19TheFallen Well, in the Legends (and Canon, to an extent) a favorite method of Palpatine‘s was to force them to fight their families in gladiator fights to the death.
@youtube sucks It's because the way Vader is pronouncing words in this movie. In the original trilogy, he never really talked slow and he put more emphasis on certain words, as well as a slight accent. Here, he talks slower, and his voice effect changes his voice pitch

Governor Tarkin, the Grand Moff, has a much higher rank. Krennic is technically not part of the military, but he is the project director for the construction of the Death Star Project. Krennic simply wanted to maintain control over the weapon after it was built, and have credit for the project.

Rogue One was a teriffic addition to the series, and they flat-out nailed Vader brilliantly. The final scene with Vader is as iconic as any scene in Star Wars history.
"So I pulled myself out of my bath, the ONE thing that helps me relax, put on my whole elaborate outfit, walk all the way down here... just so I could listen to you whine about authority decisions that aren't even up to me in the first place. And people wonder why I'm so grumpy all the time."
Darth Vader works outside and in parallel to the imperial chain of command. Because of that, the high ranking imperial officers don't like him, since they still have to respect and fear him, even though Vader has no formal military rank.
Hayden had nothing to do with this on any level. His acting was so poor it was painful to watch. All they wanted was a good looking face. That's all they got.
Remember in The Empire Strikes Back, when he said, "Apology accepted, Captain Needa" to the latter's corpse immediately after strangling him to death with the Force? Yeah, this is quite in character.
let's hope they bring that idea in the Kenobi show, maybe we can see a glimpse of it as Rogue one was never a Vader focused movie yet we still be able to see him kick ass on tht hallway scene lol
A movie could be OK, making it a series where we get the odd saber battle after watching him track and corner the jedi would be better, more room for his intimidation to be shown to greater effect
"I built you a death star." "And this gives you.... power over me?" "What is this?" "Your command and intelligence have been important, till now." "What are you?" "I'm the Jedi's reckoning, here to end the borrowed time they've all been living on." "You're pure evil..." "I'm necessary evil."
Now THIS is how you introduce a badass villain. Everything is nearly perfect. The atmosphere, the shadows, the music, the menacing appearance, and many more things make this one of the best villain reveal scenes of all time
I'm glad Darth Vader is in a different universe. If he were able to come here, AND have his powers, I don't think we could do much to him. That just made me think of a "what if" comic book line, but I doubt I could put it on paper, cause I seem to have A.D.D. or something.

“You seem unsettled” this line I swear sends chills because krennic is terrified and Vader knows this and feels it without krennic even showing it and then Vader just shuts down his whining about tarken and chokes him and basically tells him to shut up and go about his day and spares his life.
I love when Vader closes the distance between him and Krennic, and the latter’s visible discomfort with this violation of personal space. What Vader said without saying a word was, “Choose your next words carefully. I could kill you, you know.” When Vader turns to leave, Krennic feels emboldened enough to ask for a favor, until Vader reminds him who holds all the power in this situation. Great body language from both actors!
6'8, black clad, cyborg, space wizard who is known for murdering people at the slightest provocation comes walking up to you in his dark castle on a lava planet. Vader: You seem unsettled...
@@medievalgirl002 yea WE know that Vader is human but everyone else in the Star Wars story does not because the empire said that anakin died during order 66 I think that’s really cool
This scene purely defines Vader. He speaks with standard formality and hes polite, which creates a subconscious feeling of superiority and yet you can tell hes pissed. "You seem unsettled" he knows what hes doing and Krennic knows too, but Krennic is also aware of what the man behind the suit is capable of. Hes aware that his life is on the table and that every move he makes has to be calculated or his lungs could be crushed flat. Krennic plays it off with the response that hes pressed for time, which Vader turns the response on him. Despite apologizing, you can tell that he isnt sorry in the slightest and follows up with Krennic having to explain his errors and Vader knows he isnt the only one that Krennic will have to talk to. Simply walking up to Krennic puts him on a state of defense because that's just what Vader is, he doesnt have to physically hurt anyone because his reputation is just that legendary. The actual irl audience has had years to watch the movies, read the books and play the games with Darth Vader in it. We already know the impact that he had on pop culture and media. Think about if he was real and we were in this part of star wars. Vader currently a symbol of power and strength for the empire, a ghost story for the public, and a metaphorical flare gun to tell rebels that death is upon them. Can you say that simply hearing someone breath through a mask is iconic? No. Its who's doing that breathing and when you know the sound that follows them. It creates an atmosphere that just sends chills down your spine...alright I'm done fanboying over this scene
@@bluewolfe6048 If you mean he's not obsequious, than you're right. But for Vader he was pretty polite when compared to how he deals with 95% of every other subordinate he speak with .
