  • A quick and easy way to align your rotary. Just put a piece of tap in the bottom and draw a line on it. Use the line to align your rotary. Fast and easy. The video shows the details

I put my rotary on cement backerboard that has 1in grid. Just line up one long side with the grid lines and you are all set.

Some don't have everything mounted or a grid on their backboard. This is more for the hobby user and weekend warrior.

@@viperdesigned I agree and it is a good way you showed how to do it with no grid no lines. The other reason I mentioned it was after seeing all the fires happen in the xtool group, if you use backerboard as your spoilboard your not going to start a fire and or burn through your spoilboard. You can hit the backerboard with the laser all day long and it will not catch on fire. Probably one of the safest materials you can use as a spoilboard.

@@CraneStudioImagingPhotography The fires lately are making me a little nervous as well. Working on my new enclosure and it's not exactly fire proof. It's an antique roll top desk. I'll have detectors and a suppression ball hanging. I don't leave mine unattended either.

anyone have an issue with the rotary tool when in the most opened slot and rollers rotate counterclockwise that the adjustable roller pulls out of the detent? when rotating clockwise it stays in the detent. sorry for asking this question here but on other sites and forums i didnt have any response and i was hoping you had some insight. thanks in advance.

English boy.. english! lol I'm a simple old guy. Can you explain that a little better for me? I have mine in the widest position and it is working fine for me.

@@viperdesigned don't know how to explain it any better. when the adjustable roller is placed in it's widest open slot, and the rollers rotate toward the motor, that adjustable roller wants to be pulled up and out of the detent and towards the motor. everything works normal when the rollers rotate the other direction which is away from the motor. i finally got a reply from xtool, but have not had the time to look into as of now. i'll figure it out, appreciate it.

@@pauld7332 Let me know what happens. Maybe a short video would help me. I have moved mine all over and if you don't lift the end of the roller up right it does fall into a wrong place. Not sure how to describe that.. lol

@@viperdesigned I received a reply from the facebook xtool d1 crowd. the issue is; my adjustable roller is put together wrong. on the end that gets screwed down, the silver circular (bearing) is installed on the outside of that mount bracket and needs to be removed and placed on the inside of that bracket between the bracket and the roller. it would be easier to show in pics but I'm not sure how to do that with youtube. thanks.

@@pauld7332 I saw that and was going to jump in but they had it handled. The photo helped. I have things posted in that group and on my website you might like. Search Doug Brown in the group :) vipervisuals.net/laser/

Even better than a pencil line, use the roller itself and the red X to align. I do believe the more accurate the alignment, the better the result. Good idea though.

    • @viperdesigned

That will work also. I like this because the head is centered on the piece at the same time. Don't have to move anything

OK. Let's extreme this. Say you put the pencil line on the tape over to one side by the rollers. That would tell you that the rotary is parallel with the x axis but whatever you put in there won't be the center of the cylinder. If you use micrometers to get the pencil line EXACTLY in the middle of the rollers then you line it up with the cross hairs, you now have it parallel with the X axis AND you know what whatever cylinder you put in there is going to be aligned with the highest point dead center also and the focus won't be one side or the other of the optimum. Does this make sense?

If you are using a micrometer on a cup, you are way over thinking this. I put the pencil line in the center so I don't have to realign the gantry at all until I'm done. Move the head off the end and change out the cup. Set my top height and it's ready to go. Can do a box full in no time.

@@viperdesigned I was talking about using the micrometers one time to get the alignment line dead in the center. I enjoy your videos!!

@@JLP75766 Thank you! For anything else, I use the edge of the piece for an alignment guide. I learned a long time ago doing signs that center isn't always center. You can measure it and it's spot on, but it looks wrong. I learned to go with the visual alignment on a lot of things. The ideal way is to put a cup in the rotary and find top center. Take the cup out and thats the spot for the line. :)
