Stark Jegan from Unicorn really does prove this. That lone badass would have ended the first episode before it began if not for the Kashytriya blindsiding him.
The Gelgoog is a beast, especially when matched with an ace like Char or Johnny Raiden. My favorite is the MS-14jg Gelgoog Jaeger in 0080. That sucker had like triple the thrusters output as a regular Gelgoog if I remember correctly, far superior to even the Gelgoog Marine in 0083.
By biggest problem with every Gundam series is that instead of cool robot battles, every enemy HAS to be shown to be a threat to the protag first, thus it always feels forced when one suit from Zeon/the bad guys' team wipes the floor with a bunch of federation ones. Like, I get it, they are a threat; showing the elite team of modern MS get dominated by 3 rubber bands and a plastic tarp takes me more out of the action than into it.
Nail on the head. My biggest issue, well with anything involving drama, is the absurd levels they will often go to heap as much (unnecessary) drama as they can into every last scene because...?!!?! Case in point: last five or so episodes of 0083. A colony drop, several plot twists and betrayals, plus the concluding of the series long duel between the main two characters of the show just IS NOT ENOUGH drama apparently. No we gotta toss in a love triangle from out of left field and oh one of Nina's old friends gets shot because reasons. Origin actually gets it right, only to then bludgeon me over the head repeatedly with slapstick yuck yucks just incase I might've actually been even somewhat emotionally involved with the tragic events or emotional dialogue that had been taking place just moments before. Honestly this is the worst of the two. It's like if you were watching Stalingrad or Das Boot and moments after some shockingly tragic scene you get Colonel Klink and Sgt. Shultz doing a bit.
Huh? Most times in Gundam series the enemy is fielding better suits, it's kinda rare for the outdated stuff to hold up. And if you dont show the antagonist to be a threat....uh what's the point of the show? Like if we never see the enemy beating something, why should we even be invested in what the protag is doing? We just see character after character get their ass kicked by the protag? Hows that an interesting watch?
I'm literally trying to think of times we see a bunch of low performance "bad guy" suits wreck good guy high performance units: any time it happens in OG Gundam it's because Amuro is inexperienced, by the series mid point anything giving him trouble isnt low performance. Other then the Gundams, all the AEUG suits are generally worse than all the Titan stuff, not an issue in CCA, the Federation is using incredibly outdated suits in F91, and even worse so in V. Other then the final fight in 0080, every fight is between generally equal performance machine, and while we see a lot of fed suits merced at the start of 0083, that's more about green pilots vs hardened veterans. And they mostly win on account of the high performance Gundam they just stole. So what moments in UC Gundam besides the one episode in Unicorn and the general derp of ZZ do we see the antagonist use "three rubberbands and a tarp" to wipe modern elite good guy teams? It's almost always done by the newest high performance suit they just rolled out
the lack of any serious effort by the legitimate EFF (eg not TITANS) to clean up the Zeon forces on Earth is weird. Also, why are EFF pilots usually so green???
Well there's the fight between Scarlet Team and the Kampfer in 0080, in which the Kampfer defats 6 (presumably elite) MSs, including two GMs Sniper II, which were supposed to have better stats than the Gundam itself ! Though this one is more a case of stupid tactics than pilots incompetence. The Feds should've dropped one sniper away from the Kampfer and sent the rest to distract Mikhail, this way the sniper could've shot the Kampfer from afar. But instead they decided to drop the entire team at CQC range, go figure. Also from 0080, there's the second fight scene in ep1. Technically it doesn't really count since the Feds canonically won that one, but during the entire scene we see Zakus curbstomping GMs Command, which is ludicrous. The original GM was already superior to the Zaku in every way, so the Commands should really be more talented than that. Damn, they don't even manage to kill Bernie. Sure, they shoot him down, but he's a rookie facing experienced soldiers (GMs Command are usually given to commanders or elite pilots), this should've been an instant death for him !
I love Zaku 1. When I was told to pick a low powered mecha for a game, I immediately jumped for it and gave it a blade antenna. It has good basic functions, frame, and handling. It's always been a low cost unit ripe for jury-rigging, equipment testing, upgrade packages, and utility duties, a great addition to any squad looking to add a unit fit for a little bit of anything.
Honestly surprised the Z'gok didn't make this list. All things considered the machine was not only one of the best overall performing amphibious type mobile suits ever designed. Even as it aged, the thing was able to rip ships apart and take down newer gem variants as well as a gundam built specifically for underwater combat.
frankly all of Zeons water combat units are great. the Feddies just take what they have and modify them the Aqua GM is basicly a GM with water gear slapped on. all zeon ones were built from the ground up. the Zee Zulu is the exception cause to me its mislabeled. its more akin to say a Navy SEAL using scuba gear to get to land then diching for standered weapons.
@@gravefox4206 Eh, that isn't quite true. Zeon originally used a zaku with gear strapped onto it. They realized it's performance wasn't enough, and after that began to develop the rest of their designs. Also to be fair, the vast majority of amphibious mobile suits are meant to serve both fighting roles: in the water, and on land hence amphibious.
