Apple TV for me. I don’t need Plex cause I don’t pirate anymore. No ads is the NUMBER 1 feature. I have multiple and my Apple TV from 2017 is still smooth as butter even will all the updates.
Thanks Lon confirms my choice of having both Shield Pro and Apple 4K 128g streamer on my main TV. Up until last week Shield was necessary because Tablo was not on Apple. Shield though is still the best Android device. Streaming devices are still a must because my 2023 LG TV OS is so slow running apps. Put an Apple on my daughter’s LG OLED and she was happy she would no longer need to use LG apps. Bought a new Google TV streamer for my office tv but sent it back because it kept losing WIFI connection. Replaced it with an Apple.
I just switched from apple TV to Walmarts Onn 4k $50.00 Google TV with 28gb of storage, more ram and network 1gb rj45 port. The biggest reason was when software updates were needed because the server changed. Apple is the slowest one to get the changes implemented. So stuff will shut down for two or three weeks till there’s a patch or update on the program an android usually has it beforehand. Stuff like Plex, TH-cam products and some other major content providers. The extra free space allows much larger buffering, which was the biggest advantage to the Apple TV. I now have less buffering on the android stick than the Apple TV and I did compare this to Google TV and stick and found this to outperform Google‘s product also. It still does not have approval to support companies like Spectrum and other cable companies but most people doing this could care less about that.
I have Netflix and Amazon. It is very annoying that I have to search separately for a show. Then often the show, something from years ago requires additional payment. TH-cam is the most satisfying service I use.
The internal apps on my television work fine but you have a valid reason for getting a streaming device in that you can search across apps. 👍 I would think Roko would be better than Apple TV though in this regard.
Netflix has refused to play ball with the AppleTV since day one. They keep all their content siloed so you can't see it with the general Apple search. It's annoying and to me it actually reduces the value of their service. I'm on the fence about keeping it to be honest. One more price hike and I'm probably out. YMMV
The reason I use the AppleTV as my main streaming device is because it has the best UI of all devices. App focused like all streaming devices should be. And it is one of the most powerful device on the market as well.
What are you talking about ? The Nvidia shield TV is far more powerful than the Apple TV 4k . The Apple TV doesn't have expandable storage or even a USB ports . The Apple TV doesn't have Plex support and the remote on the Apple TV isn't even backlit
@@vineshjohn1630 OK? What does that have to do with anything I stated? I made only two points, none of which your response addressed. Let me repeat them again: 1) Apple has the simplest, easiest to use, and thus the best UI of any device, because it is is app focused. 2) It is one of the most powerful streaming devices on the market That was all I said. I didn't say thing about expanded storage, which isn't even an issue because even the smallest units have way more than enough storage. I didn't say anything about the remote (which backlighting is seldom an issue for most people, as just about no other streaming remote is backlit.) I didn't say anything about USB ports (which very few people need on their streaming device, especially since storage is plentiful.) I didn't say anything about Plex (which only a small percentage of the population uses.)

I don’t think that Netflix has to pay apple for TV app integration, it’s more about Netflix refusing to play ball in order to maintain as much control over the user experience as possible.
Apple actually “pays” the developer to integrate the TV app. They reduce the commission the developer pays when using IAP, however since Netflix doesn’t allow IAP anymore there is no value to them. Also implementing the TV app could allow Apple to know what Netflix shows are being watched. Netflix wouldn’t want Apple to know what is being watched and by how much.
@@5urg3xkind of stupid of Netflix though. Idk about others but I rarely open Netflix now, since everything else is integrated into the TV app. Only open Netflix if I hear of something good through social media or word of mouth (this is also becoming a rare occurrence).
I’m happy with the latest ATV model but if it upgrades to M-series chips then I’ll def purchase the new model and just pray every damn day that universal purchase games like RE4, Assassins Creed, Death Stranding, etc will also become available to play on ATV in addition to iPhone, iPad and Macs.
I use 3 Nvidia Shield Pros in each of my 3 home theaters and will hold out for the next newer, better version of the Nvidia Shield Pro. Fingers crossed we get one someday.🤞
I use mine as the daily driver too and also have the shield and LG TV. Haven’t really had many issues with Plex on the ATV though. The only annoyance is the pop-up side bar for TV+ that won’t let me remove the MLS icon in the middle of the menu. The MLS really has no relevance here in the UK.
