This is my favorite video ever! Time to clean up my basement and create a shop! You have the perfect mix of simplifying work and amplifying perfection in the details!
Holy cow! This is the first video of yours I’ve come across! Nothing short of amazing! I can’t wait to dive into some of these projects that will fit with my theme this year. Thank you for all the great information and well done tutorials ❤❤
I have to admit. I was hesitant to watch this video, but I'm glad I did. You are skilled craftsman. I like making props but not too good at painting. Thanks...pex
My favorite is the scythe! 🕓 46:38 The rusted metal looks so good and the hot glue bolts/screws are so realistic. Also the scythe is just cool in general, looking like a rare bird.
I always say that your work is on another level. That chest is awesome but that smoldering log is so realistic that it is incredible......The baking soda idea to make the paint thicker is just plain brilliance!....That Scythe is so realistic......I am definitely going to build one of those...
Given you use various adhesive, a video on their use would be great. One of the early projects seemed to be all CA glue; another early one was contact cement. (my guess is that I will see even more adhesives as I keep watching these). This is what made me think that adhesives could be group by ways other than just material (which itself would still be useful to know).
I have to say that, not only do I appreciate that you recycle stuff you have around the house, but also that you admit building mistakes and show how to fix them. Love the video and look forward to seeing more!
OMG! My husband retired for a company that still makes Sythes and yours looked so real. Company name: Midwest Rake, formerly known as Seymour Manufacturing Co. I was fascinated by how realistic using just simple materials. Only thing I saw missing was a small hand peg on the handle mounted about halfway down. Great Job!
@FabWorks80 - I have a big glass jug I saved from a Riunite Wine bottle, and another big bottle from Carlo Rossi (with the little handle) that I've been saving for just this build!
I made a candle stick phone with a round candy tin for the head of the transmitter and a plastic shot glass from dollar tree for the cone . easy to find. and the bottom was s metal ceiling light fixtures piece from an old light fixtures. they still sell new ones at hardware stores. and the same pvc pipe for the stick I used a wall pipe or conduit mount for the ear piece hanger. the earpiece was a top to a break fluid bottle cut off.
Maple jugs would be cool as a tapered candle holder with wax dripping down it, with an apothecary label on the front of them, then painted to have a gothic look.
Just wanted to pop by and say thank you… I used your heat gun trick to soften up my PVC piping that I had in the house and I painted it and added twigs from a tree that just got cut down recently and put it out front with a bat on it.wonderful homemade old-fashioned broom. Definitely appreciated your help. Thank you so much.❤
Your videos are always good but this one in particular is stuffed full of creative inspiration and with every project I was thinking "oh, I wanna make that" 😄 To save my "to try" list getting any longer than it already is, I'm restricting my choice (for now 😏) to my absolute favourite - the bamboo, which was amazing! 😍 👍
This is my first of your videos and I am so impressed. Your tutorial, your attention to step-by-step and not assuming everyone is up to your level and skipping and your general friendly and polite manner put me at ease and not like an idiot. Amazing results by the way; especially the torch at the end. I can't wait to look at what else you have done. Liked, subscribed and thoroughly enjoyed, thanks mate!
Regarding authentic looking ancient hardware by the way, if you don't already know about them, Clouterie Rivierre makes Blued Steel Diamond-Head Forged Nails that are machine made Roman style nails. They make great ancient looking builds. I use them in woodworking projects. Use them as is, or cut the heads off for just the look. I get mine (US) at Lee Valley Tools. Lee Valley also sells cut nails which are an early form of nails from about the early 1800s till wire nails were invented. They look old timely too. Enjoying the marathons. Great time of year for them!
I'm thoroughly impressed by your video! Excellent production and narration. Your builds are on another level, yet they seem so simple-a true mark of professionalism. Completely blown away!
@@VanOaksProps I made the skulls staff.... didn't have to varnish the pipe - put saw blade side up in a vice to get good scraping, then torched the whole thing until golden brown. The heat from blow torch really helped coloring and warping. I made a dye from some diluted acrylic paints and dyed the raffia. I also added dry pasta shells inside the skulls to make it have a rattle sound. 3 skulls was the winner for me. Thanks again for your video. Been fun watching your work!
A few years ago the independent film company I was Prop Master for made a short movie about a haunted antique phone. The phone's design was based on a real type of antique phone and the Production Company found a person that had one BUT he wanted $200 a day to use it, not to mention at the end of the film the phone gets destroyed! One of my Prop Team 3D printed the parts of the phone that could not be purchased on line and I made 4 of them for the movie. One Hero one that had a working dial and moving Hand Set Cradle, one Hero that looked good just sitting, one stunt one that could be thrown around and one "Broken" one for use in the final scene. I am not sure but the one with on moving parts, just 3D printed ABS probably only cost $10 in material.
8:36 that EVA foam.... for anyone that doesn't know, if you can't get your plastic to stick to other plastic, like roughing it up with sandpaper or scratches doesn't work (odd curves/valleys) use a bit of EVA foam.. the foam glues to plastic (sandwiching plastic to plastic) very well.
Any chance you could explain to the hubby why I keep “junk, and garbage”. 😂 He has seen me get excited when I get this look 🤔 run away, and come back with the perfect item. For what I /we are working on. Not to say he does crafts or decorations, but my hoarding “junk and garbage”, has been beneficial to him as well., because I saved the things he threw away and I retrieved. Still he maintains that I store “junk and garbage”. I see that you too must have an area you store stuff that you know will be the perfect thing to fit your project. If only I could convince him! 😂😂
I tried CR2032 on my 5volt flame bulb, started to work then just blink. Either its the no name batteries from Amazon or the circuit wants more. AA batteries worked so i might try some name brand 2032 before going back to the AA's
Brilliant work! You are and excellent instructor! Jeez, I was half way through the phone build before I noticed something was different about your left hand. Is that a comment on my awareness, or your ability? Maybe both?
Hey great video i do have an idea that could lead to a funny story. So your dynamite have an lde light on one of the fuse. The with a candle prop or that burning log set it up as an Old prospector place the crate of tnt or a candle don't and pass out and if you have a timer you make the fuse light at random times.
Derek, I liked the pirate's chest prop, but thought it might look a little better with handles. How difficult would it be to add handles on the sides? Would it be better to have some mechanism, like some kind of bolts through the side to be a better anchoring mechanism?
Love the video - I have a question... at 1:09:16... how does it allow for easy turning on and off? I see the switch on the cell battery pack, but don't see any easy way to turn it on and off without pulling the bulb each time, unless that's the way you do it.
Derek, what vinyl cutter do you suggest for a hobbyist maker wanting to make DIY tombstones like you? And what program are you using for the lettering? Is this all spelled out in another video? Thanks
Not only creative but, an EXCELLENT instructor.
THIS is why I save scraps of stuff in boxes... Justtttt innnnn caseeeee. Lololol
Hahaha! Same! lol
I have found my people.
I really appreciate how well you explain what you do. I also appreciate your voice. I would listen to you narrate absolutely anything.
So nice of you!

