I’ve got the Apple TV 4K 2021 that I bought in July 2022. I’m absolutely in love with this product. Best investment I’ve made in terms of my viewing experience. If that's something you notice, it may be worth an upgrade. But for me since it still won't load my iTunes Library it's not worthwhile.
I'm surprised they updated again after 1 year and it's somewhat of a minor update, I remember when 5 years would go by without an update to an Apple TV or even an iMac or Mac Pro.

Turns out the QMS-VRR setting only stops the black screen switch when it comes to frame rate switching. Where did you get 1/3 smaller packaging at?. Lol 😂. It's actually the exact same amount of packaging, the new model box is just half as wide but twice as thick as the 2021 model.
I’m an Apple Arcade user and the added storage is great and I hope it will lead to a killer app on tvOS. That being said I’ll only pick this up after one of my 4K Apple TV’s brick or I get another TV in the house. If I were due for an upgrade I’d pick this up.
I think ima spend 90$ on the 2nd gen version. I think its good enough for me i literally just want a smooth device because my beautiful LG tv is painfully slow with apps, and even my ps5 lags when doing that kind of stuff. The ps5 slows to a CRAWL when you have a blu ray playing too its strange
I hope the QMS VRR also fixes that black screen that happens when I have the Match Frame Rate feature on. On my Sony OLED it’ll have a black screen for several long seconds when switching to different apps with different frame rates.
It should do, but the TV hardware has to support it too, and we’re likely to only start seeing that in 2023 models (starting with LG. Sony might not be till 2024 even)
It's a bit more involved than that. No TV supports QMS yet, as it is a HDMI 2.1 feature that not even LG have implemented yet. HDMI 2.1's QMS is a derivate of VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) but not the same. Here is the HDMI organization's description: "Quick Media Switching for movies and video uses the HDMI VRR mechanism to eliminate the blackout period when an HDMI Source device switches its video mode. As long as the resolution remains the same and only the frame rate changes, QMS will instantly switch between frame rates". Paired with the Match Frame Rate function, QMS will allow Apple TV 4K to seamlessly match frame rates for output in 23.976Hz, 24.00Hz, 50Hz, 60Hz etc. without any black screens (so-called HDMI bonk) or picture interruptions on the TV.
the games you play on your phone or iPad can also be played on the Apple TV on a much larger screen and also you can use your PS5 or xbox one s controller with the Apple TV. Since you own the games already you might as well try them out on a full size screen with a game console controller and you have Apple Arcade you have access to that library. (personally Apple Arcade isn't worth paying for but there are ways to get it for free).
Hey Brian - thanks for the review. Question regarding the thread: My currently Apple TV (2018 I believe) is connected to two HomePod Minis through my apartment wifi, which is a captive network (has a secondary login). Because of the network, I've had plenty of problems keeping the TV connected to the HomePods. Not too familiar with Thread, so I'm wondering if Thread will help with this issue since it sounds like it doesn't use wifi to connect the two?
One thing that has to be mentioned...if you use TH-cam TV, the only way to get 4K content is to have the new AppleTV 4K (2022). At least that's what I found out the hard way.
What I can’t understand is WHY didn’t Apple add continuity camera support for Apple TV and add a FaceTime app so we could use it like a big ass FaceTime device with PiP and SharePlay? We have family across the globe and this would be an awesome feature to be able to FaceTime on the living room tv! I think that the bits already are in place with the hardware already in. Apple silicon, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi. So I guess it’s just a software update to TVOS at this point. Just do it! I say! Anyone with me?
