What about Rotella T6 5w40 vs Mobil TDT 5w40? Also can you do a 0w-40 oil comparison, or even 0w-40 vs 0w30? I know 5w-30 is usually a recommended oil, but living in Northern Illinois I like to use 0w in the winter (or even all around better cold starts in which engine wear is supposed to be most prevalent). I've also heard that Xw-40 has better Oil Film Thickness for better protection than Xw-30 during operating temps, can you confirm? Thanks!
@ Project Farm, Could you advise whether if I should use the T6 5w30 or 5w40 for my 2015 Q50 Infiniti 4dr Sedan Premium AWD 3.7L V6 with 20k miles? 5w30 full synthetic motor oil is what's recommended in the vehicle and it does have a catalytic converter but from what I continue to read is that the T6 5w40 still has the more beneficial formulation vs the T6 5w30. I mean should I try the T6 5w40 or just do the multi vehicle T6 5w30? Maybe I can even mix in just a quart of the T6 5w40 with the rest being T6 5w30? I really don't know. I live in Ohio. I currently use mobil1 5w30 full synthetic.

How about testing Shell Rotella Gas Synthetic vs high end racing oils, like Royal Purple, Redline or AMSoil. Also, another interesting test would be to try the different formulations of Mobil One. I was at the local Walmart and there are so many different versions of Mobil One. Which one is better?
@@gregkimura5906 check out bobistheoilguy, there are many different lab analysis of many different oils (including mobil variations). As for Shell Rotella Gas Synthetic vs "racing oils", if you are asking for personal advice my (and many) recommendations are all of them are fine so long as changed in 5k mile intervals and full synthetic. Also refer to the owners manual for rating (API SN Plus, ILSAC GF-6A, etc). You can usually find the rating on the oil bottle itself or look it up on the website for the most up to date information.

And formal results, like Blackstone Labs, for the oils as well--after time versus new.
There are many other parameters (like thin film adhesion and lubrication) to look at. And to see if those values, including viscosity, hold up over 5000 miles.

@@ProjectFarm I have a video idea. You can test modern off the shelf conventional motor oils against synthetics. Like Quaker State Advanced Durability 5W30 vs Mobil1 Advanced synthetic 5W30. New conventional oils meet the same specs and industry classifications as synthetics as you can see on the back of their bottles (ilsac gf5, sn plus) so I'm wondering if they perform the same? Blackstone Labs which has analyzed thousands of oil samples over the last decade said in one of their newsletters they do not see any difference in wear metals between conventional and synthetic motor oils.
i use the 5w30 version of the shell rotella gas truck oil in my 2019 mazda cx-5 gt turbo, and i am extremely satisfied. i drive my mazda fairly hard and i wanted a robust oil. your video greatly helped me with my choice.

I have been using this in my 19 f150 since new, but I cannot find it locally anymore. It's become very expensive where still available online. I bought 6 gallons while on clearance at a local parts store several months ago, haven't seen any locally since.

Pennzoil is a brand of Shell, you might find the same oil there under a different name.

@@ProjectFarm one thing that could of made it better is weighing and using caliper on bearing so we know for sure which bearing had more wear, also I believe Pre ignition comment doesnt have to do with SN but rather DEXOS Gen 2.
Also dont work so hard rotating oil containers on the burner , just rotate on the hour and should come out to the same deal as long as on each side equal time ?????

What about their gasoline? Is it pretty good too? I'd think they're pretty much close to the same in brand name fuels, just curious. I've used Chevron & Shell, and a couple of small locally owned stations fuels over the years and never noticed any trouble from any of them, but the locally owned station offers non-ethanol fuel, or rather was the only one at the time offering non-ethanol, but only in premium fuel but better than running the ethanol fuels through my small engine equipment so I always bought the non-ethanol fuel from that station for my lawn/garden equipment, ran the Shell or Chevron in my vehicles. Lately I've only been running Shell because I get a few cents off per gallon over the other stations.
Whenever i start a project i use this channel to search products I'll be using glad I've always ran rotella oil in all my trucks I've owned

Purple power is the best plus it removes break dust from wheels. It will oxidize bare aluminum so be careful also hard on skin so wear rubber gloves if your going to scrub something.
@@paulreid7370 yeah there is this red stuff you can get at cash and carry and i forget its name its like that, not supposed to put it in a spray bottle, well at least not a mister type, if you breathe that stuff, forget about getting air for a minute....

