Hey Rich, I worked for Tag McLaren in Woking, England as my first job after graduating from 1990 to 1992. I discovered recently that some software we wrote all those years ago is still used by the maintenance staff to service the McLaren F1 supercar - the software/hardware was also used to program and diagnose the formula one race cars of that era - the Ayrton Senna era. Who knew that in this world of almost everything being disposable there is something that I worked on that is still being actively used. I can't think of anything else in my career that has had that level of longevity. Oh, and after Senna there are no great F1 drivers :-)

Most people don’t know this but the reason you need some play in the battery constraints is they actually change size when charging and discharging. Anyone can easily verify this by putting them in a vise with a load cell when charging, or alternatively use a micrometer before and after. It’s large at about 0.5% max difference.

Just a comment on the events at 3:59 - a bench power supply with both voltage and current limits is a great thing here. Set the voltage limit, set the current limit fairly low, let it trickle charge the battery until it's high enough for the normal charger to be happy.
That said, doesn't look like it would have made a difference here since there were some cells that were completely shot.

This is a good proof of concept, i wonder if another proof if concept could be made using those rigid prismatic cells, though i dont know if they make any in the proper form factor needed.
This would not really net you that much, it would make assembly much easier, but it would probably reduce the maximum current available, which i dont know if thats needed for this battery
I have these large 3.2v 280Ah cells cost me about $1800 for 16 of them and i use them for whole house UPS(in an off-building, i'm not storing 10+kwh of battery inside my house), though i bet they make thinner ones that are the same height that would fit in this enclosure.
I plan on getting another 32 of them to build a plug in solar assisted gas/propane hybrid( maybe dual fuel propane because i have 2x1000gal tanks, one right next to my garage)

My 2019 Mercedes S63 has the same Li Ion battery from A123 systems. Mercedes only charges 1800 for the replacement for what it is worth. The only rational for this battery is weight savings. If you can work your way around the Mclaren software you might be able to code the Li Ion battery nannies to turn off and just use an AGM battery. That is what I am going to do when my battery eventually dies. Sounds like Mclaren is an even bigger rip off than Mercedes which I guess is not surprising. Would love to source a new A123 Li Ion unit but sounds like they only sell to OEM manufacturers.

A couple of milliamps for a few hours can revive a dead battery. But watch out with Li-ion batteries, once they have been deep discharged, they have definite dendrite damage and that means the battery can still work for a while and then just go dead real quick when the dendrites start to touch each other after a few more charges.

Did you add the metal plates in between each cell ? (looks like you didnt) - they are needed even in normal operation to prevent excessive expansion and damage to the battery cell. Just like the pouch cells on a Nissan leaf - is needed to keep a battery alive for any decent length of time....the Leaf uses strong bolts and nuts to compress the whole thing together.....

Brother the pouches individually are cells more than two cells and up is a battery. Originally a pile. The BMS can monitor each cell for voltage and also charge them individually so that all the cells come up to the designated voltage. For most lithium cells fully discharged voltage 3 volts fully charged 4.2 volts. I’m amazed at the price of houses in the US in Australia an average house on a 1/4 to 1/5 of an achar block is well over 1 Million $AU the exchange rate is currently $1US = $1.55AU. Our kids will have a very hard time buying a house. Love your work not usually pedantic but cells. Wobbels the mad Aussie.
