That's what I did with foiling also. I learned that I didn't like the look of foiling enough to invest in all the machines and tools. I definitely saved a lot of $$ by taking it slow.

I appreciate your honesty in your videos. It isn't common place in the TH-cam art world, I respect it is the livelihood of many (but still). Also, you look exactly the same as sixteen years ago! I guess creating and teaching does wonders for your soul :) This week is a reminder to bless American teachers. Greetings from Canada.

Just wanted to say thank you for this. ❤️ I know this is for any purchase, but I specifically needed the foiling tutorial. I love the look of foil, but I thought you needed a die cutting machine or foil machine to use, both of which I don’t have, don’t have the budget for, nor the desire to get. And when you search foiling tutorials, that’s pretty much all I can find being used. I currently use nail art foil tape. It’s super thin and fiddly (which I personally don’t mind), but I want to use thicker strips and designs. I have a laminator, a really ancient toner copier that still works and has plenty of toner, and enough double sided tape to stock Amazon. Needless to say, this video was perfect! Thank you soooo much!!🌺❤️

I totally resonate with this. I've only been cardmaking for about 5 years & at 1st I bought every stamp known to man. But then I realized I only grabbed a few favorites all the time. Now, I am getting ready to purge my craft room. I don't have any foiling or a lot of gadgets. I got wise to wether I'd use them or not 1st. Whew! Saved myself a ton of money.

Thank you so much for this video. I am a Craft-A-Holic and my buying has gotten completely out of hand. I have so many products I have never used and I keep buying. And I agree about all the different ‘genres’ within the papercrafting industry. I have the foiling and just got the better press and I have yet to use either! What great ideas about foiling! I agree about tools that take a long time to ‘operate’. I hadn’t used my Cricut in a while and now the Design Space is so different I feel like I have to relearn everything. Thank you again for having a video to encourage people NOT to keep buying.

Oh how I wish I had thought to research before buying! When the Cricuit came out the tiny one...I bought it. Used it a lot. The first big one came out, bought it and DOZENS of cartridges, I got sick, could not use for awhile, they came out with a machine that did NOT use cartridges, I bought it (never opened the box on second machine, never could use the third) bought another brand... actually two. One ripped up my paper and the other was fazed out with less than THREE YT videos on how to use! Expensive lessons, you BET! Will take your advice on doing research BEFORE I buy from now on! Thank you SO MUCH for the good advice all three of you ladies have given!

To use stamps with foil: use embossing powder! There are a few videos showing this technique. Stamp and add powder like normal. Heat the powder until it melts but isn't shiny, usually about the halfway point when you are heat embossing. Then add foil and run through your machine for the pressure. Sometimes the final product can be splotchy because of how the powder heated. Works best with clear or white powder. You can also buy heat and stick embossing powder but I've only had limited luck with that - tends to be very splotchy.
I'm a big fan of the line of double sided tear tape then foil that line. Quick easy accent!

I love my Cricut, but often don't want to pull it out unless I am doing a big project. I bought a full set of alcohol inks and immediately became interested in another technique and they sit. I purchased lots of colors of embossing powder but usually use the same three or four. Don't even talk to me about decorative paper pads which I love to buy but rarely use. I've come to the same conclusion you did. Buy what you need to learn a technique and then see if you want to continue with it. If so, buy what enhances it. I think this is great advice you gave. I hope I can stick to it!

I have a crikut and have for over 2 yrs. It’s still in the box in closet. I’m intimidated by this. But I’ve used the excuse that I only have 2 plugs in the rm in my older house. ( buying the house in retrospect, it would have been a deal breaker with no closets built in and very few plugs).
I now chill out on buying. I shop my stash now. I also have the Gemini. Still in box.
I throw my hands up now and say, why??? Lol if I had half the money I’ve spent the last 2 yrs I could invest in what I really really wanted. I was an impulsive buyer when I saw videos and really thought I’d do it.
I’m going to pull them out and try them now but I’ll probably list now to sell if I know it’s just not worth it.
    Great video. Thank you

Thank you for walking us through your motivations to buy or not to buy. Also thank you for showing some foiling techniques without the glimmer machine, I like to use foil i all kind of different way. But I have the glimmer machine, and I like it. Also because you can use your regular dies for foiling. I discovered a tutorial from a Danish lady who also uses regular dies and added thin paper (like baking paper) between the sandwich which made the lines a bit thicker. Her name is Pia Larsen and her tutorial is called “How to get thicker lines with dies”. Thank you for your tutorial, great ideas 👍🏻

I have an original WRMK Evolution for die cutting. It's great - but no longer produced (like items for my original scan n cut) and no options for other plates to accommodate heat foiling. I just can't justify ANOTHER die cutter + the Glimmer machine + heat foil rolls + plates. I'm not independently wealthy nor have I recently won the lottery, and my craft room is only one room! Dou paste and pressure foiling is where I begin and end. Its hard at times, but I need to learn to love - and live - with what I have. Thanks for the very relatable video!