Your use case is identical to mine. Shield for enthusiast side (Blueray remux in Plex etc). But the Apple TV 4K is a much nicer experiencer, doesn't slow down and lag and require starts like the Nvidia shield. So I'll typically use Apple TV 4K for streaming apps and Shield for Plex.
I would say it depends on what you want to watch, if you focus your time on Netflix and others streaming would say Apple, if you use mainly Plex Nvidia.
I’ve had all the Apple TVs except the very first one .Just wish the Apple TV could play hi res loseless on Apple Music natively. Hopefully the next one has the ability to.
It might be difficult to setup since it requires an Apple account. Luckily I had an ipad to help me sort it out. In my opinion Apple TV has no equal do the specs of the unit. It's basically a mini computer masquerading as a steamer. It's worth buying an inexpensive iPad to get it up and running.
After using a Shield TV for six years, I switched to an Apple TV 4k a couple years ago. The things that made me finally switch was no playback speed control on TH-cam on the Shield.
Have you tried the Infuse app on the Apple TV? In figuring out if I wanted to buy my own ATV i was reading Infuse is a better alternative to the native apple tv Plex app. Not sure what specific features from the Shield you need for Plex
As long as it can access the huge library of movies, shows, and music I've bought from iTunes over the years, Apple TV is the best choice without question.
Hi Lon, did you ever try to iPhone to display calibration feature they introduced a couple years back? If so does it work well? Or it’s just a gimmick? Thank you!
Great box but you do need an Android box like you do if you own a Roku as they are very proprietary and there are so many apps. not available on the Apple TV box.
Thanks for the video! I have an LG OLED and the Apple TV 4K. I love the user interface it has. However my issue comes when comparing the image of the Apple TV (streaming platforms) to those of the LG’s. For some reason I find the image of the LG’s streaming platforms a bit richer in color and sharpness than when viewing the same contents through the Apple TV. Using the same picture settings in both LG apps as Apple TV apps. I run my Apple TV with SDR matching contents set to ON. No sure if I’m the only one experiencing this. 😮
Seems to follow other Apple products. Works perfectly out of the box and well integrated with other Apple products. However if you want to do something more advanced then you may run into some issues.
I love my Apple TV 4K! I haven’t been able to use anything else since getting one! It’s the ONLY TV/streaming box that has a nothing-but-what-I-add interface (*NO ADS!!!*) and settings. Also it has apps no other does (like RadarScope). I enjoyed my Nvidia Shield TV 4K, but I just kept thinking, my Apple TV did this better… BUT I do miss the USB ports on the shield tv. Many reasons to pick up an Apple TV over anything else, and worth every penny. I would however recommend the Nvidia Shield TV 4K if someone has an Android phone as the Apple TV can be a pain without an IOS device (like typing/searching for example).
I feel your pain about Below Deck. FireStick Apple TV app lets you choose user when you open the app. I wish Apple TV 4k had the option in settings to allow you to choose user when you turn on the Apple TV. Is the plex apple tv app ever going to allow you to pass uncompressed audio through the Apple TV? Continue to use shield for the same reason you do.
It's hilarious companies like Roku STILL include just a 100Mb Ethernet port on their 2024 'Ultra' devices. Not even 1Gig, which has been the standard in home equipment for decades. Still rocking the OG Shield, but it is definitely showing its age.
I need to correct you here, Lon. The Shield is not the only game in town, nor is it the best way to play "all the modes" of video "the same way" one could as with a disc player. Specifically, it cannot play the FEL layer of Dolby Vision Profile 7. One of the few devices that can is the Ugoos AM6B+ running CoreELEC. If you don't care about that and just need something to stream from Plex, a newer box from Zidoo or the like would be much better choice than something as old as the Shield at this point.
Everything from @2:16 through @2:28 is literally false. There is nothing overly technical about the statement “the same way I would be able to do on a disc player”. This is not true and misleading. He is the supposed expert yet he has an incomplete understanding of the topic, his advice is outdated, and all it would take is a quick search of Reddit to learn. If his target audience here is enthusiasts, as he proclaims, they will by definition care about such details and deserve better.
4:44 huh, i actually never knew that apple was the ONLY device to natively NOT have ads on the homescreen. 8:26 amazon also has that only on their app though, along with google
Only down side for AppleTV is no Native 4:3 for the menu system for those that still want to use CRT. It will switch once the media is playing if the media is 4:3 to startwith.
