This was a great video Akhi, but we have to agree to disagree on some points. There are key details regarding Somalia's history, particularly the factors leading to the war and its shift to socialism , that were not included. These pieces of the puzzle are important in understanding the broader context of the conflict and downfall of the government. The Arab World after attaining independence has had various phases or types of leaders such as Communist/Socialist, Monarchies or Military leaders. Egypt, Somalia, Iraq, Sudan, and Syria, Libya and South Yemen had socialist/communist military leaders. For example Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt, Sadam Hussein of Iraq, Hafez Al Asad of Syria, Siad Barre of Somalia, Jafar Numeyri of Sudan, Muamar Gadafi of Libya. So they were leaning more towards the Soviet Union and they were really aggressive and harsh on their internal opposition. There was also Western supported military leaders such as Hosni Mobarak of Egypt, Omar Al Bashir of Sudan and Zeinal Abadin Ben Ali of Tunisia. A historic pattern emerges here where nations demonstrating strong alignment with Western values and institutions tend to experience greater political stability and longevity. This is due to the disincentive for Western powers to destabilize their allies and the mutual benefits and strategic importance of the alliance. However, governments leaning towards the Soviet Union, especially during the final periods of Soviet weakness before its fall, have frequently experienced shorter lifespan and increased vulnerability to external and internal pressures. Somalia fell victim to poor political decisions and allies, geographic location, Judeo-Christian hegemony and tribal tensions. The vast majority of the Horn of Africa's land is home to the Somali people. The Somalis have historically clashed with the Ethiopian Empires, which sought to expand its influence. The Ethiopian Empire, with its long history and Christian identity, often viewed the Somali people with suspicion and hostility. The Somali people, have always fiercely resisted and quelled all Ethiopian expansionist ambitions, leading to centuries of conflict and hostility. The Ethiopians have expressed their animosity with their opportunistic alliances with any colonial power hostile to Islam. The aspect of Judeo-Christian hegemony is evident in history, particularly when Italy ceded the Ogaden Region/ Western Somalia to Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia. The collaboration between Italy and Ethiopia in this context was largely motivated by a shared interest in weakening Somalia, a Muslim country and the Muslim World at large. For Ethiopia, this situation also provided a long-awaited opportunity for revenge against Somalia, a nation that had persistently stopped and suppressed Ethiopian ambitions and expansionist efforts throughout history. Additionally, in the 1980s, Soviet backed President Mengistu provided financial support and military training to opposition militia groups including the USC and SSDF, against the Somali government. These militia groups played a crucial role in initiating the war against Siad Barre’s government, ultimately leading to the collapse of his regime. However, the power vacuum that followed gave rise to a devastating civil war among Somali clans, who, despite their shared bloodlines and familial connections, were torn apart. In this tragic civil war, even close kin were torn apart maternal uncles and nephews became enemies, neighbors betrayed each other in favor of clan loyalty, and classmates who had grown up together found themselves on opposing sides of the tribal battlefields. In conclusion, the collapse of Somalia was the result of collective failure by multiple parties, a war that could have been avoided if all sides had come together for dialogue to address their grievances. In later interviews, both the President and the leaders of the opposing militia groups expressed deep regret for their actions, admitting that they had failed the country and it's citizens and wishing they had done more to solve the problems and prevent its destruction.
19:10 He blasphemed against Surah Nisa as it contradicted the ‘Family Law’ policy he came up with, stating that this was something the Arabs came up with (He also made fun of an ayah by adding “Wa al-Jinni”). Those 10 scholars refuted him based on that and he executed them. He was very religiously repressive in other areas too. These cases should be a lesson to us as really no ideology can give us honour and hope except for Islam but it escapes me how some still don’t see this reality.
