    An update as to my current situation with this build. The physical build is completed, but I am now struggling with the Arduino and connecting to it. I need more time to figure out what is going on. In the meantime, here is where I am at.

    You're "not a creative person"? This looks extremely creative! The ARRL handbooks, especially the older one (1990's) left you hanging. Don't even get me started on the antenna books! Your explanations are clear and easy to follow. We now can go to those books (that I've had for 30 years) and actually combine it with this knowledge and create something truly awesome! Thanks for sharing your journey! 73's!

    Eric, I'd simply velcro the battery to the top of the controller box. That will allow for easy transport and you can use it for other things. Can't wait to see it in action.

    Great project. I have used the panel mount RJ45 connectors for various projects including dash mounted speaker mic and detachable mobile displays in my truck. There are several version avaialble such as keystone, female to male and female to female.

    Awesome job!!! I was wondering how it was coming along. I bought some of the parts and I have been patiently waiting to put it together. I was hoping you were going to do it step by step, but then I would have made the same mistakes with you. I am glad you made the mistakes on your own lol. However your overview really helped. Thanks!

    I'm working on the same thing, only I chose the esp-12e. It has integrated Wi-Fi, and a complete TCP IP stack. I also chose the 9DoF from adafruit. I can mount that directly on my printed circuit board containing the esp-12e.
    I also plan on integrating the (2) power mosfet h-bridges on the PCB..
    And a tiny 78SR-3v3 regulator. The 6v motors don't need regulation, just +/- direction.

    You should adapt elements of a Telescope German Equatorial Mount. These mounts use weights to balance out the drive system so the drive motors are not overloaded.

      That's what I was thinking as well. Shouldn't matter too much if the antenna on top is heavier if there is a counterweight to position the center of mass on the axis of rotation. With no counterweight I'm not sure if the servo can handle it, or how long it will last.

      We used a counterweight system when we cycled the payload bay doors of the space shuttle orbiters on the ground during processing. The drive motors couldn’t open them alone. Was a cool system that used weight baskets much like an elevator uses. Counterweights may work well here too.

    Fun to see your progress. If you have issues with your servo motors not being able to handle the weight of the antenna you could shorten the PVC pipe you have between the two tee's That would help the tilting servo motor out a bunch.

      1crazynordlander if I go any shorter on that, the antenna will clip the Tripod and aluminum channel, so I put it up lie that to avoid that but I understand your theory it’s just not feasable unless I mount tilt servo up top instead

    Eric, I let my ticket expire back in the 90s. I only worked 2 meters. I just picked up the 5100, 7300, and 9700...to say learning how to use this new SDR and digital stuff is an understatement. I started working the FM birds with an HR and got a real kick out of it. Now I want to build a portable satalite station for a xcountry trip my wife and I are going to take.
    Your project looks a bit like plans I picked up from Mark Spencer, the WRAPS rotator system published in the January, 2014 QST. The plans are available online if anyone just does a Google search.
    I belong to the Goddard Radio Club here in the DC area. Most of the other members work for NASA and one of the guys is involved with the Amatuer ISS project. They have a Leo Pack on a tower using an AZ EL system.
    I assume you can only use a lite antenna on your system. Does one really need a polarized pair of antennas? I should think you will be able to work most birds with your setup. At this point I don't know if I want no to get into a project like this. I would prefer a pretty much turn key system lol! 73 W1RNY. (My call has a significance. Can you figure it out? Clue.. remove the 1)

    For weeks I have been trying to rewrite the well-known programs from WB0OEW (Elwood Downey) for stepper motors.
    But I'm too stupid.
    Maybe I'll get smart.

    Hi, great project.
    The mega does have the capacity to power the IMU (accel) unit so it shouldn't need the external supply.
    What current capacity do the two DC-DC converters have?
    I would suggest you place some bypassing capacitors in your power circuit, this because you are using SMPS DC-DC units and the produce/radiate electrical noise, especially considering the sensitivity of the IMU unit.
    You have servo power cable running with your IMU unit cable, this my cause a problem.
    It looks like with the gearing you are using continuous rotation servos.
    The gearing will help, but realise when the servos get your rig to point in the correct direction, they will have a constant torque on them.
    Your pot feedback system will be keeping the motors in position, so you will have a load current flowing through the servo even when stationary.

    Eric, if I may make a couple of suggestions:
    The elevation servo may have the power to hold the antenna apparatus in place, however, as it increases the elevation, the servo will be drawing progressively more current to hold it there. I suggest you shorten the vertical PVC pipe attached to the servo as much as possible. Ideally, the antenna should be in the same rotational plane as the servo and balanced front to back.
    If the additional height is necessary to clear the tripod, you could install a counter balance on the elevation servo, or increase the height between the tripod and the azimuth servo.
    Those dc-dc converters are usually noisy. I recommend placing ferrite beads on the outputs, and for that matter on any long wire carrying signals. In similar projects of mine, I try to use linear regulators like a 7805 if the current requirements aren't too high.

      One other thing to note: The rotational torque on the elevation servo is the mass of the antenna times the distance from the center of rotation. So the shorter the distance the less rotational force the elevation servo has to deal with. That's why the original build had the servo up near the antenna. -KC3MBK

      @@dri50 Exactly. If I remember from my 1970's math, at 45 degrees elevation the torsional force would be 70.7% of the mass times the radius, and at 90 degrees, 100% of the mass times the radius.

      I'm going to add a fuse on the main battery feed to the powerpole splittter, but I forgot to add fuses between the other components.. Oops..

    I am just using a $9 ESP8266 chip that uses the same arduno code. It has on board wifi, AP so you wont need the Arduino, ethernet shield and the TP-Link saving you a bunch of money, real estate and power. I was trying to figure out how to do all this since I know it is quite doable, but I see some one has all ready done this conversion located in the link below

    I will also be interface it to Alexa and Google smart home applications. So it can send out an audio notice of what bird is about to be overhead and do other automatons to prep for it.

      Links in the first video. I gues I will post them here... There is a newer design that Elwood created using a ESP8266 processor, that is more up to date. But I didnt realize that and went this route.