@@MuShinnen fair point i tend to forget but Zeon did learn unlike the federation. look at the Gogg it wasnt able to stay on land for to long while the Acguy and Z'gok could the Hygogg was a major improvment over the original Gogg as well.
Wanna know what's really funny? By the time of Gundam Wing's first episode the Leo had been in service for near 20 years, and not only is it still a top tier mainline unit, it's still the go to unit when things needed to get done right. Combat an enemy MS? Combat a captured MS? Outgunned? Outnumbered? Enemy upgraded? Is it a Gundam? Send in a factory stock Leo.
@@JeanLucCaptain Setsuna can't clean house by piloting nothing but a flag, the wing boys can't bring world peace with but five basic Leos, Tekkadan won't survive long if all they had are a bunch of shidens. Amuro can't take on Char in his Sazabi with his OG gundam and Jesus Yamato won't be able lay waste to an entire army in a second with just a GINN. No, gundams aren't just for show, their performance matters.
@@qiushuang239 You're also talking about main characters vs grunts. Yes, the Gundams mattered (it is the name of the show after all lol) but your skills as a pilot mattered as well. Heero and Duo kicked the crap out of Made Maia's Serpent types in old Space Leos and Heero held his own against Wu Fei in Altron. Just because you have a grunt suit doesn't mean you get beat, and just because you have a Gundam doesn't mean you're gonna win.
I like to think there's a difference between outdated and old school. Old school in real world comparisons would be like using a car from the 1970's today. Out dated is something that has too many downsides to be ever dragged out of retirement.
Random fact: During Zeta Gundam when Reccoa defects to the Titans in a Gelgoog captured by the AEUG in the remains of a Zeon ship, the Gelgoog was not actually the Gelgoog. Instead, the AEUG took that Gelgoog's armor and put it on the frame of a Nemo, resulting in a normal Gelgoog with stats being atleast on par, if not better than, the GM Sniper II *(This is a good thing, the Sniper II was the most powerful GM variant of the OYW and was whole lot better than the Gundam in every which way on paper and the Nemo is based off the Sniper II)*
It was very likely that it was built as a "top gun aggressor" unit to act as a target for federal cadets in training . Having federal ms internals would simply repairs. The same concept probably led to the RMS-106 the need.to keep the aggressor Zaku II units running with a supply chain issue probably led to units with RGM-79 parts field retrofitted in making more like a Zanny. The data getting fed back would have led to the brass requesting AE design a new unit in the zaku line that used RGM standard parts to save on costs.
Nah it is most likely cross technology with EF Galbaldy alpha and beta. those production line did borrow and improved gelgoog tech thus make it easier to implement into older frame.
That is one of the things that I love about Zeon MS, is that even when dated, they are incredibly durable and usually have higher capabilities than expected. Partly why in Gundam Breaker my main builds are based on the Zudah, Gouf and sometimes Geara Doga, outside of using the Tallgeese.
@MIDKNIGHT FENERIR Not even a little bit. Unless you mean in the early era where the Federation had tanks while Zeon had suits, then sure, but only by sheer virtue of "1 is bigger than 0." Otherwise once the Federation actually entered into the MS phase they always had the upper hand. For an example the Zeon suit Gelgoog, developed late war, was only marginally better statistically speaking then the Gundam, which had fought through a large portion of the war already.
I was kinda hoping for the Z'Gok just because I remember reading how one was still able to punch clean through either a GM II or III, but I do very much love the elephant taking that spot
>the other clunkers the neo-zeon remnants used-- *cough cough* Don't you mean Earth Zeon remnants? The whole reason why they had outdated tech was because they had been waiting for the chance to rejoin Zeon's war of independence ever since the OYW, being abandoned after Operation Odessa like many others we see in both 0083 & 0088. They were however assisted by 2 Zee Zulu's and their pilots gifted to Looni's group by Full Frontal as a fake reassurance, but that's it on the "neo-zeon remnant" side. Sorry for being pedantic about that small thing.
that blue Gelgoog i think it was featured in the manga "return of Johnny Ridden." listed features displayed during its appearance; anti-beam coating radar-absorbent coating passive/active targeting scrambler high-output reactor low-heat signature high-mobility in atmosphere extreme operational range advance and detailed sensors (post OYW and pre-Zeta specs) magnetic-coated joints
If you were to do an AU version of this list, I imagine every Gundam frame from Iron Blooded Orphans will be on there as it is literally 300 year-old technology outperforming modern tech in that universe
TechnoKnight technically wing zero would also qualify since it was developed shortly after the tallgeese was, it just didn’t get past the blueprint phase until 15 years later
Unicorn is fair IMHO while showing the usual Zeon is badass, they also have rare normal Feds aces, like the fearsome Byarlant custom and the awesome Stark Jegan pilot
2:28 sure just modify a zaku into a sniper, makes sense. Snipers don't need durability, just accuarcy and mobility/cloaking to get into good hiding spots.
The juag actually did show up in the one year war in gundam we are the federation hooligan when they did a sneak attack on ellsworths base with some zaku and other experimental aqua ms which then dig right into the heart of the federation base
I think it's interesting to note that a Nemo managed to defeat a Capule in Dakar, which is impressive since the Nemo was outdated compared to the Capule that Neo-Zeon was deploying at the time.
I love all the mobile suits in this video and most of them are my favourites, but I especially love the Juaggu. Its just the cutest building sized nuclear powered war robot around.

