I think people have such strong opinions on oil (and filters) because they don't know any better. Paying the most for the 'best' whatever helps people feel better, which is what one needs if they don't know any better. I've been using Shell Rotella T6 in my Caravan for years.
Same with my 2016 Chev Silverado.
    And in my BMW 318i.
It's not a bad idea actually. Some of the oil passages in some engines (ie Chrysler/Yamaha V6's) have pretty small oil passages and are prone to sludging up, so any oil that has extra detergents to keep particulates down is a good idea.

The “SN” ratings on diesel oils such as Delo, means that it has additives to handle gasoline contaminates, but it also means that the oil needs to reduce the amount on anti-wear additives (such as “Zinc”) in order to maintain the “SN” rating. So any “SN” rated diesel oil only has as much anti wear additives as gasoline oil. That is why Rottela dropped the “SN” rating on all their diesel oil and created the “Gas truck oil” separately for gasoline powered engines. In doing so, Rottela diesel oil also dropped the additives that handle gas contaminates. So a Delo with an “SN” rating is a multi engine type oil with additives to handle both diesel & gas contaminates. So when using diesel oil in a gasoline engine these days you have a choice, do I use a “SN” rated diesel oil with reduced anti wear additives/Zinc, or do I use “C” rated Rottela that only handles diesel contaminates and needs to be changed out more frequently before the gas contaminates start breaking down the oil. The link below will show you an oil analysis explaining the differences in anti wear additives between “SN” rated Delo & “C” rated Rottela. th-cam.com/video/T-yt5a1cWd4/w-d-xo.html

The diesel lube can't deal with varnish? I think The only contaminate that diesel doesn't make as gas is varnish, since diesel makes soot and lacker, but don't make varnish. Varnish are partially burnt gasoline, that collects in form of a polymer of High molecule Weight and are polar with negative charge wich makes It adhere to metal surfaces.

I suggested him to switch to Shell Rotella T6 10w-30 and it greatly suppressed the lifter tap. I can understand that it may work better for people and reduces lifter tick and stuff, but I would still alternate between this and a regular gasoline motor oil. Diesel motor oil isn't held to the same cleanliness standard as gasoline engine oil so it can often cause gunk build up in the engine--esp over a long period of time. So use a regular oil to clean it out if you are really intent on using the diesel oil. Or maybe switch to a heavier weight or a higher additive package oil like using Pennzoil Ultra plat synth instead of just plat synth.

You should see the hot debates on the air cooled Porsche forums and other vintage car sites requiring higher zinc and phosphorus levels to protect flat tapet cams on older cars. All gasoline oils have been on a diet of reduced zddp since the 90's and the current is SN and newest SP. Since the 70's, 15W40 was the go to for older air cooled Porsche 911's and other vintage cars. Back then, 15W40 has both diesel and gas rated. Fast foward to today and all 15W40's dropped the gasoline rating and only rate for diesel CJ-4, CK-4 since gasoline SN, SP only allowed to have up to 800 ppm in zinc in lower viscosity ratings. Lower zinc oil of 700-800 was due to the required mandate to protect catalytic converters however it's been proven that having 1200 or less ppm in zinc oil does not harm the catalytic converter and 1100-1200 ppm in zinc is the perfect amount to protect flat tapet cams. I've looked at all the entire Shell Rotella line and ironically only T5 blend 15W40 is the only one with molybdenum where as T4 and Synthetic T6 doesn't have it.

How have you found the oil since you changed it? Does the engine seem to run quieter? Have you done any oil analysis done by any chance? Keen to know. Thanks man. btw, love the video!

Hot oil is thin. Lol green mandates are killing engines.0w20,0w16 sucks in hot weather. I used thicker oil and it wore out the running geer at over 350000 on my off road farmy rigs! Lol my 2018 just got its first 5w30 syn with soot in muffler! Lucas in gas will cure it soon! in gas

My brother in law used 15/40 rotela in his 350 gas chev truck 98 model he had a head gasket fail-or. he asked me to rebuild it I found all the cam and main bearing all heat scored and the film had come off them and he is not hard on vehicles. So there is some thing to consider, to heavy of weight ? no sling rate ?

Honda motors are 5W20. At 200K due to the daughter running all the oil out on a 400 mile trip I now mix 5W20 and 5W30 (50/50) and with new coils oil consumption is way down and the VTec values like it OK. Heavy oils are not friendly to the Honda VTec motors.

I've been running Rotella t6 in my 2004 5.4L Triton with almost 500,000kms on its clock (i locked out my cam phasers eons ago and upgraded the timing guides and tensioners too boot many years ago), ecoboosts, my vw's both gas and diesel, my tractor, my motorcycle, my side by side, my lawn mowers... etc etc I've done a PLETHORA of laboratory tested oil samples and everything has been coming up roses for years and years.... My 2.0T VW's have even stopped scoring my fuel pump cam follower and theyve stopped burning a half litre of oil every 3500kms This stuff is literally the end all be all oil IMHO.... I literally won't change your oil for you in my home shop unless you use T6.....

Theres nothing wrong.. instead its even better to use hdeo in gasoline cars. Ive been using it for years, engine internal is clean, the performance is smooth. If you're using it for the 1st time.. let it run for first 1k km.. after that u should see the difference, in term of performance and how light your engine feels. Been using shell rimula R6 for years, now changed to Duron fully synthetic.
