I have been using an xbox 360 kinect and software called Kscan3D on windows to 3d scan and model items. 360 kinect cost me $25 AUD and the power adapter and usb lead costs $18 AUD but its no good for smaller objects like a matchbox car but brilliant at 3D scanning things like shoes and the OG xbox console all the way upto scanning people and furniture. I have scanned entire rooms of the house with it no probs. Just putting it out there as a cheap alternative for now until the price of scanners come down

You guys haven't seen Kiri Engine I guess. Get ready to be blown away. It gives you I think 3 scans a week for free and its pretty inexpensive in monthly cost if you need more scans. It can also process existing photos taken by any high end camera.
Have you tried out the DIY-route? I am looking into the project of openscan and asking myself if it is worth the time to print the parts or if the result is rubbish nontheless.
Went full DIY at start, bruned about 700EUR under it, getting better cameras, bearings, metal construction parts, months of wasted time just to get quite bad scan results + each scan took forever to make and process. 6+ hours on beefy computer just for scan automatic processing. Ofc I made relatively big scanner, up to 1m cube After months of sourcing parts, building, using all kinds of paid and free programs and tons of headache. I just went and bought decent scanner from Shining 3D. It did cost close to 2k (years ago). Scans take seconds instead of hours, has real good percision and I can just scan and send directly to printer, without any post-processing, which used to take hours too Saves about 10h a day at least per scan (scan time + post-processing)
@@marguskevinsunter Do you still know what software you used? Also I think that "years ago" is not what can be achieved today. But sad to hear you burning through money for no good result :/

Well shoot... 19:10 You just gave me a legitimately good reason to get a 3D scanner. I use custom orthotics in my shoes because I'm super flat-footed. That's kinda exiting and frustrating at the same time because I just bought the expensive X1-Carbon from Bambu Lab and after seeing Morley Kert's recent video, I kinda want to try making my own sandals. Can someone send me unlimited moneys plz??? *sigh*
@@thenextlayer I know that I *can* make money, but anything that I've tried to sell (mostly in person) has always just ended up going back into buying more filament. I'd like to make more money off of my 3 printers (X1C, CR 6 SE, and 3D Print Mill) but trying to learn the intricacies of these devices *while* turning a profit off of them has proven to be very difficult. I'm not even sure of the legality of selling most of the things I print because they're either downloaded from something like Printables or designed by me in Onshape on a free account.
I've been using 2 kinect sensor bars for 3d scanning. The quality is better than both these but it did require a lot of tinkering to them to work right. I'm surprised we don't have better and cheaper alternatives maybe the market isn't there yet.
@@thenextlayer Maybe I made it sound easier than it is. You have to do a lot to get it going and then it's not the greatest but better than the Creality.
Overall, either of the dedicated scanners are still cheaper than buying the iPhone if you aren't on the Apple platform already. Is the scanner app completely free, is it just a free trial or are most of the features blocked by a pay wall? If it's free, then maybe it'd be worth using to scan objects in an environment that is more scanner friendly and you could use a thin pedestal or tripod to help get the object further away from surfaces. I've not used an iPhone since the iPhone 3, but I know a few people that have them and would gladly scan things for me if it's viable.
(New to game development and can't code, but am trying to learn the basics by starting with the terrain) I want to make a game that looks realistic and with mostly 2D AutoCAD (versions 12 - 2008) under my belt I was hoping that a 3D scanner with blender might help. I don't want to use Assets from any Asset store, have compatibility issues and issues with possible copyright. I've been looking at the 3D scanners as a possible way to create my own assets. I was wondering if the revopoint also picks up and creates the textures? (Hoping to be able to scan and import plants, trees, rocks, sea shells, etc.) On a side note, is the liquid in the center of the sulfur pits: Sulfuric Acid?
I’m thinking of getting the revopoint, however I wanted to know if the software can take the scanned image and mirror image the scanned image. Since I want to replicate a car part that the part is made for the right side but need to make the left side one of it? Thank you
When you said "I know what everyone is wondering", I said, "Yeah, is he using sublimating spray to make his hair gray?" 🤣 Enjoyed the humor of this. One thing that I don't think was very clearly stated -- were you using the LIDAR or the photo mode with the phone? I think based on the fact that you called out the price difference it was probably the LIDAR, but I'm not sure.
They offered me a scanner to do some sponsored content, but changed their mind due to timelines. Tweet at them and let them know you want me to do a video still ;)
I have both. They both have their pros and cons. I have been using the Wale software for the lizard as they are the manufacturer of the lizard. It’s been about 90% out of 100. The Revo just had a new update and it’s had some really good scans, but the latest update has been trash. It’s a beta version so I’m not too concerned I still have the older version that works fine. I know these aren’t cheep but I also have the original creality CR scan and using it with the whale software has made me start using it again. I think if you take a little time with some of the newer software you can get decent scans out of either one. I think the hardware on both are fine. We’re going to have to wait for the software to catch up. Just a side note the Einscan which is close to a $1000. The software and the hardware both shine.
