What is wrong with Islam today? | Head to Head

  • Is there really a problem with Islam today? Critics see Muslim women as downtrodden and sectarian conflict dominates the headlines, but for many Muslims this is a gross misrepresentation.
In this episode of Head to Head at the Oxford Union, Mehdi Hasan challenges controversial Canadian author Irshad Manji, writer of The Trouble with Islam Today and also Allah, Liberty and Love on the need to reform Islam, the notion of Ijtihad, the problem of Islamophobia and what Muslims need to own-up to.

Your "loudness" on the topic is hilarious, as your ignorance is level 9000 and yet proudly display it as if it were an actual argument. That is what is Immoral, not a normal, organic (bilogy is thing y'know) action, that everyone else indulged in. Less than 100 years ago, people were marrying at 14...It's not far-fetched to say people 1400 years ago married when puberty hit as they saw it as a sign of adulthood! Which aligns with what we call SCIENCE.
Your argument manifested itself in early 1900's. Why didn't it come up during the 1300 years prior (rhetorical question)?
All of this Reminds me of a quote:
"[...] whereas the popular rationalist, even when he is philosophically the most ignorant of men, is all the more anxious to proclaim himself a rationalist, while at the same time he proudly adorns himself with the title of ‘free-thinker’, all unconscious of irony, for all the time he is but the slave of all the current prejudices of his period."

Islam is not wrong but a lot of us Muslims don't even know about our religion and pretend to be PHDs in Islamic Studies. The problem is with the culture and illiteracy. In my country, things were booming before 79 but due to Afghan war, a lot of people were brainwashed for Afghan "Jihad", which gave us gun culture, sectarian war, drugs and sexism in return. After living so many years in dark age, things are finally once again improving. Hopefully we'll never face similar situation ever again.

So happy to see and hear such amazing challenging conversations!! We need to be okay being uncomfortable speaking about our roots the beliefs our sense of morality we’ve been brought up in. We need to continually educate ourselves and how our faith exposes or limits our experiences. I grew up in an Indian family with a father that is very old school he never let me learn how to swim because he was uncomfortable having me wear a bathing suit?!? I couldn’t fight back then but I’ve been through drag down fights to make my own re-interpretation of what culturally I think is acceptable and NOT my father. I’m not saying that I can’t learn from his experience but what I couldn’t swallow was that I was told something in the name of honour. Or me in a bathing suit brought shame on my family. Knowing how to swim is a life or death skill if ever needed. I’ve taken the good from

Islamic history is soaked in blood through conquest complimented with a macabre grotesque brutality to spread it's message and dominance..islam has been spread by the sword and violence and not peace as only uninformed idiots who are as good as dhimmies already are led to believe.. the ottoman empire just one example of such grotesque action that any Armenian will show testament to that brutality.. only the uninformed ignorant will believe the " religion of peace" utter nonsense when in fact throughout history every country that has fallen to Islamic dominance has then become an undemocratic sexist homophobic intolerant anti semitic bully of others ... Islam designed by men for men to control women

Lots of comments finding Medhi antagonistic... that is the point. This show's format is framed as a debate, but as some others have said: the role of Medhi is not to simply nod his head and agree with his guests. Instead, he deliberately poses challenging or even frustrating questions, and in doing so, allows his guests to defend and elaborate on their positions in a more engaging and passionate way. I believe he essentially is voicing both his shrewd questions and observations from his own reading of their work, as well as posing questions based on having thoroughly reviewed outside critiques of the guest's writings. Whether the guest is prepared to handle this is up to them, but as we see with Irshad Manji and Mona Eltahawy, they are more than capable of holding their own. The audience is provoked, and left more capable to decide where their own conclusions lie. Moreso than if we simply watched a one-sided guest lecture or 'soft' interview that is just a sales pitch for their book.

