3D scanning with a Kinect sensor - Skanect

- There's many 3D scanners around these days but most of them are quite expensive. If you want to be able to make a 3D printed copy of something then this XBOX Kinect based method will definitely do the job. The Skanect software is free as well if you can handle a polygon limit.

This is not the type of 3D scanner to take dimensionally accurate scans for engineering.
When you buy the sensor, don't forget to also get an AC adaptor!
Part 2 will cover cleaning up the mesh in Meshmixer and 3D printing.

Mmmm a patient wife......my wife says she is a workshop widow.......ahhh yes we do test them with all our junk and nuances.....
Look forward to more on 3D scanning tutorials.....never explored this aspect......I have both Router CNC and 3D printer so should look at this in more detail.

Workshop widow is an apt term. Next video is the follow up with cleaning the mesh and 3D printing.
I got mine for $6 AUD from Cex, which is a used electronics and dvd store. They always have a bunch of them in store. Also great for picking up used 360 controllers for cheap.

A little late to comment on this but what hardware were you using for the capture? Specifically, were you using the CPU or GPU and what specs was it (5-year-old laptop with no discrete GPU vs some octo-core monster with a dual 1080 cards)? Thanks for the great channel content!
Hi Tim, I'm on a getting on 'gaming laptop'. GTX 960M GPU so ok but nothing compared to a modern gaming pc.

would the v2 kinect for the xbox one yield better results? I can modify it or get the AC plug adapter to power it that's not problem but wondering 3d render quality wise?
Hello, I know these videos go back a few years but I just got this same set up and I am testing it.. I am basically holding the sensor myself, keeping in the red and bringing it around my head. I get this weird glob of an image. I watched your video and see you going up and down, her rotating in the chair and the image still managing to stay whole. What setting am I missing that is not tracking me correctly? or what am I doing wrong?

I used the ICP algorithm to merge cloud points, but there is a problem when extracting frames during RAM filling and closing the application immediately, your solution is to capture frames for model building process. Thanks for reading comments and it would be nice to hear your solution.
Looking at the age and sale of the Kinect is there something more modern that would be a good choice to replace it? You did a great job on the video and I have something in mind for a project. The thing is I need a little more detail. To compare with the facial bust, is there another scanner that would provide a little more detail in the face?
There are heaps of hand held scanners these days, I just don't have the use for one to justify the cost. Sorry I don't have more concrete info for you.

No, but I haven't tried anything different from what's in the video.

Indeed is does, but it has more character this way.

Can I use Skanect for Mac with an XBOX 360 Kinect? Website suggests I can.

What happens with the scale? Does it keep the actual size or scale it down once opened in Meshmixer? I want to make custom insoles but the foot scan needs to remain true to size.
As far as I know scale should be preserved.

How do you tell if the issue is the Kinect V2 or A/C adapter when connecting it to PC. Plugging into a 3.1 USB with Win 10 x64 and nothing recognizes the Kinect. Not sure how to tell if it is even on. Drivers and bios are up to date.

Hi after watching your video I bought a xbox 360 Kinect model 1414 off ebay, but it has come with a non standard USB plug that will not fit my USB port , exactly which model did you have that plugs into normal USB port ? thanks
I can't see any code like that on the sensor and the ebay listing is long gone. I had to buy the USB cable separately because my listing stated they didn't have it. Maybe yours is the same?

This program does not work at all with my kinect V2 of one, the 3 icons in the upper right corner are yellow.

Can you please show what the difference in scanning in pro from the free. Does it give you more detail if put on the highest setting. I was thinking of buying the pro version but won't if the detail isn't any better then the free.
Looking at their website it seems as if the export is what is limited in free. Therefore what you are seeing now is what PRO will give. There are clip on lenses you can get for Kinect 360 sensors that zoom the image. I'm curious if it would give better detail with Skanect.
I found an article on this guy who used the lens from reading glasses, the ones you can buy at the store with different magnifications and the free version of Skanect. It gave him a lot more detail then what he got without the lens. The only thing they said was that you would have to use a lens that is on the flat side. I think he used a 1.50 magnification but can't remember exactly.
I bought cheap magnified reading glasses for this once upon a time but decided it was too much trouble.
I do hear that with the new Kinect V.2 you get higher detail because of the better high res cam and sensor. All you have to do is get the adaptor to connect it to your pc and Microsoft builder which is on all windows 10 pc will detect it. But Microsoft is no longer going to be selling the scanner and the adaptor. It normally sales for $49 US, but people on eBay are robbing you by trying to charge like $200 and up just for the adaptor. Free skanect version only will save 5000 polygons. I get a good scan and then save it, ending up with an unrecognizable silhouette. 😢
It looks like Skanect and others only support V1. How can I identify the V1 devices on ebay?
I don't have a lot of knowledge on the xbox stuff, but would V1 be the xbox360 era and other versions the later ones? If so, it might have clear visual differences.

Oy.... the results here aren't much better than by using photogrammetry. But I'd like to make a point: 3d printing a 'mini you' is pretty lame. But putting a scan of a person into a 3d game could be pretty fun- as long as they are recognizable. But getting a good scan of a person is a lot harder to do than anyone here seems to understand. Scan is ruined if person moves a tiny bit, which they inevitably will.
Actually, moving the object is not ideal. You should move the Kinect.
The scans look like a zombie from resident evil...