@@thenextlayer Yes anyone can use the software. The lizard is in it. To be honest I would keep both. They both have their strengths, but not enough overlap to keep just one.
Same company that makes this professional quality scanner makes a consumer grade scanner that I’m looking at called a einstar from what I have seenhere on you tube it looks intriguing. It’s plus minus 0.2mm you might want to check it out it’s at 1000
Bambu X1C comes with a lidar too... If they develop this functionality it would be another big leap forward. Don't know if it is good for the market have a company with that kind of monopolistic advantage.
@@SoddenVenus If the lidar is coupled to the printer head the x and y plane can go in to every angle of the object to get the full picture. The head could make a circle to simulate the turn table. Sadly, I heard that the "lidar" of the Bambu Lab it's not really a lidar. But the idea could be implemented anyway...
Great video, very informative, is there any way you can either change your microphone or something, it sounds like the audio is going between 5 and 7 back and forth lol
Thanks for the review. I have a question that I may have overlooked...is there a better color project to be scanned? Like a part being all white or gray? I see scanners don't like black. Thanks.
Hello everyone! Which one is the best for scanning objects Revopoint or Iphone 14 pro? We have 3d printers so We are want to buy cheap scanners to test.
Thanks for doing this. I do think the iPhone one will ultimately win and get better and better. the reason is that the cpu power is incredible and getting better in the iPhones. The hardware is set and consistent, so many developers can and will create software for it and things like clipping out unwanted objects should become very easy to do with the built in software over time. Thus having the device with you at all time, not having to paint stuff white, and getting constant hardware upgrades will cause it to "win". Even now there are multiple generations of iPhones with LiDar. I suspect this will become more common, even on lower end models over the years to come.
It would've been nice to see Polycam on Android vs iPhone. I use Polycam on Android with pretty great results, so whether or not these options are worth it for me really depends on if the printed results are really that much better.
Great video, but for real, Using an Iphone and a mac? you have to be used to software just not being compatible with your devices by now. you should buy a basic Lenovo laptop running windows just for your reviews to test the different version of the software on both.
@@thenextlayer lol, I don't mean to use or god forbid let your kids near. Just for basic testing of software that comes with products you review. I'm talking a 3-5 year old $150 craigslist purchase running something common like windows 10.The reason i suggest this is because it's normally an entirely different experience usability-wise. Most software that comes with maker products isn't made for Macs. It's adapted to work there.. which lets face it it rarely does well. Just reviewing the Mac software is like just reviewing the made -for-tv movie version of a series. sure they're about the same thing... but the quality just isn't the same. By not even mentioning the windows side of software you're cutting out a very large potential audience of subscribers.

Gotta point out, you *will* be biased toward something you receive for free versus something you pay for and also look more favorably on all of their products, even if the gift you are given is extremely small. It's why handing out small gifts at medical conferences by pharma companies is seen as either unethical, or in some places, completely illegal. Though you do acknowledge that it was free, which at least puts things on a more even field.

dude are you in the lizard group? tutorials should be inside, a lot of revo point users and lizard users there so far i think lizard is the go to, the software is indeed not intuitive but just a few tutorials you'll be scanning precise and detailed parts vs the revo. My revo cant even scan big parts unlike the lizard. But good to see your opinion about these products.
18:50 Ummmmm, no. That's TERRIBLE advice! I would never recommend someone buy a 3d printer, unless they intend on at least trying to learn to 3d model. A 3d printer can go from a trinket maker, to an actual useful tool for manufacturing impossible to find objects.
True but if simply wanting an stl or obj file to work with, Polycam cant produce the detail. Its simply masked with photographic quality texture (but yes... it looks awesome)
This has just been done to me by people I thought were friends and a family shining what looked like a purple light into my home after my nephew and his friend took “dimensions” and got me to ask for “holiday photos” and “song titles” . Thanks for the review. Very informative. Why not put the real cost of an iPhone? Not everyone is an apple Fanboi and many of use just have a cheap mobile phone that works, so would be getting a new iPhone just for this.

send the lizard to me and ill work with it. lol
Always helps if you bother to learn to use your tools before you pass yourself off as a worthwhile source of information.
Content on HUMAN BODY SCANS would be interesting. And comparison of some of the more commercial / prosumer options if you can get your hands on those for a review
Using Polycam and iPhone interchangeably? You are probably one of the THOSE people who use the word Baind-Aid® for Adhesive Bandages too, aren't you?
