  • Hello Operators.
Some time ago, Richard from sotabeams was kind enough to send over a WSPRLite for testing and review. After spending some time with the WSPRLite, I realized there would be much more potential if I had a second unit, and used the set for simultaneous antenna testing and comparisons in real-time.
This video covers how I'm using the WSPRLite for fair and accurate antenna testing, and comparisons in the field.
if you're interested in seeing the results of the test, you could follow this link and find them at the bottom of the page: oh8stn.org/blog/2017/06/23/wsp...

Thanks for the plug for my video. I think you've highlighted some key things in the way WSPRlite frees up your radios and can actually be left out in poor conditions running on batteries to gather results. We're all gradually learning the best methodologies to compare (and therefore measure) aerial performance and I have to say your approach with 2 x WSPRlites running in parallel is great and especially good for choosing an aerial configuration that can target a specific area rather than just looking for DX.
    Good stuff Julian

+Michael Sansom You are welcome Michael. I enjoyed your video so much I wanted to make sure to plug it, letting other people know what do you have accomplished. Yeah one area where the traditional ham radio operators and I often disagree, is on DX as the ultimate goal for radio communications. Sometimes my goal is simply to find other FSQ stations in Scandinavia. In that way the DX 10 plots were rather strange to me. The simultaneous spots page is beautiful though.
I think Richard did a great job on the hardware. Hopefully the Dxplorer.net website will grow into something a bit more mobile.
Thanks for commenting Michael it's very much appreciated.

Michael, I had watched your great video a couple of months ago and it motivated me to buy a WSPRlite. It is on the list to get done in the next one to two quarters. By the time I get it, you guys will have already figured out the best practices methodologies for those of us not quite on the bleeding edge! 73 de Robert K3RRR

Thank you. My wsprlite has only gone 2100 km on my 18' vertical. All the best to you and the Mrs. and those cute pups you have. Take care and be well my friend. 73 W1NGA

Julian, a genuinely great video. That really does look like fun! As I mention below in my note to Michael, his video a few months ago had already inspired me to buy a single WSPRLite....your video now has me buying two in the coming months! Carl had sent me both the Chameleon F Loop Plus and the new P Loop 2.0 and I would love to see how these two apparently similar antennas benchmark against each other. My intuition is that one will be surprisingly more effective than the other - although the same intuition is currently clueless as to which of the two would be the winner. When I run the tests, I will add a video over on my TH-cam channel. (However, since you also have both antennas, I fully encourage you to do the same comparison and beat me to the punch! Besides, your videos are better! I will eventually still run the same test and we can compare results.)
As I mentioned, by the time I get the WSPRLite(s), you guys will have already figured out the best practices methodologies for those of us not quite on the bleeding edge! 73 Julian de Robert K3RRR

+K3RRR actually this is an excellent idea Robert. I'm almost certain I can organize this test in the coming weeks after my trip up North. In fact I've already run this test just for fun and I know exactly which one will come out ahead, but I won't spoil your learning. Please stay in touch and let me know when you publish your video or any video with those antennas and I'll share them as well.
Afterwards we can compare the results of your tests and my own. If you need some tips on setting it up just let me know, I'm happy to help.

Fantastic, I have been hoping you may do something like this with WSPRLite. Great video as always and look forwards to the series.Geoff M6RYT

+geoffgr88 Right on Geoff. I am definitely sold on the WSPRLite. I've already got a couple of videos lined up for tests that people have been asking for, and this methodology certainly simplifies these tasks.

+A. W. Thanks for the kindness. Michael made a great video and deserved the shout - out. I'm hoping now that some of the other channels will also Step Up take this methodology into use.
      Happy solstice.

I have a Rasberry Pi running WSPrryPi. It would work great on a battery and portable. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for your very useful video... I'd like to ask you 2 questions.. 1) What kind of battery bank do you use..? i use this one (www.amazon.it/gp/product/B01G5DQ946/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) but it seems that the low power absorbed by the WSPRLite is not enough to keep the battery bank "awake".. so after a few minutes the power bank goes off and the WSPRLite too.. 2) Have you encountered any sort of problem testing simultaneously the two different nearby antennas due to their proximity..? Tks. IU1CYF
