We're going to be unboxing a 2022 Trek Domane AL 3! This is my first road bike, and my first time building a bike. I hope this will help other people who want to build a bike for the first time.

UPDATE - The 2023 Domane al3 has been released, and I'm 99% sure it's the exact same bike. So everything in this video should still apply. Thanks
First tip: For the break, you can losen the screws and then break, this way the break will automatically adjust itself correctly.
Second tip: your Hoods somehow should be more horizontal.
Third tip: When you install your pedals put grease on them (only the part that goes into the crank)
Fourth tip: get rid of the round plastic on the back wheel, everyone hates it
Fifth tip: use a a tool with nanometer display to tighten screws
for second tip: I think you need to tilt the front handlebar itself a little lower
I'm going to take it out for a test ride today, so I'll make all the adjustments! Thanks for the tips!
The end of your bar should be vertically aligned (tilting your bar forward compared to current position). If you believe your bar can be even lower (might be in the future) you can also flip the stem, since it now has a 6(?) degree angle upwards.

that first brake tip, doesn't work as well to rod bike disc as the smaller and more compact then mtb discs
6th tip, treat yourself to some Shimano SPD pedals, you won’t waste as much power as you’ll be pulling and pushing on the pedals
Congrats on the new bike. A definitive further upgrade tip are clipless pedals! The road bike geometry and sitting position almost require those for an efficient pedal stroke. The Shimano PD-EH500 for example offer a flat side for day-to-day usage and the very beginner friendly Shimano SPD clipless mountainbike system. Enjoy your new way of cycling :)
I just got my Domane AL3 today and yes I agree - it is SOOOOO much lighter compared to my older gravel bike. Unlike you though, I bought mine from a Trek dealer so they put it together for me and adjusted it to my liking. The silver ring is for the bottom bracket and the two screws are for the bottle cage.
*Looked at a lot of options for getting my **Latest.Bike** . Great find in SAVA. Super light, nice components, really good value as it comes with many options only found in much higher priced bikes.*

Lovely new bike, perfect for what you are trying to achieve, its all a learning process and all of it can be a bit much at times, do things your way and at your own pace and you won't go far wrong.

congrats on the new bike. Got a trek 920 for touring and a trek domane sl5 myself. The weight absolutely is noticeable.
Saw some comments about tips to improve the bike. Mine would be to get clipless pedals and just stick with them through the "falling down" process. It will make such a difference to your riding.
Also, remove the reflectors on the spokes, if it is mandatory where you live then there are neater options. And of course get rid of the dork disc on the rear cassette.
Adjust the handlebars. Try to have them as horizontal as you can. The ergonomics of the handlebars can make massive difference on a long ride. For a saddle then get your seatbones measured for a proper fitting saddle. Bibs with chamois should be a no brainer.
And second most important. Get a Bike Fit. Makes the bike a lot more comfortable and optimizes your power output on the bike.
And the most important. Go ride your bike and have some fun!

New bike looks great. I also agree with the suggestions of other viewers.
Adjust the handlebar angle or you wont be able to brake properly when you are in the drops.
You can check the Trek homepage and look at a sideshot of the Domane to get a feel for what the default adjustment looks like. To get a rough idea: the end of the drops should be parallel to the road surface.
SPD clip in pedals will make your pedalstroke a lot smoother. Also it enables higher top end power when sprinting. If your are a bargain hunter, you can find Zeray ZP 110 Carbon pedals for around 33 Euros on Aliexpress. Otherwise i would recommend Shimano PD-R8000 pedals(those are what i am riding) but these are quite a bit more expensive( about 120 Euro) In terms of shoes i ride entrylevel Shimano shoes RP3 which are fine imo those cost 65 Euro.
If you get Shimano shoes be aware to order them one size bigger than your usual size.
Finally i would get rid of those reflectors and bell asap to make the bike look sleeker but thats just optics.

When I got my first road bike I went immediately to clipless pedals because I was already used to real deal clipped in pedals with track bikes and old school mountain bikes that all had them. Clipless is way easier and less scary.

That looks like a really nice bike. Congrats. It will definitely be a different experience from what you are used to.
You might want to tilt the bars down a bit so that they are level with the ground. But if you are comfortable like this, go with it - thats the most important thing.

Get yourself a £5 sawhorse and screw the mount on top and you have yourself a service stand for cheaps.
Nice bike, bolts are for the 2nd bottle cage and the spacer looks like the spacer for the 10, 11 speed cassette, also you can lose a lot of weight by changing your platform pedals for clip less . Enjoy riding.
Good stuff. You probably want to rotate the bars down a little in the stem clamp. Think about having the bottom of the drops parallel with the ground. The road bike position needs to be feel slightly stretched out, which might feel weird at first coming from an MTB, but it really helps on the road to keep long and low.

Congrats on the new bike. Now I would highly recommend you either get a professional bike fit or at least watch some TH-cam vids on how to get your fit in the right ball park. I would suggest you youtube Francis Cade or Cam Nicholls and find their bike fit vids. Just cos it "feels right” doesn’t mean you’re not busy blowing one of your knees out. Also, there are easy ways to find your appropriate saddle width using corrugated cardboard. TH-cam is your friend for that too. Wishing you many happy and pain free miles. Ride On!