Those ''scholars'' you are referring to were just using Islam to spead anti government propaganda in order to overthrow Siad Barres government.. These rumors that they were scholars was proved to be false and it was revealed they were rebells and when questioned about Islam they could barely even read Al Fatiha.
He said that he would reject surah Nisah. And the very next day two fighter jets crashed. And before y’all get mad at me. He was from my tribe. And even I think the haram stuff destroyed Somalia. Reality is the mess however led to the more religious but poor Somalia of today. Which is a better foundation than communism. We would have tuned into North Korea. Umar ra told us 1400 years ago. If we take any honor in anything but islam. We're doomed. We somali took honor is random stuff like Qabil and that doomed us. He was just a product of those mistakes.
Do you think doing his time if you went into a household you would find the whole household to have memorized the Quran I don’t think so allah tells us those who recite the Quran are blessed Allah blessed our people with hardships so that we could return to him and get our deen back what Somalia is going are something all nations have went through.
Siyād Barre, may Allāh curse him, was an apostate kāfir. He erased parts of the qurʾān, abolished the sharīʿah, and slaughtered the scholars who spoke against his kufrī regime.
No need for you to curse him. Whatever he did, he will have to answer to Allah now. But I agree I have heard that he did do some of these things such as killing Muslim scholars that he disagrees with and that's such a shame and unfortunate disaster. May Allah bring peace to our Muslim countries.
@Ms.4ever33 That's not how islam works, buddy. We don't follow our feelings, we judge by the apparent and leave the rest to Allāh, as ʿUmar Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه famously stated, and the apparent of Siyād Barre was apostasy and hatred for Islām. If he was someone who fought against Islām and slaughtered its people, then we ask Allāh to curse him just like Abū Lahab and Abū Jahal. Keep your fluffy feel-good Islām to yourself.
@@Ms.4ever33That's not how islam works, we judge by the apparent and leave the rest to Allāh, and the apparent of Apostate Barre was hatred for Islām and it's people. I can guarantee you wouldn't say what you just commented to all the scholars he unjustly burnt alive and slaughtered. May Allāh curse him and hold him accountable.
Glad that your overall view of Barre is critical of the man himself and his (what I call) pseudo-Marxism. There are too many delusional Somalis that portray the man as great either because they share tribes, or because they see pictures of Muqdisho looking nice (it was nice before he got there!). No other qualifier, just we had ‘Mogadisco!’ By almost every metric the people of the country were struggling, majorly. Granted, we cannot blame Barre for all of those poor performances, but almost every geopolitical decision of his worsened them. He was the scourge of the scholars and students of knowledge, and we don’t need to talk about how many innocents he turned to the gun against. Yes, we can also point to the faults of the people who turned the gun against him in 1991, and the spiral of calamities that followed. But history is not always so remarkable as repeated, the man was ousted by the same instrument that he seized power with. His system collapsed into the post-1991 apocalypse, and he cannot be considered separately from what followed even if he was not a direct actor. Some of the delusional are unfortunately in these replies, and I suspect more will come.
Siad Barre was extremely tribalist before anything. He criminalized tribalism, and then only put Mareexan, Dhulbahanta and Ogaden (all members of the Daarod clan, like him) minions in his power structure and oppressed Somalis who did not belong to these clans, and particularly the Isaaq, which is why Somaliland exists today. His religious repression was secondary to his tribalist sentiments. If anyone complained about his nepotism, he would convict them of "tribalism"...while being exactly that. Somalia is still paying for his degeneracy and foundational corruption.