Remote needs direct line of sight to function properly. I’ve tried everything in the book, but if you have your Apple TV mounted to your tv bracket behind your tv, it will NOT work! Terrible design flaw from Apple. My Gen 1 Apple functions flawlessly in the same scenario. Don’t waste your money
I would swear the processing is a lot better on the 2022 version. I keep comparing it, just not convinced it’s worth the money, but it is better. Everything else is the same including the device “breaking” bug where the ATV app won’t load my large itunes library. When is Apple going to fix this crap? I can only view my library using the TV And Movies app. At some point Apple is going to get rid of those Apps. And the ATV App on other devices doesn’t include the iTunes extras
The “Thread” ability is bigger than people think. As well as the AirPods working seamlessly with it is big for us when I want to stay up watching tv. Worth imo for those.
Thinking of doing the same. I’d love to be able to have the ability to use my HomePods as TV speakers over ARC, definitely can’t do that on my 2015 one
Hey man I would like your stuff but you’re totally left out the fact that it has support for all the new digital format fields for the audio specifically Dolby digital plus plus
Apple TV has great image and app startup, however the sound sucks. Have to crank at least 10db on my HT and doesn’t sound as good as the XBox or the TV modes. I would be surprised if Apple finally fixed it.
Right now you aren’t going to notice a big difference between the A12 and A15 chips but it’s good future proofing. Might as well buy the 1 year newer model with a 3 year newer processor.
@@briantong when it’s only like an extra $20-30 yes…yes you can. Where did you get 1/3 smaller packaging at?. Lol 😂. It's actually the exact same amount of packaging, the new model box is just half as wide but twice as thick as the 2021 model.
Found out today, you can use your HomePod Minis as stereo speakers for cable with HDMI ARC. I use DIRECTV and have a Samsung 65 inch QLED tv.
Why is Brett Goldstein's bio in past tense? Dude is still alive.
I’m an Apple Arcade user and the added storage is great and I hope it will lead to a killer app on tvOS. That being said I’ll only pick this up after one of my 4K Apple TV’s brick or I get another TV in the house. If I were due for an upgrade I’d pick this up.
@Emmanuel ?
I have the the first gen 4K apple tv. I just got a LG C2 OLED. Is it work getting this 3rd gen 4K apple tv??
Yes. The 1st gen Apple tv 4k has raised blacks when playing dolby vision content. The 2nd and 3rd gen 4k boxes fixes it.
❤❤❤ BRIAN: IF you do not get a PRE-NEP you are CRAZY !!!! ❤❤❤
Profile switching that makes sense finger 🤞
Thanks for sharing. Blessings on your day 👍🏻
Are you sure you got an authentic version Brian? No apple logo eh? hmmmm
Horizon Chase 2 is an absolute must-play on Apple TV for racing game fans - and Fantasian is one of the best JRPGs out there period.
Sony might not be till 2024 even)
I have the 2021 and see no blank screen when changing frame rate, it’s seamless
@@zahirmulla6715 but do you have the match frame rate turned on? Every one got black screen delayed if Apple tv change format.
It will do that with the firmware uppdate. But you kneed a tv to support it to. And its only on new tv models
the games you play on your phone or iPad can also be played on the Apple TV on a much larger screen and also you can use your PS5 or xbox one s controller with the Apple TV. Since you own the games already you might as well try them out on a full size screen with a game console controller and you have Apple Arcade you have access to that library. (personally Apple Arcade isn't worth paying for but there are ways to get it for free).
I found Apple Arcade not worth it but if you want Apple Music and a larger cloud size just get Apple One. It works out to basically be free arcade
Yes, thread will help with this. There are many thread devices coming out that don’t even have wifi support because thread is more reliable.
@@PerpleXityCOD I appreciate the response, I’ll buy one & give it a shot. Thanks!
try upgrading the router to higher quality
I hope this pushes nVidia for Shield refresh!
Oh, I will definitely buy a new TV as well for QMS cause I can't wait one second while the TV change fps. 😅
Nice review. Not on my list as I have an Apple 4k tv already. Give me m2 macs
Brian Tong is back.
One thing that has to be mentioned...if you use TH-cam TV, the only way to get 4K content is to have the new AppleTV 4K (2022). At least that's what I found out the hard way.
Are you sure about that?
That’s what I found.
