    a "snub nose" gun
    in tanks or artillerey, a shorter barrel usually indicates a gun of lower exit velocity, able to more easily lob shells over ineterveining obstacles, and more likely in ww2 to be firing high explosives in an anti infantry role
    longer guns are more likely higher velocity, firing solid shot and intended to destroy armoured targets, shells fired at much faster, flatter trajectories
    note however many tanks had a mix of ammo types whatever the main gun happened to be best at

    i actually have two large books on armoured trains. those are the Steyr schweren Schienenpanzerspahzug (literally heavy armoured scout train) each unit is actually self-propelled and you could operate each car separately from the others. they were used as their mouthful of a name implies to patrol section of railroad and keep away partisans. main armament was the by then obsolete short barreld panzer iv turret and some MGs for the artilery car, the command version had the radia antenna (the huge frame round the turret) though irl the command car had a fixed superstructure instead of a turret with firng and bservation ports.
    armoured trains where often used in formations called a Rake where an self-roppeled armoured car (often unarmored) would go several hundred meters ahead of a normal train in especially dangerous areas for reconnaissance to detect mines sabatoge or run off sabotoeurs. the problem the Nazis had was they never had anywhere near enough of these (unlike the soviets) to patrol the countlress thousands of miles of railroad they had captured. plus the partiasns tyically aimed their activities at the axis forces. anti-aircraft trains became common on both sides as the primary danger to your trains was from air attack and not ground actions as mamy people often think. tansk often didn't get close enough to armored trains as they were able to usually out run them outshot them or both especially in the early war andusaully where not found ON the front line outsdoe of desperate situations. typically they provided artillery support functioned as mobile guarissonmuch like a warhip would.
    they could of course also be rapidly moved to shore up AA defences in any area required which was a big advantage for your flak units.

    Diplex, afaik they used 37mm because it converts to 1.5" in imperial units and again afaik yes snub nose is correct for guns and rifles (there's a difference!) of the calibre used on those trains. The Germans even nicknamed the short barrel (I'm British and have never heard of them being called anything but barrels /shrug) versions 'stubbies' during WWII.

    German standard gauge rails were 1435mm where as Russian rails were standard 1524mm. I believe the Germans laid something like 9000 miles of track in Russia during the invasion but couldn't convert lines fast enough to keep up with the invading force. Cool video man.

  • @truemisto
    @truemisto 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    you have probably been told this already.
    when the cannon barrel is that short it is probably called a howitzer or mortar. meant for shooting high explosive shells over a medium to short distance to hurt infantry and buildings, mostly, but may have some limited ap ability if firing an ap shell, or if it is high enough caliber may destroy enemy armor through the power of sheer explosive force of a fat high explosive shell, but these are mere 75mm howitzers and would have difficulty dealing with more than light armor.
    the 50mm guns on the radio traincar are probably better suited to piercing armor, but they look too long to actually turn without ripping off their radio antenna "halo"
    the russians clearly had some amount of time to prepare a defensive position, they must not have expected the trains to be coming or else they could have just pulled up a few lengths of rails to foil them

    Thats a panzer IV ausf A. with the L24/75mm gun. This wasn't meant to be an anti-tank gun. THIS is the Anti-infantry/vehicle siege gun. This is the gun the 1st panzer iv's came with to battle infantry, sand bags, bunkers, machine gun nests, and anti-tank guns.

  • @davevaderlp784

    I am pretty sure there is three 3 (most commonly used) german gun BARRELS(=Rohr ; in German) : the short/stubby which are on early panzer IV's and early StuG III's (and the Panzer III N. and Neubahrfahrzeug) (KwK 37) ; the medium sized on the later Panzer IV's and later StuG III's/IV's as well as early Jagdpanzer IV's (KwK 40) ; the long one used on Panthers and the Jagdpanzer IV/70 (KwK 42).

    Hey diplex, love the videos, I’m a bit late to the party on this video but to possibly answer the question about the 37mm Russian gun, it might be that that’s the largest they could make it in certain factories with out totally re tooling the factory, fun fact that’s how the 9mm came to be originally the Luger was 7mm and the German military wanted a pistol with more stopping power, they could get two more mm with out redoing their whole factory and the German military accepted and thus the 9mm was born and widely used since, again great videos