Great choice in bike! My first, and still chugging away, bike was the 2014 Trek Domane 2.3. I was around the same size as you and the only upgrade i would recommend is to get a larger saddle. If you are the same as me then look for a 165mm. It would make a huge different for the longer rides! Enjoy it and i look forward to more content from you!

Congratulations on your new bike, it is an awesome feeling. The best things to learn about your bike is working on it, so kudos to you for assembling it. Word of advise, never turn your road bike upside down, you might get arrested by the Bike Police out there.
i would let a quick roadside repair slip, but anywhere else i will fine you for putting a bike upside down

Those screws are for those two black rubber plugs on the top tube of the bike. They are so that you can attach a top bento box to the bike or an extra water bottle cage if you'd like!
The spare red bolts are for the top tube there’s another bottle cage holder

Woohoo new bike day. My first bike was about the same price/level. I did many touring trips and raced and had lots of fun for 10 years with that aluminum Trek. Was a great way to get started on the road. And those instructions just missed stuff on you. I only knew what was up right away because I worked at bike shops and have seen way worse instructions than that.

Rotate the bars down sightly. The tops of the bar should be about parallel to the floor
Beautiful bike, my cousin just got the same al3 in the sliver and volt. May I recommend rotating your handlebars down a little bit? It may be hard to reach the brake levers while riding in the drops. A decent starting point i've found is having the bar ends measure 90 degrees perpendicular to the ground. if you already haven't done so

Great video mate. Very informative. So how do you find it now after some use? And how was the transition from hybrid to this Domane? Btw 4kg is a lot. It’s like cycling round with 2 x 2 litre bottles of coke/Fanta etc. Quite a lot
Hey pal, so far so good, really no complaints to be honest. Compared to the hybrid it's so much faster, especially on hills, I can just fly up far less effort. At first it was a bit uncomfortable, but after getting the seat and handlebars correctly set up it's been fine, I've done a few really long (100km+) rides and really have nothing bad to say about it!

Congrats! I got a Domane AL 5 a couple days ago and love it! Totally didn't know it came with the switch tool on the back wheel. Had to go into back into the store and ask them to remove the front wheel so I could fit it in my car 😅

I hope you cleaned the brakes with degreasers (brake cleaner for cars)... sometime they shop with some oil film on it and it won't stop you....
For your front brake. Did you tighten the screws? It doesn't show it in the vid.

Hope you lubed the pedals - if not, take em off and lube them.
If those ever get stuck, it’s expensive to replace because you’ll need to buy new pedals plus the crank!
The pedals are lubed, no worries there 😂
You might want to have a second look at the positioning of your handlebar. 😉 If that still feels o.k. than the frame is too big.

Nice video just worried about the seat post and the lubrication I have never had to do that on my alloy bike and the handle bars 😳 that is another no no from me sorry. But hopefully you get the bike set up and fitting you ok the saddle is ment to be narrow wide ones are not great for long cycles 😁. Hope you enjoy your new steed

I wasn't sure whether to grease the seat post or not. The internet says many different things. Some people say to grease it to stop it from seizing up?
Nice bike! Reading other comments and agree your next spend should be on clipless pedals, would recommend shimano spd sl if you’re only doing road rides, would take some getting use to but you’ll noticed a big difference, enjoy!

Not at the moment, but I changed all the cables recently. I can't remember if they rattled when it was new, but I assume if they did I would've noticed it, so I assume the cables are quiet enough

Front wheel is 1.8kg with tyre and brake. Rear wheel is 2.2kg with tyre, cassette and brake

I didn’t get a Tool Box when I bought mine last month 🤔 I got mine from a local Trek store.. they just sold me the bike but nothing else came with it.

Congratulations on the new bike. It's going to be a massive upgrade to your cycling experience. Especially when you stick it on a direct drive trainer !
I would recommend taking some time to set everything up properly. As others have said, your hoods are way out of position. I'd also watch a few videos on seat position . Just 3mm out of position can make a huge difference. I'll leave a link to an excellent video playlist on fitting below. Also.... I would consider changing those pedals for some clip in's. Flat pedals are OK but you are never using you're hamstings or calves unless you are clipped in and have the bike set up right. That's a lot of wasted muscle.

Nice bike! but man... those pedals are terrible! Take a look at what Frederik Ziebell suggests you. Also take care fitting your seat and handlebars. Take a look at some videos abaut biometrics in your bike that can help you with that. Have fun!!!

It’s too heavy for a road bike. But that’s why it’s cheap compared to lighter ones.
I'm not too worried about the weight. I can easily save 20kg just by losing some fat, and that's much cheaper than an expensive bike! 😂

Imagine paying $1400 for a road bike in 2022, having to assemble it yourself, and it being over 11kg. Yeah, we can all try and convince ourselves that it doesn't matter - "It's being ridden indoors so what does it matter", "What difference does a few kg make when the total system weight is over 100kg". We can make excuses all we want, but the fact is every year bikes are getting worse, and manufacturers are selling customers new gimmicks they don't need. Costs are going up every year and customers are getting less, all so the parent companies can display more profit on their balance sheet every year. In 2009 I bought a Trek 1.2 Aluminium, mix of Sora and Tiagra, 9.3kg weight, that would cost $1170 today taking into account inflation. So what is the extra non-inflation related $300 buying us? Nothing, it's company profits we're contributing to.