Please Plex, Plex Photos for Apple TV!! Apple TV just works, integrates great with your iPhone for even better ease of use. Shield box too should be partnered along side it I agree with that one!
I used Apple TV, bcz my wife can use it without problem such as TH-cam app search typing with iPhone. Always have remote on hand since the iPhone can be the remote.
I have four (4) Nvidia Shield TV units and they all perform fast and smooth, I even do maintence every 6-8 months by tearing it down and cleaning the fan and reapplying new thermal paste on the cpu.
There is no overheating with the apple TV. Thing is the latest apple TV has a fanless design and a metal body. Hence when it get warm, thats by design as that is the way how it dissipates heat.
It was for me until Apple ruined the Audio with TV OS 18. UPDATE: For those that don’t know what I’m talking about, TV OS 18 made DD 5.1 unusable. I know it’s not my receiver because I plugged in my 3rd gen Firecube (using the same HDMI cable and in the same HDMI port) and it it used DD 5.1 with no problem. I know it’s an issue with the update because I looked it up online and saw a topic about this on the Apple forums mentioning the same issue. I hope Apple releases 18.0.1 fixing this issue.
I love the ATV for its smooth operation, lack of ads, and integration with other Apple devices. However, I wish certain streaming services would utilize all of the ATVs features. The Peacock app does not support Match Dynamic Range on the ATV. The Fox Sports app doesn’t support HDR at all on the ATV. For MLB playoffs I have to use my Google TV internal apps or my FireTV Stick 4K Max to get the HDR benefit on Fox Sports. Also, annoying that Netflix won’t support Up Next n the ATV.
Been a Roku user since 2012, but switched to Apple TV back around 2018 or so. Between the awful remote and glitchy OS, didn't like it and the only time I ever used it was to play video games (which I do miss.) Roku still does anything I need to do when watching TV, so I can't imagine ever going back to ATV. If I did have a complaint with Roku is they need to use faster chips, as the interface can lag here and there.
It cannot be overstated how horrible the old Apple TV remote is. The newest one is absolutely fantastic, and the even older ones are perfectly fine. But there was a couple years there where they were shipping a ridiculously stupid piece of garbage - really I can’t tell you how much I hate that stupid remote. I can’t personally complain about the OS, as everything has been absolutely rock solid for me. But god do I hate that remote.
I stopped using my shield after android added ads on the home page, and Nvidia stopped native support on gamestream. Moonlight is better anyway and it runs on apple

The movies audio is always out of sync no matter what setting I use and the picture is always skippy/jumpy and doesn’t look all that great. Idk if this is just me but yeah it’s been a complete nightmare
Yes there is, but it is not the best at the moment. A lot of Plex users at the moment are using Infuse for this (you still can connect your Plex server)
Apple TV 4K is all good until you start streaming from the Plex. The A/V sync problem from a very long time that Apple has not solved it yet. So I either use the Chromecast with Google TV or nVidia Shield for Plex.
I use a Firestick as you have a web browser, and thus can stream movies and tv shows for free on 3rd party websites. Haha. I might would use the Apple TV if it had Safari web browser. I own no other apple devices...bought the last gen apple 4k tv 32 GB after I picked it up on sale for 99 bucks...no ads on the homescreen is a game changer. It's very snappy and runs with my LG c2 remote. I still own a 2017 nvidea shield. But it gets very little use now.
Apple TV for me. I don’t need Plex cause I don’t pirate anymore. No ads is the NUMBER 1 feature. I have multiple and my Apple TV from 2017 is still smooth as butter even will all the updates.
The Apple TV 4K is really great. Fingers crossed for an M series chip someday.
I use my Apple TV every single day. Works great. If Nvidia ever updates the Shield TV I may get it but it'll sit next to my Apple TV that's for sure!
Me too ! I use the shield mainly for dts-x which Apple TV can’t do yet but the Apple TV experience is all round better
Apple TV is the best, I have the ethernet one in the living room and the base in the bedroom and they both work flawlessly.
I would think Roko would be better than Apple TV though in this regard.
Netflix has refused to play ball with the AppleTV since day one. They keep all their content siloed so you can't see it with the general Apple search. It's annoying and to me it actually reduces the value of their service. I'm on the fence about keeping it to be honest. One more price hike and I'm probably out. YMMV
I would get the Apple TV but I don’t even know Siri, and my mom told me never talk to strangers. 😂
Let me repeat them again:
1) Apple has the simplest, easiest to use, and thus the best UI of any device, because it is is app focused.