I agree except at this point in time Vader isn’t as known and legendary as we may think. Part of it is projecting our memory of him from Empire and Jedi back to this point in time when he’s still the Emperors dark enforcer who the Imperial Military as a whole aren’t completely familiar with. If this was the case Admiral Motti wouldn’t dare mock Lord Vader’s beliefs in front of a board of high ranking imperial officials. At this point he still somewhat answers to Tarkin. He’s mysterious and strange to most of the Imperials, save for Tarkin. However by Empire he’s in charge of the Imperial Fleet and has far greater power and agency. (This Vader has enough power at this point to use significant resources to search for Luke across the galaxy ) clearly during the time in between, The Emperor has had to double down on the night of the Imperial Military because of the failure that was the destruction of the Death Star. (The Emperor dissolved the senate once the Death Star was operational because he was ready to become an all out despotic ruler) and with it The loss of Tarkin who wielded immense power. (Functions pretty much as the main villain of ANH) So by Empire Vader is wielding that might. And by ROTJ Vader is so known and feared that Moff Jerjerrod literally gulps as he arrives. I think the Vader a lot of us think about is that Vader because he’s the most Badass in terms of power but a lot of us forget his side arc during the OT. (This probably chalks down to the creative process and developing a character from space wizard samurai enforcer to twisted tragic mechanical man
Well, Vader had always had a flair of the dramatic and the puns. Hell, in a 'not complete psychopath' Tarkin fanfic, Tarkin showed the Rebels some footage of Vader doing the deadpan humor he is now known for, and the heads of the Alliance were perplexed at Vader with that side shown.
All the time. I just posted a long rant on this. They ruined the whole thing with those dumb ass prequels. Ruined it. You or I could have smoked Lucas on a script/concept/character development for a Vadar transition film/series.
It’s so damn cheesy, the thing that was scary about the dark side of the force was that it was sudden and didn’t rely on any goofy sounds to indicate itself.
So to be fair, in the books they explain it a bit. That just being near Vader and Palpatine is like super unsettling on it's own. Like being near a cold pit essentially.
Vader: Smoke machine? Trooper: its on my lord Vader: Lights? Trooper: 20 lights as you ordered my lord up and running. Vader: ok play my theme and open the door slowly..
Rest In Peace James Earl Jones. This scene was your absolute best as Vader. Your voice never sounded better than it did right here. We’re going to miss you, sir.
Having to be put back into his painfully uncomfortable suit just to talk to Krennic is like being woken up during the best nap of your life. No wonder he's cranky. All things considered, Vader acts remarkably patient for someone so internally plagued with hate.
Vader isn't stupid. He understands why Krennic wanted an audience with him. He also indirectly answers Krennic's question by still calling him "director" at the end(and you can see Krennic smile a bit as he starts to stand). He understands the politics and ultimately seems to sympathize with Krennic a little bit, he just doesn't like the boot-licking attitude of someone disturbing him just to play "mommy said no so let's ask daddy" games(basically Tarkin taking power from him so he goes running to Vader to try and get that power back).
@iamchrispaezjr Pain? Its a *SUIT!* Unless his skin still burns from his last fight with Obi-Wan. Is that why the water in that tube was I'm assuming to be freezing?
1:01--Love how the shadow of Vader completely towers over Krennic. I feel like it represents the dynamic between them: Krennic is little more than an opportunistic bureaucrat, and he is standing in the presence of real power, the Emperor's most dangerous servant and one who is powered by the Force.
I dont care what anyone says. I really think this movie captured the starwars spirit, the feel thats been missing for a long time. Sorry if I'm late to the party, but I loved it.
"you seem...unsettled" "well, you're a 7 foot tall mass murdering cyborg who can choke a man without even raising a hand and have one of the highest kill counts within the galaxy. You don't exactly make me feel safe"
That's because this movie takes place directly before A New Hope, in which Vader's lenses were red. And his sash was over his shoulder pads. They wanted to keep continuity.
@@elijahshells They actually purposely used multiple suits in this film. They wanted to imply that there was the "formal" uniform, like in this scene for when he meets Krennic, then his "front lines" suit which is the more battered rough looking one we see at the end of this one and in Episode IV.