idk how I just found your channel now, I've been watching craft videos for years and I loooooooooooove yours. You beat out 99.99% of what's out there
Wow, thank you and welcome to the channel!

Going to watch this and then I’m off to Home Depot. Messy day today with coating and monster mud and the like.
I love the technique you used to make the medieval torch look like metal! I want to try this out on my store bought cauldron.
My favorite is the scythe! 🕓 46:38
The rusted metal looks so good and the hot glue bolts/screws are so realistic. Also the scythe is just cool in general, looking like a rare bird.
This is by far a top-notch talented and creative instructor. I love every one of these projects!
Thanks so much!

Take a pipe cutter and cut almost halfway into the pvc pipe then heat with a heat gun. This makes really nice bamboo. 😊
Thank you! That is so awesome!!
I needed the Dynamite vlog, our theme is Miners & Moonshiners!! Thank you Derek!!! 💥🧨💥
I hadn't seen the bamboo one before - looks fantastic!
As always, another great video with amazing tips and tricks. 👍👍😊😊😊

One trick i do for the leather look is to place my wrinkled foil on top of the foam. I then use an iron to imprint the texture.
I'll have to give that a try! Thanks for the tip.

add air pressure to the pipe. the knuckles will go outside. heat resistant tie warp in the middle and you get more the structure of bamboe.

Should've had a cut scene after making the phone and said "Sarah, can you connect me to floyd?"
I like how aware you are that your longer videos are build background noice.😂
The torch!!! What's a wago connector?

Are wago connectors you used for the medieval torch different than traditional wrap the wires with electrical tape?
They do the same job. It's just what I had.