Thanks for the awesome video. I've been out of the Gundam loop for a long time, and this video was randomly recommended, decided to watch it. Glad I did.
3:37 from old time otaku perspective, the scene was one helluva nod to those who stuck around since the 1st Gundam days. Juaggu never appeared in the first TV series. It was seen first time ins MSV (Mobile Suits Variation) scale model series that came out shortly after the 1st Gundam broadcast. Basically it was a way to make money out of designs that were axed, canned or didn't make it to final cut for one reason or other. It was mentioned here and there in novels and games, but the only other appearance in anime is in Gundam Build Fighters.
This list could have easily been “zeon needs new mobile suits badly.” And you could have had 5 zeon ms on it. And then make a list with the byalant custom, cause that was 10 years old and kicking 10 times its own ass
Love your videos. I'd really like to request that you make a video covering a series called Mobile Suit Gundam gihren's greed. Something not a lot of people might have had the chance to play. But it has a lot of animations and sequences and scenes that a lot of people have no doubt come across. I think covering that particular game and what it entails along with the ending and how it plays out so differently for characters from Stardust memory to the 8th Ms team, even Char's Counterattack. I think that would be a really interesting video to cover. The alternate series of events and timelines are quite interesting
What's interesting is what series you watch should be a huge factor for the difference a suit makes. The Zaku I wasn't exactly a WWI tank. It was exceptionally sophisticated, and had generally good performance. A Zaku II, which came out in the same year, shouldn't be a huge leap above it. At the very least, it should have almost no difference in ground battle if we're talking a realistic scenario like 08th Team. No huge leaps and flying around. With all the visual range fighting, the fire control system shouldn't be as big a difference as the show makes it seem. With all the software based information, I'd think a software update should be enough for most situations. Outside the Earth's atmosphere is probably a much bigger story. Full freedom of movement and the removal of that big gravity element should make a difference in powerplant much more meaningful.
My honorable mention would be the RGM-86R GM III from episode 4 of the Unicorn OVA. During the battle of Torrington Base, most of the GM IIIs performed better than their RMS-179 GM II relatives (last time I remember).
I would say that a sniper unit has a slightly easier job of performing well despite its disadvantages. It is basically just part of a mounted cannon or turret at that point, since it just relied on the airship for movement. No maneuverability required. Of course, this principle also applies to real life snipers. General precision and reliability shot to shot can lead to older items, such as bolt action rifles, to perform admirably.
I don't know why I keep coming back to rewatch this as much as I have. Maybe because it gives me hope that I could still kick butt if I had a Gundam Ground Type to pilot post OYW.
I’m personally an earth federation guy myself... but I still have SOME respect for Zeon (I mostly hate Zeon because they once went way too far by gassing a populated space colony killing both the military people & civilians in it, then dropping it on the earth blowing it up). I do like their variety of mobile suits (I’m not really into the amphibious ones because they are a little too ugly looking... but the Z’gok is a cool looking amphibious mobile suit). If I was to use a Zeon mobile suit... I think I would use a Zaku II with a mostly black with some lime green paint job & use a 100 mm machine gun as the primary weapon for it & also use a short sword type weapon for melee combat (if possible).
The gelgoog marine is my favorite zeon suit. In particular cima's commander type. For the federation, my favorite is the jesta canon variant of the jesta. i have a thing for the gm line of ms and have 20+ gm model kits including the jesta and jesta canon.
How about a Top List of specialized Mobile Suits? You know, not the jack of all trades machines, like the Zaku or GM, Ace Custom versions, or bleeding edge prototypes, but MS or variants that were designed with specific purposes, environments or situations in mind. Things like amphibious operations, rear-line support, tackling of certain enemies, and so on.
