Prof I have a conspiracy theory and I might be completely off base. A great way to cut out local game stores. Without cutting out local game stores directly. Would be to start the price super high. Stick game stores with overpriced draft products. That they can't sell. Then tank the price low to online mega stores. That will kill draft and standard game play. Then focus on direct to consumer Commander decks. That will make profits rain down like "Cats and Dogs". Anyway I love the content. Thank you!

Ravnics remastered, for instance, has a great draft environment while it doesn't have the best value. However, I really don't like karlov manor. I did 2 pre releases for it and I honestly think it's the worst prerelease I've been to. Granted, I don't think I've ever been to a bad prerelease, but I still didn't like it nearly as much as many other sets. A friend of mine believes it's because of play boosters and the bloated amount of rares, however I still think it's just been a bad set.

Clues are terrible artifacts and theres almost no cards that make use of them or produce effects from using them. The flavor of ravnica isnt even there. I agree with some of the conspiracy theorists that this was supposed to be a Capenna set. And even if it wasnt, it should have been because the only Detectives in Ravnica are usually Dimir Agents anyway and Lasav doesnt really have a part to play in this set.
And think last set I bought a box of lost caverns and made almost double my money took handful of cards to my local and only had to put few bucks in for another box. Play boosters is not good idea the pull rates are stupid low compared to set booster and collector boosters.
Sadly professor has always been on the side of pushing reprints, pushing prints and distributing cards to EVERYBODY for accessibility. This is the result of these, how can people not see the other side of the coin lol
Yeah all these content creators love preaching about the need to make every card worthless to make the game more affordable. They don't understand anything. 😂 The game is LESS affordable if player collections have no value. Plus stores go bankrupt if they can't make money with singles or sealed. Not to mention no one wants to draft at 20$ because normal people don't like losing money. 10-15 years ago when I drafted a lot, it was in huge part because the cards I opened had decent value. Like if you open 20$ of value in 3 packs, that means you can draft again "for free" and that stuff matters. If you're always losing 20$ you won't draft very often.

Hey there prof. I’ve been wanting to leave this comment for a long while and frankly haven’t had the courage to for some time. I think it’s fitting that I leave it on the series that got me into your channel. I started playing magic in 2018, which is almost 6 years ago now. The first video if yours I ever watched was the GRN booster box game. I think you’ll understand that magic was truly a game of joy for me. I made friends I never thought I’d have. I had the best time the first two years I played this wonderful game. Covid came and put me into a long season of depression, like many others. I left a comment some time ago (a couple years at this point) about how I was depressed and that your videos were helping me get through it. And that was true - your videos gave me something to look forward to every week. I wanted to thank you Prof, for giving me that. I’m sure I’m not along when I say that your content has done many amazing things for many magic the gathering players. Thats only part of the point though. Your channel, and by extension, this game, got me to where I am today. I grew up with Magic the gathering and there isn’t a person I associate more with the glory days of my time playing than you. From a Magic player to another, thank you. You have done more for me than many people without even knowing it. I’m no longer depressed, and I can look back and remember how you and your frequent videos gave me something to smile and laugh at - a rare commodity a couple years ago. I remember watching the video you bravely released about depression (something I could never fathom doing). Strangely, that video gave me the motivation to keep going when I was at my lowest. Hello professor. If you want a little laugh, here in France the booster box of Murder at Karlov Manor is sold for 200€ (around 215$) on Amazon and 240€ (around 258$) at my local game store ... For the same price i can get a Set booster box AND a bundle of my choice ... Anyway, i have been subscribed since 2 years and channels like yours makes me really happy that i pushed my english learning this far. Yeah, the LGS sales prices make it difficult not to go with Cardmarket for all purchases, not just singles. At time of writing, I can see several offers there for about 120€ per box.
@@ospero7681 Even with the currently horrible SEK to EUR exchange rate, it's a lot more expensive to buy ANYTHING from local stores here, be it online or physical :( I've really tried The single location in my area that even sold singles in their physical store stopped doing so years ago at this point. At least the special guest version is more like $6, which is more than a lot of "bulk" mythics. Edit: I was curious and it's worth more than 18 of the 23 mythics in MKM.

My son and I always open one box of a new standard set, just for the joy of cracking packs and doing a couple winston drafts. I got my box of MKM play boosters at the cut-rate price of $118.99 from one of the big ebay sellers. Our experience was similar to yours. Our most valuable mythic was under $2. Best card in the box was $8. And we even hit 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th most valuable rares in the set (in terms of normal-border prices), yet they only range from $5-8, and the surveil lands will surely come down in time. I really can't justify doing this anymore.