Where did you find it a lot cheaper than Mobil 1? 5 quarts of Mobil 1 5w30 is $22.37 at Walmart. Same size of the Shell Gas Truck is $31.52 A lot of places have actually discontinued the Shell Gas Truck. Maybe bad timing.
@@JA-rn5qv at the time it was like 15$ at advance auto parts then they stopped carrying it. I have since seen the price of it climb. Still good oil though.
@@timschultes6467 Yeah it's a great oil formulation, especially for heavy duty applications such as towing. It might still make sense for truck drivers that are operating in extreme conditions but at $32+ for the 5-qrt jug I'm not sure it makes financial sense for the everyday car driver that changes their oil frequently as compared to for example SuperTech Full Synthetic which is $15 dollars for the same size. If I had a truck/suv that I was going to put through some extreme use I would definitely choose the Shell Gas Truck oil since that's what it's formulated for. For my daily driver though, just doesn't make sense at this point at twice the price to use it versus SuperTech Full Synthetic which costs half as much and will do just as well under normal, day to day conditions. At $14 bucks you couldn't go wrong. At $32+ only makes sense for extreme conditions that warrant it.

I've seen most all of your oil competition videos and love them. I would really like to see a comparison of each Mobil1 version (particularly the high mileage + extended performance) as well as how different oils specifically marketed as high mileage compare to each other.

You are getting what you pay for then.
As long as you change oil regularly most any synthetic oil will provide more then enough protection to your engine.
I'm sold on the shell, I've been eyeballing it every day at Walmart and I've always used Mobil 1 in my 04 Silverado 2500hd 6.0 but seeing how shell surpassed Mobil in all fields I'm not looking back! Thank you as always for your excellent priceless videos!

Steve DeLeo you honestly can’t go wrong with it or Pennzoil Ultra Platinum (it’s like $23 on Amazon now.) Amsoil is just too overpriced and too hard to get your hands on.
John Moore I’ll agree with overpriced, but I can walk into the quicklube place a mile from my home and buy it, and there’s a convenience store a mile past that that sells it too.
John Moore that penzoil ultra has thinner viscosity than that shell.

That would be a great comparison. Rotella Gas Truck 5W 30 vs Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. Both have the same parent company but two different brands names. I would be curious to see how they compare we may be surprised and they come out relatively close.
My 1st thought exactly Pennzoil platinum seems to be the leader of the pack as far as performance but have not seen it against shell rotella this would be a very interesting test

I've just watched this for the second time. After the first time I watch this I did my first oil change in my new truck with the Rotella gas truck oil! Could you do a test on which is the best Motorcycle oil?
If you do this test you should compare Rotella T4 to motorcycle specific oils. A lot of people in the motorcycle community swear by T4.

@@bobkinney2430 Both T4 and T6 are JASO MA/MA 2 rated. Rotella T4 is a synthetic blend and Rotella T6 is a full synthetic. But T4 is 2/3rds the price of T6.
T5 for some of us.
@@SateenDuraLuxe T6 is Synthetic....it is the most popular for bikers to save money....it worked ok....but shying issues started and switched back to mobil1. Moot point as gear box is shot.

LemmingRush, Idk where Chris J is at, but we had a ten day stretch in January in Alberta Canada that it was -40°F/-40°C each night.
The daytime high temperature for that particular week and a half got no warmer than -13°F/-25°C
Last winter, that stretch went on for FORTY days.