Imagine a gundam series that actually took into account production costs, performance, and military strategies instead of the usual hype. God, that'd be so badass.
I think things like production costs were not really mentioned cause back when first gundam came out it was obvious that it drew alot from WWI and WWII and sure enough Zeon ended up down the same path that NAZI germany had. Operation Odessa was basicly D-Day and as Zeon got pushed back like the NAZI they became desprate and threw everything they had into "Wunder" weapons like Mobile armors streching thier factories and resources to the absolute limit. i dont think Zeon would have "Won" the war even if the Gelgoog got rolled out sooner and they had pilots but probobly would have led to somekind of armistence instead and both sides would just turn back and lick thier wounds.
08th MS Team does have a really realistic style but unfortunately it's kind of ruined by the dumb romance tumor plot. There's also 0080 which has a more realistic style than most other series and has some really badass suits, but tactics are practically non-existent, I mean at some point the Feds drop artillery and sniper MSs at CQC range from the Kampfer. So yeah I hope someday we get something like 08th MS Team, just with less romance or better done romance.
Then Zeon would have even MORE KIAs due to the fact that the machine was built for a special intended role and still quite vulnerable to being killed by regular units...
Yeah, figured the Goog would be on here. :P It really seems like it was an amazing machine held back by unseasoned pilots at the time it was made, and even base-level Googs are proving that...much less the ReGelg, who only needed new shoulders and a new backpack to once again menace the big boys.
Back in 2001 I had started my trip down the rabbit hole of the Gundam series. The first Zeon MS I saw was on a gundam fansite in a short clip in the media download section, english subbed, in 240p that took about 5 minutes to download. It was from 0083. The Zeon MS was the Gelgoog Marine. It remains to this day my most favorite MS of all.
The worst machines to pilot/drive is the OZ-08MMS Cancer... Darn thing is just a Metal Crab Nibba! It makes the mobile workers from Iron Blooded Orphans look like God's gifts.
According to MSV Johnny's Zaku 2 Full Bullet destroyed the FA-78 💪 Ultimately skill > technology Holds true in other universes as well. Celestial being kick some series ass with their GN Technology base suits.. but when the GN-X were introduced they had a very hard time fighting them.
To be fair, the solar engines the gundams used were only really superior because they made their own particles, and had trans am to lean on, the only thing that made the GN-X "weaker" was that they were more general purpose, and lacked the hyper destructive gear the gundams were regularly fielding. The GN-X III remedies that by having a ton of specialized units itself, but still only seemed weaker because the celestial being crew were actual ace pilots by that time, and were able to outdo any normal GN-X III pilot
I like how Code Geass added a pack on the back of the machines that houses an Emergency Escape Device that rips the cock pit out of the machine, seems like a lot of Zeon's issue was a shortage of pilots, not saying this would have single handedly fixed that issue but it probably would have helped.
@@scorpionvenom27 same. The only other scene that comes close to that is when the acguy takes out a gundam. But not much compared to the badassness of the asshimar scene.
The Gelgoog is a beast in the right hands. I know this because i piloted a Gelgoog Ground Type (VD) in battle on GBO2 and managed to ward off 2 players while defending a downed ally who wasnt able to fight and they were picking on. I managed to kill one and made the other one run off (the one i killed got smacked on the backswing of my beam naginata and got hit with the offhand end of it). They couldnt move me off their target. Luckily my team mates came over right when the other guy ran off. Im known for jumping in between my down allies and their attackers making myself a shield. The Gelgoog Ground Type (VD) is good for this. Always favored the Gelgoog as my favorite mass produced MS other than the Gouf.
Cool fact here. Not sure who did the music score for 0083, but if you watch the Chuck Norris movie Invasion USA, when Chuck goes chasing after the guys escaping the mall, a version of one of the 0083 songs can be heard.
I used to chuckle at that first scene. I was like. That’s actually kinda wild if that was real. Museum pieces still fighting at war. Then I looked at real life and was shocked.