Here in Canada including taxes, a play booster box cost 240$CAD. I mean, it is the same price I paid for a Master25 box five years ago. Play box are barely selling for this set on my biggest online LGS store in the country. I think it is just overly expensive for what it is.
I'm from Germany and I'm just stunned. The prices here went up from 4,5€ per pack to 5,5€ per pack - that is more then the price of set-boosters before! I won't buy any sealed products anymore, even if I used to collect the bundle cases.
Yeah, I even saw boosters for 6€ in some stores in Germany :/ From now on, if I want to buy some packs to crack open, I'll only choose Sets from before 2024. Don't even care if draft or set-boosters, both are better than Play-boosters
He could've actually had quite a bit more. At the time of recording, Slime Against Humanity (a common) was going for over $2 (almost $3) and he skipped all commons. Though it still would've been short, the total should be approximately $2-$14 more depending on if and how many he pulled.
Curiosity got the better of me and I calculated that over half the combined "value" you got between these 2 boxes were just from surveil/shock lands... ouch.

Love it took half a box to find a rare more valuable (and just barely) than the uncommon in box 1. They really knocked it out of the park to celebrate the price increase!

I think Prof has said most all of what needs be said about the boosters, box prices, and his booster box game is a channel fave obviously, nothing for me to add there. But let me just say that the playlist of music he runs on these videos always gets me going, I'm jamming out to Arena while watching Prof open packs, and Future Cha Cha is maybe my favorite track on here. Professor: Long time watcher/supporter. I'd really love a Dies to Removal episode where you and Vince talk about how you feel having driven hype and excitement for products, now that we are in a phase where cost and power level of the game is so skewed.
The timing of the video makes this interesting. The surveil lands just jumped up in price due to modern jumping on them. Not enough to make much of a difference, but would have made it a little less pathetic.
Hey Prof, another metric that that I think would be good to track in these videos is # of packs that break even or profit when compared to the retail price on a single pack. thanks for going through these things so we don't have to!
Rav remastered, although super skeptical upon purchasing, has treated me very well. I've managed to pull 3 retro foil shocks, 2 retro shocks, and 3 regular shocks, all out of a a few 3 pack draft boosters. I quit while I was ahead.
I've only bought 4 boxes so far, one was CMR, two were MB and one was Jumpstart. I've got a bit higher value on each, thanks to few specific cards, like Mana Drain and Opposition Agent in CMR (along with Ramos, Spectator Seating and Command Beacon), Demonic Tutor (and Scourge of the Throne while it was still cca 10x more expensive than it is now lol) in MB, and Elesh Norn and Torment of Hailfire in other box, and Phyrexian Tower, Vito, Muxus, Cathar's Crusade in JMP. But watching these videos, and knowing that if I didn't get one of these cards, I'd go heavily under the value of the box is what dissuades me from getting more boxes always. X_x I still plan to get one JMP2 box, and maybe CLB too for the heck of it. -_- I'd probably cave in if they were available here and at reasonable prices, but since I have to order them from other countries... on top of that, there's barely anyone to trade with. More recently I've got ZNR bundle for 15E, got two Pathways and Moraug, so those three alone cover the price I've paid for the bundle... but if I've had paid it 30-35E for how much it usually goes...
I got a commander pre con yesterday (first magic cards I bought in over a year) and two mystery booster packs. I got a $60 card from the mystery pack. I'll never sell it, but it feels good

The change to play boosters is so frustrating. Besides the increase in price, it leads to things like Jace Wielder of Mysteries ruining your draft out of sheer chance (I say this as someone who was lucky enough to get one in prerelease). As much as I appreciate WoTC saving limited (even if it is probably so they can keep making “draft chaff” cards), it’s frustrating seeing it not only increase in price, but also degrade in quality, at least in my opinion.
So for my interaction to help the channel, I want to propose a video: please do one on how prices are set for singles early on. Vaguely later on you have a bunch of market things like a few small sellers deciding they have ten of those vein rippers, and better to get $6 now than maybe $7 when 50 others sell first on a listing site. Bonus would be going into some of the price setting for reprints of special new collector things. I've enjoyed your booster box games, and you've generally sold me on buying singles from your vids these past few years. As you are a "prof" I think you would entertain and educate many people if you could explain a bit of it. (And no, I'm not trying to get your face and case in a special edition of MKM if you dig too deeply into a hidden illuminati price fixing hidden on the Plane of New Capenna who then ship you off to be Compleated. Just the basic initial price setting, whether by cabal, chaos guess, or some other method!)

