but I couldn’t justify just under $3000 for that aluminum bike. In my mind, if I’m spending that much money, I might as well spend a bit more and go Carbon. I definitely think you can get 5 years out of the bike especially if you stick with 1-2 rides a week. Also, once you get into the sport, you’ll quickly understand more about components and I’m sure you’ll want some accessories like lights and computers etc.
You can adjust the hoods if you like them in a different way. You need to remove the tape, pull the hoods up a little bit so they're more grabbable, and probably adjust the brake levers to be more close so you can continue to grab them when using the drops.
Yes that’s true but that’s not what I was referring too. Your just talking about the position of the hoods which is adjustable. I’m talking about the ergonomics of the hood which cannot be changed

There are a lot of bikes on the market that I like lol. But I would lean towards a performance bike rather than endurance. And I want something with Di2. If I’m going to upgrade I’m going to spend the money and get something really good. I like the new Orbea Orca with ultegra Di2 at the moment. I’d probably consider that bike and I can customize the colour at purchase

Great bike, I have the same one in dark aquatic. Your review is spot on I’m 49 years old and just getting into the sport and had the same mindset when I purchased mine. I think I will upgrade to a carbon bike next year but not sure if I’ll get another Domane or Madone.

Great review, I just put a deposit down on an AL5 for my daughter, who will be doing triathlons. Do you know if the stock wheels are tubeless ready, and if so, did you consider putting tubeless tires on it? Thanks
They are tubeless ready. I did consider it but I use a wheel on trainer I’m the winter and don’t have a second set of wheels. So using a regular inner tube makes it easier to change between road tire and trainer tire. If I had a second set of wheels (summer/winter) I’d go tubeless

Thanks good video wanted the 3 but would have to weight till mid next summer, so went with the AL2 disc they are telling me January for it. I do have a carbon fiber, specialized roubaix a great bike but want something for the back roads plus the roads hear in pretty bad shape, the Specialized has 23 cc tires and frame will not take much bigger. thinking the 32 tire will be better suited for the rough roads and gravel roads and trails. Hopping the AL 2 disc will do the trick, it has been a few years sense I did any amount of riding so looking forward to get back in to it, at 73 years old. If things go good will be looking for a good touring bike, but do no want to spend to much till I get back in to riding and make sure I can handle it. I do wish they would go with a 3 sprockets at the front, like them a lot more than just two, I run a 53-39-30 on the specialized with a 10 speed on the back. On the island we do not have very long hills but do have a lot of high winds. Thanks for your viedo.

GP-5000 is absolutely fast, the only downside when I used it is there's a high chance of Pinch Flat.

What was the big feature that convinced you to go with AL 3 instead of 2 ?
In my opinion, the 9 speed Sora is a huge step up from 8 speed Claris. When you get into accessories like trainers, replacement cassettes, freehubs, etc, there tends to be much more support for sora at 9 speeds where as 8 speed Claris is so entry that a lot of accessories at not compatible with it

Been wavering between buying the AL2 disc or continuing to save to get an SL.
I currently ride an aluminum FX , it’s pretty quick, comfortable just want to make sure the Domane is worth the upgrade.
There’s nothing quite like a carbon frame. But that being said, it’s more than double the price of an AL3. If you can wait, I’d wait (depends how long) but otherwise I’m sure you’ll still love the AL version

One more question : I’m 6’4, I need a 61 cm bike and in all the bike shops within an hour drive , the AL2 disc is the only bike available. I’m not concerned about hills, I’m mostly concerned about riding fast. I don’t know a lot about cassettes etc but does the AL3 offer faster gear options? Is the AL2 close? The AL2 has 8 speeds and AL3 has 9 speeds. One bike won’t necessarily be faster than the other but you’ll have an easier time finding a pedalling speed (cadence) that’s works for you with more gear options.
Hi, great review! I need your advice. I’m also starting in this sport and I just saw the AL3,4,5 on the store. Also I went to a second hand store and they had the AL 3 at $1300.
I want the bike for training and competing in triathlons and maybe a 70.3 but my budget short.
Would you still buy the AL3 for that purpose?