Yes but even after he's gone they can still replicate it. If they can keep Tarkin alive via computer they can keep Vader voice going however long they like.
Me before watching Clone Wars: "Why is he making jokes? Isn't Vader supposed to be the most menacing villain ever?" Me after watching Clone Wars: "Well Anakin was a meme lord after all."
The dialogue in this scene is perfect. At 1:43 Krennic realizes he shouldn't use the word "power" to describe the Death Star in front of the most powerful force user in the Empire, then Vader flips the script on him by describing "its power to create problems"
@@amransom26technically Vader had the potential to be the most powerful due to him being the chosen one and having the most midi chlorians ever recorded, but his potential is really sapped

You can tell Vader is thinking "Never fails. I am going through hydro therapy and bacta and some imbecile who's going to try questioning my authority shows up."
“Its ability to create problems has certainly been confirmed.” Vader just had to throw that jab at the deathstar, which is neat considering he DOES NOT like the concept of it. Its funny the emperor just up and had a second one built.
Darth Vader is very much a "hands-on" kind of guy. A planet-killer is too deeply impersonal a weapon for his liking. He prefers a face-to-face approach to destroying the enemy.
I remember watching this In theaters, and everyone went crazy when vader appeared... then the final hallways scene, the whole audience erupted in applause
I think the actor who played Krennic did very well in this scene. Used to power and no fear of Tarkin, he looks like he's got ants crawling under his skin the whole time he's in Vader's presence and is desperately wishing to be anywhere else. Obviously terrified, but too narcissistic to show it, he can't resist the "So I'm still in command" question.
James Earl Jones has the voice of a wise, powerful leader or a god. Either way, he has the gift of making Darth Vader's voice as spine-chilling as possible.
The voice he did of Darth Vader was better in the original movies... Rogue One, Darth Vaders voice is terrible and you can tell it is James Earl Jones in the original movies you can't. Jordan Zohr, you do realize that James Earl Jones is 40 years older than when he originally did this voice. Of course he’s going to sound different. He still sounds good at 86 years old.
I love what happens when Krennic says: "So I'm still in command?" Vader stops and there's a split second of silence. Just long enough for the audience to think: "Oh Krennic you idiot!"
Let us all have a Ben Mendhelson appreciation moment pls. He kills EVERYTHING. Easily one of the best Star Wars villains. And also the sound design for the audible sound distortion when he uses the force choke. It’s the little things!
That's what makes it excellent and a bit saddening to see Vader.. because sometimes with the things he does you remember that Young Anakin is still in there somewhere..
@@reset4460 It's what makes his character powerful. After all, we were all innocent infants before we became adults. Our morality becomes compromised. In this case for Anakin, what happened to him was way worse.
Also, never underestimate your freelancer just because you paid him alot. Especially when he's both smart AF and can physically overpower your and probably your whole security team. (Referencing the part that the same actor who played Director Krenic also played the guy who hired Bane).
Yeah. Whoever is inside the suit has David Prowse' body language down to a T. And that must be by design. Maybe he had some kind of body-acting coach. Or maybe they ust strapped him in a chair and made him watch the first few minutes of Episode IV over and over and over and over and --
Rivenshield Spencer Wilding was in the suit, the finger pointing is a homage to David Prowse's original Vader, he respected him and kept that element of Vader alive in Rogue One. Notice how Wilding walks exactly like Prowse because Vader needed to walk in a certain way. It's a nice touch.
Vader uses a Bacta tank to try to heal his wounds. According to other Star Wars media, Bacta has miraculous healing properties even healing Mando's head injuries with just a spray. But here, the Bacta hardly helps Vader with his injuries. My theory is that the corrupting nature of the dark side towards his body negates any form healing that Vader gains from his Bacta immersion.
I take a more personal view-I suspect Vader only uses bacta to heal life threatening injuries or treat deadly infections. He doesn't 'enjoy' himself, or use it for relaxation, not even to ease his pain much. That would make him a relatively poor Sith, as his crippled state relies entirely upon the dark side of the force to keep him going. If he spent too much time in Bacta he'd likely never leave. And let's be honest-he probably doesn't like the time in his head spent meditating. He's always preferred action. I wouldn't be surprised if he knows there is some guy in his fortress who calculates exactly how much bacta he uses and how long he spends in the tank and reports it to Palpatine if he seems to becoming too lax...just another set of eyes on him from his 'old friend'.
