  • In this episode of Head to Head, Mehdi Hasan challenges public intellectual and feminist icon Germaine Greer on why she criticises the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment and assault.
When the Harvey Weinstein scandal erupted in Hollywood in October 2017, a tsunami of accusations of sexual harassment and assault followed, accompanied by a hashtag: #MeToo.
Dozens of high-profile men have been implicated in the campaign, which rapidly morphed into a global phenomenon, crossing industries and borders and reaching the powerful.
Many feminists see #MeToo as a seismic shift, but Greer has questioned the value and efficacy of the movement, arguing that "there hasn't been a reckoning ... it actually didn't get anywhere. And it has a downside as well, which is presenting women as victims".
Greer has been one of the world's most influential feminist voices since the 1970 publication of her bestselling The Female Eunuch. She has also come under fire for her provocative remarks on subjects ranging from rape to transgender identity.
"When somebody tells me that you're more likely to suffer PTSD as a rape victim than you are as a veteran of foreign wars, something has gone seriously wrong," Greer told the audience at Oxford Union.
We ask her why she thinks #MeToo has gone nowhere, and also challenge some of her more incendiary statements.
We are joined by a panel of three experts:
Laurie Penny - award-winning journalist and feminist activist, contributing editor at the New Statesman, and author of Bitch Doctrine: Essays for Dissenting Adults.
Minna Salami - feminist writer and speaker and founder of the award-winning pan-African feminist blog MsAfropolitan.
Zoe Strimpel - journalist, author, historian of gender and relationships and research fellow at the University of Sussex.
Has #MeToo failed? with Germaine Greer will be broadcast on August 10 at 20:00 GMT and will be repeated on August 11 at 12:00 GMT, August 12 at 01:00 GMT and August 13 at 06:00 GMT.
Head to Head is Al Jazeera's forum for ideas, a gladiatorial contest tackling big issues such as faith, nationalism, democracy and foreign intervention in front of an opinionated audience at the Oxford Union.

Half way through, and I have to say that listening to Germaine speak is as asphyxiating as it is a breath of "fresh air". Truths are hard to swallow, albeit, as they come out off her mouth...a bit contradictory and perplexing...some of what she said her is truth...though dishonest.
My view, these "victories" are only such that because multiple victims were made because each one previous remained silent, took the money or decided to speak because funds dried out. I believe the women, it just frustrates when women don't speak. It enables the rapist to continue abhorrent behavior. Almost to the point where even I find myself tossing up my hands in disgust not just at the alleged perp., but the alleged victim.

The irony: it's a discussion about empowering women to defeat oppressive male hegemony and not a single woman in the room had the courage to call out the male interviewer's aggressive and condescending manner in the way he spoke to Germaine Greer. He was allowed to arrogantly dominate the discussion, without a single voice of dissent! And Germaine, in 2020, is correct. Me too was a classist movement that got some celebrities locked up. But for the everyday woman or the women in developing and 3rd world countries, it did nothing!
Germaine was positioned in an adversarial environment with a hostile audience who weren't out to hear a different point of view, but rather, to attack her for not joining the 'mob'.
Also, Hasan, you are an inappropriate host for this forum because as the typical male as you are, you kept overspeaking your guest and not allowing her the time to fully answer the questions.
For example, I strongly suggest viewers to look up why Germain has no position on female genitial mutilation. Her perspective is something that western feminism tends to discredit.
Me too resulted in a backlash again women's rights and a small victory for rich white women. WAKE UP!

Not having another solution yet wouldn't make MeToo more effective. (There would be TONS of better solutions, but just as Germaine said, people wouldn't do what is required for those solutions, so it's a waste of time to even talk about them. Women would rather prefer pointing their fingers at others all of a sudden.) Also, it's incredible how this moderator disrupts Germaine constantly and his obvious lack of respect towards her opinion.

What an awful interviewer. He wasn't interested in having a conversation, he wanted to shame a woman who regardless of how you feel about her, has devoted her professional life to highlighting feminist issues. I don't understand all this anger towards her. I don't understand why this interviewer thought it was appropriate to interrogate, bate and scoff at everything she said. I am interested in seeing how the MeToo narrative develops, I didn't get to see that. There were instances where she was being thoughtful and taking her time to answer difficult questions. The interviewer seemed to take great pride in pouncing on her while she worked her way through an issue. She intellectually outclassed him and he responded by throwing loaded, damning, reductive questions, which made him look desperate. Also, all those Cheshire cat grins came across mean spirited, unprofessional and creepy.
