Next time you have random packs like that, Prof, you should film a video with your friends playing Chaos draft! I love seeing that format, and I would love to see your take on how you'd film that 🙂
It's unfortunate to see TCC run an add for a game that is objectifying women so blatantly. Supporting women means showing women in positive representations--not ones that exploit for the male gaze.

This was the first time they printed collector boxes in japan. Personally, I'll gladly trade slightly duller foils for less curling and better print quality on average.
The printing location is why I chose to buy a collector box instead of a draft box. And frankly, I hate that the quality is so noticably different between them that it's affecting my buying decisions.
Japan is the gold standard, so I think it's a great move
I feel like classic and mh1 reprints are propping this set up.
Good news a channel from Australia did some review of the Phyrexia All will be one collectors, same printers.

The fact that if Dominaria Remastered had been called Magic 30th everyone would have been happy is proof we are in the worst timeline.

Prof always says that it’s not worth it to buy boxes and then proceeds to open the most valuable cards in the entire set with startling frequency. He’s still right, it’s just very ironic.
If he hadnt pulled that FoW then the box would have failed the 300 dollar mark. So no over all it was a very Mid opening.

@@alexandercandicedad1355 one card making or breaking a box for value is a bad box in my opinion. If he had pulled anything else in that slot that was less then that 69 dollar difference he would have been under. No guarantee if it always being an expensive card.

@@thedanath Ehhh, it's mostly because the release has pushed the value of the check lands down to the lowest it's been in a long time, and below the $2 threshold he uses to gauge price. If this box opening had been done using release day prices it would have been like $500 from the tutors, and it would have broken even from the check lands. It's actually an incredibly lucky box.

I like how the Professor talks about buying singles but always seems to open fire boxes on the booster box game.
The only thing that saved that box was the FoW.
@@thedanath Not really. Without the Force, he was still only 7 bucks away, which means a medium hit instead of the Force would have broken even
The fact that one of those packs had no value cards until the token says a lot about society.
13:46 if this pack had Chatterfang in it, it would have basically been a jumpstart booster. The number of squirrel focused cards prof got in one pack is insane

One thing I would like to hear personally is a voice over going over maybe cards you'd like or decks that you've been playing recently.

The best use of older packs is to get some friends together and do a chaos draft.

It's still crazy to me that, in Magic, you have to buy a separate and more expensive booster to get alternate-art goodies, while every Pokemon set is filled with two or even three visual variants of cards, plus often a special full-art set *in the holo slot* (NOT the rare slot). For the regular price.
Its almost like Nintendo cares more about their product.

This and pokemon is the most valuable franchise in the world - 90B +. So they are fine taking losses on some product streams to bring people into the ecoystem. Once you love pokemon you will buy: plushies, cards, watch the shows, buy the nintendo consoles to play the games, etc.
If MTG cared more they could probably build an ecosystem of products and fandom versus one of products, which is the sad part
The extended art is only in collector booster the rest you can found in regular booster and for dominaria remaster foil Land are exclusif to collector
@Nicky Mushell Pokemon TCG is operated by Pokemon Company, not Nintendo.
And it's their largest revenue stream, so the shiny rares are definitely not a "handout". I have cards released recently that still hold $600. They just know they don't need to confuse and nickle-and-dime customers.

Two collector packs gave me Izzet extra turns in Last Chance and Time Warp. I was very excited opening them, thinking I pulled valuable cards. Not even $10

I found it hilarious that the Boo token was worth more than any of the other cards in the Commander Legends Baldur's Gate pack
Very cool! It was neat to see all the cards. I'm not one for collector boosters, but it's fun to see them opened.
I was trying to follow along with the individual pack openings, and I think overall he went -$7.50 or so. The Urza's Saga carried hard but even it couldn't undo the financial hole of the old Masters prices. That Baldur's Gate pack had my heart sink as it would have been the first pack they Prof ended up in the net red after, but that Boo token squeaked in and got him back to net ~$0 going in to the last pack!!
I'm living for your attitude in this video. It's really wholesome haha. Sometimes it's easy to get lost with all the various things that we can forget the magic of just, cracking packs for the sake of it just to have a little fun.
Over a year on and I’m still in love with this set. Still working towards filling my binder but I absolutely love cracking packs from this set.
I for one am a huge fan of this kinda of foil. I like that it seems dim. It gives it a more lavish and spohisticated look. Plus, if that's the reason why these foil curl less, then I say we keep it!
I, for one, always appreciate learning the lesson from these videos that it's ALWAYS worth it to buy collector booster boxes provided you happen to pull 3 out of the 5 most expensive cards in the whole set, and preferably multiple of the top 10.
With fees and shipping, you basically have to make 120% of the box value back to break even.
Push shipping cost onto the buyer, simple as
orrrrrrrrrr go to your local game store where you can simply drive to and don't have to ship

As someone who played VERY casually like 10 years ago, everytime I see the Professor do a video and has the prices it just pushes me away from the game lol. I want to get into a TCG (used to play Yugioh until Crystal Beasts first came out and some minor Magic, I do still play Gwent and Marvel Snap online but you don't get in person connections so I'm not counting those) and it's just so hard to get into something like this when all you're seeing is how expensive it is or the whole OGL thing with WOTC, it's tough lol. I'm probably more blowing it out of proportion because I would never be a tournament player, just mainly some Commander casuals but it's still disheartening to see how crazy things are in MTG lol.
BTW love the channel Professor! Like I said above I have only played Magic for a short while and it was very casual but I enjoy the channel! You also helped me find @TeamAPS channel and with all the Yugioh I played growing up it's great watching them! Hope you have continued success!
Same here. I have played this game for more than 14 years on and off, but eventually just felt priced out of the game. Nowadays, I just play pauper and Commander and so do the few friends that remained in my playgroup.