I feel like it was only used to help further heal his burn wounds. Wounds that we saw did eventually heal a decent amount evidenced in RoTj when Luke takes his mask off. They likely healed long before then realistically, but we have little evidence to really prove it. I also feel like darkside corruption has a part to play in why it took so long for his skin to finally heal from the bacta baths but also those burns were pretty severe.
@@dustinjones7458 Canon to the Vader comics that recently came out. Anytime Vader isn't actively doing anything he suits in the tank or his meditation pod. It's his happy place
Ben Mendleson sold the fear of Vader so well. When Vader gets close, that slowing of speech because he literally can’t think past his terror is perfection.
Bacta tank, actually. Still the idea of Vader relaxing in hot bath after a long day of rebel hunting, only for Krennic to come in and bitch about Death Star is hilarious.
The way he says 'lord vader' sounds so good; it has the tone of a guy who wants to say something but is afraid to do so. No one gives Ben Mendelsohn enough credit. Anytime you need a shrewd power hungry corporate guy then he's your guy and he played the role perfectly well.
We all love Vader, how powerful this scene plays out, Jones' amazing & legendary voice, but let's also be honest, this scene belongs to Ben Mendelsohn. I understand the stressful situation he is in, the fear he is feeling knowing Vader can destroy his neck from across the room, then finally the relief he feels knowing he is still in command, struggling to breath for air. Krennic thought he could level up to Vader, forcing Vader to admit he is still in charge & then he realizes, "Oh crap, I can't breath, what's happening?! Vader has my throat!" I would have just said, "Yes, my lord." And ran out of the room to the nearest bathroom to change my shorts. Notice how Vader is holding his fingers, he HAS Krennic's larynx in his fingers. (Powerful scene)
You are so right to credit Ben like that. While I feel James as Vader is the greatest feature of this franchise, Ben is such a phenomenal actor and presence himself, even in the company of the Dark Lord himself. He makes sure, at least with what minimal benefit of the doubt he is allowed by Vader, to contend against his treatment and argue his proficiency and it made Krennick so much more enjoyable and substantial than just being random cog in the machine #22 who gets force choked like all the others. At least he's Director Krennick who gets force choked like all the others. And it's Ben who brings that home.

Governor Tarkin, the Grand Moff, has a much higher rank. Krennic is technically not part of the military, but he is the project director for the construction of the Death Star Project. Krennic simply wanted to maintain control over the weapon after it was built, and have credit for the project.

@@claudius3359 Tarkin was the big pusher for it. That's why Palpy liked him so much.
@@TheUndyingCrystal And the whole Lothal fuel supply blowing up thanks to Pryce, there was really little time for delays.
It’s like the giant battleships and superweapons built by the Axis in WWII, they look cool and all but they eat resources and are largely ineffective
I remember having shivers watching the hallway scene for the first time in the cinema
Everyone went crazy also when they heard James earl Jones ahhh we love Vader
In the last hallway scene my all theater simultaneously came .
Did they all wave their glowing lightsaber toys around as they made the sound effects with their mouths too?
For a badass dude Vader is really very popular.
I think the actor who played Krennic did very well in this scene. Used to power and no fear of Tarkin, he looks like he's got ants crawling under his skin the whole time he's in Vader's presence and is desperately wishing to be anywhere else. Obviously terrified, but too narcissistic to show it, he can't resist the "So I'm still in command" question.
sonofcy people forget he had the balls to yell off tarkin but he can't say shit to vader
Talking still owned him
Gilmartin Pares. No one can say shit to Vader. Vader has a pretty good reputation of fucking people up for mouthing off, so no one dares bother him.
+Alucard Of Romania Which is what we've seen since that film.
Ben Mendelsohn. He's definitely a great actor!
James Earl Jones has the voice of a wise, powerful leader or a god. Either way, he has the gift of making Darth Vader's voice as spine-chilling as possible.
And Thulsa Doom in Conan.
The voice he did of Darth Vader was better in the original movies... Rogue One, Darth Vaders voice is terrible and you can tell it is James Earl Jones in the original movies you can't.
Take note the sound of James Earl Jones in this scene at the end of the video 1:28 th-cam.com/video/KQFho0_G1VI/w-d-xo.html
Now listen to this video above at 2:19
Big difference in tone...
It's to be expected. It also sounded great
Jordan Zohr, you do realize that James Earl Jones is 40 years older than when he originally did this voice. Of course he’s going to sound different. He still sounds good at 86 years old.
Jordan Zohr Dude he’s old. If they got someone else to do the voice then everyone would be up in arms about it. I’m sure you would be.
