      What is a torque stick?

    • @willbgrill
      @willbgrill 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

At shop air pressure at about 120 psi my set over torques it's rating by anywhere from about 7ft-lbs to 20ft-lbs, I now just go down a size and then torque lug nuts by hand after. The higher the torque rating of the stick the more it over torques in my experience. It also differs slightly between lug nut styles i.e. acorn vs the Toyota style flat washer type and differs slightly when the studs have anti-seize on them vs not. I imagine this is a universal finding if I were to use other brands of torque sticks. As with these tests, the longer the impact gun is running the higher the torque rating so I don't keep holding the trigger down once the fastener slows to almost stopping, which is usually a few hits after being snugged.

That is a badass hardness tester - the machines I've used before are floor standing machines, totally mechanical. turn the wheel until you load up the indenter to a certain amount, then pull the main lever/weight applier, and let it sit 30 seconds to settle. Then undo it, and see how far back the needle goes and get your reading that way.
much faster, field usable meter you got there. pretty cool!

Another good video. The torque loss reinforces advice I give, which is to never cheap out on an impact wrench. You need all the power you can afford, because you're going to be giving a lot of the power right back to things like extensions and swivels.

While U-joint style adapters can articulate up to full 90°, they are basically useless at that point and function only as a weak breaker bar. When tilted over the 45° mark, they pump more torque into the pin itself then they transfer to the other end and after around 60° they are hard to rotate anymore. Also, U-joints do not transfer the torque uniformly through the full rotation so their performance may vary greatly, depending not only on tilt but also on rotation angle at any given moment. They don't seem to be a good design for impact action or when the precise torque matters.

I refuse to buy anything branded GW since their parent company (Apex Tool Group)decided it was a good idea to do away with Armstrong after being in business for over 100 years so they could focus on GW. SCREW Apex……most of their tool lines suck anyway.

    • @MrSupernova111

GW is overpriced garbage. Just about all their tools are filled with poor online reviews online. You might as well buy Harbor Freight or auto part store brands and save the money.

I am a fairly green diesel tech. Tekton has been my tool of choice thus far everything I have purchased has worked out really well. Nothing broken yet the tool trucks have been kinda salty towards them and told me i would regret my decision to use that brand. And could not have been more incorrect I am impressed to say the least.

I have and love my Matco sets, I did notice that the way the GearWrench was made is WAY CHEAPER. My Matco has it's grooves through most of it's body, not 4 small points. And I have run these swivels since 2005 on a IR Platinum and Titanium 1/2" drive and a they're 3/8" drive haha
    Great Video!

I own a tonne of Sunex sockets and extensions in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 sizes and although I've been super happy with them, I don't acid test them like you did. It's a shame you didn't just wait all day until they literally grenaded, but I understand the reasons why you didn't do that. I feel even better about my support for Taiwan over China and Sunex ownership now. Thanks for confirming my gut feel and pre-purchase research :-)

Fantastic work. I have an HF pinned universal socket that has held up surprisingly well. I think it's still available for purchase. I also got some Ares universals as extras recently and I'm curious how they stack up, since the price was so reasonable. Keep up these deep dive videos along with the usual stuff, your research and testing is phenomenal.

I used to work at a Heat Treat a few years back. For 4140 the usual heat treat for Sockets similar to this was no preheat time, 2 hours at 1525°F with 0.40% CP, into agitated oil at 140-150°F followed by a 2 hour 500°F temper. Which usually put the RC at 52RC which the customer spec being 48 to 55 RC.
For much Larger sockets such as for 1-1/4in drive with actual size being about 3.5 diameter it also had a 30 minute preheat at 1350°F 0.20%CP before being turned up to 1525°F 0.40%CP. CP being the atmospheric carbon in the furnace.

I just wanted to mention something stupid...I watch these videos late at night wearing headphones and I appreciate that you reduce the impact sound so it doesn't kill my ears lol
Alot of reviews don't and it's almost like using my impact with no plugs, they should take notes.
I've also watched alot of your vids, I appreciate ya 🤙🏻

Would be interesting to know how the higher end universal sockets and adapters perform like snap on. To see if the huge price increase is really worth it. From owning snap on universal sockets & cheaper versions in the past there is a noticeable build quality difference. But knowing more of the details would be nice to know.

It would be very interesting to compare air vs cordless power loss on extensions and swivels. I’ve always felt like my Milwaukee high torque gets hurt more from extensions and swivels. Some of my coworkers feel they see the same thing. Personally I always had the best luck with Mac pinned swivels. They still do break, and are fairly chunky but I felt I had less power loss than I did with the cheaper ones.

After seeing this great video. It reassured me of my Sunex argument with my shop guys. I have an assortment of Mac tools, Matco, Icon, Snap-on and Sunex, some Ares and Astro Pneumatic. As far as sockets go I'd have to say overall I'm a Sunex guy. Price for quality out pacing the bunch. But in all fairness and reality Snap-on hand tools and sockets are probably the best performing. I went through almost all for wobble extensions Snap-ons precision is unbeatable. Especially since they are Chrome non impact. But are used with hand and power all the same and hold up all the same. Universal impact sockets though I'd have to say Matco ADV is top with Sunex and Snap-on very close second. Ratcheting wrenches Snap-on and Icon handle the most torque consistently before failure where Matco and Mac tools fail. This is just from my shop experience. Point is All of these top companies have something special to offer that can't be beat. Variety of smart choices and experience along with good you tube videos will give you the most complete tool assortment. You can't go wrong with all Snap-on but there is always something better and possibly cheaper still with a lifetime guarantee.

Have the Tekton set and I can confirm it does feel a little smoother once it’s been used a little bit. Definitely did the job I bought it for, I had to remove the AC bracket from my gx470 and it’s at a weird angle, but with the universal socket adapters, it came out quickly and easily.

I don't have a good 1/2 drive universal, but I have been very happy with my 3/8 Sunex universal. I've had it for over 5 years now and it still works just fine. The locking collar for the pin is a little sloppy but it has no where to go. Glad to see that the Tekton 1/2 universal I've been looking at is bound to hold up just fine, though I may actually just stick with Sunex in this case.

I’m a heavy equipment and industrial plant mechanic and I’ve always used the gear wrench style swivel adapters because the hold up and don’t break as often . Mine are craftsman and Matco brands and I bought them in 2005ish . Ive broke pined ones of all brands from harbor freight to snap-on’s . For pinned versions I do like snap on the best and I have swivel socket sets of 3/8 and 1/2 metric but I bought them at a pawn shop years ago, the cost is way to high off the tool truck .

Yet another amazing video! One thing I would like to see is on battery powered tools the torque loss as the battery gets lower on charge. For example full power, 3/4 power.. half power etc