And if you're forced to de-militarise, it can be used for hauling and construction
Getting attacked by dozens of leos?
Gonna need a Leo for that
Never underestimate the *Underdog*
Gotta love them grunt ms ACE pilots (:
shows that skillz matters a lot more than your tools.
@@qiushuang239 SURE it matters but just not as much.

So the difference between a Gelgoog and a Type-61?
Kinda like how an F-15 or B-52 is old school but the F-86 or B-58 is outdated/obsolete
remember, wars makes tech advancement pacing faster than ever
Was it the one where it was stripped but still had the bazooka?
I love UC grunt suit battles. It shows the regular pilots aren't just target practice for main characters

so if the blue gelgoog was federation replica, it was made with the Gelgoog Marine's specs as a basis?
It's stated to be A, not F. Also broadcast order makes this kinda impossible unless retconned.
More like a gelgoog clone
It was very likely that it was built as a "top gun aggressor" unit to act as a target for federal cadets in training . Having federal ms internals would simply repairs. The same concept probably led to the RMS-106 the need.to keep the aggressor Zaku II units running with a supply chain issue probably led to units with RGM-79 parts field retrofitted in making more like a Zanny. The data getting fed back would have led to the brass requesting AE design a new unit in the zaku line that used RGM standard parts to save on costs.
Maybe the one with federation tech like gundarium armor and magnetic coating on the joints.
Amphibious zeon suits are the *BOMB* !!! Just look at that thickboi crushing some nemos!!
Zeon amphibious MS from the Acguy to the Hygog and beyond, were I believe, the most well designed of all Zeon MS throughout the OYW.
@@WordBearer86 my favorite is the zogok with its large sword rolling around slicing feddie suits and firing its boomerang. Very cool
Acguy and Hygog for me. Especially the Hygog ever since I saw episode 1 of 0080 over a decade and some change ago.
Zock for the win
I was kinda hoping for the Z'Gok just because I remember reading how one was still able to punch clean through either a GM II or III, but I do very much love the elephant taking that spot
Gotta love that hardcore elephant 😆