Somalia is not an exception, as part of its land was allocated to Ethiopia from Western colonialism, so the situation has been tense between the two parties for many years, Ethiopia's ambitions and threats to its neighbors are no less dangerous than Iran's threat to Sunni Islamic countries

Somalia was ruined because of impatient citizens who went against the sunnah of the prophet. Yes, Siad Barre had flaws as most humans do, but there are a lot of things he did good in Somalia as well. It's becoming more and more clear to me why the Prophet said to never go against the leaders and stay patient and make duaa instead. If they didn't overthrow him, we would be looking at a more prosperous Somalia , but truly Allah a'lam.
Although I agree with you, history has shown neither leaders nor the population can blamed for the decline of the country. If one has to back down before the doors of mayhem are opened, it is definitely the leaders.
@@Ms.4ever33 You can’t just simplify and generalise in this way. It was abundantly clear that his rule would collapse as his reign of terror, fear and religious persecution were untenable. Yes mistakes were made after he was exiled, but he was incredibly oppressive. The crimes that he committed (both against the Quran & Sunnah and the people) cannot just be dismissed as mere ‘flaws’.
When did the Prophet say don't go against the leaders? You're a typical backward tribalist Somali. The donkey dictator Siyaad Barre challenged ALLAH and met a humiliating death

Maxamed Cali Samatar the second man in command and the minister of defense during the 77 war was my father’s first cousin. Thank god I had the opportunity to sit down with him and have multiple conversations about him and Barre’s regime, I asked him what did he regret during his time in power, what things would you have done differently, and what would you recommend on which direction Somalia goes towards today. His answers shocked me. We are from the “lower caste” tribes of Somalia, the blacksmiths, the craftsmen. For a man of that origin to make to the highest echelon of government power is truly a remarkable story in it of itself. Till this day he is the highest ranked military commander in Somali history.
He chose him because of his clan, not in spite. MSB wanted to neutralise "major clans" so chose him. Either way, your clan isn't a reflection of your status, your piety is. Don't let anyone call you Madhibaan or place you on a social status based on clan, we are not Hindus who religiously stick to this. It is a system to know each other nothing more nothing less.

Former president Siad Barre has made Somalia the most powerful nation in Africa and one of the sulf sufficient. Whether he ruined in Somalia depends on who you ask and which clan he is.
@ then you must be very young. During the 70’s and 80’s Somalia has reached the status Self sufficient. It was even the second largest sugar exporting in the world after Brazil. Somalia was also one of the largest fish exporting country. During that period Somalia was more exporting than importing. Tribalism was panned. We were the only Islamic country with women fighter pilots after Turkey. Siad Barre was a patriotic man unlike corrupt ones today.
Most Somalis hate Siad and love Siad for clan reasons. Looking at it objectively, Communism was so bad for Somalia the economy did better during the civil war. The other day Somalia had $1BN in debt stolen by him forgiven by the Capitalist USA.
Somalia chose to rule with secularism in 1961, 8 years before barre came. He didn’t ruin it. He just kept the legacy alive of ruling the country with secularism.
Brother his name siad comes from the Arabic word to increase ziyaada, there is no “z” in Somali so it’s pronounced si-yaad close to how Abdullah azzam wrote
Apartment from the fact that he abrogated Islamic laws, literally headed the Somali Revolutionary Socialist Party, published a Somali Socialist Manifesto and was undeniably allied to Moscow (until the relationship soured), what else could possibly suggest that he was a Marxist Socialist. But, don't let solid objective facts interrupt a bad argument....
@SRC-Kacaan That's not how politics work, if you are in doubt - become an Ally to the LGBTQ community and try to justify your stance by insisting on your heterosexuality. Being an ally to an ideology does not require for you to follow all of the rules and principles. Saddam, Nasser and Asad were all Soviet and American allies at some point but they did things their own way, we wouldn't deny their alliance based solely on what they did or didn't do but based on their official sign-in for the ideology. Barre was literally the Chairman of the Socialist party in Somalia, what more evidence is necessary beyond that
@@Historyun Barre followed Islamic socialism. Islamic law in history was the closest to socialism out of all these ideologies. I see you must be a CIA bot 🤖
Lastly, I would say it was western manipulation of politics in the region that led to war with Ethiopia, agents and destabilizing forces, they're the ones with far more resources to do so and the scale of their global operations show this clearly, the Soviets were not going to back a government that was aligned with them in name only, but they were also going through their own stagnation and decline during the Brezhnev years... this requires far more discussion tbh and I did enjoy the video but there was a lot more that could he covered imho, I will look into this further, thank you

Most somalia look back fondly on the era of Siad Barre, it was the last time they were an actual country. likewise Egypt has declined since nasser. Not to say soclialism was right, it brought more strength to Muslims than what we currently have. We now have a capitalist system, scholars still write fatawa for government and teach the people a distorted version of Islam. difference is we are just weaker and poorer while they do it. the socialists governments of the Muslim world would of went to war for the Palestinians or at least provided military aid! now we just have pure treachery and barely even pretending to care!. Wallah what came after Siad Barre was worse!
I think the first part of your statement is wrong. Socialism/Marxism didnt give any muslim country any stability since the USSR was going to collapse eventually anyway. We see in countries like Pakistan for example, private companies that lead research, development and manufacture in the country were nationalised within a night by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. As a result those companies went bankrupt because the state was not in a position to carry that kind of load. So you had a Pakistan that was the first country in Asia to send a rocket into space and now it can't ecen process emeralds that are excavated from uts own soil. Ps. Im against capitalism and democracy as much as im againt communism.
@HamzaKhan-ue7ii yes at one time Pakistani rupee was higher in value than that of it's neighbour, today unfortunately because of the high corruption, Pakistani people are having to pay the price
in the very early seventies Siad Barre while travelling with his host Jomo Kenyatta accompanied by Haile Selassie in Mombasa towards state house, upon hearing the Adhan for Magrib, He immediately asked his host to stop the convoy so that he can perform his Salaat, the other two leaders waited for him for a while but later the host decided to continue the journey, but left behind a security detail with full protocols for his guest Siad Barre to finish his prayers & later join them at state house.