The phrase that sums up what you are trying to convey is ''devil's advocate''.
I don't buy your argument though that he is playing devil's advocate. I know him too well for him to be that generous in a very sensitive topic of this sort that makes many squirm when Irshad Manji lets out all the closely held secrets. Irshad is doing a fine job on her own and needs no devil's advocate to bring out her best. What Mehdi is doing is damage control, but Irshad is running circles around him.

    • @syedaarim972
      @syedaarim972 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

For that you need to learn what Jihad is.
Jihad is derived from an Arabic word "jahada" which means to strive or struggle and jihad means to strive or struggle for Allah it does not mean holy war because the word holy war's translation to Arabic is "hijat ul baligha" which was used when first crusade war was started.
Secondly there are 4 types of jihad :
      1) jihad bin nafs ( strive or struggle to tour own self means to stop yourself doing sins and bad stuff which could harm innocents) this type of jihad is considered as the most highest ranked Jihad
Then comes other jihad which includes jihad with pen and the last comes
      4) jihad with sword (this is the least preferred jihad and it can not happen until the state approves of.
So before commenting something like this first get to know what jihad is.
Islam does not always talk about Jihad with sword.
Islam is a word which means Peace!

if you put it into context punishment for apostasy is applicable if the apostate speaks or does works against the cohesion of islamic society. If one chooses to leave islam then thats their perogative that doesn't mean he/she still isn't a creation of Allah to a muslim perspective so harming a person without just cause is not allowed
The revelation regarding the execution of apostates was revealed at a time when the enemy of islam in the days of its revelations deliberatly became muslims with the intention to apostate on the hope to demoralise the first muslims to leave this is when the revelation of execution of apostates was revealed so in that context i would only apply this law to corrupters who deliberately sabotage people's livelihoods for greed etc.
Todays many countrys execute traitors for selling secrets or putting their security at grave risk
anyone who leaves islam coz of no malice etc and genuinely does not understand or believe then my hope as a muslim is to hope he will see it to be truth later

I have had this discussion with many fundamentalists, both Christian and Muslim, and they all fail to understand a single concept. Morals are a dynamic set of rules that evolve in time, you simply can't create a static system of believes because we are constantly learning about the universe through science and empathy. If you were to ask my opinion on gay marriage in 1996, I would have probably told you it is wrong, simply because I was raised a catholic and did not know the facts really well, in time, I was exposed to scientific research about gay people and I spoke to some of them , this lead me to re-think my dogmatic views. Muslims need to move away from believes that are based on ignorance and prejudice, and evolve your culture in the same fashion the western world did. Western countries are still debating controversial subjects that crash with traditional views, but at least we moved away from burning cat-ladies just because they look like witches. There are voices within Islam that are calling for reform, we should give this people more room in the media to express their ideas and foster an environment of respectful debate and tolerance.

Is lying brave, or is Jihad deception truth? No? Then neither is she! What the benefit to to whom from what she says? Islam gets a few deceived converts, some may leave when they finally see the truth, that she was lying, bt others either can't or choose to embrace the lies of Islam and won't; so believing her lies would tend to push people away from the true God!
Therefore, we, knowing the truth, know that if she really isn't telling the truth, & her lies help Islam, and that if the truth of Islam is violent that could kill her to cover up, as your argument would conclude, then we must conclude that going to Islam is going to liars & lies, which is away from God, whom is the truth; then if she, by lying, is leading people to Islam, virtually a big dangerous lie, then her lie still leads people away from God, which so what Islam wants, t lead people away from the God of the Bible!
That is why she's not murdered, and therefore she is not brave, cause she knows she knows she's safe.
If you took College Algebra, you studied: "Functions" f(x), then you should understand that because she is a function of lies, no matter what she says in support of a lie (Islam) her arguments are only another function of x, the original lie. which is why she can only help the side of the liars ; but not the truth! An Incredible Debate. She is an Incredible Debater. Mehdi has an Habit of Subtly slipping in polarised interpretations of his debaters in their talks and then making them unknowingly acknowledge them as an extension of their tenets. Irshad Manji called them out at incredibly opportune moments, without letting Mehdi get a grip on leading the conversation.Quite an Admirable feat.
