With things like single episode helmets and keys to plot coupons, "accessory" feels more like "context kibble", and in a way kinda shady. Like adding more frosting to a cake that doesn't contribute to the flavor experience in any other way than charging more for the extra icing.
The more and more I've gotten legends figures, the more I think to myself that it is extremely limiting to just see them as simple desk toys, having the toy versions of both Newage and Magic Square's Megatron are what really opened my eyes to that. I enjoy the Newage version for many of the same reasons you do, it's simple, fun, and what's expected of a traditional legends figure, but I also seem to enjoy the Magic Square version for a lot of the reasons you don't. I really, really enjoy the complexity of the Magic Square one, I've done it so many times now that it even comes easier to me than the Newage one. Just the fact that they were able to design that complex of a figure at that size, and the fact that it also just works is amazing to me. I know that this probably isn't the case for most people, but I really enjoy a small figure that can pack in an absolute ton of engineering.
I agree with this to some extent, but they definitely need to draw a line somewhere. I recently got their mix master and transforming the legs is a nightmare. But by that same merit - their menasor is amazing and the fact they were abele to basically have most of a combiner that turns into a convincing trailer is damn impressive
I love that Megatron comes with obscure accessories. The Buzzsaw blade is sweet from where he tried to cut up Optimus. For me as a cartoon nerd who watches G1 episodes every day, it's awesome to get that stuff.
Owning both (having bought the MS after being disappointed with the Newage), I think my general impression is that the Newage makes some big compromises in each mode to create a fun transformation, while the MS sacrificed the transformation to make each mode look more finished. The Magic Square also just FEELS so much better in robot mode, the Newage one is just weirdly loose and finicky. The Newage feels like it was engineered for this scale (making some unfortunate but necessary compromises) whereas the Magic Square feels like a figure that was engineered to be Voyager or MP sized that was scaled down afterwards. Somewhere between them, there lies the Platonic ideal of a perfect Legends-scale Megatron, but neither really hits the mark for me.
I personally prefer the Newage mold, it's more cartoon accurate in terms of shape and imo I prefer more panel lines because it looks more robotic. Plus Magic Square plastic is awful
This is the first figure that I purchased both NewAge and MS versions. Even as a NewAge fanboy I regret the NewAge one because the bot mode is floppy and the back is ugly and unstable. Also the overall proportions are too skimpy. The MS bot mode feels so much better in hand and it looks better next to the NewAge seekers and Soundwave. The MS gun mode is not pretty enough to display but I feel the NewAge one looks ugly, too, despite it's more realistic gun proportions. Buying both means I spent $200 for one bot mode and many useless accessories. Still, every time I look at MS Megs and his minions on the shelf, I REALLY like it. I find myself picking him up posing him more than all others.
Now that I’m officially a Third Party Legends Scale Collector/Enthusiast, I have a NA & MS Megatron. Before I unbox, figured I’d revisit this VS to get some pro tips for transformations. Keeping open mind regarding winner since I’m currently fan of MS, NA, and IF, and the things each company particularly well.
I will give Newage this over their entire lineup of figures They're one of the few that embrace the Microchange and Diaclone toy designed Transformers Like goddamn - the Optimus Battle Convoy look of their 27EX Commander David sold me on the entire figure Those new decals and toy inspired head make me feel something more than the box standard CHUG figure or Masterpiece
Honestly I like the magic square plastic look. I don’t know about it’s feel but the look of the megatron and especially the magic square dead end look lovely to me but like, I have no clue why
While I can understand the desktoy angle, my main reason for loving Legends is having mini, affordable masterpieces. Magic Square in particular make figures that could and have (MP to Legends, but the point stands) made for a great MP. Granted, though their materials allow for such small parts, and the their finishes more or less pull off a cartoon finish, Newage does benefit from better coloring and finishes. Their Optimus is a thing of beauty when concerning colors. Their Optimus is also a version why I prefer Magic Square. It has less cohesive shaping, appearing more so as a bunch of shapes pressed together to achieve a silhouette. Magic Square on the other hand, with their OP 2.0 as an example, are more cohesive in appearance, having better defined limbs. Newage also does a chibi affect on their smaller figures with is less appealing to me, due to that wanting for mini masterpieces. That said, that chibi aesthetic is probably due to their achieving better scale. I prefer the body (horrible head) on MS Bee, but NA Bee is simply microscopic. So it's definitely give and take, but I don't believe their lack of adherence to the desktoy idea makes them bad figures (being complex for the sake of complexity isn't a plus though).