Great video! Thanks for sharing.
Am I not seeing it in the video list on your channel, or have you not done one for the camera accessories yet?
What are the fees for polycam?
Big props for the Lance Storm super kick !
I notice with the lizard, you were scanning at full brightness setting causing the preview window to show you a red image. Red is bad.....
I'm waiting for someone to develop an app to use the Meta Quest 3 as a scanner. The necessary hardware is there
Hello. Ferret, POP3 or Mole? What do you think have more detail and Accuracy. Thank you so much for the video.
I was most impressed by the Mole. Haven’t tried ferret
What's your opinion on 3DMakerPro's upcoming budget Mole 3D Scanner?
They haven’t sent it to me but hopefully they will.
@@thenextlayerEnded up biting the bullet and bought the luxury edition of the Mole.
Wish me luck 💀
Great and informative video. Thank you. i was a bit disappointed that you didn't really show photogrammetry or count the cost in buying an iPhone in the equation (I have an android ). Other than that excellent video that showed the good and bad points of both.
Photogrammetry scanner, take more time to process, also the depth and dimension are more accurate with these lidar type of scanners
@@TheEtbetween Doesnt the iPhone 14 Pro has a Lidar scanner too?
@@FerTechCH it have a LiDAR Scanner, however, it’s not designed for 3D scanning! It design more for depth and distance
LIDAR on the Carbon 3D Printer waiting to be used?
LOL I don't think it's the same... but also the LiDar didn't do well!
Hi. Great video. Just putting it out there as a cheap alternative for now until the price of scanners come down
Can you use poly cam if your iPhone 14 doesn’t have LiDAR
I think so
I have access to a 600k and 1 million dollar ct scanner. Reverse engineering is fun. I need a 3d printer though. I can use the scanners at my own whims. Any suggestions under 600$
Watch my recent reviews. The K1C was pretty good
@@thenextlayer cool, I think I could do a lot of fun things with my toys at work and a decent 3d printer. I reverse engineer products for a living. Not sure where to take it though. I need a side hustle.
Thanks for the video, can you recommend good 3d scan app for iPhone?
Ofc I made relatively big scanner, up to 1m cube
After months of sourcing parts, building, using all kinds of paid and free programs and tons of headache. I just went and bought decent scanner from Shining 3D. It did cost close to 2k (years ago). Scans take seconds instead of hours, has real good percision and I can just scan and send directly to printer, without any post-processing, which used to take hours too
Saves about 10h a day at least per scan (scan time + post-processing)
@@marguskevinsunter Do you still know what software you used?
Also I think that "years ago" is not what can be achieved today. But sad to hear you burning through money for no good result :/
@@Dierundeuhr that "years ago" was about 2 years ago. Most likely things have gotten better, haven't re-evaluated DIY route. Looking at scanner prices they have staid quite the same for past 2 years
As for software. I tried everything out there I could find. Went thro 10+ programs for sure, both paid and free. Most likely there have been advancements in that sector too, but I doupt it has been enuf..
Sounds like so much work!
*sigh*
You can use the printer to make money!!
Orthotics are a scam. Consider just not using them. It is outdated thinking.
I've been using 2 kinect sensor bars for 3d scanning. The quality is better than both these but it did require a lot of tinkering to them to work right. I'm surprised we don't have better and cheaper alternatives maybe the market isn't there yet.
Impressive that you got that working for you!
I love the direct and blunt review
(New to game development and can't code, but am trying to learn the basics by starting with the terrain) I want to make a game that looks realistic and with mostly 2D AutoCAD (versions 12 - 2008) under my belt I was hoping that a 3D scanner with blender might help. I don't want to use Assets from any Asset store, have compatibility issues and issues with possible copyright. I've been looking at the 3D scanners as a possible way to create my own assets. I was wondering if the revopoint also picks up and creates the textures? (Hoping to be able to scan and import plants, trees, rocks, sea shells, etc.)
On a side note, is the liquid in the center of the sulfur pits: Sulfuric Acid?
I'm looking forward to the Mole scanner
Mole scanner? Tell me more...
@@thenextlayerth-cam.com/video/dXMF3FH5Dew/w-d-xo.html
I’m thinking of getting the revopoint, however I wanted to know if the software can take the scanned image and mirror image the scanned image. Since I want to replicate a car part that the part is made for the right side but need to make the left side one of it? Thank you
You can use programs like meshmisxer to mirror an STL file
Why doesn't someone just make a scanner that is enclosed (like a box or something) and just does everything for you automatically?
Can u make a list of 5 or 10 items that would allow that scanner to pay for itself?
Like ur dads shoe soles ty so much!