Standard sets have not been worth it for years, I agree. They were not worth it when they were $100, even less nowadays with a watered down rares designed to get multiple of in a booster. That's why the set boosters were so good, the fact that the sets were not designed for them.
Mtg was my ecsape from yugioh 4 years ago; now that every format too expensive or power crept, and even edh isnt casual, i figured “mine as well go back to yugioh if games gonna be quick af anyways in mtg”. I will say yugioh reprinted mad staples and i got a meta deck for like $100 or so. Woild he nice if ppl played edh with precons and lower power commanders but god forbid the only casual format was actually casual.
UK so sterling prices, Bundle box £43 - Card value £12 maybe, watched two people at the table open bundles same story - i enjoy opening (set booster) so with play boosters I will not be buying sealed (other than possible MH3) FYI my local game store saw it lowest sales this set, down around 40% for booster box pre sales! Well done Hasbro, well done.
So, a couple of things... first the collapse of standard means unless a card moves the needle in commander it doesnt have value. Second, I guess we need to think about where we derive value from booster boxes... is it just the value of the cards inside for resale or is it to play the game as intended?
Battlebond was GREAT! Legit the best time I have ever had at a draft! Maybe we can go back there instead of visiting Ravnica for the 17th time? Maybe even at a reasonable price?
Dang. This is a big reason I don't buy boxes, bundles, or many sealed packs. It's just not worth it. I'll buy packs as I want to have fun at random moments, but I mainly stick to singles. Ridiculous.
The first draft at my local had 7 people, strange considering the pre-release attendance was higher than normal. The draft had 6 myhtics, one from the list, and all abut 2 were the same colour. I am not 100% but it does feel like some packs are seeded to a couple of colours.
Honestly, my impression of the card pool for Murders was pretty depressing. I was trying to build a new Arena Brawl deck using the new cards and very few were worth including.
I almost never play the Hasbro MTG lottery, but when I picked up singles during pre-release I decided to buy a bundle. The sad thing is that I had almost the same re-sell value in 9 packs than prof had in 36. I didn't even pull one Slime Against Humanity. My lucky pulls were Undercity Sewers (Borderless) and a surprising Crashing Footfalls (Guest Artist Borderless)! It is a fun set but damn, 140 for 36 packs of this is nuts.
Most new sets I buy two collector boosters, as my collection is too large, but I like cracking packs. I mostly play Arena. The two Markov Collector Boosters were the least impressive Collector Boosters I have bought, both in terms of value and play value. I likely would have found a similar level of value putting that same money in Arena cosmetics :D
Hey Prof, love your videos, your awesome! But at $140/box it's still way cheaper than what most of us Canadians pay. Set boxes for MKM are $210+taxes. Ravnica Remastered is $260+taxes...
In Belgium, i have been in an LGS where they keep the prices of draft as before. This means that they have to lower the prizes, i mean the awards for the top players of the night. They may change it in the future, tho.

Here in Canada including taxes, a play booster box cost 240$CAD. I mean, it is the same price I paid for a Master25 box five years ago. Play box are barely selling for this set on my biggest online LGS store in the country. I think it is just overly expensive for what it is.

I'm from Germany and I'm just stunned. The prices here went up from 4,5€ per pack to 5,5€ per pack - that is more then the price of set-boosters before! I won't buy any sealed products anymore, even if I used to collect the bundle cases.
Yeah, I even saw boosters for 6€ in some stores in Germany :/ From now on, if I want to buy some packs to crack open, I'll only choose Sets from before 2024. Don't even care if draft or set-boosters, both are better than Play-boosters
He could've actually had quite a bit more. At the time of recording, Slime Against Humanity (a common) was going for over $2 (almost $3) and he skipped all commons. Though it still would've been short, the total should be approximately $2-$14 more depending on if and how many he pulled.
So he'd only be $60 short instead of $80

Love it took half a box to find a rare more valuable (and just barely) than the uncommon in box 1. They really knocked it out of the park to celebrate the price increase!

The timing of the video makes this interesting. The surveil lands just jumped up in price due to modern jumping on them. Not enough to make much of a difference, but would have made it a little less pathetic.

Rav remastered, although super skeptical upon purchasing, has treated me very well. I've managed to pull 3 retro foil shocks, 2 retro shocks, and 3 regular shocks, all out of a a few 3 pack draft boosters. I quit while I was ahead.
For those on the oregon coast, Sports Card 101 in Lincoln City always keeps the price at $115 for mtg booster boxes.

I've only bought 4 boxes so far, one was CMR, two were MB and one was Jumpstart.
I've got a bit higher value on each, thanks to few specific cards, like Mana Drain and Opposition Agent in CMR (along with Ramos, Spectator Seating and Command Beacon), Demonic Tutor (and Scourge of the Throne while it was still cca 10x more expensive than it is now lol) in MB, and Elesh Norn and Torment of Hailfire in other box, and Phyrexian Tower, Vito, Muxus, Cathar's Crusade in JMP.
But watching these videos, and knowing that if I didn't get one of these cards, I'd go heavily under the value of the box is what dissuades me from getting more boxes always. X_x
I still plan to get one JMP2 box, and maybe CLB too for the heck of it. -_-
I'd probably cave in if they were available here and at reasonable prices, but since I have to order them from other countries... on top of that, there's barely anyone to trade with.
More recently I've got ZNR bundle for 15E, got two Pathways and Moraug, so those three alone cover the price I've paid for the bundle... but if I've had paid it 30-35E for how much it usually goes...