I can perfectly understand lockdowns POV of legends. But I feel completely dropping everything that doesn't have a overly simple transformation for the sake of being a desk toy is such a limiting view on these figures. Who's to say people don't want an amazing small scale Megatron to display next to their titan class figures? Or who's to say others don't find more fidgety/complicated transformations more interesting as a desk toy thanks to them requiring you to actually give them some thought on how to transform them. At the end of the day though, we all have out own thoughts and opinions, and I can respect how honest and passionate lockdown is about how legends scale figures should be handled Hoping to see his reviews on both magic square 1.0 and 2.0 primes though
One thing to note is that there's a difference between complexity and overcomplexity. Figures like magic square menasor and new age prime still remain fun. Figures like magic square Megatron and new age Straxus/Galvatron do not.
I recently got newage megatron and i absolutely love him. His robot mode is great, his transformation is beautifully ingeneered. I absolutely adore the way his legs flip around and compress. The only complaint i really have is that his poseability is a little limited compared to their prime. But he gets a pass for being a legends figure

Hey Doc. Since SS86 Megatron has had a leaked listing as a Leader Class, IF the figure does the gun mode instead of a tank, would basing the transformation on Agamemnon?
It won't be. He'll be a tank. Much as I'd love a Walther alt mode, it would be illegal everywhere outside of America and Japan. You need an actual gun cabinet, a replica firearm license, bars on all the windows and a registry just to own MP36 in Australia.
@@DrLockdown I know the likelihood of 86 Gun Megatron would never happen, but HYPOTHETICALLY, if these laws didn't get in the way, would Agamemnon's transformation work?
Ah two of my favorite things in one. Interesting toy Diagnosis and Mario music. Don't get me wrong, Pokemon music is God tier too, but Mario hits different.
See people? toying can look good, just need the right company, and right designers (Edit: the G1 toy also featured some other combinations, like a bigger fusion cannon, and the hand swapping might not be for everyone, I mean PerspectiveEnd hates the RID 2001 optimus because he's a partsformer, and that guy was a good optimus for his time, that actually makes partsforming pretty fun and something to do with the other parts)
Would you recommend doomsday if you just wanted him for robot mode? Been collecting magic square combiners recently and I really like the chunkier designs.
I think that if magic Square just resize them to be Mp sized and updated a few things I think they would actually be a bit better I mean, I have the Optimus prime and it is one of the best figures I have

I take issue with the idea of a "legends collector" in this video. Because I feel like when you say "legends collectors want it like this" you mean you want it like this. Personally, I think a masterpiece should blend real-world vehicles, toys, and cartoon models. But the thing about that is I prefer it that way. If I were to sit here and say "masterpiece collectors prefer it like this" now I am not wrong in the idea that some people are with me on this opinion but now I am alienating people who have different wants. If I were to do that I am sort of making a divide between what a true and untrue collector is. I can tell in the context of this video you probably didn't have intentions on a "true collector" and it was probably just taken the wrong way but this isn't me butchering you hate waffles because you said you like pancakes it was just my initial reaction when you said "true pancake enjoyers eat it them with chocolate chips" Note: This isn't me saying you're wrong for having an opinion or no one is sharing the same opinion as you it's me saying that you can alienate people with a different opinion by throwing the idea of a "legends collector"
To each their own With interpretations of the Decepticons but I gotta admit the combination of blue collar workers and xenophobic genocidal fascism has become increasingly concerning to me over recent years
1. The new age gun looks HORRIBLE. It's disgusting and insulting to my eyes, so many hinges and robot shit showing. 2. The MS Gun mode can fold the feet in so it looks cleaner. 3. the little tabs in the MS Handle arent that bad? Tf you on about. If you are counting tabs as a negative, then new age would have minus points.

@mecha53107 probably.
I love legends figures and I wan them to have enjoyable Transformations, I don't display them they are fore playing with
Ah two of my favorite things in one.
Interesting toy Diagnosis and Mario music.
Don't get me wrong, Pokemon music is God tier too, but Mario hits different.
25:14 Why is this so funny 😂
Following up on this, are you excited for NewAge's new Romulus take on Megatron?
I'm excited that people have an option.
Not something I'm really fussed about tho.