R.I.P. Mr. James Earl Jones. You will forever be missed.
You are one with the force now.
I love what happens when Krennic says: "So I'm still in command?" Vader stops and there's a split second of silence. Just long enough for the audience to think: "Oh Krennic you idiot!"
It's like just barely escaping being fired by the boss, and then having the balls to ask for a possible raise in the future.
The moment you hear that heavy wind sound you know what that means for krenic
"Do you feel in charge?"
1987MartinT "bitch, you are _dismissed_."
Darth Vader was simply giving Krennic a reminder of who REALLY is in command.
At the beginning when it shows Vader without his suit, it’s so surreal to think that it is Anakin we are looking at.
Sorry I am 11 months late to respond but that is the same exact thought that passed through my mind when I saw this movie. like "wow that's Anakin."
Y’all are both wrong, anakin is dead. That is Vader
Definitely looks age appropriate, unlike Sebastian Shaw, or Alec Guinness for that matter
Of course you are right. But you know what we mean.
He's more machine now than man. Twisted and evil.
Those white clothes turned brown quick after seeing Vader.
And yellow, too.
Director Crappic
Krenic should have worn the brown pants.
Vader: *Director Krennic. You seem unsettled*
Krennic: *No, just unpresent. There are a great many things to attend to*
Vader: *My apologies. You do have a great many things to explain*
Let us all have a Ben Mendhelson appreciation moment pls. He kills EVERYTHING. Easily one of the best Star Wars villains. And also the sound design for the audible sound distortion when he uses the force choke. It’s the little things!
I actually hear anakin's voice saying everything Darth vader says.
@@LeftytheGansterGremlin if you haven't, watch the scene where he reunites with Ashoka in Rebels. You really feel sorry for him then

Never annoy your boss. Especially if your boss has the power to choke you to death.

the fangirl obeys her boss, otherwise he will choke her
which he sorta does anyway from time to time
Yandere Fangirl Choking fetish
Also, never underestimate your freelancer just because you paid him alot. Especially when he's both smart AF and can physically overpower your and probably your whole security team. (Referencing the part that the same actor who played Director Krenic also played the guy who hired Bane).
Especially when they’re in the bath
2:25 He did the stupid little pointing thing. I love it.
Yeah. Whoever is inside the suit has David Prowse' body language down to a T. And that must be by design. Maybe he had some kind of body-acting coach. Or maybe they ust strapped him in a chair and made him watch the first few minutes of Episode IV over and over and over and over and --
..........In ANY way
So much attention to detail in this film, I love it. I hope the same director does Kenobi.
Blood Ink Seras?
Rivenshield
Spencer Wilding was in the suit, the finger pointing is a homage to David Prowse's original Vader, he respected him and kept that element of Vader alive in Rogue One.
His suit actively harms him day to day. It was made by Palpatine to be that way since he was so disappointed in him for losing to Obi Wan.
@@dustinjones7458 Vader is literally too angry to die. He has to keep that anger going.
Moral of the story: Do not bring your HR complaints to Darth Vader, Especially while he's in the middle of his bath.m
Bacta tank, actually. Still the idea of Vader relaxing in hot bath after a long day of rebel hunting, only for Krennic to come in and bitch about Death Star is hilarious.
Bacta Tank relieved the constant itching and pain from his injuries. Some needed freedom of his suit...
Which can only mean that he was that much more pissed when Krennic came to cry
It's the only time he can be without his suit. He's always in constant pain which also helps his use with the dark side of the force.
I do enjoy my bathm's
The way he says 'lord vader' sounds so good; it has the tone of a guy who wants to say something but is afraid to do so.
No one gives Ben Mendelsohn enough credit. Anytime you need a shrewd power hungry corporate guy then he's your guy and he played the role perfectly well.
I totally agree. The delivery of that line was perfect.
He's a world class actor for a reason
Abso-fucking-lutly , he acts a perfect power hungry character
RIP James Earl. You were more than a legend, we'll miss ya, buddy.
They made Vader look more of a BADASS in this film, gotta love it
Derrace Simmons vader should've had more scenes
Krennic: You're pure evil.
Vader: I'm necessary evil.
I want a movie about Vader. Not Anakin but all Vader baby.
Eazy E unfortunately they’ll never do it. It would ruin the effect his presence would have.
We had those... They are called the PREQUELS
2 hours of non stop action
Check out Vader shards of the past
He does have comic book spinoffs.
Basically, the same scene he had with Bane in Dark Knight Rises.