A month after watching your video I'm reviewing it again as I reorganize my crafting studio. Having been a stamper for 30+ years I've followed many trends and abandoned others but not the supplies. Time to purge! Your guidelines have been super helpful in helping me to downsize. I'm seeing many techniques that were 'old and now new again' with a twist and I can assess 'been there done that'. Pass and not be tempted.

I tried out foiling and then realized that as much as I liked the look (at least when it’s impressed into the surface of the paper) I didn’t enjoy working with the foil itself. I like paper, not plastic, and I found it frustrating to use. I can also get a shiny look with gold heat embossing, which tbh is also more trouble than it’s worth to me most of the time! I’m trying to do what you talked about - drilling down into the techniques and looks that I love the most, even if there are other things that I *could* enjoy. Thanks for sharing your thought process with us.

😀 Nice video Justine. I had been passing on the hot foiling craze (notice past tense). I already had the Gemini Jr. die cutting machine, but wasn't convinced I needed another machine. I have had mixed results with Duo foiling and a laminator paired with toner images. What changed my mind to invest in hot foiling was the ability to use dies I already own . That possibility tipped the scales for me. Many fewer purchases would be necessary. I've been getting terrific foiled images with dies I own using the flat metal shim that came as part of the Gemini Foilpress system I bought. I didn't have to buy a special extra blank plate. After the initial foiling, I've been able to use left over foil sheets also with the flat metal shim to transfer the remaining foil to a second cardstock sheet. It does take time to do some test runs to determine what if any cardstock shims are needed to get good results. I also played around with time and temperature, features the Gemini system offers. All in all, I am happy with my Foilpress purchase, but the fact I could use it with the many dies I already owned was the deciding factor.

HI, just in the middle of doing it exactly what you have been through with the foil,, I applied gilding glue with my stamps, not a bad result you leave it to dry like the gel you used, I just need to practice a bit more but I think it will be cheaper and less messy than the toner ink . I only tried red rubber stamps. Also I brushed the glue on the paper for a brush stroke effect, do not over work with the brush and put a thin layer on thick enough not to leave to may brush marks in the main area but needed them at the start and the end of the stoke. Very pleased with the result,I put all my foiling through the laminar for the pressure as you did with the cutting machine . Must try the sponge I used on the stamp with my stencils next and some more solid silhouette type stamps

This is great advice. The only reason I got the Glimmer system is because my sister bought it for me for Christmas, and my husband was able to order me a ton of hot foil plates during a big Clearance sale for 60-80% off--otherwise I would have a very small collection. The biggest issue is I've had it since Christmas & haven't touched it yet. Granted, I haven't touched much of anything in the last couple years because I'm still inventorying, purging & organizing my first ever full craft room in our first owned home. Investing in organization solutions is expensive & I have been doing that slowly, so not everything is unpacked & put away yet. To make matters even more overwhelming--Im a retail therapy person and unfortunately went overboard with buying stamps & dies in the past 2 years--partially because I wasn't actually crafting much. I would spend the time I would usually use to create something shopping online, telling myself I was supporting my favorite companies through the pandemic. And I was...but I was also adding to the overwhelm in a big way & creating additional storage problems for myself. I'm currently on a spending freeze & will be seriously budging as I go to get back to a manageable collection.