Prof got the exact box I wish I had gotten. I would agree about the printing quality but so many of my packs had duplicate rares in them, but at least I have plenty of tutors now

I have to agree with you on the printers. On AWBO PR day I bought a PR kit, 2 collector boosters, and a set booster box and all my foils were just spot on amazing.

Yes, I heard the foils were flat. I ordered 75 retro foil lands for that reason. I almost could not believe it. But here you are, showing them on camera. "Singles for the win".

BTW. The retro cards have 2 different types of Foils. C/U/ basic lands have one foiling type. R/M have a less common foiling type.
I'm glad that your foils stayed flat as log as they did. I opened a pack 2 days ago and the cards were slightly curved (not horribly so, but noticeably) . It's possible that mine came from a different printer than yours.

That was an awesome box! They need to replicate whatever those Japanese printers did with those collector boosters here in the US. Consistent humidity control would be a good start!

Honestly I like the subtle look of the duller foils more than I like the original super shiny version.

Trying to determine what caused more visible pain- accepting the likely reality that WotC won't use the same printing method as these foils for non-premium products, or promoting a mobile game that probably has a more reasonable monetization model for premium content.
Well I’m four single collector boxes and two cases into DR as of now. One case will be cracked and one will chill for a rainy day. It’s expensive but as a Urza’s block guy coming back the cards are great. The hits are even more amazing. Great set!
WotC's foiling process sucks so much all foil cards should be marked as "damaged" when sold online.
Normally I'd agree but something wild is going on with the collector boosters for Dom Remastered: they are amazing quality.

@@TolarianCommunityCollege That's because all of them were printed in Japan, not the US. The foiling is also better, as it's less metal looking and more of that classic rainbow foiling. You can really see the difference when you pull a foil out of one of the draft boxes and compare.
I'm very happy when a box contains cards of same or higher value than the price. I've opened some Digimon boxes and I never got a box that matches the price.
While I get the need for TH-camrs to have sponsorships, part of me was really hoping the 'ad read' this time would be "This video brought to you by Jimmy! That's my friend, the one who gave me the box we're opening. Okay, time to open packs!"
I know it would've been more work on the editor but I would've reeeeeealy loved to hear the ASMR goodness of that 2015 cardboard rip. My brain was confused when my eyes saw but my ears didn't perceive that special sound. PS I think your editor and team are tops and realize this is a pretty niche scenario
My Dominaria Remaster box only had 100$ value in it for the 172$ I paid. Oof!

OMG that Wormfang Drake reminded me of a match i had with some friends once! I had a bunch of random cards so we kind of drafted it to create decks and compete with each other. We were in 3 or 4 people. My friend ended up choosing my cards to make what actually was a really close to 1to1 black pauper deck. I had 2 Wormfang Drakes who were decent flying attackers given it was almost a limited competition. I don't remember the card I used, but I did something to tutor a card, and I named Wormfang Drake, because 1 died and I had another, and when I looked up my deck I said "Where's my Drake??" which became an internal joke when something bad happened while playing, because I forgot to put the second one! I lost, but it was actually a very funny loss. I wish I had more details but this match was in 2013. OMG this was 10 years ago.
The prices for ANYTHING Magic are insane. It’s why I’ve switched to Pokémon as a collector. So many more AFFORDABLE products to choose from, and most turn a profit in a few years.
TRUE!!!!!! The Dom Remastered CB cards have to become the new benchmark in card quality for MTG products going forward. The Japanese printer did amazing work on this product.

I have a 12"x14"x4" metal brief case thing I keep full of assorted sealed boosters. I just keep a few as I go, year-to-year. For my 30th birthday I got to open up a few MH2, Ice Age, Planechase, TSR, and half a dozen AFR packs. Save those randos for a rainy day or a chaos draft!!

Bought a draft box of dominaria remastered along with one DR collectors pack and two more DR draft packs and ended up pulling two foil borderless Yawgmoths and about a play set of both worldly tutor and enlightened tutor plus a retro border vamp tutor

My local retail store marked them on clearance. I got 12 of them for $120…. Got a few tutors and a foil force of will.
On my mind a DMR collector box is a 48 (4*12) draft booster box with premium rares. Looking at it that way, It's actually one normal box for 300*36/48=225 dollars. This is 21% more, assuming draft box is 185 dollars. That means the premium rares should have a minimal average premium rate of 21% to logically buy a collector pack over draft packs (at these prices mind you). At that point you see why it's achievable in some sense. This calculation assumes prices and the current DMR set, as content of draft and collector packs can vary, and it assumes worthless uncommons which does have an impact!
we drafted dmr once. it would be nice to be able to buy some. wizards says they print enough supply for demand yet its mostly out of stock everywhere the week it came out.