See people? toying can look good, just need the right company, and right designers
(Edit: the G1 toy also featured some other combinations, like a bigger fusion cannon, and the hand swapping might not be for everyone, I mean PerspectiveEnd hates the RID 2001 optimus because he's a partsformer, and that guy was a good optimus for his time, that actually makes partsforming pretty fun and something to do with the other parts)
I think the gun is red alerts because if you look at the things cut from the script
Would you recommend doomsday if you just wanted him for robot mode? Been collecting magic square combiners recently and I really like the chunkier designs.
Not really. If you EVER have the inclination to transform him, new age is the way to go
As a skywarp lover I feel attacked
Love the pun.
I can't wait for you to review MS-B46 light of victory, optimus prime 2.0 by magic square.
Your laptop seems pretty justified for crashing. That transformation looks like it’s a mess at that scale.
I think that if magic Square just resize them to be Mp sized and updated a few things I think they would actually be a bit better I mean, I have the Optimus prime and it is one of the best figures I have
i see your point about the legs but i think the original looks worse
That it does, but it converts way better
I think the Ligma key came with Newage and not Magic Square
2:22 DID THEY ACTUALLY CALL IT THAT.
As a german this makes me a TAD worried….
I do feel the newage seekers are similar to the magic square tron.
Too many accessories, and a transformation that doesn't need to be as it is
I absolutely adore the new age seekers, aside from the legs
@@DrLockdown dunno if it's just my copy, but the purple one's legs are floppy
Ah damn. That's unfortunate. I've got five seekers total (acid storm, sunstorm, cocoa cola Starscream, action master thundercracker and G2 ramjet) and all of them have great QC
But my Agamemnon has a bunch of accessories that you don’t mention…
Mine didn't come with those. Was yours the toon version?
@@DrLockdown yeah. Toon version. Might not have had the Krimzeek.
Yeah that's probably it. They likely spent that money in the paint
@@DrLockdown lucky you. I paid like… $30 shipped. Mind telling me what you paid?
@@tawdryhepburn4686 OUCH. RRP in Australia is $100.
The accessories are four stop motion animations
1:08 I remember that mini Optimus prime on the right I used to get him alot and I kept losing it so I kept going back to dollar general to get it I remember the days when I was 6-8 yo now I'm 13 and now the toys are cheap
Please review Newage Galvatron/Straxus!
Straxus is in the pipeline, but not for ages
dont worry about being flagged for firearm content because there are entire channels dedicated to firearms on youtube
As magic square doomsday worse than Thunder later
No
Lets eat KarachiBiryani and be Happy. KarachiBiryani is the Proof that God love us all.
That joke about not knowing guns cuz you’re not American just ages better and better with every passing day…
4:26 i am american and i can confirm that describes us to a tee
Key to Vector Ligma.
Don't say it.
2:26 god fucking damnit. That joke got me. I hate how clever but how bad it was.
Not mine actually. A mate came up with it
A very old joke, actually.
So MP 44 as a Legends/Core figure… ew. Armada Starscream worship when? (And Hot Shot, those legs feel like it needs a digaoscis)
You mean the new legacy one?
He's fine. A slight step up from the T30 one. Inferno from the same wave is more interesting, but honestly I don't have enough to say about either to make a full review
@@DrLockdown ok. Hot Shot does look to have weird legs but perfect outside of that… besides the Mcdonalds yellow. If someone is crazy enough to do a full paint job for it, a Gundam orange yellow would be better.
I think he's fine. Flawed, but I'm excited to get him...in April 2023 when he drops in Australia :(
I take issue with the idea of a "legends collector" in this video.
I can tell in the context of this video you probably didn't have intentions on a "true collector" and it was probably just taken the wrong way but this isn't me butchering you hate waffles because you said you like pancakes it was just my initial reaction when you said "true pancake enjoyers eat it them with chocolate chips"
Note: This isn't me saying you're wrong for having an opinion or no one is sharing the same opinion as you it's me saying that you can alienate people with a different opinion by throwing the idea of a "legends collector"
The video be like: *plot twist*
To each their own With interpretations of the Decepticons but I gotta admit the combination of blue collar workers and xenophobic genocidal fascism has become increasingly concerning to me over recent years
I actually prefer the magic square one. That new age one looks like crap
At that size it really doesn't
So you'd rather pop an artery when transforming something than not?
Vector Ligma
Imagine being mad at 3rd party names
That’s a lot of f##k’s
😂
I think Michael Bay Design This transformation
Megatron was right.
Shut the hell up
This has to be one of the most annoying reviews I have ever watched. Lots of incoherent information in quickfire clips mashed in between alot of childish complaining. TH-cam algorithm fail.