I bought the heat press when I was first starting out using COVID refund bucks! ??? But it cost brand new under 35 dollars on an office supply company? I went wild with it for a bit. However it's now sat put away for 2 years. I actually prefer to use a very small brother laser printer bought just for this under 80 dollars monochromatic black only but color toners are fine to use too. Now I love to print text and then laminate foils. You can buy super long 25 foot rolls of textured and solid fabric foils that works with this. I also cover entire sheets with toner and laminate and then enjoy die cutting. Dragons are fantastic in blue glittery and hallowgram like foils. To be honest over 27 years ago I bought two laminator semi pro pouch laminators and they are grand. One allows thicker materials called BIG MOUTH. I don't think they are made any longer. They have hung in for all kinds of laminations and that includes my making my own pouches and getting creative outside the box for laminating one sided gift tags. Or both sides and cutting out with steel rule dies. So I have the foil bug bad. But I wanted to know what could I do with my glummer and hot foil dies? Can I cold emboss/deboss? OH YES YOU CAN. Look up video's on TH-cam to get started with ideas. You use pigment ink pads and ink up the die upper part and run it through your machine according usually to how you would use a 3D Embossing Folder. Often rubber mat or crease mat on top of platform. Paper next and die facing down then clean unwarpped cutting plate. Voila a beautiful debossed design or embossed depends on how you set a design up or words usually are pressed into the paper. Dye inks do not work as well they don't stick well to the raised metal die. Meantime I'm thrilled to find ways to use my stash of hot foil dies and repurpose and yes still now and again dig out the hot plate and set up. But just a week ago I watched Marion from UK demo a small pancake 4" griddle for 10 dollars on line and melt WOW embossing powders. There is probably no reason these griddles would not work to heat foil too and a lot less expensive than the now over 100 dollar heat press you and I have. I'm a huge fan of thinking outside the box. I ordered a 8" griddle too for 20 and that allowed me to use this enormous To The Moon and Back word die all connected and melt embossing powder over the copic colored cut out by my friend. We made two but colored one on the back side so we could glue them together and make a lovely hanging ornament. The die was way too big for the small 4" baker. It'll take me a few months to swing around to try the heat dies and the bakers alone but I do believe there is no reason not to work. Just using common sense and staying focused. I would not be shocked to see next year theses little 10 dollar bakers hit the market at two to three times that with a card making companies logo on them. For now I found it much easier to use than my heat gun which I have three of. One going back ovre 24 years and another super cheap but small and a newer WOW two temperature one I found 10 off at the once again office supply store. People if you see something you think you need step back and do some research, evaluate your personality as will I use it and does it fit my style or world. Do I have means to store supplies involved and keep them clean. And follow the rule of unsubscribe from craft sites as soon as you've located the supplies you want and ordered and no longer need to see them every day in your inbox. My friend used my copic pens for our learning curve with pancake baker and embossing supplies and she discovered her pens were fewer and hey I never once used them after getting them on sale last Dec 60 pens for 9.99. I'm leaning towards gifting them to her. I want to test out colored pencils and my chalk charcoals which I've used over 60 years and if they emboss with similar results the pens are hers. Ladies and Gent's we've got to take time to think about what we are doing. Slow down and smell the flowers or at least evaluate is that purchase really needed and don't I already have a similar Fox, rabbit, dog die? That's right and when we do we also realize how creative we can be to achieve sometimes better results thinking outside the box and coloring outside the lines. Hugs to everyone and Justine for your Video today. I haven't watched how to resist New releases yet it's up next. But my problem is hunting down discontinued dies and buying used or new or bargains or not. It plays to my detective and scientific mind too much. Like a game. Maybe I'll have to address that myself. But nah at 74 I am not interested in a TH-cam career or any on line career at all. Just running after the dream of playing with all these toys. OH MY GOSH lets have FUN...but avoid too much temptation. Hugs and more hugs..I do not need one more HUG die or stamp. I do have plenty.

Such great advice. I love the foil journey you shared. You touch on some great topics, but I'd add one more thing, convenience of usage and ease of access. If you can get to supplies easily, you're more likely to use them. You mentioned the Cricut. Like you mine was collecting dust, but after I redid my crafting area, it's become one of my most used tools - especially for sentiments. I use the foil quill and pen to create custom banners. I make them in bulk a few times a week. Now of course this tool is expensive and needs room, so it may not be possible to be out for all, but the easier to get to, the more likely it will be used. I think that a huge deterrent is the aspect of having to lug out any supply. Thank you for sharing.

A good friend online had hers and was having such great results and fun, I finally ordered one when Amazon had a wonderful price on the Glimmer machine! I did my research & watched a ton of videos and will say that the videos make it look more complicated than it is....fortunately! I am buying hot plates slowly & and finding out how to use regular dies too. I was also late to the die cut machine party....just sounded way to confusing with all those sandwiches...UNTIL I saw a Big Shot in person and was shown how it worked. Sold. Bought it and never looked back! It so energized my card making hobby and made me happy! Hoping the Glimmer machine does the same...it certainly produces beautiful cards!

Hi Justine, I've been making cards for years with just stamps. I really enjoy die cutting so this past Christmas I purchased a Spellbinders Platinum 6 for $79 and just love how much more I can do now. I even discovered the fun of embossing folders. My budget is pretty tight so that helps control my urge to splurge! I have a folder of your videos in my TH-cam acct. I love love nearly everything you demonstrate. I recently have seen a few of Ardeth's & Laurel's videos. I watch Natash Foote often and she also encourages shopping our own supplies to try what she demonstrates. I can see how having a business in this industry would require demonstrating new products often. You have every reason to stay current with new trends and styles. So thank you for this video. I had no idea I could use foil, double sided tape and dies, or stencils. If you read this, what kind of foil would I use for these techniques? Thanks for all you do for us Justine.🌷💜🌷

I love the look of foil on cards, but this video was a good reminder to spend more time seeing what I can do with low-cost foiling methods before I decide whether it would make sense to invest in an expensive machine and foiling dies.