I hope this getts patron support
Hydra gundam
>the other clunkers the neo-zeon remnants used--
*cough cough* Don't you mean Earth Zeon remnants? The whole reason why they had outdated tech was because they had been waiting for the chance to rejoin Zeon's war of independence ever since the OYW, being abandoned after Operation Odessa like many others we see in both 0083 & 0088. They were however assisted by 2 Zee Zulu's and their pilots gifted to Looni's group by Full Frontal as a fake reassurance, but that's it on the "neo-zeon remnant" side.
Sorry for being pedantic about that small thing.
6:35 It was holding it's own against the Zeta Gundam. Even if it was essentially a Hambrabi inside a Gelgoog shell it would still be impressive.
that blue Gelgoog i think it was featured in the manga "return of Johnny Ridden."
listed features displayed during its appearance;
anti-beam coating
radar-absorbent coating
passive/active targeting scrambler
high-output reactor
low-heat signature
high-mobility in atmosphere
extreme operational range
advance and detailed sensors (post OYW and pre-Zeta specs)
magnetic-coated joints
If you were to do an AU version of this list, I imagine every Gundam frame from Iron Blooded Orphans will be on there as it is literally 300 year-old technology outperforming modern tech in that universe
Don't forget the Tallgeese and Turn A
TechnoKnight technically wing zero would also qualify since it was developed shortly after the tallgeese was, it just didn’t get past the blueprint phase until 15 years later
Unicorn is fair IMHO
while showing the usual Zeon is badass, they also have rare normal Feds aces, like the fearsome Byarlant custom and the awesome Stark Jegan pilot
Gelgoog with federation tech...reminds me of those in Kidou Senshi Gundam MSV-R: Johnny Ridden no Kikan
Gundanium Gelgoog...... an extravagant machine
Galbaldy alpha/beta, Di-Jeh look like gelgoog based MSs.
Oh, sorry, Galbaldy alpha was a zion MS...
Mostly from Pezun before being upgraded to Galbaldy Beta
Action Zaku is the first Zeon MS with federal tech!
I wonder if the pilot was a Karaba-AEUG Veteran of the Gryphs Conflict and First Neo-Zeon War.
Thr satisfaction of an effective yet old machine beating the minovsky out of newer production machines is definitely there.
I wanna mention Return of Johnny Ridden in regards of some cool
Gelgoog action around some timeline bit before Char's Counterattack
Most of the gelgoogs in TROJR were retrofitted with modern weapons and technology.

The Gelgoog Marine will never R.I.P

Love hearing that Zeonic Front music!

I love the Sleeves so much, the idea of the collective of Zeon sympathizers teaming up with old badass antiques is great.
Juaggu still in my heart, even I'm a feddie sided
"Thick boi" got me off guard
The gelgoog marine is my favorite zeon suit. In particular cima's commander type. For the federation, my favorite is the jesta canon variant of the jesta. i have a thing for the gm line of ms and have 20+ gm model kits including the jesta and jesta canon.

How about a Top List of specialized Mobile Suits?
You know, not the jack of all trades machines, like the Zaku or GM, Ace Custom versions, or bleeding edge prototypes, but MS or variants that were designed with specific purposes, environments or situations in mind. @@idiom2805 not to mention shiro is straight up a mad lad lol. He smacked the shit out of the gouf with his gundam arm
Great video, very informative.
Can't wait to see more

Holds true in other universes as well. Celestial being kick some series ass with their GN Technology base suits.. but when the GN-X were introduced they had a very hard time fighting them.
Holds true in real life too.
I'd say plot armor and mc power > everything else including logic but this works too.

I like how Code Geass added a pack on the back of the machines that houses an Emergency Escape Device that rips the cock pit out of the machine, seems like a lot of Zeon's issue was a shortage of pilots, not saying this would have single handedly fixed that issue but it probably would have helped.