Honestly there’s no reason why wouldn’t buy the AL3. If you could find the AL 4 for only $50-$100 more than the AL3 then I’d go for it but i don’t think the $500 more at retail is worth it given that my purpose was to not spend a huge chunk of money on my first bike
The price difference is not as close as you say. The difference nice between AL3 to AL5 is about $650 vs the difference between an AL5 and the cheapest entry level carbon SL5 is about $1100. Good video btw.
Thank you. I just doubled checked treks line up. Last year year they made a Domane sl4 which was about 3200. They no longer make the carbon sl4 so you’re right. They’re is a larger gap between the AL 5 and a carbon frame. But if you look at another brand (like canyon) you’re not far off a carbon frame when talking about the price of an AL5
Good stuff…Just got back into biking after 30 years and picked up a Domane AL3 also. Looking to break it in over the spring and ride RAGBRAI in July (7 day ride across Iowa. 50% riding 50% drinking and eating BBQ). Still trying to figure out what combo pedals to go with along with shoes.
Nice. That sounds like a heck of a ride. I think it’s a great bike and so versatile. You can basically turn it into whatever type of bike (race, touring, even light gravel) you want just by changing the tires and handlebar position.
great review, always been a giant man myself, hell iv had an escape from 2011 thats been through about three iterations, defiently considering the domane, how is it for mudguard, pannier rack etc? normal attachments?
Yeah normal attachments and plenty of tire clearance. They designed with the intention of it being as versatile as possible.

This is 9 speed and mech disc brake. The Domane al 2 is 8 speed shimano Claris and either rim or disc. I like the mechanical disc brakes. Not as good as hydraulic disc but still really good and don’t regret the decision at all. Another thing to think about is the 9 speed hearing does allow you to connect it to more accessories down the road. Trainers seem to be commonly compatible with 9,10,11 speeds but I don’t see 8 speeds as often. Just something to think about

Hi Mike. I have my eye on a Domane and was curious about frame size.i think you said you were riding a size 52. Did you find the Trek online sizing to be pretty accurate? I’m 5’8” with a 31” inseam. Just trying to make an informed decision. Thanks!
If I remember correctly I think the trek sizing recommended I ride a 54. But when trying it, I wanted to be able to adjust sizing and not feel so stretched out. Especially given that it was my first ride bike. Sizing down to a 52 was definitely the right call for me. Plus, it’s always easier to make a bike bigger than make it smaller. You could always get a taller seat post or longer stem to help it fit you. But it’s tough to go the other way and get a short stem etc.
Thanks for the great review. Am looking at getting one for many of the same reasons. I own a MTB but am looking to go faster/farther, but not break the bank. What was the "sensor" you mentioned? Is that a bluetooth connector to odometer? (Something I've never had to work with. Still using a spoke based sensor with a wireless odo. Thanks again.
Trek make a DuoTrap S sensor. The frame has a specific cutout designed for that sensor and it makes it nice and neat. It’s a speed and cadence sensor

Have you tried it as a gravel bike? Planning to get one but I would like to use it as a gravel bike as well and I like to install wider tires.
I have not tried using it as a “real” gravel bike. When I first had it, the 32c tires were good for that compact dirt kind of surface that you’d find on the edge of road surfaces. But for really using it as a gravel bike you definitely want some wider tires. You could fit 35s no probablement. And probably 38 as well. Wider than that I really don’t know. You had have to try.

After reading a little bit about it today I found that many people say it isn't the ideal roadbike because of the Weight and tires. Im not going to be riding it off road or anything, just looking to Ride on asphalt.
What do you think about this?? Is this a good beginner bike for the road? Internet got me a little hesitant today :P
It’s a great beginner bike for the road. Shimano 105 is arguably the best groupset for the price that you can buy. Upgrade the tires to a faster tire once the stock ones wear out and you have a great bike. You could potentially lower the weight by upgrading wheels down the road as well

Yeah i might do that. My girlfriend bought a Cube axial ws race last week, and I hired a Cube attain SL for the weekend (last weekend). I went for the trek because it was literally the only bike that was available at the moment.
Im really interested to see and feel the difference in these two bikes because the attain is about 2kg lighter and has 28mm tires.
If they’re quality tires, you’ll likely notice that more than the weight

Is the X speed flow shiny part comes off because if it comes off I will buy the predators
That’s really dependant on the surface you wear them on. I have had old pairs of adidas cleats where it does come off and others where it never came off. The newer seem to hold up really well but I can’t guarantee anything.
Everything is nice too, I have this model only in a different color. Why didn't you mention the knocking armor in the frame. A lot of people can get frustrated by this. Other manufacturers do some protection when the armor enters the frame and it doesn't knock. There is no such thing here, and this is a minus. In addition, a great machine and, what is important, when you look at it, you like it. :)