I'm another person who's resisted adding a laminator or glimmer-foil type system, even though I do like the results I see. (I also make note of potential frustrations.) I have foils from probably 20 years ago that I occasionally use with tape or sticky embossing powder, and I did get the duo transfer getl because I finally have some success with stenciling. I have such a huge variety of techniques to do, I don't really need to add something that's so potentially expensive.

Oh yes. I wish I had resisted buying the hot foil machine. It's still there in my cupboard. I have to remember how to use it every time I get it out...so I don't reach for it often. I reckon buying craft products was as much a hobby as using craft products. I am much better at resisting now than before & much more discerning. I think its the actual mail I crave rather than the items themselves. I often put all the things I want in the cart & leave it for a few days & often the urge to purchase disappears. Thanks for your videos 💕

I absolutely love foiling but decided not to invest in a hot foiling system. I have a large collection of stamps so I decided to try stamping some of them in black. Then I scanned them into a document, took it to Office Depot and copied onto smooth cardstock. Then I used my toner foil and laminator and I was very pleased with the result 💕

My number 1 tip for saving money, is: KEEP A LIST OF THE PRODUCTS YOU USE. And I don't mean just once. I mean use all the way up. That way you know what's a good investment. This has changed my life at least.

I bought a big bottle of toner ink. mixed some with tacky glue and put it on a wonder sponge. After that I stored it in a little box. It works very well for stamps etc. Sometimes I need to ad some toner ink, but it keeps on working and I have crisp foiled stamps. A large bottle of toner ink costs about €5,00. So maybe I helped someone with this idea?

Totally guilty here. I do have a few foiling plates, but I bought mostly backgrounds and sentiments. Occasionally I pull out the Glimmer machine and go to town creating a few pieces, which go in my “ready to go” drawer, for when I want a quick card. I also ink up the plates and make an impression with them. I also started out with Deco Foil and transfer gel, but the results were so inconsistent, plus the foil sits on the surface of the paper and is easily scratched up, while hot foiling looks more professional and is debossed into the paper. I also never buy new releases, I wait until they’re on clearance. I could’ve done without it but I do love the look. I have also used dies I already own for hot foiling, it takes some experimenting but works quite well.

Thank you so much for sharing Justine. I see so many videos with foiling in and they all use the glimmer machine and have the latest hot foiling dies. The cards looks so stunning, but to me it seems like a huge expense all at once. I don’t have the spellbinders die machine that goes with the glimmer machine. I still own a cuttlebug which I love. I certainly don’t own any hot foil dies either, so the thought of spending hundreds on products just to see if it is for me or not is out of the question. But I do have tape, some foil that has been given to me and maybe I could try the duo gel. I have a laminator, I already have embossing powders, so I will give Simon Hurley’s technique a try, and maybe purchase some toner sheets. I enjoyed your foiling journey. Thanks again.

I haven’t jumped on the foil trend because of the extreme expense. You need plates...you need special foil plus the machine. Yikes. It’s beautiful... no doubt but love the idea to use what we have and try to make that work. I appreciate what you 3 ladies have pulled together! Common sense at last! Thanks so much! 🙋‍♀️💕🌴

Thanks for the tips on foiling Justine. I've wanted to give it a try but have held off due to the expense. I can't justify spending so much money on something I might not enjoy in the long run. I have a nice large roll of 5 inch double sided tape so I'll start there.

I don’t live in the US so I am more intentional about what I buy. Inkike that you don’t promote the latest release. I have both the WRMK Foil Quill and use it to personalize cards and after being frustrated with foiling svg’s bought the Glimmer machine. Love both. The foil plates are an investment and I know that if I ever want to sell them they will be snapped up in my country.

I got the hot foil machine for a gift, then more plates and more foil the following year. I use it a little but the right paper had to come into my life before it really worked for me. I tried the laminated kind several years ago and hated it. I sold it all. Hopefully I will use my hot foil machine enough to justify owning it.

This is how I feel about hot foiling and different card sizes.. I stay with A2 so I don’t have to buy dies and stuff for say slimline and A2.. I am on the fence with hot foiling because you have to buy the machine and dies.. I have some stuff to use a laminator, I use the laminator for organization too..

I agree to an extent; very often i have had success with cheaper items but sometimes i wish i had invested in the better one to begin with. A big example for me is a stamping platform. I didn't want to spend on the misti so i got the tim holtz which really doesn't work well. By now the misti cost is way out of reach for me.
However, as far as inks/stamps etc i have a lot of luck w the cheap michaels products