What are you going to do with the creality scanner? Maybe give away
Be very interesting to see how these stack up against the 3DMakerPro Mole scanner
Wow ok thanks this is helpful. Can anyone use the Wale software? Maybe I won’t sell the CR-Scan… which one would you keep if you had to choose one?
@@thenextlayer Yes anyone can use the software. The lizard is in it. To be honest I would keep both. They both have their strengths, but not enough overlap to keep just one.
@@lorinrobbins7911 What exactly is the name of the software? I can’t find it
Wale software?
Same company that makes this professional quality scanner makes a consumer grade scanner that I’m looking at called a einstar from what I have seenhere on you tube it looks intriguing. It’s plus minus 0.2mm you might want to check it out it’s at 1000
No 3d maker mole scanner?
whating review polycam with iphone 13 or iphone 14
That "I don't use AnDrOid" was personal
Bambu X1C comes with a lidar too... If they develop this functionality it would be another big leap forward. Don't know if it is good for the market have a company with that kind of monopolistic advantage.
Interesting idea. What if they implemented a turn table function on a delta style printer with its own LiDAR 🤔
I’ll do my best
Thanks for the review. I have a question that I may have overlooked...is there a better color project to be scanned? Like a part being all white or gray? I see scanners don't like black. Thanks.
Hello everyone! Which one is the best for scanning objects Revopoint or Iphone 14 pro? We have 3d printers so We are want to buy cheap scanners to test.
Revopoint in my experience.
"Welcome to The Next Layer, where everything is 3D printed and points don't matter!". ;)
LOL Truth
Great video, but for real, Using an Iphone and a mac? you have to be used to software just not being compatible with your devices by now. you should buy a basic Lenovo laptop running windows just for your reviews to test the different version of the software on both.
HECK NO! No Microsoft products in my house ;)
Just for added information / correction. There are no LiDAR-capable Android phones available right now.
I just ordered the new scanner Creality came out with, hoping the software isn't hot garbage.
After scanning human faces with a 3D scanner, can a 3D resin printer be purchased immediately from the application?
What is best scanner for Pens? I need for find a way to scan pens. Is someone having experience on such scannings?
3DMakerPro has something coming out designed for very small details. I hope to test soon.
Good thing I still have the old Software for the CR-Scan Lizard, that works perfectly without any manual postprocessing. I haven´t tried the new software yet
Oh snap how can I get it?!!!
@@thenextlayer It was on the USB Stick that came with the scanner. But I just tried the new version and got similar results with it. It perfectly aligned 6 scans of a quite complex object using the turntable and repaired it so i could print it without any manual postprocessing
thank you for saving me money!
I truely hope the iphone 15 improves thier lidar a huge amount
Gotta point out, you *will* be biased toward something you receive for free versus something you pay for and also look more favorably on all of their products, even if the gift you are given is extremely small.
It's why handing out small gifts at medical conferences by pharma companies is seen as either unethical, or in some places, completely illegal. Though you do acknowledge that it was free, which at least puts things on a more even field.
I highly recommend Kiri engine over polycam cause Kiri engine has ai so you don't get holes in your scans
Yay, the analytics know I exist
There you are! Glad you’re here
Given the video was released a month ago I would have liked to hear about Revoscan 5 software. What is that apple scanner even doing in here I don't know, but thanks for the entertainment ;)
dude are you in the lizard group? tutorials should be inside, a lot of revo point users and lizard users there so far i think lizard is the go to, the software is indeed not intuitive but just a few tutorials you'll be scanning precise and detailed parts vs the revo. My revo cant even scan big parts unlike the lizard. But good to see your opinion about these products.
Wow, really? I'm not in the group... but what did I miss? I wonder what I did wrong...?
18:50 Ummmmm, no. That's TERRIBLE advice! I would never recommend someone buy a 3d printer, unless they intend on at least trying to learn to 3d model. A 3d printer can go from a trinket maker, to an actual useful tool for manufacturing impossible to find objects.
Agreed I guess.
why is revopoint so expensive😭😭😭😭
ולבי המצלמה שסרקת...אתה רוצה להגיד לי שזה הרזולוצייה הכי גבוהה שיכלת לסרוק? זה לא נסרק כמו במציאות אני רואה...
PolyCam seems to have much better quality if you use the photos option instead of the LiDAR option
True but if simply wanting an stl or obj file to work with, Polycam cant produce the detail. Its simply masked with photographic quality texture (but yes... it looks awesome)
At 12:40 you say the cost is $799/mo. 😅
This has just been done to me by people I thought were friends and a family shining what looked like a purple light into my home after my nephew and his friend took “dimensions” and got me to ask for “holiday photos” and “song titles” .