Feedback: I was debating between exactly these two products (5w30), this video is directly influencing my choice of product! I went with the Rotella GT in my truck, and will now be going with it in my dads as well. He is a believer of Mobil 1, but Rotella is a few dollars cheaper and more avalible right now. Since shell came out with this gasoline oil I switched to shell. I have 3 vehicles and this oil is on the pricy side but I find the budget for it. I feel its an investment for preventive break down for the vehicles. Thank you for your chanel. It's very helpful to me and other TH-cam viewers.

Here in Canada we have a Canadian tire branded oil (motomaster) and it is developed with shell, I would be curious to see how it would compare to the competition, or the shell oil. Motomaster oil runs $59cad/5L on regular price but goes on sale for $26cad/5L. I'd be happy to send a jug to you if you make a video. I'm sure the Canadian viewers would love to know if it's actually decent oil.

But in my dad's diesel we do. he swares by the rottella for diesels, so I'm really curious to see how similar the CT branded one is compared to the actual rottella branded oil. Only a couple places have it now around my area and the oil is 2 yrs old looking at production date on the bottle.

You should compare Euro blend oils vs normal blends.
There is a deep rabbit hole on LS performance engines that Euro blend Castrol 0w-30 is the liquid gold of engine protection. Another one is 0w-40 Mobil 1 Euro is what GM recommends for the Corvettes across the pond but in the US, GM recommends 5w-30. But, owners flock to the Euro blend because they swear it’s a much better oil. Like I said, this is a very deep rabbit hole that pops up on all the forums.

The Miata community lives by rotella T6 (technically advertised for diesels), myself included. You should consider testing that version sometime too. It has magical powers of lowering lifter tick

Just picked up a new Ford last week Saturday and will be running Rotella Gas Truck oil after my break in period. I know Rotella T is top of the line and I use it in my motorcycle. Glad to see they now offer something for gasoline engines.

Question...why do you use moble one as the comparison? Since Penzoil Platnium Plus was the secound place winner behind Amsoil in your head to head videos , ....I would think that would be the mark to compare to.

Pennzoil has always had a bad rep.,it was known to mess up the valve seats and rings due to the paraffins in the oil.(wax)

Pennzoil is also made by Shell, so it would kind of be testing the same brand. Not to mention Mobil 1 is usually the synthetic oil that most people recognize and use based on familiarity with the brand.
Penzoil is a hated brand around where I live. All the Toyota guys use Mobile, and all the diesel guys use Rotella. Now that Canadian Tire carries the full Shell line for both gasoline and Diesel engines, I’ll also use it in my Tacoma.
I watched this on the shelf for years and never considered it. I went straight for the Mobil1. This changes things a little. I may have to change it up and see how this goes.

It might be interesting to see what would happen if you did a 50/50 mix of the two oils. Would their chemical compositions compliment each other or would they perform worse than either of the oils?

Would you test Motorcraft 5w30 Synthetic Blend? I've been using that in my truck for years, and would like to know more about it.

Motorcraft doesnt make oil as it uses oil from a maker let's say mobil and just put their name on it and I dont think they make parts either as they get the parts from ford suppliers and put there name on it. I hauled auto parts for years and auto plants dont make most of their parts the supplier does, like for example if you buy a oem muffler it will cost you alot more from the dealer that sells oem and they get it from their supplier that would be tenneco or walker or like their brakes would say motorcraft but really it could be Kelsey Hayes , so you should look into who motorcraft gets there oil from and what additives are in it, but motorcraft doesnt really make much of anything and probly the same for AC Delco and Mopar.
I just requested the same thing. I switched from motorcraft to mobile 1 in my fusion and have had less blowby, increased power, and more mpgs

When I was at warren distribution the other day I noticed a Kirkland brand of oil. Might be a good oil to test against amazon oil

Yep. Add Walmart Supertec to the list as well. Amazon Basics 5w30 did hold up really well against Mobil1 when he tested it.
Funky Tape I switched my vehicles to amazon full synthetic. I also own a small engine repair shop and we use stens oil and so far it’s been good

Why are you comparing HD gas truck oil ( Shell) to regular automotive oil (Mobil 1) when Mobil makes a truck specific oil?
@@3stanTflip It's got to be different additive package for truck specific formulation. They could have the same spec and still be different. PF should compare apples to apples.

my boss was telling me when my oil pressure sensor blew out to use rotella T in my grand prix to keep it from leaking... dont think they understood what was going on lol

I started using Mobil 1 when I bought my truck new. I'm not married to that brand, but I'll probably keep using it just to stay consistent. The other thing about Mobil 1 is you can get it just about everywhere. That said, I would not mind trying the Shell oil.