Thank you for the fantastic video! I’m currently looking at a new road bike because the one I have now is not getting the job done AT ALL. I paid $250 for it, so that explains why, lmao. I know nothing about bikes, so it's overwhelming to choose an incredible bike around the $1200 price range because there are so many good options. I hear good reviews about Trek and not-so-good ones. Usually, it's about customer service if it's a bad review about Trek. Lately, I’ve been eying the Domane AL 3 Disc because I've seen solid reviews on TH-cam and other places. How many miles can you ride in one go without feeling burned or fatigued? I’m looking for something that has phenomenal speed, can eat miles, handle light gravel, and has no trouble going uphill quickly-and LOOOOONG distances without feeling dead. Like, 20-25 miles in one go, if need be. Again, thank you for the fantastic video!
Sounds like your getting the bug for the sport. I think long distance really depends on the person. I have done a couple of 150+KM rides on this.

I've done 200+ km (in the middle of the night lmao) on my 1986 Peugeot and I'm looking at bikes from this century to help push that even higher 😅but I've got a couple solid years of heavy training to back that up. The way I see it - there's speed riders, there's endurance riders, and there's casual riders, the actual numbers you hit don't mean anything - it's about your mindset and how far you push your own personal limits.
I just bought this but within the first 50 miles (mostly road some light gravel) I have a good number of scratches revealing the alloy on the black wheel rims. This is common?

How does the white color hold up against dirt? Are you constantly having to clean it? Thank you!
It holds up well. Yes it gets dirty but it’s not really just because it’s white. The bike will get dirty no matter the colour and it depends on the conditions you ride it. I’d say that 90% of the time I am on dry roads
Great review.. what do you avg in kmph on this bike with 32 and 28c tyres?
There are so many factors that affect average speed so it’s really not a great value to look at. Plus the 32c tires were a much lower quality compared to the 28c GP5000 that I put on now. And I’ve become way stronger since then too lol. I probably averaged 26ish kph on 32c tires and average 31ish kph now on the 28c. But not all of that is just down to tires. I would say I was about 1-1.5 kph faster the moment I changed tires.

I currently avg about 23 - 24 on my hybrid..But i was just wondering how much of an impact the sora groupset will have on my speed. I wanted to go for 105 but since im new to road cycling, just wanted to get used to it and then maybe upgrade to 105 on the al3 itself!
Also i wanted your take on the stock mechanical disk brakes that come with it, do they need to be upgraded to hydraulic?? I mostly ride on flat roads
The brakes are good. I have little experience with hydraulic disc brakes but from the little I do have, they have much greater feel and stopping power. I’m not sure upgrading the AL3 is worth it. I have thought about it myself too but it’s almost the value of the bike so I think it’s better sell this one and upgrade the whole thing.

I think it would be a good first bike for sure. Very versatile and can do basically anything you throw at it. But there is also an Emonda AL which is more of an aggressive geometry.

Would you get this or the 2023 FX Sport 4 that is carbon frame and fork? They have one 2023 FXS4 for sale near me available now at 1,499 in my size. I’m a runner and would only bike once a week 20 to 40 miles. I have three herniated disks (lower back) and need a comfortable bike. Thank you kind sir and great review . Both the AL3 and FXS4 are available. I will be going in a few hours to test them and take one home
Those are two very different categories of bikes. It depends what the intended use is. Are you interested in commuting and just using the bike to get from A to B? Or are you interested in riding performance? You could still commute on an AL3. I do. But it allows me to ride fast and push myself in the sport of road cycling. You could also put chunky tires on the AL3 and explore gravel?!

Planning on 20 to 40 miler rides for fitness purposes but worried about my bad back. Might commute on the bike occasionally to work but that’s only a few miles from home. I’m going to the shop in an hour. The only Domane AL3 they have in my size 58 is the exact color you have in this video. Is she hard to keep clean? I was looking for the dark gray with green letters preferably although the white one is beautiful too
No it’s not too difficult. Just look after it and wipe it down and it’s great

What your height? I’m 5’4” and they insist the AL3 should be a size 52 for me which sounds a little too tall. They have to order it, so I can’t really test fit it.
I’m 5”7 and am on the larger side of the 52 but honestly, there’s no doubt in my mind it’s the right size. I was in between 52 and 54 and definitely made the right decision by going with the smaller size when in between sizes.
I just picked up my AL3 last week and I'm liking it a lot. My only concern is the mechanical brakes. How are you liking them?
They work. No issues. They work like they are supposed. I think I’ve become a little “snotty” in the sense that I know how good hydraulic brakes are and I want that performance but the mechanical work perfectly fine

