Bonding or sticky embossing powders work beautifully for the foil

OMG, I just realized that's not what she's using in this video. I was wondering if something was wring with her laminator. Sticky embossing powder makes all the difference for foiling.

Hi Justine, if you heat the powder from underneath you will get a smoother finish which will give you a better foiled finish, I’d also try 1. Putting it on setting number 3 or 2. Put a shim in with your foil to give it more pressure.. have fun xxx

Thanks for showing your experiments, Justine. I can't wait to see what else you have up your sleeve for next time. On the note of foiling with heat embossing, there is a related technique I learned from Lindsay the Frugal Crafter. I know it works with stencils, as I've done that, but I'm not sure if it would translate well to stamps. You can actually use a glossy medium like Liquitex or Golden Gloss Gel (any consistency), or even gloss Mod Podge. It just has to have a glossy finish. Spread it over your stencil, or wherever you want foil, & let it dry completely. Then you can run it through a hot laminator/Minc machine with toner-reactive foil over the design/image, & the foil will adhere to the medium. No need for expensive specialty gels/pastes that you would use only for foiling. I've only done it on my Minc, and (if I remember correctly) set it on 3 or 4. I'm not sure if a certain temperature makes a difference, though Lindsay just used an inexpensive laminator & seemed to get good results. Anyway, something else to add to your experimentation arsenal, if you want. Thank you again for sharing. Take care, & have an awesome day! :)

Did you try raising the temp on your laminator- as you did for the plate? Curious if that might help the heat embossing method. Thanks for your experiments.

Oooh, I agree. Especially with a solid image, you’ve got a lot of embossing powder to re-melt so that it sticks to the foil. I don’t think setting 2 of 5 was hot enough to do that.
Or an added sheet of paper for more pressure.

My idea with the foiling the leaves was to colour in the insides with watercolour, to give it layers and then the foiling is a nice bonus. I think it could be really nice, maybe even nicer if it was fully foiled. I might try that when I've finally organized all my stuff, so sometime next year ;)
The text one could be a nice foil distress, I found that most embossing powder I try to use with text aren't that good, so when I used one on a card, I stamped the stamp on the inside of the card, so they could fully read it and it was really loved :)

I print phrases and inside verses on text weight or 80 lb paper on my PC then use my laser printer to print them. Then lay foil on them and run them through my laminated. It turns out very nice. Also to use foil on front of my card like “Happy Birthday “, I print this on plain text paper, then place my completed card front on top of it and hold it up to my strong light, tape my card stock on the text paper exactly where I want it foiled phrase , then run it through my laser printer, now it is on the card stock, now cover it with foil and run it through your foil machine or laminated. Works good.

I get excellent results with my Go Press and Foil and reverse hot foiling. Mostly, I just go ahead and keep my solid plate out and run it through right after I create the first one. I have a few hot foil cover dies that it's super effective with and sometimes I have trouble deciding which one I like the best.
I haven't had great results with embossing powder and deco foiling. I wanted to use the technique last year for a cover stamp with The Night Before Christmas poem on it and in the end, I just used embossing powder only as it basically looked the same with a lot less work and frustration. (Need I say I have LOTS of different embossing powders?)

I wondered about the stamping-and-embossing. My *embossing* is often not smooth, and I would think that would affect this. I also wonder if the embossing powder really needs to be melted already, or if you could just carefully put it through with the foil and let the heat from the Minc melt it?

I noticed you’re using the manual die cutting machine now with glimmer. Did you find any issues with the Switch? I saw you used it in other occasions. It’s the only machine I have and I’m wondering if I should get a manual one to use with foiling

wow embossing has a Bonding powder, and that works better, but it still looks more Distressed than slick. not for me, I've tried it. also Wow says I should wait a few seconds before removing the foil. theirs looks better than I've ever been able to get

Another way to get good results with hot foil “leftover” is to use it with a toner sheet and run it through your laminator. Could you give that a try?

    • @justinehovey
      @justinehovey  ปีที่แล้ว

That would not work in this case because the foil is different with hot foiling than a laminator. If you laminated and foiled something and then used toner paper with the scraps, that’s ok

I haven’t watched Simon’s video. Did you use the same embossing ink, embossing ink pad, embossing powder, heat gun, time spent melting the powder, heat transfer foil, laminator, etc? It sounds like he emphasized any stamp, but not the other things to consider in the process. The variables in products and techniques can give varied results.

Brilliant video, would love it if you would make a series of it, and....i Have an idea, saw a video, by Pia Krogh Larsen: how to get thicker lines with dies. I am not such a good hot foiler, and Pia's technique does not work for me, but looks amazing, so i think i do it wrong. As you are a much better foiler, would LOVE it if you would try it. I bet you would make LOTS of people SO happy if you show how....... Please.. 🙏, ps love your channel👍😘
