  • The Trek Domane might be one of the best all around road bike platforms available. This is on the more affordable side of the spectrum but still features Shimano Sora 2x9 Drivetrain and Tektro Disc Brakes.

    Ignore the 'entry level' label - unless you're racing, this is all the bike most cyclists are likely to need. It's extremely versatile, and can still hold its own on fast rides (my AL3 is still collecting Strava KOMs with not too much extra effort!). I love mine!

      I concur, most of these "entry level" bikes are still superb if you treat them with love. I'm sure the 5-10k bikes are awesome too but most cyclists really don't need that unless they have deep pockets lol

      yes, I agree, but if you don't need the features and are just looking for a fast roadbike with more aggressive geometry the Giant TCR sl(not the advanced the alluminium one) is much better at that price point, it has Tiagra groupset though it has only rim brakes

    I have had my Domane AL3 for 2 weeks, my daily average is 16 miles, I have customized my Domane 3 to how I ride. I installed aerobars, front and rear lights & cameras, puncture resistant tubes. Where I live in every direction are hills, some segments as much 13%. This bike has the gears I need, I train to avoid using the easiest gear (only for emergencies). I love this bike!

    Hello I used this bike and it is fantastic. If you want long distances like 200-300 km a day, this bike will provide your needs and you can also ride with a comfortable position. I strongly recommend changing the saddle with brooks swallow or Prologo dimensions ndr. I ride my trek fx 3 from Genk to Brussels like 225 km round trip. Trek is always comfy. I love Treeeeeeeeeek. Thanks for your videos brooo.

    Brought this very bike last year as an ex runner who wanted to get into cycling.
    It's a great bike for the price. Tbe 32mm tyres soak up tbe bumps on the crappy country lanes and despite being 2 x 9 Sora I've never ran out of gears and they perform perfectly well. Great riding position ...kind on my old back!
    Feel I could ride it all day!
    Yes it's not the lightest bike...nor the quickest and I get overtaken at times by super light bikes but any short comings are down to me...not my bike!

    That's a decent value with room to explore into other genres (road, gravel, bikepacking, etc...). Otherwise, Cannondale's Optimo crushes it with a 10 spd Tiagra drivetrain for 50 bucks less MSRP. I'd still tell a newer rider to get the Trek though. Cannondales are limited by 28c tire clearance. Next move would be to go with a Topstone if someone's not sure about what kind of riding they're going to end up doing.

    This looks like a great entry level endurance bike. The 9 speed soar doesn't bother me at all. I'm thinking it's probably close to my original 8 speed dura ace STI from 1990. My only concern is would 24 spoke wheels handle my weight of 235lbs. In the 80's and 90's someone my weight would be running 36 spoke wheels.

Only complaints are it should of came with hydraulic brakes, the ones that came on the bike are good but I prefer the power of hydraulic. AL 2 and AL 3 what is main difference,which is value for money. Can we used as gravel bike

    • @MOAB-UT
      @MOAB-UT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes but it's not ideal for gravel. I agree, value for money is the difference as well as groupsets (gears, derailleur system, etc.) AL3 is Sora- only a 9 speed. The best bet- by far IMO, if budget allows is the Domane AL5. You get a premium groupset called 105. It's known for having a wide range and it shifts very smoothly. The handles that control the shifting and brakes (all in one) are also designed much nicer. Because the 105 GS has 11 gears in the back cassette (vs. 8, 9 or 10), you can change out to virtually any other set-up if you ever want or need to. You can go down too if you want using a spacer. With the lower groupsets you don't have the physical space/rims to accommodate the nicer and larger groupsets e.g., Shimano 105, then Ultera, then Dura-Ace. You can literally race with any of these sets- not so much with the lower groupsets. The 105 also has hydraulic brakes. It's just much nicer in a few key areas- which is why it costs about $2k. Good luck finding on now- backordered.

      @@MOAB-UT I got lucky and found a new 2015 4.5 Domane. It has 25's on it. What is the biggest size tire I can use on it? Is it 28mm? And is that bike suitable for gravel roads? And can a gravel crack the carbon frame?

    • @MOAB-UT
      @MOAB-UT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@1970banjoman You are safe with 25's. You might be able to go bigger but remember not all tires are the same- profiles, etc. You can also measure. The type of tire would also play a big role. You could have a 25 that is better suited for an activity vs. a 28.
      Could you ride in some light gravel- probably. Would I- probably not. For one, you will get a lot of rock chips and it's just not best suited for it. It's more a marketing thing than anything. Would light gravel crack the frame? Probably not. Many mountain bikes are carbon and they even jump with them. The new Husqvarna dirt motorcycle has a composite sub frame made of the stuff.
      I think the most important question to ask is what type of riding are you looking to do the most? Once you figure that out- set your ride up for that specific activity and it should perform well. For that bike- it is street riding. If you want to hit the trails, also get yourself a purpose made bike. There is some cross-over but when was the last time you saw a mountain bike riding with a group of cyclists on the road?

    Some wrong facts here. The AL Domane doesn't take 38C tires like the SL model. Also, although through axles have advantages compared to quick release, they are not stiffer and also not quick(er). You sound more like a marketing guy than a cyclist.

    • @Jamesthebikeguy
      @Jamesthebikeguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      lol. All this is incorrect. The Alloy does take up to a 38c w/o fender. It is entirely factual that thru-axle is stiffer than QR... That was the original point. As far as speed, if you ever work with a disc thru-axle vs disc QR you would experience the speed and convenience of thru axle vs qr.

    Sora? Fail. 2x9 in 2021 for a bike that's 1699 Canadian? ...for the price give me a Tiagra or forget it Trek. Constantly nickle and dime your customers. Why I stopped buying Trek years ago.

      At the price, you could choose a rim brake bike with lesser tire clearance that would come with Tiagra. Otherwise the price is in-line with comparable featured bikes.