I got a commander pre con yesterday (first magic cards I bought in over a year) and two mystery booster packs. I got a $60 card from the mystery pack. I'll never sell it, but it feels good

The change to play boosters is so frustrating. Besides the increase in price, it leads to things like Jace Wielder of Mysteries ruining your draft out of sheer chance (I say this as someone who was lucky enough to get one in prerelease). As much as I appreciate WoTC saving limited (even if it is probably so they can keep making “draft chaff” cards), it’s frustrating seeing it not only increase in price, but also degrade in quality, at least in my opinion.

I think commons have Slimes against Humanity which costs quite a bit, so it's worth checking for those

Idk how the prof isn’t over 1 mil subs. He’s got the best most creative and funniest channel by far out of any mtg community creators.
So for my interaction to help the channel, I want to propose a video: please do one on how prices are set for singles early on. Vaguely later on you have a bunch of market things like a few small sellers deciding they have ten of those vein rippers, and better to get $6 now than maybe $7 when 50 others sell first on a listing site.
Bonus would be going into some of the price setting for reprints of special new collector things.
I've enjoyed your booster box games, and you've generally sold me on buying singles from your vids these past few years. As you are a "prof" I think you would entertain and educate many people if you could explain a bit of it.
(And no, I'm not trying to get your face and case in a special edition of MKM if you dig too deeply into a hidden illuminati price fixing hidden on the Plane of New Capenna who then ship you off to be Compleated. For roughly the same price i got a heavy hitters box and all the precons. Pretty fun set. Like specialized helmets . Knucklehead is a funny card

Standard sets have not been worth it for years, I agree. They were not worth it when they were $100, even less nowadays with a watered down rares designed to get multiple of in a booster. That's why the set boosters were so good, the fact that the sets were not designed for them.
Mtg was my ecsape from yugioh 4 years ago; now that every format too expensive or power crept, and even edh isnt casual, i figured “mine as well go back to yugioh if games gonna be quick af anyways in mtg”. I will say yugioh reprinted mad staples and i got a meta deck for like $100 or so. Woild he nice if ppl played edh with precons and lower power commanders but god forbid the only casual format was actually casual.
Its quite surprising that the set dual lands are one of the most valuable items in the whole set.

UK so sterling prices, Bundle box £43 - Card value £12 maybe, watched two people at the table open bundles same story - i enjoy opening (set booster) so with play boosters I will not be buying sealed (other than possible MH3) FYI my local game store saw it lowest sales this set, down around 40% for booster box pre sales! Well done Hasbro, well done.

So, a couple of things... first the collapse of standard means unless a card moves the needle in commander it doesnt have value. Second, I guess we need to think about where we derive value from booster boxes... is it just the value of the cards inside for resale or is it to play the game as intended?
Battlebond was GREAT! Legit the best time I have ever had at a draft! Maybe we can go back there instead of visiting Ravnica for the 17th time? Maybe even at a reasonable price?

Dang. This is a big reason I don't buy boxes, bundles, or many sealed packs. It's just not worth it. I'll buy packs as I want to have fun at random moments, but I mainly stick to singles. Ridiculous.
The first draft at my local had 7 people, strange considering the pre-release attendance was higher than normal. The draft had 6 myhtics, one from the list, and all abut 2 were the same colour. I am not 100% but it does feel like some packs are seeded to a couple of colours.

Honestly, my impression of the card pool for Murders was pretty depressing. I was trying to build a new Arena Brawl deck using the new cards and very few were worth including.
I almost never play the Hasbro MTG lottery, but when I picked up singles during pre-release I decided to buy a bundle. The sad thing is that I had almost the same re-sell value in 9 packs than prof had in 36. I didn't even pull one Slime Against Humanity. My lucky pulls were Undercity Sewers (Borderless) and a surprising Crashing Footfalls (Guest Artist Borderless)! It is a fun set but damn, 140 for 36 packs of this is nuts.

Because most of the cards from your precon are Arena legal, i built it as a Brawl deck.

Most new sets I buy two collector boosters, as my collection is too large, but I like cracking packs. I mostly play Arena. The two Markov Collector Boosters were the least impressive Collector Boosters I have bought, both in terms of value and play value. I likely would have found a similar level of value putting that same money in Arena cosmetics :D
Hey Prof, love your videos, your awesome! But at $140/box it's still way cheaper than what most of us Canadians pay. Set boxes for MKM are $210+taxes. Ravnica Remastered is $260+taxes...

In Belgium, i have been in an LGS where they keep the prices of draft as before. This means that they have to lower the prizes, i mean the awards for the top players of the night. They may change it in the future, tho.