Why did Somalia go to war in 1977? Due to the disputed ogaden region which is majority somali being handed over to Ethopia by the west. Before this they Abyssinians always had adversarial views towards muslims in the HOA in general and Somalis specifically. I think its undeniable that the marxist-leninist principles Barre adopted for state building were not only wrong but far worse. He crossed the red line the kitab of allah. With that been said I think it would be incorrect to assume due to his ideological delusions that he didnt intend good for the country, i only say this because he left nothing behind its well known. I suspect the reason why some reminice about him is because current leaders and politicans have combined between Looting, stealing, selling out the country and being motivated by problematic ideologies. I will add, that many do defend him because at his time their was law and order and justice compared to this current period.
Astaghfarallah, I never knew about all this. American Muslim here. I have been more of a leftist economics kind of guy (-6.5 ~ or so or something left and like ~ -1.5 down on a political scale, so liberalist democratic socialist near fully socialist. I would characterize it as a kind of eco-scientific non-authoritarian but not anarchist, more "localist" and horizontalist) but I guess that's not too surprising considering my upbringing and surroundings which is a very liberal you know, environment especially now that we live in right (do as you wish etc. as long as...). Anyway, enough about myself, I didn't learn of Russia's foreign meddling in the Cold War, so this is very new to me. I've mostly been presented with the leftist (secular) viewpoints on these (dunya) matters. Been learning a lot since becoming Muslim, a lot of it can be summed up fairly quickly as follows: Oliver Stone's documentary series and book "The Untold History of the United States". Michael Hudson's "Superimperialism". Some of John Perkins's work as well ("Confessions of an Economic Hit Man", "Facing the Jaguar"). I'm just now getting into the book "After Tamerlane"; I'm surprised how small a role Islam has had in these dunya affairs post-caliphate. It's good to study history a bit like just reading the book After Tamerlane, you can get a much better sense of how fast the world moves and changes over time and the lack of awareness and the consequences therein of these changes of the people who live in those times. I'm not saying we or I am immune to this neither (smart phones and the internet for example in modern times are a huge deal, and generally, all this tech. And scientific progress) I would not want predict the future. I don't know but we live in dangerous very consequential times.
If it wasn't for channels like yours and many others, giving me knowledge and breadth of knowledge, I myself, would not at all be immune from propaganda or being "propagandized". Plus, my schooling, especially, college, and the internet, and books and movies, documentaires and T.V. etc. as well. Al hamdu lillah.
This would require much more discussion but the Soviets and the communist bloc were not expansionist and imperialists, this was the capitalist and financial oligarchic west, look at what they did immediately at the end of WW2, with Korea, Vietnam, supporting lsrael, their puppet shah in lran, etc., etc., the Soviets were responding to globalizing imperialist ambitions, and socialist/communist China is the most successful economy in the world today, it has not 'failed' or ended in any way, it is just getting started tbh
Overall, thanks for this video, I want to look into this chapter of history a bit deeper now, I'm not convinced the Soviets and the west were equally 'bad' here, but I will definitely look into this more 👍
Far more can be covered here, the 70s were already a period of confusion in the Communist world with the Sino-Soviet split being stoked by the US as well, Siad Barre could've been the East African Pol Pot most likely (backed by the US and China during these years of confusion), not Stalin imho ...