Too funny with the ASMR. We all get it, and secretly love it, but yeah, it's also very over done 🤣
Can the Apple TV install downloaded APKs like the Shield? Can it attach & play USB drives? Can it act as a Plex media server?
No it can’t
What I can’t understand is WHY didn’t Apple add continuity camera support for Apple TV and add a FaceTime app so we could use it like a big ass FaceTime device with PiP and SharePlay? We have family across the globe and this would be an awesome feature to be able to FaceTime on the living room tv! I think that the bits already are in place with the hardware already in. Apple silicon, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi. So I guess it’s just a software update to TVOS at this point. Just do it! I say! Anyone with me?
Will it wirelessly stream to apple speaker and sync up dialogue while watching movies?
Yes
This is awesome!😃
This guy is not real
I’m upgrading from the 2015 version. So it should be a big difference
Thinking of doing the same. I’d love to be able to have the ability to use my HomePods as TV speakers over ARC, definitely can’t do that on my 2015 one
I would like to see Apple concentrate on Music Sound quality. Maybe a ESS Saber DAC chip for 24 392 bit rate for music playback from Ethernet source.
I wish this year
would remove the control and change the program and all use of the control would be done in the program
Hey man I would like your stuff but you’re totally left out the fact that it has support for all the new digital format fields for the audio specifically Dolby digital plus plus
@EMMANUEL thanks for
@EMMANUEL prizes are fun
I thought HDR10+ was already supported on the 2021 model via the latest TVOS update?
Apple TV has great image and app startup, however the sound sucks. Have to crank at least 10db on my HT and doesn’t sound as good as the XBox or the TV modes. I would be surprised if Apple finally fixed it.
Right now you aren’t going to notice a big difference between the A12 and A15 chips but it’s good future proofing. Might as well buy the 1 year newer model with a 3 year newer processor.
Not everyone can spend the money and just say 'might as well'. That's not the norm when it comes to people buying tech.
@@briantong when it’s only like an extra $20-30 yes…yes you can. If someone can’t afford that minor bump in price then they aren’t buying an Apple TV in the first place lol
There’s no reason to buy the 2021 model, they are just gonna let them slowly dwindle in stock as uninformed buyers don’t realize there’s a difference outside of price.
I upgraded for my s95b so I could watch hdr 10+ but also get 4K hdr playback in the TH-cam app which the og atv 4K can’t do for some reason
Does the new Apple TV 4K output in bitstream? Also can the new device output Dolby True Audio and DTS Master Audio?
If you want to have a fast device and have the freedom to install what you want, then the best option is to buy a Fire TV Stick that is also cheaper.
I have an AppleTV HD and I’ve been waiting for a new one with faster graphics. I do believe the new ones can handle shared audio better too.
don't need the box for HDR10+ , it works on the Apple Tv Samsung apps
Will get mine
S
Siri works on this device? That would be a first for Apple
Soooo did the 2021 version not have thread support? Cause I thought it already had that lol
They took it away from the $129 base model versus the $149 model that has it.
I wish tech TH-camrs would stop calling these videos "reviews" and, instead, start calling them "comparisons"... I love B-Tong, but if you were new to the market looking for information about the Apple TV, this "review" would leave you wanting.
Imagine if you went to a new restaurant and the entire menu description for the chicken entree read: "Chicken... a little bit more saffron, same price as last week." 😂
So you'd prefer I do a review as if someone has never heard anything about it and go in-depth with features most people watching this are familiar with?
@@briantong I guess my issue is a semantic one; the content is good; it's just more of a comparison for people who are upgrading and not a review for people who may be new to the product and considering buying. Most people in the market for the new Apple TV are probably not upgrading. They are new to streaming boxes or switching from the more popular platforms like Roku or built-in smart TYV OSes.
If I searched on youtube for a review of a new car model and the entire focus was on how it was different from last year's model, I would need more information and context on whether to purchase.
I didn’t know Apple TV had a fan.
