very informative, Dave. You could have eliminated the need for using Scruptress to fill in the holes if you had done a more thorough job of scanning yourself, moving the scanner vertically to cover under the chin and on top of the head.
I used the Skanect free version but I found that the STL export had a very visible mesh. I bought a PRO license and found that an export with 50,000 polygons in PRO results in a much better quality. Export the object size in millimeters gives an accurate object size in mm usable to create duplicates with a fair match to the original.
It's worth noting that the PRO version of Skanect that you are using costs $130, especially considering how much you stress that your scanner only costs $10.
this may help you if you are using the free version of skanet you can import the file in meshlabs and fix it up it would look almost the same as he did
watched the video and then watched again while I tried. Helped a lot. Have to get better with chair but not bad. Unfortuantely have to buy the Pro version to get higher faces than 5000
if you're printing on a dlp printer (a liquid resin printer like the anycubic photon) you want the detail and quality to be as high as possible. its not as important with fdm fillament printing because that process is usually pretty low detail

Not working though on the MSI Z170A pc I built. Good luck.
I was just browsing the web to find out if Skanect works for my type of scanning (on a rotary table) and found this video. This is a very nice and detailed video and worth watching all 27 minutes! I just ordered a used Kinect 360 for 20 EUR so I will see in a few days if this works 😀
YES! It took me a bit more than 27 minutes to install all software and make my first scan but with this video this was an easy job 👍 It will take me a few scans, hours or days to find the best scan quality but this is very promising.
See my reaction below. It may take a few tries to get a good scan but this is still fairly easy to do. I also tested an Occipital Structure sensor with Skanect. That one works faster, has less errors (so less scans before a good quality scan is made) but it is also way more expensive. For the occasional scan-for-fun use nothing beats the Kinect.
Ya I think there are companies based on that. But they have a bunch of cameras set up and take the image instantly. The kinect is a cheaper approach, and more difficult to get a kid to sit still for 2 minutes while you scan them.

So i would suggest trying to find the right drivers to download so that your laptop will recognize the device. Again, it's been a while, but i think the SDK software was the one that finally made the camera show up for me???? The only bad thing is that when you are done you have like 4 XBOX programs installed on your computer, taking up space, and you want to get rid of some, but aren't sure what are the ones that didn't work.
@@DaveWirth I did have the 2.0 SDK software for my windows 10 and it showed up on my other devices and kept playing the disconnecting sound every 5-10 seconds..
@@Arslan99j I don't know. I just remember i had to download like 4 drivers before it finally worked. ????
WOW/ Thanks so much. This is so much simpler. Way to kill the learning curve and get more people into it.
Nice video but I have a problem you may be able to help with. When I record using Skanet, the object I want is black but my backgrounds are colored (kinda of a rainbow effect). I tried using flat black or flat white back gounds but the same thing happens. Any ideas? Thanx ahead of time.
Never had that problem. One thing i did learn is about the size of the scan area. I used to do a 6x6 but it was way too big for a person. Now i only do 3'x3'. I found that it scans better and has more detail using the smaller area. But no, i've never had an issue with something not scanning.
@@DaveWirth I figured it out. I was too close to the scanner. Duh!