I disagree. As long as the history presented is accurate and well-researched, anyone can create videos like these. This brother is fair and there's no need for him to take sides. Additionally, having non-Somali historians analyze Somali history can be beneficial to us because they are not biased and do not belong to any tribes which could cloud their research if they did belong to one of the many tribes in Somalia.

The post-Cold War era has produced fewer great power conflicts and circumstances in which to defend vital US interests. yet US military interventions continued at higher rates.

😂Lies, Ethiopia conquered Ogaden in 1989.
Learn your deen people, learn your deen.
Knowledge is a shield. Knowledge is a light.
You should leave Islam
😂 salafi fake hell hole
This would require much more discussion but the Soviets and the communist bloc were not expansionist and imperialists, this was the capitalist and financial oligarchic west, look at what they did immediately at the end of WW2, with Korea, Vietnam, supporting lsrael, their puppet shah in lran, etc., etc., the Soviets were responding to globalizing imperialist ambitions, and socialist/communist China is the most successful economy in the world today, it has not 'failed' or ended in any way, it is just getting started tbh
They are state capitalists with a bit more state run companies
They have nothing to do with communism
AUN but he is one of the reason why today many of our kin deny their Arab lineage, he should of focused on Darood instead.
@@Mo1917toInfinitythis is an "extract" from a 5 hour live seminar. The broader context cannot be conveyed in 30 minutes on TH-cam, but it's a snippet of that themes and discussions in the study program
As for the Stalin, this purely an alteration and marketing technique for the algorithm. TH-cam is not an academic library, reach is based on easy and catchy titles and images, unfortunately.

Somalis aren't middle eastern, Black Africans who have large influence from the Middle east.
SAW brother, great video, just one correction about the scholars that he killed. He didn't burn them alive but rather shot them with firing squad while his supporters came to watch and cheer on. On that day, two airforce jets crashed in the middle of the city and burned the junction called fire "dabka" from that day onwards.
Wa Aleikum Salam. That is correct, however this narrative is being read directly from the source cited on screen, which is not hidden. In any case, the scholars were executed (by fire or firing squad, depending on which narrative is taken)
Siyad Barre was the only true leader for Somalis. Ever. He went east to get arms in the fight against Ethiopian occupation of the Somali State. He was willing to fight for the independence of the Somali people, and that is why he was removed from power. Ethiopians invoked their orthodox religion to get help from the Soviets in 1977. They said it was orthodox vs. Sunni. If you don't know the Russians are Orthodox. Historyun you have no Idea what you are talking about.
Disagreement is perfectly acceptable on these issues however everything you have mentioned can be said of Idi Amin, Saddam, Nasser, Khomenei and a long list of other controversial leaders of the Muslim world.
What makes Barre special and exceptional so that no criticism is allowed? And what are you challenging in particular, other than the fact that Barre wasn't praised and celebrated as the greatest man to have graced the soil of Somalia.
Your feedback and insights are welcome however vague personal attacks lead nowhere, doesn't address the issue at hand.
This was the Best president Somali had ever, Ask Ethiopia if u dont blv me, god bless him Mohamed Siyad Bare Allah ya rahma he was our Father

Northern part of the country cities like Hargaisa, Burco, and others where his army killed close 200,000 civilians.
Also people of Adaado where he tried to eradicate them to give land his own clan, during attempted eradication process close 20,000 to 35000 Civilians were murdered by regime's forces.
So to say he was good for all somalis or majority of them is misleading.
Also he play big role today's mistrust among society because everyone remembers how that dictator patryed the country.
I know you are from his clan that is why you are saying it you have probably been told so much propaganda the guy was a kafir what we need is an Islamic emirate like in Afghanistan the Somali tribalists will only understand and fear the sharia of Allah.

@Ugaas3 you are free to believe whatever you want, but the reality is that you have not answered my question
Siyad Bare did not ruin Somalia he. You do not outweigh the benefits Somali people received under his rule. What he has done for Somalia and how he ruled was remarkable. Please don't be biased. I thinks it’s better for Somalis to make videos on Somali history
Agreed. Let's extend that logic, they should also publish the videos only in the Somali language for Somali audiences. A great way to relegate your own community into obscurity and irrelevance.
No, we cover ALL history on this channel, this is not a racially segregated forum. We have had Somali Historians several times come on the channel and explain their own history, as a matter of fact.