2) It is one of the most powerful streaming devices on the market
That was all I said.
I didn't say thing about expanded storage, which isn't even an issue because even the smallest units have way more than enough storage.
I didn't say anything about the remote (which backlighting is seldom an issue for most people, as just about no other streaming remote is backlit.)
I didn't say anything about USB ports (which very few people need on their streaming device, especially since storage is plentiful.)
I didn't say anything about Plex (which only a small percentage of the population uses.)
@@vineshjohn1630 appleTV does not have Plex?
@@SkepticCyclist use Projectivy as your launcher on the Shield it will put even apple to shame and the Dolby vision support on Apple is a joke
In what way do you justify Apple TV 4K as more powerful it doesn't have anything over the Shield TV
Yes if 128 Gb is plentiful according to you not by today's standards I currently have 6TB with my Shield at the moment
A backlit remote is a premium service something which is not provided by all in this day and age
@@davidrasoThey don’t want to give Apple (who own a competitive service, Apple TV plus) the data for what shows are being watched etc
The Nvidia Shield just got a second hotfix today that fixes the framerate switching which is still manual on many apps but now works correctly.
I’m debating on either getting the Apple 4k box or Nvidia Shield pro 2019
I would say it depends on what you want to watch, if you focus your time on Netflix and others streaming would say Apple, if you use mainly Plex Nvidia.
@@andreaciccarello main thing for me is Plex. I have a Plex server, but I’m concerned how long the apps will be updated on the shield, being its age
@@Apollopayne25 I think that this Is not a real problem. The first shield was released in 2015 and is still supported
I’ve had all the Apple TVs except the very first one .Just wish the Apple TV could play hi res loseless on Apple Music natively. Hopefully the next one has the ability to.
Is it worth buying apple tv if I don't have any other apple products?
It might be difficult to setup since it requires an Apple account.
Luckily I had an ipad to help me sort it out.
In my opinion Apple TV has no equal do the specs of the unit. It's basically a mini computer masquerading as a steamer.
It's worth buying an inexpensive iPad to get it up and running.
Thanks
After using a Shield TV for six years, I switched to an Apple TV 4k a couple years ago. The things that made me finally switch was no playback speed control on TH-cam on the Shield.
Have you tried the Infuse app on the Apple TV? In figuring out if I wanted to buy my own ATV i was reading Infuse is a better alternative to the native apple tv Plex app. Not sure what specific features from the Shield you need for Plex
i use infuse for 4k stuff and plex app for everything else
As long as it can access the huge library of movies, shows, and music I've bought from iTunes over the years, Apple TV is the best choice without question.
Have Apple TV and is best device ever brought. Also have LG TV from 2015 but all of the apps on tv still working. Would try resetting your TV.
Hi Lon, did you ever try to iPhone to display calibration feature they introduced a couple years back? If so does it work well? Or it’s just a gimmick? Thank you!
I personally had to keep Match dynamic range and match frame rate off because my inputs would switch on my TCL when watching TH-cam
Great box but you do need an Android box like you do if you own a Roku as they are very proprietary and there are so many apps. not available on the Apple TV box.
I use Apple TV 4k and I've never had any issues with it playing anything through plex.
Only if Apple TV can do TrueHD Atmos and DTS-X passthrough 😢
Thanks for the video!
I have an LG OLED and the Apple TV 4K. I love the user interface it has. However my issue comes when comparing the image of the Apple TV (streaming platforms) to those of the LG’s. For some reason I find the image of the LG’s streaming platforms a bit richer in color and sharpness than when viewing the same contents through the Apple TV.
Using the same picture settings in both LG apps as Apple TV apps. I run my Apple TV with SDR matching contents set to ON.
No sure if I’m the only one experiencing this. 😮
Try calibrating the apple TV's display using an iphone
If you told Siri “play start trek prodigy on Netflix” would it open Netflix or would it still just show you the purchase page?
I feel your pain about Below Deck. FireStick Apple TV app lets you choose user when you open the app. I wish Apple TV 4k had the option in settings to allow you to choose user when you turn on the Apple TV. Is the plex apple tv app ever going to allow you to pass uncompressed audio through the Apple TV? Continue to use shield for the same reason you do.
apps only mode on android tv for the win!! but yeah Apple TV and Nvidia shield way more powerful for enthusiasts
See @ 1:55
Everything from @2:16 through @2:28 is literally false.
