Do you think the Lotus Emira is a worthy successor to the Lotus Elise?

    • @zarbon700

Agreed with the others so far. It's an Evora replacement, not Elise. Lotus may need these larger, more luxurious cars to survive, but they should always have a small, light sports car in their lineup. The Elise epitomizes what Lotus stands for.

There is no choice in where phones are made, but I have chosen the phone designed by an American company and the whole shebang is owned and controlled by the American company. The profits go mainly to the western company, the intellectual property, the market share, the skilled employees are in the western company.
I will also gladly pay more for a phone made in the civilized world. Thankfully they have stated their intentions to bring production to the west again.
There is a wide range of choice in the automobile market. Plenty of western-made, non-genocidal, non-espionage, non-Taiwan-invading car companies.

Lotus are being artificially kept alive in order for China to use their brand to infiltrate the UK and western economy. It will eventually move everything to China once it has built a big enough following and its ownership is accepted. All production and eventually engineering and design will move to China. It will slowly suck out all of the knowledge at Lotus and feed this to Chinese engineers and designers. This is a common Chinese play book and you are all being played. This tactic is being engaged across every industrial sector and will eventually drain away all economic advantage from the west. You will all eventually loose your jobs, or have basic jobs with low wages that service Chinese companies in your country. If you do not believe this you are either A) Unable to understand the bigger picture B) So absorbed in your current lifestyle and /or so self centred that you ignore the truth C) Stupid.
China (Geely) are in the process of moving Volvo to China as they slowly attempt to hollow out western industry. They cannot get traction with their own brand so they use western brands against us. China are literally an enemy, that may sound like hyperbole but it manifestly isn't. They are a communist/totalitarian regime. Partnership is in no way part of their thinking process. It is the cover they use to slowly dismember western economies. They do not want partnership they want control and ownership. This is an will increasingly bleed in to political control and eventually erosion of western freedoms. China simply cannot allow freedom of thought or speech, it is not only antithetical but an existential threat to their regime. This goes for any all other nations they have influence over and will eventually be true for us. We are walking ourselves in to totalitarian control. If you think it seems too far fetched then you need to think deeper and harder. If you think this process will be benign, it will not.

As always, although it seems like a minor thing, Henry putting in there “if three pedals are *not an option* for you” is massively appreciated by myself and I’ve no doubt others. Some of us have to have automatics, not through choice, and it really matters when someone recognises this rather than insinuating that we are lesser petrolheads because of it. Amazing work as always Henry and Carfection!

I bet the 2.0 AMG engine with DCT will be the better car anyway. I've got nothing at all against manuals, but unless it's a weekend-only car, the manual is the wrong choice, IMO, at least if you live in a city. And this Toyota V6 isn't at all special, and if you want auto and V6 it's an old-fashioned auto that's totally incompatible with the very idea of a Lotus. Problem is they're still at the prototype stage, so who knows when customer deliveries start for the V6, and it'll be even longer for the AMG engine. Frankly, I'm sick of waiting so long between announcements and available cars. It's not just Lotus, and I hope it's just a consequence of Covid, rather than a new trend, but it's so annoying, and the momentum they lose can't be good for business.

Secondly, if you think that Lotus being owned by the Chinese is single handedly killing the car culture in the West, then you clearly have fewer brain cells than Lotus have models in their lineup. Thirdly, likening Lotus being Chinese owned to the atrocities being committed in the Ukraine is the most abhorrent and illegitimate argument I have ever heard and you need to have a long hard look at yourself before making such leaps in future. Bypass valve actuator for the supercharger is what you're seeing. It's just a butterfly valve which connects the inlet side to the outlet side of the supercharger to allow it spin without creating boost. It's actually quite old school to have a capsule style actuator, most OEMs have gone to an electronic actuator like a small drive by wire throttle to enable better control. I bet there are a few rougher prototypes kicking around that you weren't allowed to see!

I don't know why I thought this new Lotus was a done deal when they invited the press to the debut event 6 months ago...now Henry is driving an not quite production prototype with not quite production steering, suspension, tech and interior...probably just me?...but I'm looking forward to the Emira being a complete production reality and I am looking forward to Lotus having a well deserved revitalization...I hope it's not just a reskinned and updated to basic current production standards Evora. Lotus is a special brand with amazing cred...I am truly hopeful the reality of the Emira is everything we dream of for Lotus...great diplomatic video Henry.

Lovely stuff and looking forward to seeing Henry throw it in the general direction of the Highlands (hopefully). I'd like to see it with bugs on the numberplate and road muck up the arches 😁. Also, I think people are missing the point as to what the Emira is replacing - this is the last piston car that Lotus will manufacture so in effect its replacing, well, everything.

The Lotus, owned by Geely, therefore the Chinese Communist Party, and therefore in effect it's replacing western car companies and our freedom with Chinese hegemony and rule, no doubt continuing their genocide globally...

Thanks for the report, as usual some excellent photography and Henry's always good value. It seems that new supercars come out every day now, and it's hard to be impressed. In the era of Tesla sports performance, the specification wars seem to have been decided. But the best compliment you can give was that - It's a Lotus. It must handle brilliantly, it must be lightweight, it must let you know what's going on all the time, you should feel part of the car. The TFT screen or quality of the plastics is, I put to you, not relevant. But it's good to see Lotus aiming for the high spec fussy consumer - that's where the money is. Good luck to them 👍🇦🇺

What else do you expect from a Chinese company owned by the Chinese Communist Party, who will do anything to beat the west, destroy its auto industry and trick the westerners to even pay for the genocidal army which will in the end control them. Clearly they will win, as they can get away with such simple schemes.
