Great video, you missed a couple major Panasonic innovations which were specific innovations that did not previously exist in mirrorless cameras: #1 Genuine 23.976p frame rate in a mirrorless camera (GH1, 2009) #2 Anamorphic desqueeze in a mirrorless camera. #3 First log mode in a mirrorless cameras (GH4 2014) #4 First external raw recording from a mirrorless cameras (GH5) #5 First SDI adapter output from a mirrorless camera (GH4 w/YAGH). First XLR audio adapter in a mirrorless camera. I can't stress how important the GH1 is, before that camera there was zero cameras that shot an industry standard/broadcast standard or SMPTE standard for HD video.

They took so long to accept the phase detect autofocus, wich shows a trend to develop everything for their own and not to “benchmark” other’s good idea. Come on Panasonic, see what’s happening with Fuji x100v and Leica cameras,( see the trend?) you should have gx9 ii asap. Powerfull, photo centric ( with nice video capabilities), retro rangefinder style, small and light and better conection to smartphone to share content.
Olympus and Pentax had IBIS much earlier in their cameras. In fact, the Olympus E-5 announced in 2010 had IBIS. When Olympus started Micro Four Thirds with Panasonic, Olympus shipped EVERY single MFT camera they ever made, regardless if it was a consumer PEN or flagship OMD with IBIS while MOST Panasonic MFT cameras did not have IBIS for the longest time. The GH4 still didn't have IBIS. The G7 didn't have IBIS. Only the very last two generations of Panasonic's MFT camera's had IBIS when Olympus shipped IBIS from the very start in every MFT camera they ever made. Panasonic wasn't innovating here, it was lagging behind. It is somewhat funny accrediting Panasonic with praise of innovation for IBIS when in reality they were always behind on this with MFT. Also objectively, to this day the IBIS in Olympus cameras is still better than Panasonic's.
@@karikaru I am not so sure that full frame statement is still true. The Nikon Zf has image stabilization that is pretty much on par with my E-M1III with a Sync-IS lens, I tested them side by side. Also, Nikon implemented IBIS calibration to the focus point relative to where on the frame focus is - nobody else has that yet. I don't think Panasonic has a distinct advantage here anymore. And most improvements now rendering diminishing returns of investment as IBIS with up to 8 stops is hitting physical limits - as Olympus had already stated when they hit 8 stops being limited further "by the rotation of the Earth". Not sure if that is marketing or technically true.

@@discoverycamera I think it is context dependent, e.g. the angle of view and arc speed of the sensor movement. For example, on a narrow field of view (=longer focal length) the entire frame moves more or less at the same arc speed for IBIS to compensate, so for longer lenses this feature probably does less. But if you choose a focus point at the edge of the frame for a wide angle field of view (=short focal length) the frame would not be evenly balanced with IBIS - ever wonder why IBIS on wide angle lenses for stabilizing video results in wobble? This might help for that ONE focus point (at the expense of other image areas possible?). Not sure. I haven't used it long enough for an educated opinion. This is just how I think it might work.
True and generally at a very reasonable price point when compared to the other brands...canon tax and cripple hammer come to mind. The only honest fail was putting off PDAF for so long...and then trying to act like no one was asking for it with the gh6 when AF issues have literally been the biggest issue over the years with all previous generations for video.
What brings me into Lumix was the GH4, because it was one of the first consumer camera with 4K and excellent details in video. A real game changer. A bit later, the GH5 was launched and it was fantastic, excellent IBIS, excellent 4K, AF was and is still good enough with most of my lenses, again a true game changer. Then, Sony cames with the A7III, uncropped 4K full frame 25fps, better AF, better low light than the Lumix GH5, much better photo quality, but terrible rolling shutter and IBIS. In 2019/2020 Panasonic launched their S5 and S1. While these cameras had the best video quality of every cameras I owned (details and low light), the AF and IBIS were worse than the GH5. I think to be a game changer, the S5 and S1 should have had at least the same AF than the A7III. I don't speak about the GH6 because while the colors great, the AF was even worse than the GH5 for my uses. Finally, the S5II and S5IIX in 2023 come with much better AF and IBIS than the S5 and S1. IBIS is almost as good as the GH5 and AF only slightly worse than the A7IV. However video quality is a stepback compared to the S5 and S1. For me the last impressive Lumix camera was the GH5. I think Lumix can do the same with the S1II if this camera has the same image quality than the S5 and S1, but with the AF and IBIS of the S5II.
LUMIX is perfect for low budget filmmakers. I nearly bought the GH5 back in 2017 but wound up waiting for the a7siii in 2020 for that dual ISO in low light situations. How do you find grading color from Panasonic cameras?
Recently, after roughly 10 years of Panasonic(G7,G85,G95,EVA-1,S5) I decided to switch. Now got the setup running on Fujifilm. While I am happy with the new images, I do miss for me the thing Panasonic shines the most in and that is usability. Simple things like the pinch on the screen to check focus, waveforms, etc.

Everything you mention is true. It's also true that to this day Panasonic is the last selling company (while Olympus just doesn't...exist). AF the..they say!! You cannot for 10 or more years ... insist on a system (DFD) that simply does not ... work as it should work. The problem is that this particular company...TAKES WAY too long, eg where are the af improvements that were introduced with the g9ii? Why haven't they been provided with firmware, and on the s5ii/s5iix? Where are the new lenses?
They seem to have sped up releases in the last 2-3 years so maybe we will see a few new cameras but I say better late than never with PDAF. What lenses are you referring to?
Their stubborness on sticking with DFD casts a long shadow that they need to run clear of. Yes, they have PDAF now, but had they not been so stubborn, they could be focusing on other things now instead of catching up. I don't think it was a first in general, but they also had a 3D lens for MFT (H-FT012) that I thought was really unique. Didn't see you mention that.
Nobody knows if Panasonic was stubborn or if Sony or who ever holds the patents didn't sell them to Panasonic at a reasonable price. Companies, especially from Japan don't talk about this. So they always say we use DFD because we think it's the best solution. The will never say we have to use this mediocre AF system because Sony don't want us to build better cameras. This is how marketing works. It's the same with RAW video internal. It's pretty sure that most camera manufacturers would like to do this now and probably since a couple of years. It would be much better than the solutions over HDMI to special recorders. But we know that RED is holding some patents blocking the best solutions. What we don't know is why Nikon is now allowed to do it and others still don't talk about it. Has Nikon payed a lot? Has Nikon proof that the patent isn't valid and keep this behind closed doors to keep others out for a few more years? We will never get those internal information. We just can look at what the manufacturers come up with.

The issue is that Panasonic uses simply designed sensor so they can subcontractor them from different manufacturers. Nikon, Fuji, OM knows that Sony sensor department is the best so they simple use them. You will see that Panasonic in the future is the last one who will use Sony Global shutter technology the same that happen with masking PDAF pixels on image sensors. It has nothing to do with Sony not giving them technology but simply they want less complex meaning cheap sensor manufacturers.

Active cooling adds about $1000 to the price in Sony but Panasonic somehow manages to include it in the S5ii