Shout out to the ugoos am6b plus with Coreelec. The only streaming that can play all Dolby Vision profiles flawlessly.
REALLY AMAZING EXPLANATION
Only down side for AppleTV is no Native 4:3 for the menu system for those that still want to use CRT. It will switch once the media is playing if the media is 4:3 to startwith.
Too bad it still doesn't do HDMI audio pass through. If they added that it would be killer
1 thing the apple should have is a browser like the Amazon firestick
My only knock against apple tv is it seems to have limited options for good iptv players.
Please Plex, Plex Photos for Apple TV!! Apple TV just works, integrates great with your iPhone for even better ease of use. Shield box too should be partnered along side it I agree with that one!
Can you split screen and watch live tv from say Hulu to do so with this box?
great video very informative
Great presentation!
I use Rokus with a pi hole so I don’t see any ads
The Shield seems to work better on WiFi than it does on Ethernet for some strange reason.
wake me up when it gets a live tv guide.
I sent mine back. Didn’t see the benefit. Fwiw I do have a new tv and the apps and google software is fast and easy to use.
I could definitely see that but some apps are just better on the Apple TV i forget but I don’t think you can get the music app in google tv
I used Apple TV, bcz my wife can use it without problem such as TH-cam app search typing with iPhone. Always have remote on hand since the iPhone can be the remote.
Universal search won’t take you to titles on Netflix because Netflix won’t allow it unfortunately.
Shield is Another reason Nvidia needs to spin off all the non-AI stuff.
Everyone works better on the Apple TV. I sold my Nvidia Shield because it's really slowed down over the last year or so
I have four (4) Nvidia Shield TV units and they all perform fast and smooth, I even do maintence every 6-8 months by tearing it down and cleaning the fan and reapplying new thermal paste on the cpu.
Think they'll ever support DTS???
Do you have any overheating issues with Apple TV? Because many people complain, thank you
There is no overheating with the apple TV. Thing is the latest apple TV has a fanless design and a metal body. Hence when it get warm, thats by design as that is the way how it dissipates heat.
@ Thank you, indeed I tested it on TH-cam and Netflix and it doesn’t get warm Not games yet .
i have both of those , only use the sheild for plex .......
AppleTV could also be the preeminent music streamer if they added back a separate audio out and stopped the 48khz resampling
I’m still mad that the Nvidia Shield now has adds on the home menu! 😠
Love it. My favorite too.
I stopped using my shield after android added ads on the home page, and Nvidia stopped native support on gamestream. Moonlight is better anyway and it runs on apple
use a launcher
I have a love hate relationship with the Apple TV box I have it’s the latest one and I use plex to stream my movies and tv shows and this has been a complete pain in the ass. The movies audio is always out of sync no matter what setting I use and the picture is always skippy/jumpy and doesn’t look all that great. Idk if this is just me but yeah it’s been a complete nightmare
Is there not a Plex app on Apple TV?
Yes there is, but it is not the best at the moment. A lot of Plex users at the moment are using Infuse for this (you still can connect your Plex server)
There is but it doesn’t support lossless audio or Dolby vision
@@LonSeidman Ahhh that’s a shame!
@@LonSeidman You can use the Infuse App instead. It doesn’t do lossless. But it does do Dolby Vision and Atmos.
Apple TV 4K is all good until you start streaming from the Plex. The A/V sync problem from a very long time that Apple has not solved it yet. So I either use the Chromecast with Google TV or nVidia Shield for Plex.
Try Infuse on the Apple TV. It connects to the Plex background, but it can read formats that the Plex app would have to transcode.
I use a Firestick as you have a web browser, and thus can stream movies and tv shows for free on 3rd party websites. Haha. I might would use the Apple TV if it had Safari web browser. Though I think I've read of some people using an Apple mini computer as their Apple TV to have a browser, but I don't have one to test.
So i need a Sheild / apple tv streamer hybird with sideloading.
Has it solved audio issue for true hd 7.1 lossless media from last year??
nope that's why I still use the shield as mentioned
I saw a Zinwell device and am wondering if it's ok
Thanks
Zinwell tv tuner or tv box ?
@LonSeidman the Zinwell box, and thank you for responding. I appreciate your advice.
Shield for my Home Cinema for Remux 4K via Plex.
