    I used to go with my husband who is a farrier to show heavy horses for work and showing. Im amazed at these small upright feet on such a large horse, its like wearing high heels. I see the sense of a crate but think tying up the feet could be done to offer more support and comfort, this way has got to prove painful and very uncomfortable so its not surprising Ive seen so many Belgians fighting not to go in them. Beautiful harness.

    That is a cool shoeing stock. The way the rear leg is strapped and cranked up.. awesome. The front foot rests... I've used the oak Yoder style stock which can be a pain in the butt. This sucker is very well designed. How about a link to the maker or plans?
    8/24/2015 Edit: Since posting this I've been modifying an oak Yoder style stock to have some of these Belgian features. When it's complete I'll post a link to pictures of it.
    3/18/2023 EDIT: Well, I did make those mods to the Yoder stock and they worked perfectly. I was then able to trim the hooves of two full size Belgian drafts for several years with no problem all by myself. But in 2020, the place I volunteered at, stopped their horse hay ride service and gave away the Belgians. They sold me the stock thankfully, but I haven't used it since.

      Cool. I saw a real old oxen stock, on a video. I understand that one needs a stock to work on oxen feet. Rockin J Farrier built one somewhat like this one.

    • @dkeith45
      @dkeith45 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lynnehuff9659 The main reason I found is ease. Trimming a normal size horse usually isn't too difficult if they try to pull their leg away from you, but any larger animal, like the Draft above or an oxen can really put a strain on your back. That's where the stock shines.

    also can someone tell me, how does the horses heals along with the bars (which I noticed he didn't take down), expand across the back of its foot. He didn't take the bars off because the foot can't expand anyway, not with metal shoes on it.

    The only thing I can see that I don't like about this farrier is how high he puts the nails in the hoof. Otherwise, I would say that he does a fairly good job of trimming. Working on these large Draft horses is different than working on a lighter, riding horse. They cannot get under the horse and hold the hoof and leg up and therefore have to depend on the stocks to help with that.

To my knowledge in France it's called a "Travail" or a "Chevaux Ferrer Travail". I'd like to know what it's called in other languages so I can do internet research to see what different types there might be in other countries. Help me of you can please, thx : )

      Safer if done so they r comfortable, my boy will need this as he's so heavy! I'm going to train him to lift his feet himself at some point, we'll both cause they r heavy! Try doing 4 of these, I'm normally knackered from picking out my Clyde's feet but he foes like to bare weight on 3 unless I push him off or get my bum and bk under him so he has some extra support also if the horse has an abscess this would help loads! As horses can't stand on 2 feet so when I didn't notice a abcess in its early stages I went to pick up his bk hoof and he kicked out and nearly knocked me out as he hit me right in the nose! The horse has a bum rest and the foot is tied so no metal pressure on top of foot just a strap holding it in place, if the horse is happy in one I bet any farrier shoeing or trimming them would really appreciate it lol though we dont use grinders to take off the metal nails, we use rasps and clippers

    that first song in the video I have not heard that song in a long while. a guy up the street has two belgians, a fjord and he has one of those contraptions in the pasture. he doesn't put shoes on tho, I think. personally I have come to despise shoes on horses (except in rare instances) they damage te foot with all those nails and dont allow the hooves to flex (a horse has five hearts as the saying goes) i hae to say the guy is calm and cool and the horse is too, imagine if the horse paniced being all enclosed and tied up like that, he guy seems to be so used to it is like just another la la la day. the horses is very pretty too.

    Why to put this burning horseshoe? Is this necessary?

    • @dawnmaclellan7831
      @dawnmaclellan7831 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Absolutely necessary? Probably not, however there are things achievable in this method that are harder to accomplish any other way. Horses feet are made up of closely compacted vertical hair like tubules of keratin. Searing seals these which provides some protection from drying out. But mostly searing helps to establish levels. Especially on a hoof that large., what looks level to the eye may not be in reality. To achieve a tight fit on the shoe and a balanced foot this is an efficient way of accomplishing this. It does not cause pain for the horse. There are no nerves in that specific area of the foot.

    My self I don't like to use shoeing stocks but I understand they are sometimes necessary. I have found they are normally used when there is a lack of training. (the horse not the human). Once the horse if comfortable with you shoeing him or her they are fine. By that I mean they stand without giving you any problems. Yes once in a while they need their foot back but overall it is better for the horse. That hoof knife that you hit with a hammer is crap. Use nippers they are much better.

    i think... what he does, shows he doesnt know much of horse's foot/hoof anatomy, sort of old school farrier way of trimming and shoeing... it all looks terrifying wrong..BUT he has been doing this probably most of his life, longer than many of the comenantors here live... respect to him for the work in this age... there are many out there doing the same, worse or better- my point is everyone does their best and they r all convinced they KNOW best... mostly because they dont wanna belive they paid their money to learn bullshit... these guys learnt it long time ago when knowledge about hooves was scarce... let them be. even though his work looks aweful or however u wanna call it, this horse is probably going to be fine...
    again... respect the guy at least for the age and strenght...

    Interesting to see how horseshoeing is done in countries other than America. We teach our horses to hold their feet up, we don't tie them up like this. Also different tools to actually do the trimming.

      +Judy Hart your horses are big like that one?

    • @JudyHart1
      @JudyHart1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not as big, but think it would be hard on them to have the hoof up for that long, just my opinion. I've got an old horse, 25, he has a hard time keeping his hoof up at all. That being said, he's not that big.

      +Judy Hart You are so right. Draft horses are very popular in Alaska because they can cope with the soft ground better and I saw a farrier shoe a horse that was 18-3. He had been shoed in stocks but the farrier took the extra hour to do it without and from then on the horse was easy to shoe.

      +Judy Hart They only use these 'stables' for heavy draft horses. NOrmally they work the same as in the US.

    why heat up the horse shoe?

    • @NLKippie
      @NLKippie 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +chumbrega2 So he can shape it to the horse's foot better. It is steel/iron after all, it'll only bend when it's hot enough.
      The reason why he presses the hot shoe to the foot is to see if it actually fits or not, by the scorch marks it leaves.