You can fit a 23c tire but honestly, I don’t know why you would that. Wider tires (25, 26, 28) offer more comfort, can be run at lower pressures and recent studies show that they are faster too. You probably could swap out for some hydraulic discs but that means changing the callipers, hoses and levers
Awesome video I got the same one in the same color with the help of this video. Couple questions.
1) do you have any problems with cross chaining? I get a few gear switching and clicking/chain noise on a few gears
2) are your rear brake cables zip tied at the bottom of the frame? There are two points to do it, I currently have them for only one but not sure if there is a pro/con on tying them down at both points
3) I see that your size is 52 cm. Do you might telling me your height in feet and inches (I know height is just one of many factors for size) ? I have the same size, but feeling it might be a both short in terms of reach…
I am 5’7. Yes there are a lot of factors that come into it. I feel like I’m quite flexible so I think I could fit onto a “racy” frame well. That being said, I fully believe the 52 is the correct size for me.
Yes my brake cable is zip tied in 2 spots.
And yes there are a few gears at the extremes where my chain may run against the front derailleur. I have adjusted in and tried to improve the hearing but I think it’s just a limitation of the groupset.

It’s called cross chaining and really the best thing to do is just to not run that particular gear combination. Maybe I should make a video about that.

The trek just for my price point best and I thought it was the best looking out for the 2 or 3 choices I had. I wanted disc brakes, good looking frame, with some versatility as I didn’t know exactly what area of cycling I’d most interested in (race & performance, endurance riding, off road, tour). This allows me to do it all

Any problem with your seatpost slipping?
When I first got it yes. I tightened the seat post clamp and added a few rolls of black electrical tape to the immediate area to create a bit more resistance to slipping and it’s worked perfectly.

The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

Me and wifey are beginners so you def think the Al 3 is the way to ..does it shift smooth ..I hear people talk so much about the 105 group set …is that so important when buying the bike ..sorry newbie to the cycle world ..wifey thinks this is a good starting point ..you don’t think the higher number worth the money …so as owner you have no complaints and you would recommend all the way with this number ..
The 105 groupset is so popular because of how well it performs for the price (it’s value). However, there is about a $1000 price jump to go from the AL3 to the AL5 which has 105. I thinks the AL3 is the perfect starting point.
to chip in, if you're completely new to it especially in the road bike configuration, personally I'd suggest you look into 'bedding disc brakes'.
I've known a lot of peers who entered and be discouraged because of how their mechanical disc brakes just doesn't have 'power'.
It's just that its not instructed or put in a manual, and the al3 is no exception with that, I bought my son that bike and luckily for him I have known bikes since ages. and the quirks of mechanical disc brakes, so I bedded it in first before even letting him try. once that step is done, and just done properly, you'd have the same stopping as any other type.
but you can't deny how easy it is to brake with a hydraulic system, just personally I'd prefer the less hassle maintenance over hydraulics. I'm more of a long ride/back packing type of rider.

Al 3 comes with 9 speed shimano sors and mechanical disc brakes, Al 4 comes with 10 speed shimano tiagra and hydraulic disc brakes and Al 5 comes with 11 speed shimano 105 and hydraulic disc. Those are the differences between the 3 of them.

Put air in the tires and I was gone down the road 😆. I have a 2019 Giant Cypress but would like a more oriented road bike with drop bars. Few bikes around I want get one before they disappear in spring coming. Didn’t want to over or under buy. Not many hills around Long Island. From what I read I was trying get to 105 group set not sure if less is ok for me. Don’t want to be wishing I bought the 105 vs. Tiara or Sora. I doubt I can say peddle up three frames and turn me lose. 😆 Thanks for your insights!
I get that. From my experience there is the odd moment where I feel like having 11 speeds and the smoother shifting would be a benefit and there’s no denying the advantage of hydraulic disc brakes. That being said, I do not regret the AL3 at all as it’s allowed me to get into the sport
@@AllThingsSportsMikeMcIntyre tested a AL 3 today geometry is good. Brakes felt not so good although hand new not sure if they need to bed in. Shifting wasn't the greatest either. It was noisy not sure if it was me as I'm not use to shifting like that. Oh well on to the AL 4 as soon as they assemble it with the Tiagra group set. It's a trek store so they don't really care where I buy it. They are all very nice there I didn't want to cut them out but they don't care. They treated my GF very nice with her bike.
Takes a little while to break in. And you become smoother at shifting as you get used to the bike. Also don’t shift under heavy load. Especially when breaking in this new bike
How is it compare to al2 disc?
I would recommend this AL3 for the upgrade to 9 speeds over 8. It just allows for more compatibility with accessories such as wheel Upgrades, certain free hub bodies, indoor trainers, etc. I haven’t seen many of these things support Claris at 8 speeds.
Is this upgradable to 10 or 11 speed gear set?
I suppose it can be but it really wouldn’t be worth it because you would probably spend more time and money upgrading all the derailleurs shifters chain brake hoses etc to that 10 or 11 speed. It would probably cost you more than the bikes worth