Just used Shell Rotella 5w-30 in my 2016 F-150 for the second time. Appreciate the review. I use Mobil 1 in many of my vehicles too. Both good stuff.

I've been waiting for this one. I switched from mobile 1 to shell rotella gas oil because of price. Shell rotella gas oil is 1/4 the price of mobile 1. After the switch I noticed my severe oil leak on the jeep wasn't so severe.

Gas truck 0w20 is on clearance at Walmart for $5
I used this before my road trip. After 2k miles of straight driving and the other 3 for driving in CA, I will be changing my oil on my mom's driveway in a few mins. I have 7 5qt gas truck I bought down here on clearance. I will be taking it back home to my stock. This is as close to my dream of having a barrel at home. Good oil at a great price

I like Mobil 1. I've been using it in my 18 Elantra with a mobil 1 filter...stays cleaner looking than most at the 4,500-5k. (When I change my oil). I'd walk before I use anything by Castrol. I've never seen Castrol do well in any cold flow test. Ever.
My gramps drives Taxis🚕🚖🚖 under extreme Use! He uses Mobil 1 and all his cabs run smooth as Silk! Three have over 700.000, miles all Mobil 1. Always MOBIL 1=👊💪💪🐯🐯🐯🐯👑👑👑👑👑
It looks like Mobil 1 is great oil, while the Shell may be slightly greater!

M1 is not overrated at all, it's a great oil. When it's on sale at Costco for 27.99 for 6 quarts, it's an absolutely incredible value. If you're an idiot and buy single quarts for $9.99 each at Pepboys then you're an idiot for overpaying and might call it overrated.

I would like to see an episode comparing the brands you would normally get from Walmart for example valvoline, pennzoil, quaker state, castrol and super tech.
I just did a oil change with Mobil 1 extended performance 5w30. The day after I found Shell Rotella 5w30 on special at Walmart. I've been wanting to try it for a while in my Volvo S80, so I picked one up. I guess I will have to wait till next spring and my next oil change to see.

I am pleased to have watched this today. I find your happen to be my favorite tester on TH-cam. This is highly informative and made me think about actually using Shell. I use shell in my diesels, guess I might go with them too if Amsoil does as good if not better. Thank you!

How would this test be different if you had used these oils over a couple years with little use , I have a car that sits in the garage much of the time and gets used 10- 15 times per year how does this affect the oil , this is one of the best channels on TH-cam

Nuff said for me. Been looking for a suitable oil for my 14 5.0 F150. Used motorcraft factory recommended oil until now. 3k miles away from a service and I'm swapping to rotella. Same stuff I use in all my fleets diesel engines and they do great with it. Thanks project farm

Great review! I'd love to see a comparison of the major brands that diesel truck owners so dearly love...Shell, Chevron, Valvoline, Royal Purple, Red Line, Amsoil...you know, the major players. I personally use Rotella T6 in my Cummins and Blackstone results always return excellent. There is plenty of cheerleading going around for these oils, but I would love to see these oils compared. I liked your video a lot! The methodology was very sound and well explained. I would like to see you compare slightly more comparable oils from each brand though. I think you put Mobil 1 at a disadvantage by not using their extended performance or Truck and SUV branded oils. Mobil 1 is definitely more expensive from what I can find when you choose the EP or Truck and SUV, but I would definitely like to to see one of those compared to the Shell Rotella Gas Truck.