They do not offer this current Gen in a rim brake AL3. They have an older AL2 that’s rim brake the last time I checked.
Still have the AL 2 with rim brakes option, but no other models. Meaning if you want rim you get Claris R2000 groupset.

Usually, (as in a rule of thumb) a 52 is a small, 54 is a medium, a 56 is a large so 58 would be a XLarge.

Cheaper carbon frames are not actually as good as premium alloy frames and in many instances you actually end up with a bike that is no lighter and maybe even heavier which means you have to spend even more money to get any improvement I would sooner have an al4/al5 with good carbon wheels than an al6. Just my opinion though!.*
Yeah I can respect that opinion. But even entry carbon from reputable brands is going to be an extremely good bike

I say at the beginning of the video “it is a 2021 frame which has not changed for 2022”. Effectively making it the exact same as a 2022. And I got the 2021 bike in July of 2020 meaning I have had it now for almost 2 years.
You are not going to find a full carbon bike for 2100 as the al5, I am looking into the Emonda alr 5. Domane sl5 full carbon entry level with 105 is 3300

Nah, 105 al 5 makes more sense. Ride it a year or 2 then sell the frame and buy a carbon frame and install 105 over on to it. With crap lower level group set you don’t wanna transfer that over to carbon, so might as well buy a new bike at that point. Basically it’s the best way to buy a 105 group set if you look at it that way
I disagree. I’m not I tending to transfer any groupset over and when I upgrade I’m going up to electronic so that doesn’t make sense for me

My point was to buy a bike to get into the sport and I didn’t know how much I would like it. Now that I have experience and live the sport, I want to upgrade to a really high spec bike. That was my point and for those that are in a similar situation as I was, then this is what I think.
The best first road bike is someone else’s like new used bike. But I get no paid promo for that bit of sage advice grasshoppers.

hydraulic disc brakes are NOT a plus just an FYI. It is a CON, once it gives problems you need a tow truck just to reach home and a million issues start happening with it.
That’s such a pessimistic way of thinking. You’re entitled to your opinion and preference. You’re absolutely allowed to prefer one braking system over another because that’s your preference. But it’s quite clear that the benefits of hydraulic disc brakes far outweigh any negatives
I actually agree from a maintenance point of view, but not from a reliability or performance one. Bleed kits and fluids and all this stuff is a hassle but with mechanical it's just a cable. I also find it much easier to be able to swap out the brakes themselves (I don't mean the pads). BUT with well set up hydraulic, you generally don't need to deal with cable stretch or issues like fraying or poorly maintained cables turning rusty. There are tradeoffs one way or the other, as with anything else
I agree there are definitely trade offs but again I think the positives of hydraulic far outweigh the cons
@@_JS96 I ended up buying a used 2016 Cannondale Super Six Evolution with Shimano 105 Rim Brake, and it was the best decision in my life. Never knew expensive mechanical rim brake could be this premium thank god I don't have to deal with that nasty dog shit hydraulics anymore.
In fact this rim brake is so much more reliable and simple than mechanical disc brakes for starters I Can change brake pads in without having to remove the wheel not to mention when I get a flat tire and have to change the tube it requires 0 tools or adjustments on the brake unlike the dreaded disc brake pad rubbing on rotors and having to readjust the whole disc brake assembly.
No wonder serious riders like the guy I bought this bike from only rides Rim brakes, he sold me this and "upgraded" to a $15,000 Pinarello Dogma F12 with Carbon wheels and Rim Brake.

No because I would not have been able to ride for the last 3 years had I not purchased the bike then. I’ve done 18000km since then. And the upgrades I’ve done have been relatively small. Changed the tires, and saddle. The other changes are because of component wear and tear and would have to be no matter what bike you ride.
